      We have done protective style in the black community for centuries. Braids, wigs, twist, feedins, etc. The key with textured hair is moisture, dry hair breaks, no grease or oil will make your hair grow any faster. Also invest in a quality shampoo/conditioner/leave in, and trim as needed. Also limit heat. Remember straight fabrics of hair the oils slide down, with kinks and coils it does not.

    I am 62 years old. My hair is about an inch below the back of my knees. I have had long hair all my life as far back as I can remember. Last short hairdo, I was 5 years old and my mother gave me a pixie cut and I hated it. I trim it once a year and take off a half inch. I treat my hair like each strand is a goddess and deserves special, gentle treatment. I shower daily, however I shampoo my hair 3 times a week, never more than that so it doesn't get too stripped of natural oils hair needs. I will not use commercial brand name hair products on my hair. I'm old school and use old school methods I learned when my great grandmother was alive. I am so blessed she lived to 107. I learned so much from her and passed that knowledge down to my kids and grandkids. I've decided the only way I am going to cut my hair (short - shoulder length) now, will be the day I can no longer care for my hair myself. Until then - I still have (at the least) another decade (10 years) left or longer, of these extra long reddish brown locks first. And amazingly, very little grey hair on my head and I haven't colored it since I was in my 30's, half a lifetime ago.

    Important factors that have influenced hair care: historically, hair was washed more rarely, and with softer water (rain water or water from a well). Nowadays, we have much harder water with additions (chlorine etc). In order to avoid soap scum build-up, we use modern detergents which strip much more oil from the scalp and hair than the soaps used historically.
    Also, we use hot water and work up a lather etc, influenced by hair "care" commercials.
    By washing it less - with cooler water - gentle detergents or diluted detergents or soap - by filtering water so it's softer - and by adding oils, we can grow our hair much longer. I've tried it and it works.

    • @StellaWaldvogel
      @StellaWaldvogel 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Hair was washed more rarely because the shampoos stripped away the oil. I remember Prell, it was like Dawn dish soap! And you could get detangling creme rinses, but no conditioner. So people only washed their hair about once a week.

    Fact. As a teenager I desperately wanted hip length hair, but could never quite get to waist length. Later, when my kids were little, I started wearing my hair in a single plait in the back for practical reasons and it shot down to mid-thigh! I finally cut it into a late 30's-early 40's long bob because people always wanted to touch it. Strangers would walk up behind me and PUT THEIR HANDS ON MY HAIR. I'd spin around ready to fight for my life and it was just some idiot complimenting my hair. So I don't wear it like that any more. But protective hairstyles do work, they do what products don't.

    • @hvnterly8388
      @hvnterly8388 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Same. I have thin hair that looks okay grown out, but even when it’s shoulder length, it’s not terribly thick. I’m thinking of doing a half/half hair care style, where I do the protective styles as much as I can, but also keep my hair short/medium length. Even when my hair is just to the ends of my shoulder blades, I start getting frequent headaches and neck pain, regardless if it’s been up, down, or braided 😢

    • @Gomba13
      @Gomba13 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      What do you get headaches from? If you do a proper updo, it shouldn't hurt. A proper updo doesn't pull hair taut, pulling hair taut leads to breakage and damage to hair follicles on top of being uncomfortable. I use updos all the time to compensate for fine hair which is more prone to damage by virtue of being fine, but I don't have any discomfort because I always have a mind to not stress my hair or scalp. An example is using elastic bands with hooks at the ends instead of classic elastics, not brushing hair when it is wet, and avoiding any tension when styling. The only discomfort à ever experience is getting an itch under an updo, which is challenging to scratch without messing up your hair.

      @@BryannaGordin99 I get migraines really easy as well and they definitely are made worse when I put my hair in certain types of updo. I think the issue with the bun is that the weight and tension is all in one place. I prefer to make several braids and do a crown style (like what she wears in this video) because that evenly distributes the weight all the way around my head, stays in place better throughout the day, and since I also wear a head covering for religious reasons it keeps my covering in place better (I realize that’s not a factor for a lot of people, but I thought I’d mention it). It actually is less prone to giving me a migraine that just wearing a regular braid or even loose.

The one important thing i have done that now, a bit late in the piece, i regret, is constantly wearing ponytails. Traction alopecia is real folks, and my hairline has paid the price. I once read that a woman going out in public with her hair down was like going out in her underwear! That is hard for us women to get these days but, if you notice most of the photos of these women were done inside a house or studio setting. In fact, it was such a "very personal thing" that even prostitutes weren't usually photographed with there hair down The idea of you taking your hair down was kind of something that a woman did in a bedroom situation and probably just for her husband's eyes only. Also I have found that an updo is actually way faster to get done than a short hairstyle, that requires a lot of curling or blowing dry and shaping. Morgan Donner has a video called "I stopped wearing hair elastics for a year" in which she shows some hairstyles with a string of yarn/strip of fabric and those seemed quite gentle to the hair (also no bobby pins involved). Maybe something like this could work?

    My hair comes down to my mid-thigh and I think you did a great job explaining this topic. I rarely wash my hair and keep it up in a supercoil (like DNA) most of the time. I have gone weeks without taking my hair out of the bun when I've been ill, and it stays. I figure nature already figured out one of the best ways of keeping a long strand from breaking.

    I knew my great grandma. She said they went to the pharmacy and got a chemical powder that was then brushed through their hair. The dirt and oil stuck to the power, and when they brushed it the dirt and oil out with it. She was born in 1885 and moved from one end of Missouri to the other in a covered wagon, and she and her brother had to dig the family well when they moved because they were the smallest and fit in there better as it got deeper.
    She never said what chemicals were in the powder. The modern dry shampoo stuff just gums up my hair at the roots, so I doubt it’s the same contents.

I've definitely had problems in the past where I pulled it too much on the front of my hairline and it's either broken the hairs off because I was pulling it back while it was wet or overly damp or just putting too much tension on it and ending up with thinning. Super important and I loved having the examples in pictures of how to both add visual interest as well as protect that hair.

    For everyone struggling with headaches when wearing a bun or it not holding well and the hair falling out by the end out the day: try u-shaped hair sticks! I just do a bun on top of my head and then stick the hair stick through and it holds so well. I have quite slippery and straight hair so all hair accessories usually fall of my hair and don't hold. But this hairstyle made my hair grow really long with no split ends and it even looks cute. Never had a headache either.

    My husband has hair longer than I do! He wore his up in a bun literally day and night. There would be times he'd take it down, and I was shocked at how long it was, partially because it was growing so fast and partially because he always had it up so I wasn't watching it grow. Mine is currently too short for a bun (I chopped it as short as I felt comfortable with to get rid of some dye damage), so I wear it in a clip instead until it grows back out some.

    Growing up I had thick wavy hair, and my mother (who had short thin hair) would brush it from scalp to ends as soon as I left the tub, blow-dry and flat-iron, and then wonder why it was frizzy and broken so soon, then trim it. I remember being asked if I brushed my hair, four seconds after having brushed it, and brushing it again only for it to be even frizzier. For the longest time, I thought my hair grew 1 inch a year because of all the trimming that had to be done to my poor fried ends. Now I let it air dry and de-tangle from ends to scalp, then comb from scalp to ends. My hair is so much longer now, but I feel like my mom ended up pulling so much out that it's never going to be as thick as it might be.

    Thank you Katherine for explaining what makes a hair style really protective. My hair is so fine, I've always worn it either in a bun or in a braid, otherwise it tangles horribly, but I had never realized that braids are not a protective hair style. That makes so much sense! I'm looking forward to the demonstration of several protective hair styles, and I hope you will show at least one that can be worn with either a hat or a riding helmet. I'm often out in the sun during the summer, and am very careful about exposing my skin to the UV rays, but that's when I would always wear a single braid down my back. So if you can come up with an alternative style for those circumstances, I'd be very very grateful!

      Hi Isabelle, if you have some hairlength already you can tape your braids instead of using elastics, and if you do two braids instead of one and bind them over your crown you can fit them inside a riding helmet without fearing that a bobby-pin dislodges and gets stuck into your skull in the event of a fall.
      Morgan Donner used to do that before she cut her hair off, so you might want to have a look at her videos on yt from a year ago.
      In my riding helmet there is also a lining I can adjust so I have more room above my head to put the hair through…I‘ve been putting my simple braid through there to stop it from catching on my security vest.

    @mjgobet5601 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    for length retention there is another HUGE factor. When you wear sweaters (especially in the winter months) Hair that is left down will get stuck in the sweater and your normal movement of your head will break off the ends and in fact pull complete strands out without you even noticing. Also if you work in an office and sit in a chair all day. . .your hair, if left down, will rub back and forth right where the chair back top is. That is a key length robber. So your suggestion of wearing your hair up is important. I am 65yo. I had butt length hair for the majority of my life and my hair is very thick in quantity but fine in texture and stick straight. When you reach menopause you lose hair and I lost ALOT. then I learned that cutting it to just below shoulder length and taking large doses of Biotin brought back my hair thickness. Your videos are very instructive and I hope your followers get the results they hope for.

    I’ve enjoyed all of your tips from this and your previous videos. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge! I had drastic hair thinning due to Covid and I caused worse damage by the type of styles I was using. Last May I had to cut my hair to chin length. I was devastated. I started using your hair care routine a few weeks ago, with some slight modifications due to budget restrictions, but I am already seeing changes in my hair. My hair is now collar bone length and is looking wonderful, but I’m really struggling with protective styles. I’m greatly anticipating your next video to, hopefully, help with hair around my length. Thanks again! ❤️

      I used to do two French braids with quite small Intervalls down to about half an inch to my neck, and then put the ends underneath the little openings from the opposite braids and fix them with two Bobby pins…it looked put together and kept all day…it‘s even neat to wear with a kerchief if you happen to work in the barn or somesuch

    I am so glad I came across your videos. Been growing hair long for years now. I've been doing the curly hair girl method and have been dealing with exactly what you said. Also having the alopecia from years of ponytails and messy buns. So looking forward to starting this new method. Thank you.

    I have been doing a protective style for years without even realizing it! I twist it up into a bun and sort of tie it into a knot with the ends tucked under, and I don't use anything to keep it up. I wear it like that every day because i don't really go anywhere and it grows like crazy. Now my issue is thinning, I've always had fine hair, but as I've gotten older, it has much reduced, which is bummer - long hair is no fun if it's all scraggly 😕

    I have a mix of tra tion alopecia, post partum and hair loss from covid. I've been enjoying all your hair videos. I recently chopped off 4.5 inches and my hair almost touches my shoulders

    Ahh this is very informative! Subscribed! I thought a simple braid was protective. I didn't realise it had to be pinned up and away from the body. I pulled out a hair pin as soon as I got to that part of the video haha.
    I have hair that doesn't grow past my shoulder blades and I've begun to change how I care for my hair. My dream is to have hip length hair that I can put in beautiful historical styles ❤❤ (I'm a huge Georgian, Victorian nut)

    I am going to start your new hair washing routine this weekend! I am very excited to try it as I have been washing with rice water and a very gentle shampoo and thats been great! My hair likes the natural washing rinses more than traditional shampoos. I have also been using historical hairstyles and its been so much better for my Scalp and head and hair its amazing! Thank you for this fabulous series about haircare! Keep it up this is amazing!

      So the one you've been using is great but you're going to try this new one?

      @@sl4983 yes. If your Scalp and hair get too used to something it can often stop working for you. Not always but it is recommended that you vary your routine. So every once in a while I change things ups. Its like if you eat the same thing all the time. Your body may have other needs that you are not fulfilling. There's such thing as too much of a good thing.

    My hair is very similar to yours...can't wait to see next video on how to do these protective styles. They would b perfect for me, as I would wear them more often than not. I need to wear up for work and generally wear down for special occasions only. Guilty of going from regular braid to ponytail to bun though, so, I'm really not protecting like I thought. Thank u!

    I’m definitely trying this. Not only for protection, but because I also like the style. I learned a lot in this video.
