What McLaren’s hiding on its real 2024 F1 car

- We’d seen the livery, but now we’ve seen the real McLaren MCL38 - well, except for the parts of its 2024 F1 car that are being hidden.
Secrecy is nothing new in F1, especially in launch season, and McLaren is not alone in holding stuff back as we see things like dummy wings and floors and deceptive renders all the time.
But McLaren’s been particularly careful not to reveal some sensitive areas of the car in the images of the MCL38 it has shared, which we understand is mostly the real thing that ran in a shakedown at Silverstone on Wednesday.

The speed at which you produce videos of such high quality is astounding.
The fact that the launch car isn’t the actual that will race doesn’t stop fans from saying it looks fast or discussing it’s features. It’s always funny to hear people praising or criticizing the features when you can’t see many of the changes and some of those you can may be fake. Fans need to relax over the launches, they are mostly just livery reveals at this point. On track running is the only thing that matters and will reveal all.
I feel like it’s slightly different this year though as they’re allowed to do 200km testing outside of official testing. Maybe they have no choice but to show the majority of the new car parts to us.
Didn’t McLaren do this in 2022 with their floor edge and look how that turned out for them lol 🤣🤣

I remember when Mercedes launched their zero pod design. Fans were adamant it would wipe the floor with the entire field, based purely on how different it looked. I have to admit I was a bit worried too, it was so groundbreaking, but I have learned that you can't see how fast a car is until it actually runs on track. And I mean: during a Q session or race, not winter testing or FP1/2/3.
There is only one raw footage of wind tunnel testing, even the race can't find some secret wind tunnel shots

I dont think the Redbull uses a overbite, i think its just an extremely tall underbite, like the aston martin
From the images we have so far you can't see any cutout on the top of the sidepod as you would if it was an aston-style inlet (or to be more precise, RB19 style).
At the moment, it looks like they have an overbite but we have to wait for higher-quality images to confirm.

This has to be the year where McLaren-Mercedes makes a genuine step forward; new wind tunnel and new processes means they have no excuses not to be at least second best.

@@george1449 Well we'll see after testing where everyone stands but 2nd to 5th could be really close.
Their only excuse now is that the new major hires have only been working for about a month now. Rob Marshall and David Sanchez joined the team in January, so they aren't in full swing yet and had no impact on this car.
Next year there are absolutely no excuses.

I think its amazing that RedBull and McLaren followed the same route with changing the duckbill sidepod intake to a overbill from the previous underbill of the 2023 car ! But if McLaren believes they're gonna catch MAXattack Verstappen theyre crazy. They may catch Checo ,but Max ? NOPE !!!

Hope Mclaren build on their recent good work. I wish Williams could do the same but seeing as Both team's past successes were down to a certain Adrian Newey (now at RedBull ) it will always be an uphill struggle.
Williams can be better. McLaren can be better. If this year isn't a nail biter like 2021 was, then next year will be.
Im by no means an aerodynamic mastermind but i always thought an overbite side pod would be the way to go on these cars, using the front if the car to decrease the amount of air that enters at high speeds whilst remaining to cool well at low speeds we all know once you hit a certain speed the radiators hit there flow limit and the side pod cooling opening create drag, if you used the front wind to re direct more air away from the air intake at high speeds it should in theory create less drag
From their signing of piastri out of alpines hands they have shown that they are invested in everything they can do to be a winner again. They’ve invested in design aero and world class drivers the problem is the merc engine in these regs doesn’t have the horses. I expect mclaren to continue their commitment to winning championships again so whoever they partner with engine wise should be a clear sign of which constructor got it right.

Would it be allowable to do unlimited wind tunnel testing on, say, a 1/4 scale car? If so, would it be beneficial?
No, and probably not. The rules on wind tunnel testing don't specify the scale of the wind tunnel model, just the amount of hours available, and the smaller the scale of the model, the more inaccurate the results become.
Ideally, all wind tunnel work would be done on full size cars, but building a full size wind tunnel is scarily expensive, as is the cost of running one. Think NASA levels of expensive.

In other words, not showing actual cars in launch is nothing new in F1 generally, especially for a little while already.
All in all, each year, depending on the team, either shakedown or opening test day at the very latest is when everyone will get to see actual cars.
As for Mclaren, last year's pre-test shakedown attempt ultimately proved useless because not only didn't they artificially cover the floor edges in every single part where they were visible enough for any engineer or designer to analyze them, such as at the T8 exit, but also because they didn't make sure no third-party photographers would take images on trackside or elsewhere within track boundaries, which should be a simple task by hiring security staff or something for closed shakedowns.
Hopefully, they won't make the same mistakes again this year if they intend to upload similar videos in the first place, not that floor edges look extraordinary anyway, especially only a little before opening test day.
In this day and age hiding anything is pointless. Teams need 1hour on day 1 of pre season to have all the pictures they need
Which is in a week and if McLaren revealed it when they first revealed their livery it would be a month. A month or even a week later to react can give you a month or a week where you’re ahead of the competition which can matter in a championship.

I hope they know better, but this team has disappointed itself and others many times in that last decade. But I feel there's something different this time. If Piastri's rookie season is anything to go by, i have high hopes for him this season. I think he will get multiple race wins, and even get his first win before Norris. Not trying to be a fanboy or anything, but i just think Piastri is the next big deal, i can't help myself 😆
I hope you're right. But I'm not sure what it's based on. Lando destroyed Piastri on race pace and scored double the amount of points. Oscar would have have to take a massive step in order to beat him. I just can't see it happening considering how long he's been driving single seaters already.

Yet, he won one sprint race in his rookie season, Norris won none. No shade on Norris, which is a fantastic driver. But i think Piastri is someone we should really look closely at this season, because if he is a as good as he seems to be, he will learn really quickly, and i expect some seriously aggressive and calculated driving from him.

@@russtaylor385 Yes exactly. I started watching F1 back in 1988 when Senna and Prost were battling it out, what a season to start watching this sport, it got me hooked pretty fast. And also at the same time the first F1 games started releasing on Commodore 64 and Amiga and such, great times.

Are you serious? I am a mclaren fan, but there is no way this car will be competing with RB this year. It will probably be the 3rd or 4th best car, but not higher than 3rd. Most likely Mercedes will have the 2nd best car with the improvements they made.

“Even red bull should fear” why would Red Bull fear a team that has narrowed the gap by copying RB’s design? In order to surpass RB they would have to come up with their own genius ideas, which they are not. McLaren and any other team copying will always be a step behind
They forget that RedBull was at least 4tenths ahead and assume RedBull has been standing still. A team that has a well known record of car development even when they had a weaker engine
I believe that’s the reason why Ferrari and Mercedes tried to diverge a bit from a RB copy, it’s not in theyr spirit

Mclaren was a car to be feared in the later half of last season.
Ideal team composition is to move piastri to redbul as rookie and perez to mclaren as the lead, and then see how perez, not obstructed by a car engineered around verstapen, give results in a competitive vehicle.

Sponsors and fans I doubt would not begrudge their team for keeping them waiting if it means the car is more ready for open season day testing.
Automotive F1 race journalists would be better off not wasting their time either with bullsh*t general guessing that a fan can equally speculate about by looking at the same rendering and sound just as credible doing it. It belittles the race journalists.
As for the teams not showing the real deal before official testing begins I don’t blame them one bit. This is top secret stuff and no potential advantage should be publicly shared until the last possible moment. Big ass money is on the line here getting ready to race.
