- In this video I described start of my ROV career, shared my experience and gave my thoughts what's needed to proceed in the ROV industry as a beginner. There were multiple requests coming to me, asking what people should do to start their career, and hopefully I managed to answer majority of questions by this video. Don't hesitate to comment it in case not everything you wanted was explained or something is not yet clear.
Hello guys! The industry is big now indeed. Many companies are searching mostly experience people but also trainees. My advice is try to show motivation and discipline. Even with no experience try to undestand how an ROV works by google searching or GPT. Companies try to invest in their people but you need to show motivation to learn fast to employ you. Some other great companies that didn't mentioned are Helix,Rovop and Enshore. I was very lucky and employed by company with no experience at all so anything is possible... In addition with ROV there are trenchers and jetters which are very similar in technical terms and if you know how to pilot them is a big plus.

I'm currently working offshore but sending my CV everywhere i can to get a trainee position. No luck yet and most have filled the trainee quota this year. I'll keep trying, thanks for the video!

Hi, Kos Rom. Thanks for your informative video. I have a few questions.
1. What's difference between "Subsea engineer" and "ROV Pilot"?
- Mechanical engineer, Electric engineer, Subsea engineer belong O&M Company / ROV pilot belongs ROV company?
- Does O&M Company which owns platform for gas production ows their own rov pilot? or hire from ROV Company?
- Does subsea engineer also deals ROV or AUV?
2. What's the reason using "ROV" for subsea working instead of "AUV"?
- because of much electric consumption?
- because of Size or manipulator?
3. Please advise my offshore carrerpath.
- Subsea engineer vs Mechanical or Electric engineer vs ROV Pilot
- My background as follows.
- 29 years old
- 6 years as marine engineer(merchant ship : PCTC, HEAVY LIFT, BULK, LNG) that contains ETO work (because there's no ETO in my nation's ships.)
- 0.5years and now on as oceanography engineer(deals with ASV not ROV. deals some underwater system like multibeam, LBL, USBL for reaserch and development purpose)
Hello! Thanks for definite questions, looks like you know what you want. The Subsea Engineer is the same ROV Pilot, but he/she is the Senior one in the team. Usually there is 3 people per 1 work class ROV: ROV PT, Subsea Eng (or Senior ROV PT- it's just a different name), and a Supervisor.
ROV system can belong to the shipping company (i.e. Subsea 7), or can belong to a ROV company (i.e. ROVOP), which is installed on board the ship or a rig. In first case the ROV PT will be employed by a shipping company, in the 2nd - by ROV company. I don't see much difference.
AUV can't operate for long period of time due to battery limitation. The ROV can stay subsea for long time, is more powerfull, and has manipulators for heavy duty work.
ROV pilot technician - requires a combination of skills, and mechanical, and electrical, and electronics.
Your background is perfect to start your career as ROV Pilot Technician trainee. After approx 1 year (can be less or more depending on different circumstances) you would become ROV pilot technician, after some time proceed as Senior ROV PT (or Subsea Engineer), the ROV Supervisor, and maybe as ROV superintendent (not everywhere this role exists).

Regarding salary is it similar to what an average ETO make or much higher ? For a trainee or pilot technician?

Thanks. The PT gets a bit more than ETO, but after a few years you are Senior PT (or Subsea Eng), after few more years you are supervisor, and so on… Even a trainee in a good company gets more or equally as ETO in an average place. Good luck!

Hello! The market is still active and there are multiple open positions for ROV PTs, however I don't see any trainee positions anymore. I was in the same doubts as you before I applied for the training. The thing is, that it's not a guarantee that after the training with Fugro you will be employed. These are commercial courses for 1 month only. As an example, I've been having my traineeship for 1 year before I was promoted to a PT. However, there is a chance, that you might be employed by Fugro straight a way after the course (they also need people) if you show you are motivated. If not, it will be definitely a plus, when you apply for the position with other companies.

Hi! Well done! There will be issued a tablet with all the materials you need (mine was broken years ago), and you will have more than sufficient time to study (whole month). Fugro use their ROVs, which are called FCV (also Sealions), so you can read about them in internet.

@@williamwesttamunotonye904 yes, the tablet was given to us forever (actually we bought it if you consider the price of the course). It was intense, but there was enough time for everything. We also managed to visit many places to have fun (lived in a nice hotel in Yas island, went to Ferrari park, went to Dubai), and there was time for study. I hope the course has a similar activities and schedule.

Hello! The course was provided in the training lessons. I don’t think the companies will provide their materials easily, this is how money is made by them. I believe you can find some general information at ROV maker webpages, but not in details. Check companies Schilling Robotics, Perry systems, Saab (Seaeye)

Not sure… as an example, I started when I was 36. Potentially as far as you have valid medical certificate- you can work offshore, but you should realise that if the candidate is 65- the company may not want to invest
Can you recommend any training courses / companies for UK / EU / UAE.
The one I did was in Fugro Academy training centre, which was in UAE (Abu Dhabi). It was in 2015, so the things might changed, but back in that days it was great one. The companies I recommended were at the very end of the video. Can add ROVOP company as well.

How long this certificate is valid?
@@oleksandrkuzin5464 There is no expiry, and the certificate is not essential, it's just a bonus when you apply for the open positions. If you do the training in Fugro academy, most likely you will be employed by them afterwards while the market is so active. I would recommend first to apply for any open positions for the ROV PT you can find without the training.
