The deer looked so healthy because they had feasted on your plants! ☺️ 8:25 That’s such a wonderful wildflower bouquet! 🥰 “Not a good workflow here.” This was so incongruous it made me smile. 😊 City office worker Maya meets rural paradise Maya. ❤❤❤❤❤
I recently bought a Makita 368 battery strimmer. Not cheap, but the same power as a gasoline one. Without the noise. Without the toxic fumes. Without the smell and without pulling a rope to start, like in 1903. One solar panel could load the thing forever. For free.
Maya, as others have suggested … next time you have to go away maybe see if a local can grazing their goats or sheep on your property. Just put wire around any herbs or plants you want protected, like you did to the walnut trees. Wonderful to see you back, love your enthusiasm & joy
Thank you for being such a wonderful inspiration for me. I am much older than you and have a large property that I am trying to manage myself. Each time I watch your videos, I grab my gear and head out to do some trimming of all the weeds. I often feel overwhelmed with the work, but find your positive spirit uplifts me and I can keep going. All the best on your little piece of paradise.
Inquire about making a pond at the top of your land, that way you can pipe the water down to your plants instead of hauling the water up from the river. The area where it floods the walnuts might be a good place to put it.
Maya you should consider having a couple goats to keep your land fauna low. You could move them to different areas of land to avoid you having to constantly Keep strimming. ❤ The deer are beautiful and so is your land and stream. ❤
She’s not around all year. Thus I assume it would be difficult for her to have someone take care of them, when she’s not there. She also wants to plant veggies and trees and it would be extra work to fence everything in, so that the goats don’t eat her food. I assume she would have to move the goats around and fence them in instead. She has that river/creek there as well…farm animals poo and pee all the time, I wouldn’t want them do that near the water, but I wouldn’t want to deal with the smell either. Maybe I’m just not properly informed, I apologize if I’m totally off. No experience here! Just watched an episode of “Mossy Earth” how they are going to rewild/renaturalize a river in Scotland I think, which was contaminated by farm animals. It’s often overlooked, but with time that water just isn’t safe anymore.
@@suze6083 I'm not an expert either but I wonder if goats are a bit too intrusive aswell. Maybe an animal that cuts the grass but doesn't eat literally everything would be better around the tree area. I know alpacas do this for example and they also poo in one area. As for the river area I would really look into plants that cover a lot of ground and are more fire resistant, so that the weeds and grasses have less space to grow.
great videos Maya! is it possible to consider putting down some mulch or gravel in places or paths that you dont want the weeds to grow? this may reduce the amount of work you need to do everytime you come back.
You are just so very lovely, your joy for your hard earned property is a loving adventure. I'm so glad I came up on your channel. I hope you enjoy your magical stream. ❤
beautiful property and great worker congratulations! a tip, when using the brushcutter always cut to the same side. Cut to the side that works best for you. if you cut from right to left, when going back to the right, raise the brushcutter a little so as not to cut straw in the opposite direction. so the straw is all lined up on the same side and then it is easier to pick up the garbage and the path is always clean. another tip for when you go to the river, there are shoes suitable for beaches with a lot of stones or coarser sand, you can find them at decathlon and the feeling is that you are walking barefoot but with your feet protected If you put animals prefer sheeps instead of goats…gotas will eat and destroy everything Keep going
I recently came across people using goats to clear land. Where I am from my family just has goats that we keep but sometimes you can find people who have goats that they can rent out to you for a day and those beautiful creatures clear land like magic in a day or two. May help a lot with the weed situation. then you just get to uproot the weeds afterwards.
Your smile and positive outlook is motivating me to look at things differently in my life. It doesn't seem like much gets you down. I admire your work ethic. Thanks for being such role model. Weeding my yard seems like a breeze after watching your videos. 😂
Remember how the water was in the river when you first came back? That water, now that the trees are cut down, is coming rushing down that hill, perhaps.
Maya keep your rpm's up on your trimmers, no lugging of motor, air flow keeps them cool, centrifigal clutch is probably burnt from not enough rpm to engage clutch!
Hello Maya, I have an idea for you about the deer. If you put some "Deer crossing signs" where you want the deer to go it will be easier for them to navigate your property. I am not sure if the deer can read English or Portugese better! Thank you for the video..Peace and blessings bye for now
Hi Maya! You might look into getting a scythe as well - and get someone (probably of the older generation) to teach you how to use it. It is simple once you know how to. It is surprisingly effective and fast in helping you clear overgrown grass and weeds in areas where there are no large rocks in the midst of said grass/weeds. Love your property and all my best wishes to all your projects there. Also, I’m a mom so I can’t help myself and remind you: don’t forget to hydrate! 😊💕
You should do something for the weed situation, otherwise you will have to trim them every few weeks in spring/summer. Removing the root would be an impossible job, there are too many. Using chemicals isn't ideal. I would put something over them (plastic tarps, wooden planks, ... not palets) for a few months to deprive them of sun to kill them, at least around the property and on the pathways.
Hey Maya, love your channel, your style and approach. If there's one piece of advice for you is to get a trimmer with a big handle for both hands, when you get the chance. That makes handling them so much easier and less straining. Keep having fun!
Glad to see you're back. Have been waiting all winter for new videos :) Regarding the strimmer: it looks very odd and exhausting how you're holding it. Have you tried to pull it up a little higher (make the harness shorter) so that you work while walking upright (and not bend your knees and back as much)? Don't mean to mansplain, I would've asked the same if you were a man :)
Maya you might already be doing this but this is something we have learnt so I will share… to help not overheat your strimer you need to not run it continuously… not sure if I can explain, will give it a try…. so when you sway it left rev it… then stop, then as you sweep left, rev it again.. it sounds strange.. but those little pauses give the engine a bit of a break xx
It could be worth finding out if you have a neighbor who would be willing to let a few goats or sheep graze the property say once a week. To help keep things sort of manageable.
You gave me the idea to look for land in Portugal I love your content, I recently found that lots of orange peels containing oils can mulch and prevent things growing, if the oil is removed first, the peels cover the grasses and allow other plants to grow, you might be able to get an orange juice factory to give you peels that have had the oil removed? The forest will grow even faster. Do people do house sitting and maintenance over there?
So surprised to see all the growth on your place! You are such a hard worker and the place is looking so nice! I am looking forward to seeing all of your progress this season! Take care and thanks for sharing.
❤ your channel, you are such an inspiration to me. From South Africa and starting my Homestead in the KwaZulu Natal forest Hills soon .. Martina and my dogs
The brushcutter is probably with a a burn "embraiagem "(clutch?) due to constant use of acelerator, up and down...they prefer to be more constant on medium to high revs...you have a lock button to the "embraiagem", use it if possible. Also, that brushcutter isnt ideal for that work, heavy work, with big tick weeds and bushes. With the heavy work you have there (lots of humidity) you would be better to fine tune yourself and the gear you use, and probably use some herbicides, at least in stairways, pathways ,etc. It would be more ecologic (less gasoline, oil, steel, and backpain). If you compost on ground it will better the soil to grow even more vigorous... In that clima, and good soil you have, you need to clean/cut the weeds, at least 3 times a year, between january and july, to maintain it liveable and safe.
All of these plants are full of seeds. Mow or cut when green and remove all cuttings otherwise the seeds dry, drop into the dirt and regrow heavier than before.

Hi maya ! 😊 I just watched this video today . I think you cut an edible fern in your lawn. We call it “ Paco Fern “ here in the philippines . It is so delicious specialy when you make it ensalada (blanched fern salad). You should try it 😊
My property was almost as bad as yours with being so badly over grown. And I ended up grabbing a rake, and was able to use that to grab the weeds, vines, and grass that were making my property such a mess, and rip the plants in question out of the ground. (Take your rake, slap it down on the weeds from above, then jerk sharply towards yourself. Repeat this action as many times as needed until you have an area that is laying on the ground, then you get to the side of the weeds and slam your rake into the mess of weeds on the ground. Then you just pile everything up to burn or compost, which ever method you prefer.). I am trying to get the weeks to stay gone instead of just cutting them back every few weeks.
Goodness, the weeds sure did grow a lot whilst you were away! Good to see you back! I was a little concerned to see you strimming with bare legs if a stone flew and hurt you, it's a fair way to get help! Please be careful and think of your health and safety 🙂.
You need a goat to keep those weeds down. You have plenty of food and water available for them to access by themselves so they wouldn't need much care. You would have to fence off your garden but you should probably do that any way to keep the deer away.
with the river so close one could install a micro hydro power generator, d,c power to a bank of batteries ,then to , an inverter from which you could power up a number of electrical appliances, refrigerator, lights power points computer so on . As for them weeds I think that poison may be your only option. Although I personally don’t like spraying poison about

Maya! What about you putting some kind of hydroelectric motor connected to batteries, for when the river runs fast in thd winter? Plus your Walnut plants should only be pruned during cold weather, otherwise they can bleed badly, which could lead to diseases entering thd plant.🤔

You should hire some goats next time everything grows that big again.
I was thinking the same 🐐❤️
The best solution of all: to allow neighbours's cattle get into your property. Animals clean all the excess.😊
@@Clavel688 cattle would ruin her river banks and water quality. Their poo also spreads weeds and parasites.😢
