I was there in 1976 - we took a very small boat across. I thought we’d arrived in paradise. The water was turquoise, fresh and clear. We hired bicycles and cycled from one end to the other. The garden was then The Horlick’s Garden and we were alone. I like the look of the new campsite. Gigha is referred to as God’s Island. What a fantastic place.
I was there in 2023. An instant connection with the place. White sands, turquoise waters, friendly locals. It was a dream. If you go, please leave it as you found it ❤
I went there in 2015 as a part of my field trip at Lancaster University and absolutely loved my time. Beautiful place to be. Glad to see Gigha developing now.
Love Gigha, I’m lucky to have family living on the island ❤ we got married on one of the wee beaches off from the north twin beach. The home bakery made our wedding cake and we always get some goodies when we visit. My mother in-law has a wee honesty box for her crochet crafts on the way up from the ferry 🖤 back on Gigha in 2 weeks 🖤
It’s such a special place. If you ever find yourself going back have a look for my father in laws books Discover the Isle of Gigha and A portrait of Gigha by Keith Wilson. Ano I’m slightly biased but his books are great there’s also another Keith Wilson on the island who I believe has an older book with maps of Gigha through time. I’m almost caught up on your videos now, can’t wait to see where you take us all next 🖤 Happy Travels
Just picked a jar of blackberries and a jar of nettle seeds two days ago (giving thanks to the plants themselves whilst doing it) they were both quite wonderful and are very healthy. Nettles are so underrated and misrepresented in our society look up what they do for us Ruth it's pretty amazing really. 🌿💚
I love that! I’m so interested in growing my own veg and herbs and foraging. I really wanted to do more of if this year but the van travel and creating videos has ended up being what I’ve spent a lot of time on. Definitely in the future 🙏
@@ruthaisling Nettles and Blackberries are some of the easiest to forage as they're so abundant and recognisable Sis' this is only my second year gathering Nettle seeds and it's so easy I actually fill a jar of them quicker than I do the Blackberries and OMG! It's like they put a spring in my step...that's what it feels like. They taste nice too I hope you're as amazed by them as I am when you do try them. I spent nearly all of my life outside Scotland too Ruth so I love seeing different parts I don't know about yet. Your posts inspire me to see some for myself too sometime.
Fabulous Ruth, you are doing a great job of publicising your homeland to us, I am already planning how I can enjoy similar road trips. I hope that Tourism Scotland appreciate the work you are doing on their behalf? Great Job!!
Thank you, I was in Scotland in 2019, on my own driving on the opposite side of the road, what an adventure & gift from my children. I covered a lot in two weeks and wondered about the islands. Seeing these islands through your eyes has been lovely. If I have another chance to visit Scotland, this will be a definite destination! So far, I've lived half my life in Hawaii and half in Washington State.
My mum used to make delicious tablet and shortbread every Christmas mmm. Think I would’ve bought one of each and disappeared down memory lane😊 Very beautiful island. Thanks for sharing

I was going down to Waterfoot on Sunday, the Mull of Kintyre and Jura were clearly visible - made me think of your last video. I love the thought of an island owned by the residents 😄
Hi Ruth Fantastic video. The last time we visited Gigha was when we went Campbeltown and surrounding area. The ferry across in the 90's was less than half of the new one from what I can recall. Tablet is a very sugary food from my Scottish days and as you say too much and it is a bit sickly. I think the big house was open was food.Looked as if you had lovely weather. Regards Crawford
I have always loved islands. Looking back on many holidays over the years, a fair proportion have been on islands including our favourite - Madeira. I see them as mini countries. What an inspiring story surrounds the community takeover of Gigha and thanks for such a lovely video.
I enjoy all your videos! I watched this days ago but on my TV. The images of your videos are so beautiful that I want to see them on the big screen. Your video has brought back some great memories of visiting Gigha in about November 2006, staying at Achamore House (the big hoose!) which at the time did B&B. A lot of changed and is new thanks to the community efforts which is great to see. You’ve tempted me to consider a return visit.
Another bonnie adventure on this beautiful Island of Gigha! The scenery & views are stunning, along with the lovely beach & the fascinating Fisherman's Cave, with all the names carved in the rocks from way back, many years ago. Also, the choice of seafood in that wee hut there was amazing & that halibut bagel you had for lunch looked delicious! Along with the cute wee Ice Cream Parlor, with the home made Ice Cream & in such unique Flavors. As well as, the wee honesty box filled with baked goods. What a treat that would be! Only in Scotland! Aye lass! I was also really happy to see you eating your porridge there! No doubt trying to keep up with auld John Taylor from Lead Hills Village! Well good for you! Perhaps you'll make it to 137 years yourself now lass. LOL. I'm also glad to see that there were no spiders in your porridge hiding in the blackberries though.Very tickly going down I would imagine! Let's hope old John didn't have any spiders in his either! Although, maybe that was his real secret of living such a long life! LOL .I also really loved the South part of the Island, especially the lovely Achamore Gardens. They are just so lush & beautiful, with such pretty flowers, exotic plants, foliage, trees, the cool bamboo maze and... lots of bumble bees. All this, along with such an interesting history as well. It looks very peaceful there & it would be such a joy to just walk around the gardens & take in the beauty all around you. Then to top it all off, there is that amazing view! Stunning! Finally, there's the Boathouse & that delicious looking Seafood Curry dinner that you had. My mouth was watering just watching you eat it. Yum! Wow! There's no doubt about it, this is a beautiful Island! The people who live & own land or homes on this lovely Island of Gigha are truly blessed! Thank you for sharing this delightful experience!

Excellent video Ruth, I'm glad you had good weather for your trip, I've been to Gigha over a dozen times and the weather has always been good, it can be dry when the nearby mainland is wet from the rain! Your trip reminds me that I need to visit for leisure and not just for work. A tip for travellers to Gigha, on weekdays the first ferry over can be very busy with contractors, so it's best avoided. Your holiday isn't as vital to the island as someone waiting for a tradesman to call! 👍
Wow, what a fantastic island, as for tablet, I was practically brought up on it. There were so many wee Italian cafe's in Glasgow that made their own tablet.
Interesting and well presented video which I really enjoyed in my lunch break, definitely putting that campsite on my ever increasing, thanks to your videos, todo list
Hi Ruth, You mentioned purchasing land at the beginning, but are foreigners also able to purchase under the same conditions? Recently, the number of overseas buyers has been increasing in Japan, but the value of land is likely to be divided. The atmosphere of the island seems to be similar to that of Japan. It is a moderately sized island for tourists to enjoy local specialties, and it is not completely touristy, so it seems that you can enjoy a moderate local feeling. How do backpackers without cars spend their time? There are all sorts of places to see, so you can easily enjoy the magnificent nature.
Yes, foreigners can also buy land in Scotland. A man from Denmark is Scotland's biggest landowner - www.scotsman.com/arts-and-culture/this-danish-businessman-is-now-the-largest-landowner-in-scotland-564902 There is public transport in Scotland like trains and buses but they might be infrequent and not as reliable / punctual like in Japan!
There is Scottish government and crowdfunding support for local communities to buy land from absentee landlords and there are increasing areas of land being purchased by the local people. Eigg is an amazing place, and I have been there often. You can take a car onto the island on a ferry, or take a bicycle. Or just walk, but it would take several days to see all the island has to offer on foot. And the weather can deliver four seasons in a day, for most of the year. And the people are great. I’m sure you can find transport answers if you Google the Eigg trust. Taxis will be possible, even a bus . Or hitch; it’s not the American Midwest! Just don’t be in a hurry; there is no translation for emergencies like mañana in Gaelic
Your videos really show the best of Scotland and are very well put together and interesting. Definitely inspiring and teaching me things I didn’t know. I think you visited at a particularly good weather window though - I am sure it rains sideways up there for a lot of the year 😂.
at around 11:50 that looked like goat fudge. It was always so good. Too cold of a country for my. 20c or less is too cold for me in south florida. Another great informative interesting video. But less red. 😞 🙂 thanks.
Another fantastic video about yet another beautiful corner of a beautiful country that I can't wait to visit. My only "complaint" is that I'll never have enough time to do it justice! ☺
Love the videos. Such beautiful scenery every time. Thank you for letting us be a part of your trip. I don't know if you intend going to Lismore off the coast at Oban.
Great video as I have overnighted on the visitors moorings a few times but never explored the island, hopefully some time. Incidently it is pronounced Geea, not Geha, the gh is silent.
You made me chuckle when you said you don't like marmalade. I used to get teased mercilessly as a child if there was anything with marmalade or dried fruit, because I'd always say "but I dinnae like the peels!" 😠😂 There's a reason you remove it from fruit, and it's not too eat it! That bramble and peat sounds lovely though. Oh, and tablet... 😋😋😋

That was my experience, just very different, we we were working the croft at Ardailly for the late Hughie Wotherspoon, at that time he was the postie
I think in 1976 there were 12 dairy farms, with about twenty cows each, and a creamery.
What an inspiring place and amazing people to dedicate themselves to saving and protecting their home and heritage! Truly wonderful! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

That’s a great piece of advice, thanks for sharing!
Another great vlog Ruth. Thank you.
Dear Ruth Love your trip to Isle of Gigha, regards Mike from Yeovil somerset
Thanks for watching Mike, appreciate it!
Wow, what a fantastic island, as for tablet, I was practically brought up on it. There were so many wee Italian cafe's in Glasgow that made their own tablet.
Oh wow sounds great, how are your teeth?!
@@ruthaisling the five teeth I've got left are great 😁😁😁

Thanks Steve!
Beautiful scenery
Hello Ruth mick from Hull really enjoyed this episode hope you are doing OK and I will look forward to your next episode xx 😊😊
Thanks for watching from Hull!
We have wild Blackberries all around us here in Humboldt county by the Sea. Love this video 💜 Happy travels!
Lovely! Thanks for watching!
If you squash blackberry's with a fork then sprinkle some sugar over them they are really great - give it a try next time you have blackberry's.
You can also pour cream over them that makes them yummy
Sounds great, I’ll try it later in the year when they are back out. Thanks John
A man from Denmark is Scotland's biggest landowner - www.scotsman.com/arts-and-culture/this-danish-businessman-is-now-the-largest-landowner-in-scotland-564902
There is public transport in Scotland like trains and buses but they might be infrequent and not as reliable / punctual like in Japan!
Nice one Ruth, thanks.
Really like this video , well done Ruth
Glad you enjoyed it!
I ❤ tablet and occasionally make it in the winter months as it makes a good Christmas gift!
It isn’t easy to make…I’ve had a few disasters!
@@ruthaisling a sugar thermometer is key and/or watching it like a hawk which isn't easy when there's lots going on in the kitchen!
Your videos really show the best of Scotland and are very well put together and interesting. Definitely inspiring and teaching me things I didn’t know. I think you visited at a particularly good weather window though - I am sure it rains sideways up there for a lot of the year 😂.
Thank you, that's so kind of you to say! Haha maybe, I did visit in August too so better chance of nice weather.
Wow beautiful place
❤❤❤
It really is!
at around 11:50 that looked like goat fudge. It was always so good. Too cold of a country for my. 20c or less is too cold for me in south florida. Another great informative interesting video. But less red. 😞 🙂 thanks.
Yeah it's getting chilly now it's September!
@@ruthaislingI enjoy u videos
another nice video,THANKS
Thanks Warren!
Another fantastic video about yet another beautiful corner of a beautiful country that I can't wait to visit. My only "complaint" is that I'll never have enough time to do it justice! ☺
I’m glad you enjoyed it and hope you can visit soon!
Really loved this video nice to join you on your adventure as I recover from covid ❤
Thank you and hope you feel better soon!
@ruthaisling thank you am making gradual progress just really tiring and annoyed that after 3 years it caught me
Love the videos. Such beautiful scenery every time. Thank you for letting us be a part of your trip. I don't know if you intend going to Lismore off the coast at Oban.
Thank you! Maybe sometime I'll head there, do you recommend it?
I would. Remote enough to enjoy walking and enjoying the awesome Scottish scenery
Great video as I have overnighted on the visitors moorings a few times but never explored the island, hopefully some time. Incidently it is pronounced Geea, not Geha, the gh is silent.
You made me chuckle when you said you don't like marmalade. I used to get teased mercilessly as a child if there was anything with marmalade or dried fruit, because I'd always say "but I dinnae like the peels!" 😠😂
There's a reason you remove it from fruit, and it's not too eat it!
That bramble and peat sounds lovely though.
Oh, and tablet... 😋😋😋
Haha yeah I’m still not a fan of marmalade after trying the ice cream 😂
Looks like a wonderful place ! Glad that you got to see an Otter 😁
I know, mission complete haha!
