Hi Saeed! Gordon Lightfoot is one of our national treasures in Canada. There's a seemingly endless list of brilliant songs. I'm happy that you've been exploring his music.
Gordon’s “Early Morning Rain” is one of the most recorded songs of the rock era and helped put him on the map as an elite songwriter. His version could be paired with the hit version by Peter, Paul, and Mary (Peter Yarrow died yesterday) or Elvis from his Hawaii special. “Sundown” was his biggest hit and deservedly so.
Bob Dylan said of Gordon Lightfoot: “Every time I hear a song of his, it's like I wish it would last forever.” Ditto, Bob. Ditto. But, lovely sensitive reaction Saeed. I just lost my husband last Spring and this song is certainly emotional for me. One of Gordon’s very early tunes, I believe. I’ve always found it to be beautiful, but so melancholy. He was just an extraordinary artist. (BTW, it was “Canadian Railroad Trilogy” that you were trying to think of).
It made me think of the last time I saw the man I loved in New York. It also made me cry thinking about my daughter who walked away from me with her daughter eleven years ago never to return.
@ hugs to you Nancy. I know those “last times” are so bittersweet. Music can be our best friends or worse enemies depending on the memories it conjures up. I hope another song makes you smile❤️
It's pretty hard to pause when greatness is before you! This has been my favourite song of my all time favourite singer/song writer for well over fifty years. Feast yourself on Gordon's United Artists albums and then have some early Reprise albums for desert. A Minor Ballad is another beautiful one.
Oh you keep picking great stuff...not only great writers and performers, but not the same songs of theirs everybody checks out. This gem is, I have found, not even available for karaoke...unlike the dozen or so other Lightfoot songs I have the pleasure of singing in that setting. Check out, also, Pussywillows, Cattails, and Bitter Green. Lightfoot was a national treasure here in Canada...
Do his song called The Pony Man. It will make you long with nostalgia for a childhood that you never lived, yourself. His magic touch on lyrics and accompanying music combined with his beautiful voice just pulls you, easy and natural-like, into the character of a small child on a bedtime waking-dream adventure for an enchanting couple of minutes.
Now go do something that makes you smile! This song looks like it made you reflect a little too much on what life could be one day. Gordon Lightfoot. A word smith for sure.
Great song but very sad 😢. Now you should do Sundown. It's about a girl named Cathy Smith who used to hang out with Levon Helm and The Band. Yes "hang out with" (They never knew who the father was of the baby). The song, The Weight referenced her. Then she got into an affair with Gordon Lightfoot. So Gordon wrote Sundown about her after leaving. She then moved onto John Belushi. She was the one that injected him that night. Apparently Robin Williams was there that night, but left early because Kathy creeped him out. If that doesn't wet your appetite, nothing will 😂😂😂
Another song that will bring a tear to one's eye is Beautiful. But Gordon doesn't express sadness, just the tenderness of a beautiful friend.

Today's music doesn't have such poetic emotion and beautiful melodies
If You Could Read My Mind, Carefree Highway, Sundown, Rainy Day People. My husband loves Gordon.
Gosh, that might be the saddest song I’ve ever heard…but so beautiful. Thank you, Saeed.
I agree. It tears me up.
Definitely need to hit “If you could read my mind”. Brilliant lyrics ❤
Thanks for the recommendation! Definitely want to explore more. Incredible artist.
All the feels with this one. Beautiful and bittersweet. ❤
Indeed. This one got to me.
Thanks for watching!

Gordon’s voice was so powerful in this song. More vibrato, So beautiful
Keep listening to Lightfoot--he always delivers.
I wonder how many of us listened to this song and ended up remembering their “last time”

I had forgotten about this song. Thanks for playing it. I loved listening to it through you.
Gordon Lightfoot expresses feelings and thoughts so beautifully in his lyrics. Cherish the beauty in life every day for goodbye is so very hard.
Love him so so much. Where is "If You Could Read My Mind"? Oh my goodness!!

All of his songs are beautiful! His concert was my first date with my husband back in 1974 in Cincinnati Ohio.
Gordon Lightfoot is a supreme storyteller and melody creator. Same as with Genesis. Don't sleep on THAT band!
First time hearing this song. I liked it. A couple of other good songs to check out are If You Could Read My Mind and Sundown. Enjoyed your reaction.
I have never heard this song before. I never bought this album when I was a kid. :) Thanks.
Powerful song and amazing writing. Thanks for watching.

Wow.
Exactly.

Very sad indeed.
That song will definitely go on the list. I might have read about that fateful night long ago.
