The Scottish Island Owned By The Community | Gigha

- I head to the Isle of Gigha, the Scottish Island owned by the community. Located on the west coast of Scotland and accessible from Tayinloan on The Kintyre Peninsula, Gigha is a short 20 minute ferry crossing away, making it a great island for a day trip.
Gigha is a small island in Scotland's Inner Hebrides known for its community ownership model. In 2002, the island's residents successfully purchased Gigha from a private owner through a community buyout scheme, aided by funding from sources like the National Lottery and the Scottish Land Fund. This change in ownership empowered the community to take control of the island's resources and develop sustainable economic opportunities.
Since becoming community-owned, Gigha has made strides in renewable energy, tourism promotion, sustainable agriculture, community engagement, and environmental conservation. The island now boasts wind turbines and solar panels to generate clean energy, welcoming accommodations for tourists, support for local farming, and a commitment to preserving its natural beauty. Gigha's story is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives and their ability to shape the future of their own landscapes and livelihoods.

WHO AM I?
If we haven't met before... Hi, I'm Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!
P.S. Some of the links in this description are affiliate links that I get a kickback from.
I was there in 1976 - we took a very small boat across. I thought we’d arrived in paradise. The water was turquoise, fresh and clear. We hired bicycles and cycled from one end to the other. The garden was then The Horlick’s Garden and we were alone. I like the look of the new campsite. Gigha is referred to as God’s Island. What a fantastic place.
Wow sounds lovely and like nothing much has changed. The new campsite is lovely, so convenient too being close to the ferry and the village
I was on Gigha yesterday for 24 hours. I parked at the Dark Sky Theatre, where I was so lucky to see the northern lights, as well as spectacular Milky Way views. The gardens were well worth the £7 entry fee, too. I really enjoyed my 24 hours there and would recommend it as a detour on the Kintyre 66 route.
Wow sounds fantastic and how amazing to see the northern lights there, the dream! 🙌
Looks like an idyllic Isle to visit. How wonderful its owned by the residents. 💚
Thank you for showing us this beautiful island - it may be small but it seems to have everything you need!
It really is beautiful 😍
Fabulous Ruth, you are doing a great job of publicising your homeland to us, I am already planning how I can enjoy similar road trips. I hope that Tourism Scotland appreciate the work you are doing on their behalf? Great Job!!
Thank you for watching and commenting! Haha, I doubt they've seen any of the videos!

Another fantastic video about yet another beautiful corner of a beautiful country that I can't wait to visit. My only "complaint" is that I'll never have enough time to do it justice! ☺
I’m glad you enjoyed it and hope you can visit soon!
Just picked a jar of blackberries and a jar of nettle seeds two days ago (giving thanks to the plants themselves whilst doing it) they were both quite wonderful and are very healthy.
Nettles are so underrated and misrepresented in our society look up what they do for us Ruth it's pretty amazing really. 🌿💚
I love that! I’m so interested in growing my own veg and herbs and foraging. I really wanted to do more of if this year but the van travel and creating videos has ended up being what I’ve spent a lot of time on. Definitely in the future 🙏
@@ruthaisling Nettles and Blackberries are some of the easiest to forage as they're so abundant and recognisable Sis' this is only my second year gathering Nettle seeds and it's so easy I actually fill a jar of them quicker than I do the Blackberries and OMG! I flipping adore them they've had a really noticeable effect on my vitality or something and that is actually what they are known for.
It's like they put a spring in my step...that's what it feels like.
They taste nice too I hope you're as amazed by them as I am when you do try them.
Don't forage anything next to any roads though because the plants just like trees are cleaning the air of car emmissions for us so they might be a wee bit toxic.
You'll get the hang of it and all the info we need is online anyway.
Good luck Ruth and I really love your posts too.
I spent nearly all of my life outside Scotland too Ruth so I love seeing different parts I don't know about yet.
Your posts inspire me to see some for myself too sometime.
@@zeropointconsciousness Thank you, you've inspired me to pick some nettles!
My G Grandmother was born on Gigha. She sounded like Mrs Dounbtfire and smelled of violets. So proud to be named after such a lovely lady. x
She sounds like a lovely lady!
Interesting to hear of a Scottish version of a bunny chow, as a South African it makes me proud. Love from Mauritius.
Unique island to visit! Very good video! We need you to just swim the pond and visit us in Tennessee! God Bless you Miss Ruth!
Would love to someday
Nice one Ruth, thanks.

I’ve slowly worked my way through most of your vlogs, I’m planning my Scotland tour 2025. The usual NC500 tour just wasn’t attractive to me. There are places I’ve earmarked but your descriptions of your travels have certainly pointed me in the direction that I will be exploring. Thanks Ruth, I close my eyes and I’m nearly there.
Great to hear! I hope it all goes well.
Very unique channel, your personality makes the difference!
Haha thanks!
and her color of "RED"! 🥰
thanks for the interesting video
It's great that the island is managed by the islanders.
It's a beautiful island rich in nature.
It's wonderful!
Another very interesting video and narrative. You do much for visitors to Scotland. Keep them coming. Many thanks. Rmb5*
I have always loved islands. Looking back on many holidays over the years, a fair proportion have been on islands including our favourite - Madeira. I see them as mini countries. What an inspiring story surrounds the community takeover of Gigha and thanks for such a lovely video.
Thank you so much for watching, I heard the scenery in Madeira is amazing!
Gigha sounds and looks like an amazing place. Lovely video beautifully narrated
For nearly a tenner for a 'prawn bap', its certain the Gigha heritage trust won't have too many problems raising money. Lol
Thanks so much for watching!
Thanks for the tour of the island…it looks like a beautiful location!
I was going down to Waterfoot on Sunday, the Mull of Kintyre and Jura were clearly visible - made me think of your last video.
I love the thought of an island owned by the residents 😄
Oh lovely, it's so nice on a clear day!
Thanks for this amazing tour to that island which has beautiful beach, waters and other facilities. I send hellos to you from Turkey 🇹🇷.
Thank you for watching from Turkey!

Hi Ruth Fantastic video. The last time we visited Gigha was when we went Campbeltown and surrounding area. The ferry across in the 90's was less than half of the new one from what I can recall. Tablet is a very sugary food from my Scottish days and as you say too much and it is a bit sickly. I think the big house was open was food.Looked as if you had lovely weather. Regards Crawford
Thanks for watching Crawford, it sounds like you had an amazing trip!
This was fascinating, especially the community ownership aspect.
Thanks for watching, it's really interesting!
i really love that you explore all the less trodden paths of Scotland. Fascinating. Looking forward to the next vlog!
Thank you, I personally prefer places with less people!
Hey Ruth. You made another very fine video ! Thanks for bringing us along!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Really like this video , well done Ruth
Glad you enjoyed it!
I enjoy all your videos! I watched this days ago but on my TV. The images of your videos are so beautiful that I want to see them on the big screen. The garden at the end of this video is so gorgeous! And Lol you finally found your otter. I love them too! Thank you for producing such wonderful videos. ❤
Thank you so much for the lovely comment Mary! I’ll hopefully see a real otter next time haha!
Awesome beautiful, really very much enjoying your channel, thinking of life during migration days and today how peaceful, and serene it is, truly amazing my ancestry from here to United States 1599, looking forward to visiting, and Ulster Northern Ireland we we were the first high kings Dal Fiatach Dynasty, all the very best.
Your video has brought back some great memories of visiting Gigha in about November 2006, staying at Achamore House (the big hoose!) which at the time did B&B. A lot of changed and is new thanks to the community efforts which is great to see. You’ve tempted me to consider a return visit.
Oh wow, what was it like inside, I imagine it to be very grand!
That was just gorgeous! thank you for letting us to see it all!
My pleasure!
Really enjoy your videos, amazing scenery to be found.....

Dear Ruth Love your trip to Isle of Gigha, regards Mike from Yeovil somerset
Thanks for watching Mike, appreciate it!
Your videos really show the best of Scotland and are very well put together and interesting. Definitely inspiring and teaching me things I didn’t know. I think you visited at a particularly good weather window though - I am sure it rains sideways up there for a lot of the year 😂.
Thank you, that's so kind of you to say! Haha maybe, I did visit in August too so better chance of nice weather.
Always interesting Ruth
Your posts motivate us to travel.

Wonderful! Thank you 🙏
🎉thankyou you so very very much, this might be the best video you have made, you have found a place in Scotland that i haven't visited in my 67 years, please keep going but if you are tired take a week off with my permission
Awww that's so kind, thank you!! I hope you can visit sometime, it's a lovely place
Excellent video Ruth, I'm glad you had good weather for your trip, I've been to Gigha over a dozen times and the weather has always been good, it can be dry when the nearby mainland is wet from the rain! Your trip reminds me that I need to visit for leisure and not just for work. A tip for travellers to Gigha, on weekdays the first ferry over can be very busy with contractors, so it's best avoided. Your holiday isn't as vital to the island as someone waiting for a tradesman to call! 👍
That’s a great piece of advice, thanks for sharing!
Really loved this video nice to join you on your adventure as I recover from covid ❤
Thank you and hope you feel better soon!
@ruthaisling thank you am making gradual progress just really tiring and annoyed that after 3 years it caught me

Hello Ruth mick from Hull really enjoyed this episode hope you are doing OK and I will look forward to your next episode xx 😊😊
Thanks for watching from Hull!
Another bonnie adventure on this beautiful Island of Gigha! The scenery & views are stunning, along with the lovely beach & the fascinating Fisherman's Cave, with all the names carved in the rocks from way back, many years ago. Also, the choice of seafood in that wee hut there was amazing & that halibut bagel you had for lunch looked delicious! Along with the cute wee Ice Cream Parlor, with the home made Ice Cream & in such unique Flavors. As well as, the wee honesty box filled with baked goods. What a treat that would be! Only in Scotland! Aye lass!
I was also really happy to see you eating your porridge there! No doubt trying to keep up with auld John Taylor from Lead Hills Village! Well good for you! Perhaps you'll make it to 137 years yourself now lass. LOL. I'm also glad to see that there were no spiders in your porridge hiding in the blackberries though.Very tickly going down I would imagine! Let's hope old John didn't have any spiders in his either! Although, maybe that was his real secret of living such a long life! LOL
.I also really loved the South part of the Island, especially the lovely Achamore Gardens. They are just so lush & beautiful, with such pretty flowers, exotic plants, foliage, trees, the cool bamboo maze and... lots of bumble bees. All this, along with such an interesting history as well. It looks very peaceful there & it would be such a joy to just walk around the gardens & take in the beauty all around you. Then to top it all off, there is that amazing view! Stunning! Finally, there's the Boathouse & that delicious looking Seafood Curry dinner that you had. My mouth was watering just watching you eat it. Yum! Wow! There's no doubt about it, this is a beautiful Island! The people who live & own land or homes on this lovely Island of Gigha are truly blessed! Thank you for sharing this delightful experience!
Your comments about John Taylor and his porridge have me laughing out loud 😂😂
Thank you for you lovely comment! So enjoyable and entertaining to read
We have wild Blackberries all around us here in Humboldt county by the Sea. Love this video 💜 Happy travels!

Thank you! Maybe sometime I'll head there, do you recommend it?
I would. Remote enough to enjoy walking and enjoying the awesome Scottish scenery
You have an older Hiace just like me! Although mine is my work van with a tentbox on the roof! I'm planning a big Scotland trip next year in her! They're slow but reliable old beasts. Loved your video, looking forward to watching more of your content! :-)
Thanks Ben, Toyota Hiace vans are really great. Hopefully lots more years in them!
Such a beautiful place.

My parents were Scots moved to America in 1950 after the war, I want to visit again so I'll keep watching your videos for inspiration to get off my butt & go back..{ Last time there was 1976 } :)
Please come back again soon!
I lived on Islay for 12 years and the ferries from Kennacraig to Islay used to stop at Gigha. I never got to go though, shame 😢
A reason to go back!
Great video
Thanks!
Been on my bucket list for several years. Had planned on visiting a few years back for my 40th but the pandemic ruined it. Would love to compete in the island boat race or visit the music festival. Looks so much fun
Looks like a wonderful place ! Glad that you got to see an Otter 😁

This was so interesting. I think we heard about this sort of plan on an episode of Landward but your additional information and history was so interesting. And tablet. Well. Just delicious!! I’ve never made my own but i do make no-fail vanilla fudge for gifts at Christmas. I will certainly be buying fudge when we’re in Scotland next week.

Wow what a fantastic place I've never heard of it, just the isle of Eigg (can you take us there?) also owned by a trust/the inhabitants so I guess as you said it's encouraged by the Scottish Gvt. I wonder, could thes isles be independent? 😉 I love tablet, my friend from Dingwall makes a mean tablet haha. I bought a 1.9kg tub of Ross's tablet, it's lasted me 5mths, I stil have a bit left! Love your vids Ruth!
I love tablet too! And yes I hope to visit Eigg someday.
Hey Ruth that was a lovely video, so interesting. We alway seem to head North but you have given us ideas off the West coast. Cal Mac do an Island Hopping ticket must give that a try one year. You made me chuckle when you said you don't like marmalade. I used to get teased mercilessly as a child if there was anything with marmalade or dried fruit, because I'd always say "but I dinnae like the peels!" 😠😂
There's a reason you remove it from fruit, and it's not too eat it!
That bramble and peat sounds lovely though.
Oh, and tablet... 😋😋😋
Haha yeah I’m still not a fan of marmalade after trying the ice cream 😂
Can really relate to the sour berry face😅 Sometimes you get a extra tangy one.

"well they're winky" 😜
Charged as a car ! Nice one, usually per metre with a van. You scored. I do note your red van is a perfect size for the smaller ferries.
Sometimes charged as a car and sometimes as a motorhome, I guess it maybe depends on the person working or the ferry company / route!

You mentioned the mild climate due to the gulf stream. Is this island the inspiration for Summer isle as in the film the Wicker man. Great vid, planning a trip next year.
I'm not sure actually. I must get round to watching the Wickerman as lots of it was filmed in southern Scotland where I'm from! Enjoy your trip to Gigha!
Hi Ruth, You mentioned purchasing land at the beginning, but are foreigners also able to purchase under the same conditions? Recently, the number of overseas buyers has been increasing in Japan, but the value of land is likely to be divided. The atmosphere of the island seems to be similar to that of Japan. It is a moderately sized island for tourists to enjoy local specialties, and it is not completely touristy, so it seems that you can enjoy a moderate local feeling. How do backpackers without cars spend their time? There are all sorts of places to see, so you can easily enjoy the magnificent nature.
Yes, foreigners can also buy land in Scotland. A man from Denmark is Scotland's biggest landowner - www.scotsman.com/arts-and-culture/this-danish-businessman-is-now-the-largest-landowner-in-scotland-564902
There is public transport in Scotland like trains and buses but they might be infrequent and not as reliable / punctual like in Japan!
There is Scottish government and crowdfunding support for local communities to buy land from absentee landlords and there are increasing areas of land being purchased by the local people.
Eigg is an amazing place, and I have been there often.
You can take a car onto the island on a ferry, or take a bicycle.
Or just walk, but it would take several days to see all the island has to offer on foot.
And the weather can deliver four seasons in a day, for most of the year.
And the people are great.
I’m sure you can find transport answers if you Google the Eigg trust.
Taxis will be possible, even a bus . Or hitch; it’s not the American Midwest!
Just don’t be in a hurry; there is no translation for emergencies like mañana in Gaelic
I really enjoy your trips to all places in Scotland! Have there been any places serving plaice fish? I really liked plaice when I was there many years ago.
I have seen it the odd time but it's not too common!
There are also some mainland estates that have been bought back by the people from millionaire land owners. We need much more of this. Get the land back into public ownership locally.
That's brilliant to hear!
@@ruthaisling Assynt is a good example. Up by Lochinver. A massive community buyout.
No way. A bunny chow! That is a dish native to South Africa, specifically Durban in Kwazulu Natal. what a surprise! Im sure there must be a story of how that ended up on the menu

Do the residents also own the ferry terminal and boat. Thanks for the info about what makes you happy and experiences.
