    When I need to configure my mouth and throat for "projection" or "speaking into the mask" (singer's term), I use "Oh really, how utterly fascinating" in a tone of whithering contempt. For some reason, that lowers the epiglotis and the adam's apple.

    I grew up in the US since 2 yrs old. I don't feel I should have an accent and in my head I don't hear the accent but if I hear my self in a recording I sound like I have a big old accent and I don't like it. Also I think what adds to it is I have a high pitch voice. So now I've noticed it's the way I pronounce certain words. Also probably because some of my older siblings have an accent so probably rubbed off on me without me even knowing

    I work in customer service taking calls 8 hours a day. It's very upsetting when a customer as soon as I greet them say: Transfer me to an agent in the United States. Or, as soon as I greet them, they ask: Where are you from? Ufff....I have to deal with this all day longggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's sooooo annoying. Seriously. People are just nasty and prejudiced. They completely dislike you and feel you will not be able to assist them as an American would. It makes my job sooo difficult. I NEED desperately to get rid of my accent. I came to the United States when I was 20 years old from South America. I speak Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, English and I am studying German. It's funny you mention German on this video. There are many new sounds I am learning, but I must say it's the hardest language I ever studied so far. The first time I encounter an r, I almost died! Try saying bruder (brother in German, or bread) I'm having a blast though. I love languages. I want to learn Latin and Mandarin as well. I wonder if the German people would also look down on me if I don't speak German with perfect pronunciation, as a native.

    • @itshel2677
      @itshel2677 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sorry to hear that. There was an exchange between a student and a teacher I heard about which was great. The student apologised for his bad german I think it was. The teacher replied with "You speak my language but I don't speak yours so you are already ahead of me." wish more people had that mindset.
      Also yeah the german "R" sound is a bit weird. It's not this very strong rolling sound (anymore) like in Russian but also not this smoorh(?) english "R". It's pretty scratchy I think.
      Best of luck. Customer service is a rough job.

    • @cnmusic23

      I feel for you. I work call center customer service for 4 years and recently I got to sit and listen in to one of my colleagues who has an accent. I could not believe how much nastier people were to her and it was clearly bc of her accent. One person even stated she had to talk slower bc she “had an accent”. I felt so horrible for her. I didn’t realize until I put myself into the shoes of someone w an accent basically in America how much badly people are treated for having one. I applaud you for even being able to speak multiple languages. It is so tough to learn I been trying to get Spanish down as a second language nearly my whole life and I feel stupid bc I can’t.

    i have heard many people trying to speak like an American native speaker, still, there is always a hint of an accent which can tell me where that person comes from. Accent shouldn't be stigmatized, it is a badge of honor to have an accent. Of course, if you teach any language or subject, ensure your accent is not too thick and your learner can understand you. Even if we all try to speak like a pro in another language, we always carry that accent where we come from. Nothing wrong with that.

    • @liviareginalarosamariano6069
      @liviareginalarosamariano6069 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, that would be great. But in reality, I guess all of us are just trying our best to make sure others can understand us like we want them to. Sometimes it takes me a bit longer than I wanted to finish a sentence, and not because I can't say the words, but because the rhythm is just... not it. So, moving forward, I want to have at least a better flow I guess, more natural, not native, because that would never be the case, but at least natural to the ear.

    Your American accent example at 5:54 "Sure" makes the common mistake many Non-American accent speakers make - and that is over stressing and dragging the "R". A neutral American accent (Not a Southern or New York one) has a quick and soft "R".
    So, its not "Surrre".

    All of his co-workers were gone. What could it mean? Stanley decided to go to the meeting room; perhaps he had simply missed a memo.

      You should never be ashamed or tired of the accent you have from your upbringing, unless it really was traumatic and you'd rather forget it. No matter how skilled actors are, nobody can replace a native speaking person for a part that needs it. Right now there could well be many people looking for a native Mexican accent, not someone "acting" it. The key is finding those people.

      Dont worry about it I bet a lot of people are insecure of their birth land. Just remember that motherland is just an idea born on a fragile system the only thing that matters is what you find joy in and the people and things you love, nevermind what people might think about your physical appearance just try to be a really likeable person, or not up to you. My point being cheese is way too overpriced.
