The arcade version has been ported to home consoles straight up twice: first, as a secret in Donkey Kong 64, and now on the Switch as part of the Arcade Archives series.
Lately, I've been dealing with my own health problems, but seeing this reminds me of a time when things were good in my life, and gives me hope that they can be once more.. thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I also got a Coleco Vision for Christmas one year and me and my brother played it all night. I remember being amazed how great it looked on our TV. Just a fond gaming/family memory I have. Glad you are feeling better and back at home. Another great video Patman. God bless you 🤗
This doc wouldn't be complete without mentioning that we figured out in the 80's how to play for free by hitting the coin box with your fist, each time putting a credit up. Then weeks later they put a silver bar across the coin box ;)
We didn't have that but I figured out if you hold held up the coin release mechanism you could use nickels Instead of quarters. This only worked in Mario brothers machines :-)
Great info, Pat. Donkey Kong is still my favorite Arcade game all of these years later. I've found out a lot about it over time but you uncovered a bunch of stuff I was unaware of. A very enjoyable watch and I'm quite looking forward to part 2.
Patman, thank you for this. Another favorite game from childhood. I first remember playing the Colecovision version of this on my Atari 2600. Good memories.
As a long time former Nintendo fan(loved their early works, current stuff, not so much), Donkey Kong is truly a top 10 arcade game, and it is till one of the most playable from that period of time. This was such a game changer for not only Nintendo, but the industry as a whole, this was a true arcade masterpiece and I don't say that lightly. So many amazing ports as well, some from the time period, while many are homebrews after the fact, but there are many great ways to play this title. Thanks again for a great video Patman(a two part one no less), as your history lessons are always some of my favorites.
I would say it's definitely top-five for me if not at the very top. After playing games for over 45 years it's hard to pick a favorite. There are a ton of conversions but as you mentioned some really cool homebrew as well. Thanks so much
I thoroughly enjoyed this history of Donkey Kong, especially since it's one of the earliest arcade memories I have as a kid in the 80s. Also, I'm just so glad to have you back making these great videos again after your most recent health scare. They never fail to make me feel good and reflect on a time gone by that was likely the best era of my life. Thanks again for what you do PatmanQC!
Thank you for a very in depth history of another video game classic. Your research is amazing and the hours you must put in is pure dedication and love for the subject matter.
I was a bit too young to ever see Donkey Kong at the arcades but I've played it so much on consoles at home, it's so simple and yet so fun! Thanks for the video Pat!
Thanks Patman! Donkey Kong was my first introduction to video games, I had a Game&Watch multiscreen game of it as a birthday present back in 1982. Gamer ever since... 😎 😊
15:33 well actually I never thought about that but now that I'm hearing them both one right after the other, yes it was definitely inspired by it. Great choice
ah man... that orange donkey kong game & watch brings back memories. that one and the green donkey kong jr. with the stand were bought by my friend's mother who was chinese and lived in taiwan and brought back to him in the states. he let me borrow them and i took them to school to "use as a clock" on my desk. the teacher actually let it stand that way and i played after i finished my work in the back of the class.
Donkey Kong for the Colecovision ftw! My uncle had a 2600 and that blocky butt was fugly! The one on Coleco looked amazing, even in black and white (Mom wouldn't allow it to be connected to the color TV. At least not initially). Great review as always!
I always thought i was misremembering childhood memories of mario shouting when he jumped and a hidden trampoline that help you go higher in the first stage, turns out we were playing the overseas version of Crazy Kong.
What I find fascinating about Nintendo's Arcade games like this, DKJR and Radar Scope is the sound. Over the years I've looked around seeing if there's an explanation as to how it works but can't find anything. It seems like the machine is playing back low-fi audio recordings which is a bit unusual in an era when most machines were playing back PSG sound. But every now and again I'll find old arcade games that also could do audio playback. At any rate, Donkey Kong is a classic and something I fire up every now and again as sort of a comfort food lol. 😇
The donkey Kong trilogy was the best thanks f9r the history I love your videos Merry Christmas and happy new year hope you get that game you always wantef

I remember as a kid where they had a donkey kong candy where you had little barrels or something that roll and you have to move the package left to right so the candy can roll down and you can grab it to eat it. Also I think k there was a game an watch game before or after donkey kong where mario was like a tamer and trying to make donkey kong do tricks and mario had a whip.

And they owned it, not rented it out or vendored it so when me and my brother had stay there as a kid, we sent a good amount of time feeding quarters into it and got reimbursed for it. Yep, the Nintendo Switch port was done by the Japanaese company Hamster; you can play the US or Japanese versions.
Yes but for the longest time they would never re-release the arcade version. I will talk about that more in the next video
It also came to the 3ds via the ambassador program.
