    This video is excellent. I realized the prominence of jazz in some of my favorite prog metal bands. It eluded me for months, the source of harmony in bands like the contortionist, and animals as leaders. I saw them play live together in San antonio and was immediately curious about the origins of the 7 string guitar. This lead me to george van eps and I then realized that I had heard his music on the local jazz station here in SA. Foolishly, I assumed there was a base player but it was just a 7 string (:

    Very interesting that you play jazz in 7 string drop A i came here thinking you were going to be playing 7 string B standard. I’ve played technical metal and exclusively 7 strings for years now and just started university majoring in jazz guitar and everything just uses the 6 strings for all the comping and such. I found you on Instagram and am super stoked on learning to incorporate my 7th string into my comping and not just using it in my solos for extended arpeggio tapping and such. Great stuff man !

      Hi Jack! I learned this from the late 7 string master jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli! The A 7th string tuning is from George Van Eps! Thanks!🎸 👍🏾 🎶 🔥

      Drop A is nice if you love baring across the neck for bass notes from whatever key you're in, Van Epps was a genius. There's a little local lady named Pauline who plays a 7 string on an eastman guitar, down by the San Antonio river walk 3 days out the week. came on my birthday and asked her to play her favorite song. I cried lol i only had one drink and she was holding my heart in her hand (she's gotta be maybe 50 y/o), my grifriend was looking at me with such curiosity 😂 i bought the band shots afterward, she plays with a trumbone/voclist and a drummer who mixes all manner of polyrythms into their transitions.

    A Wonderful Demonstration of the specifics that can be employed in jazz,
    when the seven string guitar with bass A string, is performed on!

    6:49 Lenny Breau used a High A (same as a Tenor Guitar), Stevie Vai used to have them on his 7 String but they tend to snap, so he went with a Low B.

      YES!

      @@ronjacksonmusic The very 1st 7 String Guitars that Ibanez built originally had a High A like a Tenor Guitar/Tenor Banjo but that string tends to snap cause it's rather thin & delicate, so a Low B like on the Baritone Guitar seemed more appropriate for that plus it takes advantage of the longer scale length on some models which really allows it to intonate better. How are those ECG24-7 Flatwound 7 String Strings going? You can also use D'addario 9.5 Gauge Roundwound 7 String Guitar Strings if you want to bring out the sound of the Guitar cause they're easier to handle.

      @RockStarOscarStern634 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The NYXL09564SB Roundwound Strings are under less tension so that might make it easier to do Vibrato. They're Super Light Plus Gauge Strings which have the Flexibility of 9s w/ the Fullness of 10s.

    Wrote a comment earlier regarding drop A vs B that was pro drop B..(.great vid btw) primarily because as a fingerstyle player it's easy to move the bassline a string over and I know the chords.
    However, I tried out some of the basslines in D A and can see potential 5th and 3rd being relocated. It's leaving me feeling like choosing 7th string note depending on key and music style. In C, I most definitely want my C to be right below my F. But with blues or C7, I may be happier dropping to A. Also considering the idea of 8 string with high A. Overkill maybe?
    I certainly agree that the extra string make this a new instrument, because you have way more breadth and range. So, lines can be longer and chords more expansive. While never sounding like a piano, it gives us more ability like the piano encompass a whole musical space comfortably with lots of variety. I now worry about taking up too much space.

      I'm glad that you like having the A string. Bucky Pizzarelli recommend that I use the low A string. It is the lowest in the industry! 🎸🎶😁🔥

    Was the low A how bucky played it? My teacher Jerry Sims plays it tuned like that too. I'm just not sure if I'm ready to jump over yet! But I guess it should really make the shell voicing chords a little easier right?

      @@ronjacksonmusic My 7 String Electric Guitar is an Ibanez which has a Low B String on the Bass side but I tune mine down a Half step so that it's easier for me to sing the high notes without pushing my vocal to where I'd hurt myself.

      Great vid and nice playing too. I have a pair of 7 strings: a dragonfly acoustic and a Jackson electric. I've tried A for the 7th briefly, but I really only felt happy in the key of A because the bonus g on the 6th string. I play fingerstyle and I find myself way happier with a B 7th string because all my bass runs stay the same, especially root/5 which disappears when I lose the B. I can very much see sticking a capo on the 1st fret for B flat.
