These companies no longer believe in long term growth. Its all about short term profit. Its so sad.
German cars drive nice and look good. (Premium) But if they fail they often fail good. Maintenance by the book is key. Not cheap.
@@Oh-That-Guy-Again
Parents bought VW Beetle new in 1974. Thought it was funny how air from the spare tire pressurized the windshield squirters.
Over engineered money pits? So what else is new with German cars. A friend of mine had a German convertible in the 1990s, and the bushings for the convertible top would slightly wear and they'd have to be replaced or they would bind, he had a whole bag of these bushings. Remember the car commercial joking about German cars about how one must first shim and rebalance the wipers blades?
It goes back even farther than that. My grandfather was the type to try a lot of different kinds of cars, and bought a Mercedes, and if you think some domestic or Japanese brands are bad about finding ways to weasel out of honoring warranty coverage (in my experience, both Japanese and the one American brand I've had all do a pretty good job with warranties) you've obviously not had a German brand. Oh, BTW, my boss is German but working here as a permanent resident alien, and he absolutely despises German cars, won't touch them with a ten foot pole, thinks that German engineering is greatly overrated and that so many Germans think it is so good he chalks up to a national delusion. Germans do seem to be very good at deceiving themselves.
Another instance of it was the Audi brake problem.
And all these people crowing that we should be more like Germany or Europe, but Germany would be among the 5 poorest US states if it were a US state, and that was BEFORE their current economic malaise. Pretty bad when the wealthiest European country is that poor, and France is even worse.
I was lucky in 1965. I bought a brand new white VW Bug with red interior black walls and chrome hubcaps. It was gorgeous I worked for Western Union. I drove it 90,000 miles in three years never had a problem. Wish I would’ve never sold it. It was gorgeous.. i’m 83 and still think of that car with fond memories.
I bet it was under 2000.00
I guess you oppose the enormous amount of corporate welfare Louisiana provides.
We still have our fantastic 1968 VW Beetle. It's cared for, and is just beautiful. Four on the floor and ready to go.
@@rioman7708 I had a 73 super beetle convertible and I worked for Western Union CTB in Reno Nevada for 5 years!!
Should of bought a dozen you'd be a millionaire if you left them undriven.
I always regret selling my 1980 Ford Bronco. Simple vehicle to work on. Reliable. Owned it 1990 till 2004.
I got a real story! I work at a Chevrolet dealership. A customer bought the all new redesign chevy equinox 2024. The very next day it was back with a back wheel bearing! Talk about quality.😮
The same for Toyota dealerships a family member bought a rav4 and was a lemon, if you do a google search you can find some for sale.
sad sad sad
I'm driving a 2007 Chevy Trailblazer I bought new in 2007. It's 17 years old and I've never had any problems with it.
@@mrld3005 Toyota's quality, workmanship, reliability, and Dealer Service plummeted when they started making them in the US.
Doesn't Chevy have a JT Power Award for initial quality? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love how Scotty isn't afraid to speak his mind.👍 We're friends with the parks commissioner in our city and he told me a couple of years ago that he's known a number of people that have purchased new Grand Cherokees and not one of them has lasted 100k miles before blowing the engine. I'll keep replacing parts on my XJ until the unibody disintegrates.
The two seats on airline flights content was amazing (and very brave in today's world). Thank you for being real.
What about loud passengers who wave their arms around when they talk?
@@NVRAMboi They usually also wave there germs around doing so.
I'm fairly certain buying two seats doesn't matter. Airlines oversell flights and then force people into seats next to those who intended to buy two seats.
I had 3 BMW's and now drive a Lexus, and the mistake I made is not switching sooner. When I see people zoom by in the BMW's, "I feel sorry for them" is the first thing that comes to mind.
BMW had a sweet spot era in the early 2000's. They'd finally gotten over their long stretch of sour reliability records and actually got into the top 5 of Consumer Reports reliable sporty cars (mostly because of the 3 and 5 series). But now? They've gone model diversity nuts. And ridiculous complications that impact reliability all for... what? "The Ultimate Driving Machine" is now the "Ultimate Expensive Machine." They're focused more on seductive looks and in-cabin entertainment than reliability.
To be fair, the VW Bug was never really that reliable, just very easy to repair.
Owned three of them 1 day it was very icy out. Had to pick up the kids (60's). Gas pedal was frozen,
so I drove all the way to get all three of them using the choke. True story! Loved my VW bugs and
had so much fun driving them. 🤣🤣I now own a 2000 Subaru Outback what an amazing car.
My friend could rebuild two VW bug engines a day in his driveway by himself. Another 40,000 miles was good enough for his customers.
Is that the modern version or the original Hitler version?
@@glenncrooks2014 Used 59, others I don't remember the years.
Total ripoff. Did you ever open the hood? NO ENGINE!!
Manufacturers just moved away from what common people want.... Just simple reliable and affordable cars
Amen, I can't believe all the crap they put on the cars, trucks and SUVs. Just so they can jack the prices up. Pickup trucks aren't trucks anymore. I am 74 with a 05 Taurus I'm retired going to drive it til it just gives up. Then I'll have Uber drive me around! Why do these cars have 400hp? Just need simple cars for a simple price.

That’s how China is killing VW. Better quality Lower price. The United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) Free Trade Agreement is fast becoming a free trade agreement for the world, whereas any multinational with a presence in Mexico can set up shop and make the U.S. its number one target. China is doing that now. How will Detroit compete?

I (age 6) started elementary school in Japan in1950. Many of my toys were metal and if you took them apart, you could see inside that it was made from an America food product. I remember my mother showing a Japanese seamstress a Sears catalog. That woman made our clothes from just the catalog pictures.
• In the 1950's, peeps complained that Japanese cameras were just copies of German cameras. But, by the mid-1960's, peeps now said they make them better than the Germans.
No, you are high. Get a grip.
Yeap growing up we thought Japanese products were cheap. But they got better and better. Then in the 80s and on they were the products to buy if you wanted quality.
And now China. It is china’s auto industry, which offers better quality and lower price that is taking market share quickly in Europe and China. Next Detroit: The United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) Free Trade Agreement is fast becoming a free trade agreement for the world, whereas any multinational with a presence in Mexico can set up shop and make the U.S. its number one target. China is doing that now. BTW: China owns Volvo. How will Detroit deal with China offering better quality and lower prices?
Yeah well Japanese quality Winters crap in the 90s I had two Sony TVs that failed within a year and a half and of course we're out of warranty and had to be paid for to be fixed
At this point I’ll stick to 1990’s till about 2012 cars of course depending on the brand. Some people want tech I want reliability as many do. Keep the older cars on the road 😎
2012-2016 is the newest I'd ever go, and I'm keeping my 2004 car until it rusts out. (damn you road salt)
@@myk1_sp yeah road salt is a killer haha. I kinda contradicted myself I do have a 18 challenger 5.7 auto. It’s enough tech for me to understand. Even though I’m in my late 20’s I don’t like huge screens like tablets if you will. I do have a 78 Chevy Malibu and a 09 accord lx. Once the Honda goes. I’d like a 91-11 TC 92-11 Crown Vic same with Mercury Gran Marquis. List goes on but it’s mainly 90’s cars.
@Austin.97 Those are some good picks, luckily the 3 valve 4.6s from what I've read don't have the huge problems like some of the 3 valve 5.4s.

My 67 Bug was awesome. Simple, reliable.
@@HenryWeems-kr9wr like someone commented about the old bugs ,that they were not reliable, just super easy to fix..
I've had 8 1960's Bugs All very reliable, and simple to fix. Plus a 1972 Super Beetle that just never broke down.
I had a 67 Bug, too. It worked great for me. Bought a roof rack and put my 17-foot canoe on top of it. Had some great times in it!
2004 Ford Crown Victoria. Nearly 500,000 miles. Just routine service and maintenance through the years.
My neighbor has a 2004
Car manufacturers don’t make as much money if their cars last 30 years. Look at Toyota, their cars are not as reliable as they used to be so now they are engineered obsolescence so you come back every 5 or 6 years. They make more money that way.
Think about what happened with toasters, then TVs, now automobiles. It's the same reasons but now it's on a global scale and government involvement is out of control.
Planned obsolescence is a US concept, most commonly attributed to a General Motors manager. He apparently got the idea from bicycle manufacturers, though.
It's the American way! Toyota and Lexus quality and reliability went down when they started making them in the US. I'm so glad my 20 yr old Lexus was made in Japan, no problems other than normal wear and tear.
Exactly. I was an appliance repairmen for 39 years and I watched the quality of appliances go down the drain. They just force you to buy another appliance.
I just wish that the car company in the US just made cars like they use to user friendly to work with when things break down so you can repair it your self and keep the technology out of cars
then how would the ford mechanics make their money?
@@michaelcadieux the company’s can make the parts at a reasonable price…make more people eager to go to the dealer ship to get the parts but it’s not like that…they charge a lot for there “OEM” parts when you can get it third parts that are the same quality for a better price. you can now expand the market for everyone…but only if car company made it affordable it would get more people to go into the dealership and possibly leave with a car 🤷🏽 and for the people that don’t like to work on there cars or don’t know how to you can take to the dealership and have them maintenance your vehicle at a reasonable price.
The average car buyer can't even change a tire. And you want them to work on their car?
@@WALTERBROADDUS and why do you think that is…just because people that don’t choose to work on there cars doesn’t mean the people that do should suffer if they can do it themselves.
@@AheadChart6gaming720 Because you don't sell to a statistical minority of customers. Of the thousands of cars made. Very few owners have this desire. You produce to the majority.
I worked at German new car dealers in the Seattle area for 20 years before I retired in 2014. I was continually amazed by the constant, very expensive issues that customers complained to me about. Then they would buy another new one! The basis of a lot of the issues was the horrible design and quality of the Bosch parts in the electrical systems. I could write a very long, very boring book about the disasters I witnessed, and the cartons of Kleenex I dispensed to upset clients. I drove shuttle van, and was on a first-name basis with hundreds of customers, who I saw literally every month. When I would gently suggest that they might have better luck with a Toyota or Honda, these geniuses would respond "I don't like Japanese cars". BILL
They deserve what they buy. They are stupid. I love Japanese cars because they do not betray you. They are still made with passion by a people who believe in quality in everything they do.
Whats wrong with bosch parts? From what I have seen they appear to be good quality
My son sold Mazdas in Dallas, said they hated seeing someone drive a VW product on the lot, because they had such low trade in value, they would tell them go back to a VW dealer they might give them a lil more. Said they also had a lil 72 year old grandmother salesperson they called the assassin 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
@@Thund3rcrash Bosch have a bad name here in the UK.
I had a 1975 VW Dasher I bought brand new and it was the most UNRELIABLE car I've ever owned. Why you ask? 2 words: ROBERT BOSCH. Everything electrical crapped out at least once: alternator, voltage regulators, sensors, and a wiring harness that smoked at about 1K miles out of warranty. This is without mentioning broken brake adjusters, A/T vacuum modulators, and sundry other items.
I once voiced my anger with Bosch quality - or, more apropos, the lack thereof - in a dealership once. I said that the Germans must have lost the WW II tank battle at Kursk to the Soviets because all the German tanks had Bosch electrical systems that broke down. I saw 2 prospective customers leave the showroom and I was then asked to leave in no uncertain terms. Well, I was happy that I cost them a sale, anyway.

maybe if people werent so scared of nuclear power we could support charging them without using coal and oil to do so. in the US republicans just have to have coal jobs they cant live without it. its not our fault green energy is harder to get.
@ArcturusAlpha you need sources of energy besides nuclear for the fluctuations of power requirements on the grid. Things like coal are great for that.

Totally agree about enormous people in one seat. I have experienced that. Good for you to mention that!
In 1980 i bought a new caddy. The owners manual said you deserve the best. The unwritten words were "you are not gonna get it" i the first 6 months i had a 1 inch thich warranty receipt collection.
I don't know, i bought a used 2012 vw cc in 2018. It has the 2.0 turbo and when we bought it it had about 115k on the odometer. I keep the oil changed and now almost 7 years and 100k miles later the only thing i've iver had to do to it is replace a rear wheel bearing. $400 bucks. i have zero complaints.

I put 235,000 miles on a 2012 passat and the most trouble it gave me was I had to replace the control arms. Other than that it was routine stuff. Im in a 2024 gti now and have confidence it will be just fine.

My Cadillac CTS AWD 2011 has over 150000 miles on it only had problem with it. The alternator went out on two months ago. Fit finish and paint are all top notch and it’s a 13 year old car. I will buy another Cadillac AWD when the time comes.
the airplane seats thing is ridiculous. Those seats are barely wide enough for a child, much less a normal size person. The airlines are at fault for cramming in extra seats and making them smaller. My shoulders go 4 to 5 inches into the seat next to me.
They'd better start checking the weight of the plane before takeoff with all the heavy people aboard.
I think Scotty may have had some traumatizing plane flights in his past...
Airline seats are too tight as it is so I don't see how they can fit someone that big in to todays airline seating. I haven't flown in years because of the hassle of flying, being forced to sit in such tight seating, and the cost of flying. Flying use to be somewhat fun prior to 9/11/2001 but not anymore.

Scotty I am always amused by your posts, and tend to agree most of the time. But this time as a post graduate Economist you are absolutely spot on! You might like to comment why Australians are waiting years to pay at least A$80,000 on a 70 series Land Cruiser that is so basic, not particularly comfortable, vinyl floors, wind up windows 5 speed manual gearbox, fm am radio. How often do you have to repair a wind up window mechanism? Just this year they are dropping the 4.5 litre V8 turbo diesel that produces a whopping (sic) 151kw and replaced with their 2.8 litre 4 cyd. turbo diesel that puts out 150kw with a six speed auto gearbox. (all lifted from the hi Lux and Prado models). We'll see how they last but that was all done to meet government emission and consumption requirements.
Scotty, I enjoy your channel and appreciate you sharing your vast knowledge. Question: given that the US is by far the largest consumer of oil in the world. And that a whopping 68% of that oil goes to transportation. Is it not worth it to wean us off of fossil fuels, even if that costs money? If your answer is yes, then do you have any suggestions other than EV’s to accomplish that? I’ve heard of H2, but I’ve also heard there’s lots of issues with that, too. What about modular batteries that are made in the USA and can be automatically changed? Then, convert gas stations into drive thru refueling stations, creating jobs and helping fight climate change.
I love Scotty. He's the end. Tells it like it is.

VW is also shutting down a factory that produces Passat in Nanjing, China
Love your rant. Saying what the rest of us are thinking. 👍
Nobody wants to be obese and many times being overweight is a result of an underlying medical issue. My best friend is in her 60's and just lost over 120 pounds in 5 weeks. 117 pounds of that was water weight due to heart failure. How horrible the things she had to deal with while being overweight and unable to do anything about it. For months she tried so hard to get her weight under control while the water kept building up.Depression set in. But there for the grace of God go I. I prefer kindness.
If she had that much water weight then she must have had kidney issues too.
Processed foods and seed oils and sugar are mostly to blame. Look around it’s shocking the amount of crap is in most grocery carts people buy! The tobacco companies now own the major food companies and they know how to make addicted people. Look at every box of food the amount of chemicals is overwhelming most are not allowed in Europe. That’s what is making people sick eating bad food!

I have a 19 Ranger with 84k on it. At 10k, they had to pull the dash because the vents were jammed. It was a quick fix because now they are stuck in the middle. Heat on driver side AC on passenger side. Weak housing unit, i guess. At 65k, the transmission went. That was the major problems the small issues are too many to mention.
Toyota keep looking at these other companies and saying when ya gonna catch up 😂😂😂😂🤔
I’ve owned two brand new VW’s. They hold up well until about 60k-70k miles after which you’ll incur a hefty bill every 5k miles. If I get another, I’ll sell it every few years or lease one. They’re great until they’re not.

Way to say it exactly how it is with some auto manufacturers Scotty. And yes, the resale market is a great way to assess resale value of what you're buying, and therefore reliability. They all have issues, but man, I am terrified of letting go of my 2012 acura... bulletproof.

The vast majority of people who have trouble with their VW do zero maintenance and or do not do the simplest stuff it takes to keep what are mostly high performance vehicles running nicely and you’ve said it yourself.
