Dan wrote this song about an actual experience he had one Christmas Eve in his hometown. After Dan passed away, that former girlfriend went public to share her memory of that night. She only had nice things to say about Dan, as I recall.
It seems all his songs have a big dose of truth to them. I believe the only real compromise to artistic license here was that her eyes weren't really blue -- but he had to find a rhyme!
@@KelliDBH Yes, I came into the comments to recommend that he listen to the actual song since he liked the poetry of Robert Burns. It’s been covered by half 1 million people, lol, but my favorite from my childhood and what I remember staying up for is, Guy Lombardo and his Canadians. He used to play the Rainbow Room in New York City on New Year’s Eve in the Big Band/Swing days. I highly recommend it.❤
The song ended with a Saxophone solo of the song "Auld Lang Syne" which is a musical version of that Scottish poem that we sing at midnight on New Year's Eve in the US.
Hi Saeed. May I suggest Run For The Roses by Dan Folgelberg. It is about the Kentucky Derby. I think you will really enjoy it. One of my favourite songs by Dan. Have a great day. Love from Canada
His lyrics paint the perfect picture of that actual chance encounter that we all could imagine or perhaps have experienced. Such poignant writing and the music adds extra that emotional element that together is sublime. I think that when he says “Another Auld Lang Syne” he might be referring to the passage of another year. This was Christmas eve and Auld Lang Syne is the song that Scottish and other English speakers sing on New Year’s Eve which was the tune the saxophone player played at the end. The genius of his lyrics are how they reflect the poem’s words, “Should old acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind?” and “We'll drink a cup of kindness yet, For the sake of auld lang syne” [sic: for old times’ sake]. Dan was a fantastic wordsmith, and I miss artists who write and compose music like this. Thanks for your as always great reaction.

Old Lang Syne is in many Christmas movies (It's a Wonderful Life's ending scene) and is thus seen as a Christmas song by many, so since this was a real event that happened on Christmas Eve between him and his his school sweetheart, he named it Same Old Lang Syne.
Thanks for the wonderful reaction. Dan Fogelberg was the first concert that my partner and I went to together and, 37 years later, he still holds a special place in our hearts. Love your insights - keep the videos coming!
I hope you keep reacting to Dan. HIs lyrics in his ballads/love songs are wonderful. He's written poignant lyrics about young love, struggling love, and love that has ended. Since you like lyrics I really think you'll like his catalog.
In his song "Hard to Say," Dan wrote "There's still a lot of things you'll never know, like why each time the sky begins to snow, you cry." I always wondered if that was a reference to the snowy incident in "Same Old Lang Syne."
Auld Lang Syne was set to music over 200 years ago and is traditionally sung at the stroke of midnight on New Years Eve all over the world. I'm surprised that you have never heard it. I love Gordon Lightfoot's lyrics, and composition on "If You Could Read My Mind", I think you might enjoy it too Saeed (I envy you, your marriage).
I learned Auld Lang Syne in grade school. It is played on New Years Eve. Back in the 50s and 60s, you would see groups all singing with their arms around each other, holding their wine glasses above their heads on television. I went to one club, one time, on New Year's Eve. It was insane. Best stay home and bang pots and pans in your front yard at midnight. Lol
Dan was such an incredible soul. So beautiful! Some gorgeous songs of his are "Run for the Roses" about horses being raised to run the Kentucky Derby. I cry every time I hear it, Netherlands and Ghosts are another two, Very deep and spiritual.
Dan Fogelberg is one of my favorite musicians. The story he tells and beautiful lyrics as you said are impecable. His double album called The Innocent Age from 1981 is my favorite album of all time. My own favourite by DF though is The Sand And The Foam, from 1981's The Innocent Age. Love that song so much I want it played at my funeral...
I think that was a soprano saxophone at the end. Saxophones come in soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones. The most common one you see is the alto sax, followed by the tenor sax, which is a little bigger.
I have not heard this song in years/decades. I still got the same sadness of the words and how I could relate if I met a particular old flame and what to say. I have been with my departed husband since 1986. Before that, I had a boyfriend for almost 5 years, and we still stay in contact with Christmas cards, birthday calls, and the calls of updates of people we have known, and the occasional meeting at functions. After 5 years, I was ready to leave, and I cannot see myself getting reminiscence about him. But the boyfriend I had between him and my husband, this song brings a sadness and joy if by chance bumping into him and chit-chatting. We do the Christmas and birthday cards through the year with updates. I think because I was not ready to say goodbye (his job relocated him back home, I in CA and him to KS), and I was too scared to follow him and leaving my mom who had a stroke during this time. We are states apart and chances for us to bump into each other is slim, it has not happened in 40 years. We both married and no children for either of us. Thinking about him and the other boyfriend does bring a sense of my youth back. I do not know if it is the boy or was life was so easier, no responsibilities, date and have fun. Also, I have my sense of youth (I was still young when we met), with my late husband all through our life together. I think because we did not have children, we did not watch our children getting older, so the effect of time passing was not there unless we looked into a mirror (wrinkles and gray hair). I know in this life I would not see him, since covid rob me of his last 6 weeks being with him, feeling and talking to him before he passed away 4 1/2 years ago. As for the old flame, we do not exchange photos, and it has been 40 years, maybe it is best to keep the memories alive of those days.

Dan is my favorite Troubadour!!! this song is one of my all-time favorites from him. And my absolute all-time favorite song if you so choose to react to it is: "Make Love Stay" the studio version from his album, "Greatest Hits" released in 1983. Good reaction. btw That instrument at the end of the song is a Clarinet.
I never really noticed the fact that he was trying to drag out the song like trying to drag out the time that you’re spending with this person What a great observation
Another great reaction to another great song. Thank you. As good as this performance is, I prefer the studio version a bit more. By the way - that last bit on the clarinet is the tune to the song "Auld Lang Syne" - typically played on New Year's Eve.
Listen to Fogelberg’s “Ghosts!” It will give you CHILLS! OR Old Tennessee… “End of October, the sleepy brown woods seem to nod down their heads to the winter. Yellows & grays paint the sad skies today and I wonder when you’re coming home!” WOW
Based on a true event. He changed a few details to protect her identity (i.e., she wasn't married to an architect) but she has been identified and talked about the song.
Nice. Another from the superb Greetings From The West live set. Interestingly, the main melodic line in the verses of this song is taken from Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture!
Your analysis of songs: the music, lyrics, and subtext, are so thoughtful. I appreciate you taking the time to really think about the lyrics. It's the most essential part of a song, but not something a lot of reactors take the time for. Another lovely reaction, thank you.
Sometimes two people who love each other Especially when they’re young Don’t have complete control over their own lives I think it’s great that you were still married to your high school, sweetheart A lot of people who don’t appreciate someone that young could know what they really bug me Just because most people don’t know what they want doesn’t mean we’re all like that Bravo, sir
Wow. Haven't heard this in years. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 You keep talking about your high school sweetheart. You really have to do Tim Minchin's If I Didn't Have You. 🤣🤣🤣
Joni Mitchell's "The Last Time I Saw Richard" is a vignette in a similar vein but it's a bit darker. It's an incredible song that's well worth your time.

His poetry was terrific.
Another story teller/writer is Chris LeDoux who had a lot of fans before Garth Brooks mentioned him in a song. "Photo Finish" is a less serious one 😊 He died far too young but has dozens of stories in song you might enjoy whether reacting to them or not. Music can touch moments in time many relates to
It’s tradition to sing Auld Lang Syne at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve going into the new year.
I never really noticed the fact that he was trying to drag out the song like trying to drag out the time that you’re spending with this person
What a great observation
Another great reaction to another great song. Thank you. As good as this performance is, I prefer the studio version a bit more. By the way - that last bit on the clarinet is the tune to the song "Auld Lang Syne" - typically played on New Year's Eve.
Definitely will listen to the studio version as well. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing these recommendations! Definitely want to hear more.
What a treat here love you
Incredible song. Thanks for watching. Much love.
Based on a true event. He changed a few details to protect her identity (i.e., she wasn't married to an architect) but she has been identified and talked about the song.
When I caught your first Fogelberg reaction; I was hoping you would do this one and 'voila!' Very cool Saeed. Til the next reaction. 👊
Such a great song! Thanks for watching, Pete!
This is all a true story. Her eyes weren't blue and her husband wasn't an architect. Everything else is just what really happened.
You've discovered one of the most prolific artists that we were fortunate enough to have, although for too brief a time 😢
Great reaction! Fogelberg is one of my favorites! It cuts!
Amazing song! Definitely want to explore more of his music. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful song; bittersweet story. Thanks for the reaction.
Truly beautiful song. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for the kind words. Have a wonderful day!
@SaeedReacts. ❤️
Sometimes two people who love each other
Especially when they’re young
Don’t have complete control over their own lives
I think it’s great that you were still married to your high school, sweetheart
A lot of people who don’t appreciate someone that young could know what they really bug me
Just because most people don’t know what they want doesn’t mean we’re all like that
Bravo, sir
I have Fobelberg's album. Every cut is fantastic.
You should put "Souvenirs" on your playlist. Another great story-song.
Wow. Haven't heard this in years. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
You keep talking about your high school sweetheart. You really have to do Tim Minchin's If I Didn't Have You. 🤣🤣🤣
Better with the studio version,but...thanks for checking it out. T
Looking forward to your journey with Dan,bro-- many great ones!
WOOOW!❤❤❤❤❤Love, from Hungary❤️👍
Great song! Thanks for watching. Greetings from Belgium.
Joni Mitchell's "The Last Time I Saw Richard" is a vignette in a similar vein but it's a bit darker. It's an incredible song that's well worth your time.
"As the raven Flies" from his country-rock album Souveners. Great album combining Dan's style with country -rock sound of the early to mid 70s
"Leader of the Band". Fogelberg
This is my favorite of his.
In America (at least, perhaps in the UK, too) the Burns poem “Auld Lang Syne” set to music is traditionally sung on New Year's Eve, as the clock strikes midnight and a new year begins.
In Canada too.
@@444dkm Yes, in fact, wasn't Guy Lombardo (famous for his orchestra's rendition of “Auld Lang Syne”) a Canadian?
@@tomenrico6199 indeed so!
How about reacting to "Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain" (in concert) - love Dan's singing
If you want to experience one of his finest pieces of storytelling, albeit a very sad one, I highly recommend "Tucson, Arizona."
Oh yes. An aural movie...Every time I see a 1960 Chevy (saw two at a car show just today!), that song starts playing in my head...
the tune the saxophonist was playing in the end was the music for the song Auld Lange Syne.
