Sony WH-1000XM4 Review (2021) | Still The Best ANC Headphones?

- Long-term review of the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones, to see if these noise cancelling headphones are still among the very best ANC cans in 2021. Don't waste money on Apple's Airpods Max, the XM4 'phones are impressive in almost every area, for £350 - although if your budget is tighter, the older 1000XM3 headphones are almost as great and much cheaper.
I didn't review the Sony WH 1000XM4 when they were first released, so now I'm making amends. As well as the excellent noise cancellation, the XM4 cans boast some of the best audio you'll have piped into your ears in 2021, including 360 support on services like Deezer.
The comfortable fit of the XM4's and incredible app support also make them an easy recommendation. But as I said, if the price is a bit steep for you, Sony's older XM3 headphones are still a great Bluetooth ANC pair. Well I used the XM4s on a flight to Chicago a couple of weeks ago and they were absolutely glorious. I didn't realize how good they were until I took the headphones off during the flight and the noise that assaulted me was incredible. I used them again on the flight back home and they were just the same - Wonderful. That was my experience with them.
Just bought my pair today, absolutely loving them. Sound quality and noise cancelling is amazing.
noise cancelling is pretty much overhyped, and thats all the XM4s are good at 😂
I compared them with friends to Sennheiser 550 II, Momentum 3 and a few wired ones.
Even the cheapest wired DJ headphones were easily SUPERIOR to the XM4, the Sennheiser BT ANC headphones were slightly better than cheap wired ones (over wire..), but wireless also pretty bad.
Wireless Audio easily still sucks, no matter how good the codecs/wireless protocols get, aslong there are tons of DSPs and useless ways like 2x converting the audio signal internally as with android out of the box... there is no reason at all to buy expensive BT headphones.
And yes, the XM4s are overpriced crap, only nice from the outside but cheapest components inside; especially the most necessary one... the drivers
I will get BT headphones as soon there are some with planar driver and affordable, no matter if the battery runtime is half or less compared to the typical, dynamic driver stuff 99,9% of the people use
Try calling someone from them... That pop the new product bubble pretty quick
VITEX dont even know them, but i have an aversion against JBL products since i had 2 car radios broke and a few other problems with jbl products.
But when it comes to price JBL is at least competitive not like other brands you pay only premium for the name
@@harrison00xXx If you're looking for a one, Audeze Mobius is a great choice for BT headphone with planar driver. Compared to other headphones with planar drivers, this one's relatively affordable at $400. Still damn expensive but I'd say it's quite justified considering how most planar headphones go for $500+
@@shadowkillz9606 They are looking great, definately worth the higher price compared to the XM4s. But the XM4s are anyways easily beaten by 100$ headphones when it comes to sound... so no comparison at all.
Btw HiFiMAN HE 400i and similar ones are on the price range of 200-300$, but most of them are only wired.
I probably try one day the HiFiMAN headphones, if they are only slightly ok planar drivers they are for sure awesome. But im not sure yet how good the "cheap" planar models are, and im anyways more than happy with my high quality dynamic drivers in the AKGs. Somehow i think headphones which are not close to audiophile quality or "hi end" sound should not be allowed to cost more than about 150$. And for example AKG 702s sound already VERY GOOD, especially compared to my mobile and closed back stuff. So i dont see any sense in paying 400$+.
Thats btw the reason i "hate" the Sony XM4 (in and on ear....) so much, their very high price is uncomparable to the mediocre or better lets say AWFUL sound quality.

@@TechSpurt they don't sound that good ... there is no way this is the best sound u get 4 this price ... unless u change the equaliser settings.. but u can't do that always so they should sound good out of the box with default settings and they dont ....

@@cfa2510 I highly rate these. I tried other brands and did my research and found these to be really nice. The price is good and they give great sound. The noise cancelling feature on these are very good. I use mine every day and haven’t had any issues. Charging doesn’t take long at all and gives plenty of play time.

Do they sound good with and without ANC turned on? I've returned countless other noise cancelling headphones because the sound changes for the worst after switching thru a different mode, and i don't really like playing with EQ settings since I feel they should sound good right off the bat, just like my ATH-M50x's.

Hi! I have bought these for use on planes and holidays generally. Will they work with the plane equipment so I can listen to films and music without poor sound?
I just bought these and I realise now I have not been listening to music before this. Just amazing, literally before this I had not spent more than $30 on headphones.
I have a pair of Bose QC35II's which I prefer for movies, although they sound narrow and hollow, they have great 3d imaging and sound separation with a nice punchy bass and sharp hitting drums maintaining a low v shape for good movie immersion. I prefer my Sennheiser PXC550II for music since they have way more clarity and wider soundstage with a very neutral tuning and the app can really add alot of bass if you need it but they pale in comparison for movies. I'm really wondering where the Sony fits in here? Specifically for the 3d imaging and instrument separation regarding movie immersion?
I got them for £169 via Sony website and with a student discount. Was a no brainer at that price.
Are the ear Cup controls reliable in general? I just returned Beoplays because theirs weren't. Is the battery life really 30 hours?

There is a compatibility issue when using the XM4 with Samsung TVs. Occasionally, the audio will stutter and lags a couple of seconds from the video. Seems like it is a known problem since XM4 was launched. The new firmware 2.5.0 did not solve the issue. Sony support says that they are not able help with compatibility issues. Those who will be purchasing the XM4 to pair with Samsung TVs, please take note. Unfortunately, I just bought the XM4 last week with the sole purpose of using it with Netflix on my Samsung TV.
Hey Chris - what did you make of the call quality? I've got the WF-1000XM3's and they pump ambient noise to the person you're on the phone to, so they can't hear a thing I say...
The xm4 is worse. You get robotic noises, etc totally heartbroken these are so garbage

Thanks for this. I have a set coming this week for a cross country RV road trip with my family. Sounds like these will work a charm for blocking everyone out when I have to work on the road.
My headphones arrived, and they are great. To have the volume continuously increase or decrease, hold your finger flat when you slide it up or down to control the volume. It works very well.
Double tapping the middle works great for picking and hanging up calls along with playing and pausing music.

People say they can't hear me really good so I bought a wired mic I use with the xm4s when on phone
On a similar note, I can't wait for the XM4 earbuds. Rumors are they will release around July, I think. I hope they are water resistant.
I just purchased these headphones. They sound good so far. But you are right in relation to the touch control. I'm not getting the pause when I double tap, that I do when I use my Bose in NC700s. However the volume up and the forward and reverse or should I say forward track and previous track. Does seem to work.

Do these noise cancelling headphones block bass frequencies lower than 100hz?... like ones coming from a neighbors stereo or a passing car? No one ever talks about this.

The 1000X head band series is perfect companion for Xperia devices. And for the wired lovers, the 1AM2 is also worthy in 2021.

I have tried the Sony wh-1000xm4 in a store and the volume seems like 70% at the maximum, and not louder then I expect
Yeah it does seem low at first but once you get the anc dialed in they sound so good although yes I with they went a little louder. Make sure you use the app to find best sound setting
I got the Huawei freebuds studio absolutely love them, the noise cancelling is amazing, on sale with Amazon £150 quid

this is an honest & real comment from someone who just bought the wh mx10004 recently & had a chance to test out it noise cancelling abilities on a riverboat taxi in bangkok & was practically seated next to the boat engine with the engine blasting its noise full blast & was playing music & can hear the music clearly, what I can hear fromthe boat engine is low a low humming sound which i would say the actual sound is being reduced up to 90% & actually feels more of the vibration than sound wise.

@@habibhassan7770 the M5 headphones won't be expected till next year. There is a two year gap between when SONY updates their headphone and earbuds models. So you can wait for the M5s if you are prepared to wait till next year. But if you want to get a great pair of headphones now then there is no reason to not get the M4s

Heads-up folks, these have a creaky hinge (check the Sony Forums) and depending on ear size not too comfy. Also the sound is very electronic. NC is amazing though.

I had the Bose QC35's that developed a fault so I treated myself to the M4's. I do prefer the M4's they are fantastic. Like yourself swipe controls are hit and miss, Thought is was just me and my sausage fingers! Brilliant vid as always keep it up 👍

Did you buy it? I bought them blind online and i'm dissapointed in sound quality and wearing comfort. I will go and test Bose and Sennheiser and xm5's. I don't mind paying extra it's just the sound is just to flat muddy 🤷

Yes I bought them. At first I really regretted it I felt they were uncomfortable and wasn’t used to the sound quality compared to my previous song headphones. After 60hrs of use I love them and happy with my choice 👍🏻

The right earcup knee holder broke on me... They feel just uncomfortable on my ears touching against the cover layer.
Too warm after some time wearing them.
The headband touches just a part of my head so it feels uncomfortable as weight is not evenly distributed. ..
But I still use them cause sound is good
My only "but" is when I try to Bluetooth to my Samsung tv...sound choppy, "drivers" I guess....but if I pause the video for a few seconds, the problem is fixed for some reason.
I notice this because my previous headphones were the 700n and no choppy at all ....

Jokes aside, I have a pair of the black ones coming, and I'm excited. I've never experienced noise cancelling before, and it should be useful at my job when I'm stuck in a room full of noisy computers. I had a hard time picking between black and midnight blue. Ended up going with black since I feel it looks slightly sleeker and will match clothing better.

@@DoodleDoo I opened them. Mixed results. On their strongest noise cancelling setting (using the app) you cannot walk with them on because the music distorts. Not sure whether this is a fault or not. Top quality sound, though
