Historical Hair Growth Secret?

  • Have you ever wondered how so many historical women were able to grow such long and healthy hair? I have! That's why, after a chin-length hair cut almost 6 years ago, I incorporated many historical hair care practices into my routine. My hair is now at hip length, which is longer than it has ever been able to grow my entire life thus far.
My main hair care routine that has grown my hair (in a nutshell):
    1) I only use natural, mostly DIY products that are technically edible.
    2) Wash only once a week with rhassoul clay
    3) Weekly scalp and hair oil treatments
    4) Gentle dry finger detangling
    5) "Sealing" hair ends regularly with a light oil

Chinese and Indian people have best hair hands down. I appreciate that they culturally and historically would wash it and keep it clean. And also care about things like skincare and hygiene. they passed down for generations. they used things like spices, rice water, hair masks, natural oils, made soaps etc. to keep it clean while also grow thick shiny long and healthy, they valued long hair.

@@lawyerreactsnotthemoon85 Most every culture has its hygiene and beauty wisdom. Much has been lost with some cultures more than others.
North American tribes still have good advice that many don't know about. It's something I'm more certain of because I'm from the southwest of Mexican descent. Jojoba oil has been used for hair and skin. Yucca root has been turned into a soft natural shampoo. Avocado hair masks are more Mexican. A variety of clays have been used for skincare. Aloe vera and cacti gel have also been helpful. That's just an example.
It's best to figure out your own ancestors' ways and what you can do with fresh local ingredients. I'm sure Asian recipes work well for many types of people, but it's easier to use what is near and what may already be part of one's DNA. It's no different than food and diet.

a huge reason their hair didn’t get as dirty is because they seldom ever exposed it to the elements or had it down in situations that would cause excessive dirtiness. our hair is exposed daily to air pollution, the victorians and edwardians always had their hair up, or when they were outside, they wore a hat pretty much always.

not to most of these women were of high social status which means they had slaves and servants to do everything for them. They sat in the house all day doing leisurely activities like needlework and tea parties. And had access to baths regularly, they had better hygiene than most people in those days. If you look at average people pictures in those days they had bad skin, and teeth. And they never had regular baths. Most the times they only washed their face, hands, and privates in a bowl in the morning. Hair was also sleek backed for men or braided and put up if you were a woman and they usually wore a bonnet type cap or hat to prevent hair from getting caught in something, it was dangerous for women to wear hair down in those days. People didn’t even baths in rivers because they though you would get sick from it. They went to the barbershop to get there hair washed and cut and dental work done like once a year if you were lucky.

@@carmensandiego5386it’s kinda funny to see all the myths people possessed about hygiene back then and also people nowadays say it’s cuz they’re poor or working class, yet people from indigenous cultures with no money used the natural world around them to stay clean and had excellent hygiene hair and skin. They bathed in rivers and used herbs to wash their hair and skin, they chewed on sticks to keep their teeth clean. Tribes still do this today and have excellent teeth. It seems that Europeans were just not resourceful before the Industrial Revolution.

Though a lot of what you said is true these pictures show exceptions anyhow. Think taking photographs wasn't very common and a rather rare event in live. The photos shown have likely been taken BECAUSE of the exceptional hairgrowth of that individual woman.
Women slept in braids which prevents hair friction. But we must not forget that they had greasy hair for most of the time. Fluffy hair wasn't always the fashion anyways. In many eras women (and men) protected their hair with a headscarf (or hat) to prevent from getting dirty.
Edit: I corrected a spelling mistake. I'm a non native speaker of English and I'm so astounded someone takes in the effort to comment on one mistake in such a lengthy comment. Maybe, dear Ms Know-it-all try and explain a complex topic in say Portuguese or German or Vietnamese or Greenlandic. Good luck 🤞.

I'm 38 n my sister 37...our Momma is 55. We did this also with Momma as we grew up, but added a mayonnaise conditioning once a month...we would wash 3 or 4 times a week. Since I've been 18 n on my own...I wash my hair once, rarely twice, a week n sometimes will go 2 weeks before washing. This depends on if I have an appointment or something that would call for more than an up-do n no greasy look at all....there are times when I feel it necessary for me to wash 4 days because of this. I still do the brushing 100 strokes every strand n rainwater at times n braiding/covering hair for sleep n mayonnaise/lard conditioning. I haven't used vinegar at all since on my own n I never dry my hair/use a straightener/use a curling iron or hot rollers (no heat) n no product mouse/hairspray/balm/anything at all n I dont dye my hair (I have in past n was always healthy but only when wet, even w highlights, my hair would feel like a wet Halloween wig which was odd). I brush/finger comb before I shower n i wash my hair long meaning i dont ball up like most but rather i massage into my scalp whilst leaning back n letting hair hang naturally n then I part hair in half n wash length leaning to side I wash by laying hair on hand n massaging in with other n then squeezing n finger combing through n I rinse the same way. I squeeze hair out in shower like I have my whole life because my Momma taught me to before just putting towel on first, then I throw my head over n then back a few times n squeeze hard again from scalp to end, I towel dry which again i dont ball up but rather i massage/pat my scalp n then take towel n squeeze all length by patting in middle n leaning over to watch ever side again only squeezing n patting but never rubbing. I finger comb, I let air dry, when damp I brush from ends to roots slowly as Momma taught so not to break, I finger comb after this to gather any other loose hairs....that's all. Every day I brush and spread natural oils by rubbing scalp n rubbing down to end, which keeps hair healthy n from drying. My hair has grown from a very short cut (bottom was to the base of my scull...I wanted my hair cut just above my shoulders for a change because was to my butt n she absolutely butchered it n cut that sill "karen" angle longer in front n base skull in back, so I had to go elsewhere to have it fixed n to have it fixed I had to do a pixie because my hair is thick/wavy n so had to be thinned out which meant short pixie layers) to my butt in 3 1/2 years, this is with me cutting my hair a few times myself (first time or 2 was to make even along bottom so many inches, third n 4th time 2 inch cut n few long layers). I have been told every since 18, doing some things was taught but the things I've changed since 18, by every person who has done my hair that my hair grows so fast n thick n healthy n ask what product I use n are shocked when I say nothing at all accept cheap Suave shampoo n conditioner (only ends) n tell them my process the last 20 years. So I'm just sticking to what I do.

Its crazy how diff afro hair is - I can go 3 months without a wash and there's no smell and no build up of oil because its so naturally dry. My blonde friend can barely go 4 days before her hair is clumping from greasiness.
Thats good though, because greasy hair grows better than thirsty dry hair, which is why coarse hair tends to break easier / harder to retain length.
Stay greasy my fine-haired sisters - its really just the aftermath of being able to easily keep long healthy hair 🥰

Her Mom never ever had her hair cut, and at night would have to lay on the bed and lay her hair out on the mattress and two of the girls would each with a hairbrush, comb the hair walking down the bed as they brushed. My Mom said that her mom's hair went well past the ground, and she remembers she still had the baby curls at the very end, as she got older though it got more brittle and damaged and ended up just past her waist. If you saw my grandmother though you'd never know she had this long hair, she kept it in a tight bun on top of her head.

Nope. It totally depends on your hair and scalp issues and needs. Someone who has dermatitis or eczema or psoriasis or other issues needs to wash their hair everyday and usually with a medicated shampoo. If you have super dry hair and it's better for your scalp to wash infrequently that's great but there's no such thing as one brand of hair care for all. We really need to get over this one-size-fits everyone for every single aspect of our lives. It's super annoying and incorrect.

You MUST BRUSH REGULARLY, at least the scalp to control dandruff and keep pores and follicles clear and to stimulate blood circulation. My hair was down to my thighs (BLEACHED platinum blonde too) until I recently cut it because of the weight, it was making my scalp sensitive and gave me headaches/neck pain. I only use heat tools on special occasions, avoid heat at all costs. Only trim it 1 inch per 6th months, or 2 inches per year. Bleach my regrowth roots every 2-6 months. I agree that we do many harmful things to ourselves ignorantly, but just bc something is historic doesn’t make it superior. When you know better, you do better, and many things have improved. I encourage people to research the past, get to the root of what worked and if it works for you today and is better for you and/or the environment, awesome. @@hiheidi9987 Not sure how else to explain it, but your hair and scalp will eventually get used to once weekly washings. Maybe even only 2x month. As long as you brush frequently, I find my hair is much healthier without the water and shampoo stripping your natural oils out all the time. It does not smell or look greasy. It may take a bit for it to learn it doesn't need to make extra oils, but after that it looks great!

My mom is 88. She told me that blondes rinsed their hair with lemon juice and brunettes rinsed their hair with vinegar. There was shampoo already invented in the 1930s/40s when my mom was a girl. And most women went to the hair salon once a week and got their hair washed and set in rollers/pin curls. My issue was in the mid-late 70s there wasn’t a whole lot of conditioner available. It was called “cream rinse” and it wasn’t very moisturizing at all. I had curly/frizzy hair that my hairstylists had no idea what to do with. They would tell they wouldn’t know what to do if they had as much hair as I do. My mom finally set my hair in enormous rollers and I sat under a hairdryer for 2 hours a night. That made my hair smooth and slightly wavy.

The biggest historical difference is the smells/odors. We no longer have to keep a handkerchief of perfume to cover our noses with. We also no longer powder our hair. We also generally have cleaner water to wash with, not just boiled water from a pump or a well. We also have less superstitions about cutting and washing hair today. We also have hot/deep oil treatments for hair these days. We also have conditioner. We also have less disease running rampant because people wash more frequently now.
I don't understand the latest trend about not washing hair often, but my nose wishes people would start using shampoo again!
People complain about pollution in the air...and then don't want to wash that dust, grit, and odors that hair picks up. 🙄
