Brilliant ty. I have just moved in to a house and Nest was installed. I was absolutely lost on how to set it and NEST helpline was hopeless.Very grateful for your tutorial
This has been a super video. I have been pulling my hair out all week as our nest has been automatically turning on for hours on end through the night. I am hoping now I have just watched your video that tonight it stays on its scheduled times, instead of waking us up at stupid O'clock! Thanks again
Thank you so much. My Nest was set up all over the place with the installer leaving no instructions on how to change the settings or explanation. This video was so clear it was unbelievable. Once agin many thanks
You need to remember to turn the auto learning off if you want a simple on and off schedule other wise the thermostat may override your schedule based on what it thinks you need.
thanks for posting this. we've set the whole week schedule on the phone app as you've demonstrated but its not activating at all on the times set. so we're still having to do it manually - grateful if you could tell us any steps we may have missed? thanks
As long as the app is 'talking' to the Nest, i.e. it is connected to it, then the schedule should activate if it's showing in the app. Does the Nest adjust when you adjust it manually on the app? Is the room cold enough for the Nest to react?
Thanks - thought mine was broken. I thought the command of temp at a time meant exactly that - not that it would stay that temp indefinitely! First bit of info I found that has explained this!
Thanks. Its confirmed what I thought and the system is very complicated. I tend to stick to leaving it off and switching it on using my mobile phone when needed.
Been trying to figure this out since Xmas, the whole schedule thing, wasn’t sure whether the heating stays on for a certain time then goes off on its own or not, but now I know to set a high temp to turn it on, then set it lower a hour or so after to ‘turn it off’, thanks a lot for the easy to understand video.
Hi again Charlie, praised you the other week for your great video as I've just had installed Nest 3rd generation thermostat, but I'm getting a bit confused, I want to put the heating on for 30mins or an hour how do I do it as it tells me how long it will take, and to save energy do I set the room temp lower so then I don't have to put the dial higher to come on🤯 I'm just wondering an still learning.....
You can only set the schedule for a minimum of 1 hour, not 30min intervals. To set a schedule for an hour at a time, follow the video. What you have to do is set the temperature for one hour at say 21deg and then an hour later, set it for 15deg (effectively turning it off). Does that make sense?
This is a great video, calm and clear and very informative. Thank you ! I note that Nest maintains a minimum heat setting which the fitter has set at 4.5c. Does that imply that I should not switch the central heating off at all in the winter months?
This was the best help thank you. My heating went off at 22.30 last night as the schedule. I set the radiance to 1hr, so not sure if the heating came on at 5.30am but I set it for 6.30am on the schedule? Heating went off at 8.30am but now it's turned back on. Is that because the temperature in the house has gone below 17 degrees?
I understand that turning the nest to just below what the ambient room temperature would be without the heating switched on would deactivate it, but is there a specific need to set it to this temperature? Is it not a safer bet to just set the nest to the lowest possible temperature in order to get it to cut off when you want the heating off? For example; I am leaving for work tomorrow morning at 0400, so I set the nest schedule (after learning how from this video) to activate at 0300 (21 degrees) and go to 9 degrees at 0400 which is when I leave. My alarm is set for 0330 so the house should be moderately warm by the time I wake up. Was just wondering if there was a specific reason you set it 17 degrees instead of much lower to turn off the heating.
Yes, what you said would work, and would ensure that it didn't come on. The reason I do it to 17deg is because my house doesn't drop below that easily....and if it does then I'm happy for it to come on, just to make sure the house isn't too cold.
I don't but I can attempt to explain it. You can set the Eco temperature to anything you want and when your Nest detects no one is home, it will set the thermostat to that temperature, so the house isn't being heated while you're not there.
@@charlieshooter thank you. I think I've turned the auto-sense off though in an attempt to stop it changing the temperature on it's own. Ours is situated where it doesnt get 'walked by' so it kept turning itself down 🤦🏼♀️ ive just learnt that it has sensors built in haha
The temperature you set is the target temperature for the nest go get to so if you have 21c at 6.30am, heating will come on early enough to hit the target temp at 6.30am. Is this correct?
Thanks Charlie, I've followed your instructions. its set for 0600hrs until 0730hrs.Will it come on before 0600 to achieve the set temp I've put in. I don't want it to be at that temp at 0600hrs. thanks, Ian Mac
@@kamranmajid786 I don't think it should come on many hours before. It would depend how long it has learned that it takes to warm the room to that temperature. Maybe set it for a bit later?
This was so helpful, thank you bunches! I have one question - once youve set the schedule, can you keep the heating set to "off" or does it need to be set to "on" constantly to do its thing?
@@charlieshooter thank you so much for your reply. I was totally lost about this with no manual etc and the online support via Nest is not great 😅 I appreciate it very much.
Ours does too, the room is obviously getting down to that temperature as it's getting a bit cold now. You just need to set it a bit lower for the nights if you definitely don't want it on.
Is there a 'boost' function? Say your normal set temp was 21 till 22.00, but the odd time you want it to maintain that temp for another hour before dropping back down to the 'off' temp, can it be done without going into the schedule?
There's not a 'boost' feature as such in the fact that it will not automatically turn itself down after an hour, but you can adjust the temperature at any time outside of the schedule and it will go back to normal at the next schedule point. I suppose what you could do is set the schedule to, say, 17deg at 22.00, then another at 17deg at 23.00 and another at 17deg at 0.00. What you ensure there is that no matter what you 'boost' the temperature to, on the next hour, it will go back to 17deg. Does that make sense?
I think that's the case....they have focussed on it being a 'learning thermostat', so it learns your preferences. There's always a way around it though! 😉
You can turn it off completely for the Summer for example.....but as for on/off automatically, no. It is more high/low temperature with 'low' being off!
I set a schedule on my recently installed nest for heating to come on 17.30 when I return from work. However, I looked at the phone app by chance at around 16.00 and could see that the heating had already come on and was heating an empty house. This seems to defeat the whole purpose of setting a schedule. Is there any way to prevent this?
I have just moved into a house with a Nest and it is driving me bonkers. I have set a schedule but it is coming on almost 2 hours earlier and I presume this is to get the house to that temperature….. think I need to find out about the True radiant…
Thank you for the videos Charlie! I've set the schedule but can't get it right. Say I've set it to come on at 6.30am it seems to come on earlier, I guess to be at temp for 6.30am. Is there a way to get it to come on at the time you've set rather than heat up to that temp by that time? Thanks so much,
There is a setting called "true radiant". Set that to off. That should mean it comes on at the time set, instead of getting it to that temperature by that time.
Hi mate and thank you for your videos on the Nest thermostat. Mine will be going in tomorrow when our new boiler is installed. I’m wondering if there is an easy to set a schedule that repeats on a 3 week cycle to suit my Mrs shift pattern? My hours are more normal so to speak and as with most couples I imagine, we have different heating requirements. My concern with the smart / learning function is that initially it may leave her cold when she gets up at 4:20 am for early turns, at least until it has done whatever learning it is capable of. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks S
Unfortunately you can only set it to a weekly schedule, so you would have to allow for that every week I suppose? You can set it to 'learn' at the start and if it isn't quite right, you can always tweak it yourself.
Thank you Charlie. Great video. I've got a question - if we have a schedule set for nearly every hour, e.g for 23C on Monday 4pm til 8pm, so a new one for 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Will it cancel each other out? Finding it difficult to work ours and the heating isn't coming on when it say it will. New to the property and the Nest. Don't have access to the app as it's a rented property
Thanks. Each time you make a new setting at a new time, it will replace the last setting made, but you don't need to do one every hour if it's the same temperature.
@@charlieshooter thank you for getting back to me. We've literally had no heating since 5pm today and I don't know why. Only thing I can think of is I have several (one every hour ish) set at the same time so it must be knocking it off or something
Thanks for the videos. Sorry but this will be a bit long-winded. I have recently has a 3rd gen nest thermostat installed controlling a combi-boiler for heating and hot water. I have auto scheduler on. It is not connected to the Internet. It has supposedly been learning for 95 days now bit doesn’t automatically set the temperature up and down as per our preferences - we have been turning temp up and down at the same time everyday expecting it to then learn and do this itself. I noticed that every day at 18:15 it would set the temp to 10 degrees. I found that it had one schedule set which explained this. I removed this setting on the schedule thinking it would remove all future settings for this temp and time - but no, it seems I have to remove each one manually. I reset the auto schedule but it did not remove the setting for 10 degrees at 18:15. My questions are 1: why does the thermostat appear not to be learning? It has had 95 days in which to learn. And 2: surely I can set up an auto schedule for heating in the morning and evening for the foreseeable future and not have to do each day individually! Even if connected to the Internet it seems from your video that you still have to put all future settings in manually, albeit with copy and paste! Any insight into what is going on would be a great help. Thanks for a clear and concise video.
Thanks for leaving the comment, and hopefully the videos have been going some way to helping you out. I would imagine the Nest would need to be connected to the internet to learn properly. It takes account of other things when learning, including the outside temperature, so I'm sure it would need to be connected! The auto scheduler, if left for a week or so, should set a full week schedule. If you want to alter thatbyou can, but you will need to do that for each day. Like you say, copying the one day and then pasting it to another would be easiest if you want every day to be the same. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
Hi Charlie! Thank you so much for the helpful videos. I’m a first time home owner and have inherited the Nest system and it is boggling my brain 🤣 this has probably been asked a million times before, but is it correct to think of the lower temperature you set it to as ‘off’ - I.e the system won’t be kicking on at all until it goes below the lower temp you set? I keep worrying that I’m constantly burning oil when the system isn’t just set to off!! I’m out from 8.30 to 5.30 every day so the schedule you’ve shown here is perfect for me if so. Thank you again!
You've got it exactly right. The idea being....if you set it low enough, the house won't drop to that colder temperature on its own, so the Nest won't kick in.....but if it does drop that low, chances are you'll want it to kick in anyway!!
Hi Charlie, great videos. I have a question that I can't find an answer for. Our new house came with Nest and everytime the hot water is on, so are the radiators. Quite frustrating. Is there a way of changing that? Thanks
That definitely shouldn't be the case. Something could be wrong in the settings, or something may be wired in incorrectly. I have never had ours set up for hot water as we only have a combi-boiler, no tank. If it's a brand new house I'd get them out to look at that!
The one thing you missed off was how to activate it, or does it just work automatically? Do you select Heat Off and then it just works on the schedule? I only installed mine last night and I'm still trying to figure it out. I set a schedule for the week and it seemed to work this morning but doesn't seem to have kicked in tonight.
Hi Charlie, just setting up my stat now. I cant seem to set a temp change less than one hour from the previous temp. Was hoping to give house a blast in the morning for 30mins or so but mine seems to allow a minimum one hours heating before a temperature change??
It seems simplistic. I'm going to play soon as the temp is dropping. It would be so much easier to be able to set times that you want the system to go off. So for example I set the temp to 21o at 7pm but I want the system to go off over night. I can't use the stay at home feature as I'm at home. I'd like to see an upgrade that just has on and off times.
If you think of "on" as a high temperature like 21deg and "off" as a low temperature like 15deg that will work as you want it. Your house shouldn't drop below 15deg on its own (unless you have a window or door open) so the Nest won't fire the boiler at that temperature...so efrectively is "off".
@@charlieshooter Thanks. I Guess I'm old school. We have only just moved from a mechanical timer. Whilst we didn't have huge control over this it was simple. The Thermostat controlled the heat and the timings were either on or off. The High Low's make sense. The advantage of this is you can program different days, I've never had that before.
@@charlieshooter Thanks. I've been monitoring the way it works and it seems to default to the off position over night. Maybe it knows. We are having some warm weather currently so I will keep an eye on how it functions using the scheduling.
Great video. I have 1 question. My heating system lets me turn on the upstairs heating with no downstairs turned on and visa versa. Can the nest thermostat control this feature or is it just a full house heating? Thanks.
Thanks. You would need 2 Nest Thermostats...one for upstairs and one for downstairs. The one on it's own wouldn't manage that because it could only detect the temperature in one place.
Hi there - first time with Nest and we thought we had set our schedule but it seems to come on almost 2 hours prior to the time set and we presume it has calculated how long it will take to get to the set temperature. How can I change this?
Brother, if you want the house warm at 17:30, you set it for 17:30 & it'll be at set temp by then. You don't need to set it for 30 minutes earlier, the tech knows how long it'll take to reach temperature and will self manage this for you.
If you've got 'True Radiant' turned on, it will come on before hand to warm it up ready for 6.30, but if you've got 'True Radiant' off then it will come on at 6.30.
If I set the schedule as above, then decided in the middle of the day that I was cold, could I 'boost' it for an hour? And would it then revert to the schedule?
You can turn the dial up on the Nest or in the app and it will stay at that temperature until the next schedule point. You can't 'boost' it for an hour with Nest.
Hi had the next 3rd gen in for a week. Heating set to come on at 6.45 am. However have noticed it's coming in a couple of times during the night. Do I just turn off true radient? Don't like a warm house when I'm sleeping
this series of videos is great. However, it would be good if beyond the copy function, i could just set up "do each day like this for the next X months" rather than clicking on each individual day and then copy for 300 days into the future.
Thanks for watching. The Nest only has a weekly schedule so you only need to copy and paste one day 6 times, and your week is scheduled. It will then repeat each week. Hope that helps. 👍🏼
Have just got nest 3 is it possible to set it like the old programmer so that it comes on for morning then turned off until evening setting, if co will app on phone turn it on if required. Many thanks it’s giving me a headache
Hello, I work from home now. I cannot understand why my nest (I’ve watched all your videos) just doesn’t keep my house warm in the day. User error or boiler/install error?! Please help. What should it be set on to make sure house stays at 20/21 all day? Thank you. 🥶
I'm wondering whether it is in the best position maybe? It could be in a warm place,.so once that's warm it will turn off and won't warm the rest of the house. You could try moving it to a colder part of the house, or if that's not possible just turn the thermostat to a temperature you do feel warm at. There's no "right" temperature as we all feel the cold differently.
all looks good apart from one thing. i can add but only allow me to put in at a time slot, but cant use "touch screen" when trying to alter the temps on a daily basis ?
The Nest won't overrule it unless you adjust it yourself in between scheduled times (that's how it learns) or are away from the property a lot. If you find it's an issue, yes you can turn the auto-schedule off though.
Our heating comes on at seemingly random times - the schedule has been set so it should only be coming on in the evenings. Ive reduced the safety temp to 4.5C and the Eco Temp to 7C as thought maybe they were influencing it. Any ideas as to what the issue might be?
Double check the eco temperature, and that it hasn't created an auto schedule that doesn't work for you. Failing that try a reset. I've not had the problem myself.
The video shows this really. Set the Nest to come on at 72deg at 8am, then set another one for 9am at 62deg (or a temperature low enough that the room won't drop to that temperature on its own) Hope that makes sense.
hi - what is the second number on the dial related to? The one that doesn't seem to change? Is it related to the outside temp (if it is my outside temp is 19 but it shows 23 on the dial) . Currently set to 16c
@@MrT4sure It could be 23deg in there currently. Mine is showing 20deg and it is a particularly cold house usually and I've not had the heating on for months!
Hi ! Quick Q: if i set 18C at 1am and 18C at 3am. Does it mean nest will keep house at 18C from 1 to 3 or will warm the house to 18C at 1, then switch off and turn on again at 3 to reach 18C again ? Thx
If the Nest is not set for a lower temperature in between it will stay at 18deg. So if you set it for 18deg at 1am, it won't drop below that until you set it to. So if at 4am you set it to 16deg it will drop to that temperature then.
I've set it up as you showed mate but the boiler not coming on as per the schedule I've set. Is there anything in the options that should be switched on/off?
I’m thinking of changing my system, but at the moment I have a tank system, and the Hot Water has to be on Constant for my heating to work, just in case you have an older system like mine. I can either leave water on constant or set water schedule to go off to match the times I don’t need heating,, in the Summer it will make it easier as I won’t need heating so often so can schedule water to come on for a few hours each day. Hope you sorted it, if your still alive
My nest automatically kicks in if the temperature goes below 9 degrees , (I can't set it any lower) and this is usually at night/early morning when I'm in a warm bed and don't need it to come on. Is there a way of still keeping the programmed schedule, but doing away with the 9° automatic activation? Cheers!
Wow, I thought our house was cold! It's never dropped below 14deg on its own, without keeping a window or door wide open! If it's a problem though, you can turn off or lower the "safety temperature" function and it won't kick in if it drops.
@@charlieshooter Ha, ha! Brilliant Charlie. Thanks for the quick reply. Though I have to say 14° is high summer here on the the north east coast (Tyne & Wear). I tried what you advised, but the program Schedule won't let me go below 9°, ignoring the fact that I set the 'safety temperature' to 3.5°. My upstairs bedroom window is always open, though the thermostat is downstairs, and it seems that when it does come on in the night, it heats the radiators up red hot and not just ambiently warm. Thanks for your time.
@@mungomunro8579 Sorry I've got myself confused there. Yes, the minimum temperature you can set the schedule to is 9deg, but that's inside temperature. Does the room where your Nest is really drop that low overnight?
@@charlieshooter Once again Charlie, I'm grateful for your swift reply. I think I've been barking up the wrong tree. After a bit more study of its history, I notice the cheeky bugger had somehow learnt to switch itself on at 4am, which wasn't on the schedule. I turned off automatic learning, and it didn't happen last night. I'm sorry if I wasted your time, but I like your style. And no, the room where the thermostat is doesn't get that cold. I like cool fresh air when I sleep, central heating gives he a headache, (seriously!) and because of a faulty radiator valve, -when I turn it off it starts leaking; it was easier to not have Nest on at night than fix it. It's just convenient laziness. Thank you for your time. Take it easy!

My schedule is set at 2300 hrs for the temperature to go down to the minimum setting of 9 degrees as I do not want any heating on during the night. Unfortunately this is not happening and the temperature when I get up at 0400 hrs (due to being too hot in bed) is 20 degrees and the radiators are still on. I cannot understand why this is happening, appreciate any suggestions.
Few things to check. First check that auto schedule hasn't put in any schedules during the night. Then I'd check your eco and safety temperatures to check they're not above what you've set.
@@charlieshooter Many thanks for your reply, I have reset the schedule and switched off auto schedule, also set safety temperature and echo to lowest setting, even switched mode to "heat off" and the boiler is still heating the radiators. Thought I figured it out this morning at 0400 hrs when the dial showed "Preheating" Many thanks for your help, I will keep plugging away and see what happens
@@James99mcp If the temperature is set at say 6am, it will come on earlier than that so it is the correct temperature by 6am. Hence the pre-heating. Over time it works out how long it takes to get to a set temperature...if that is an hour, the radiators will come on an hour early. Another thing to check is any settings on the boiler itself that may cause it to come on.
@@charlieshooter Many thanks for your help and advice, everything turned down to minimum and heating mode set to off and boiler still won't switch off so considering my next move, disconnecting and throwing it in the bucket seems appealing.
Great video! I set out heat at night for 72 & I wake up in the night and it drops down to 66 before the heat turns on. Can you tell me how to fix it so the heat stays at 72?
The heat should stay at 72deg unless there's a setting in the middle of the night that is making it drop to 66deg. Have you checked there's not a scheduled point in the night doing this? If not is it going to Eco because it thinks you're away from the property maybe?
CharlieShooters KnowHow we tried turning off the Eco setting and changing the schedule. We also found out our heat exchanger has to be replaced so I’m hoping that will fix the problem. Thank you for your help!!
Set the temperature you want it to come on at. That will turn it on. Then set another temperature at a much lower level (like 14deg C) which will then turn it off. Obviously, make sure "Heat" is on.
Is the heating coming on at all....if you set the temperature manually? Is the room already at that temperature so it doesn't need to come on? Maybe try resetting the Nest if you know it's all connected right.
It sounds obvious, but "Heating" needs to be set to on.....and "Eco" needs to be off. If the room is already at the desired temperature it won't come on.
@@charlieshooter so hang on Charlie, if I've set it to a schedule, the heating needs to be on? And then the schedule functions will kick in? That's alot different to hive. You can actually leave the heating off and as per the schedule, hive will come on and off (if that's what you want). Nest does not seem intuitive in that sense.
@@charlieshooter so what's the lowest temp you can take on the schedule? I can only go as low as 9. Coming from the hive system it's abit different getting used to the schedule side but I'll have to get used to it I guess. I suppose normally in UK homes, it doesn't get cold as 9 degrees, even in winter so if it stays at 9, the boiler is not on so its effectively off anyway. Ive contacted nest though direct. Maybe if we all get in touch they'll change it 😂😂😂😂
Great info, if I schedule my nest to come on example Monday at 9am at 21 and then at 11am to drop to 17 if I don’t have a schedule set for Tuesday will the heating still come on if temp drops below 17 or does nest only work on day of schedule.
Thanks! If you left it at 17deg from 11am Mon, then yes, the heating would come on if the temperature drops below 17deg on Tues....until you set the next schedule point in fact.
Hey I made the schedule just like how you showed. My question is that within the times that I have scheduled ex. 9 am and 2pm will the the AC continuously run or will the thermostat cool the house to my desired temperature, shut off the AC and then turn it back on at 2 pm? Thanks!
I've not got A/C but if it's like the heating (which it should be!) then yes it will keep it at the temperature you've set it at 9am, by turning the A/C on and off when needed until 2pm when that temperature kicks in.
So i did this however the ac is constantly running unless I physically turn it off from the app myself. My previous thermostat would turn the ac compresser on, have it cool for a short period of time and turn off. With this it’s constantly running. Is that normal or should I be worried?
@@TheSeharKhokhar Like I've said, I've only ever set the Nest up with a heating system, but my understanding is that it should turn on/off as it cools. Maybe it's set too low? Anyone else able to help?
Thanks for the video, I though I understood, but I just tried to schedule the nest 3rd gen to come on for just one hour each day, but it ended up staying on for 6hrs each day. I set it up so at 8am it would try heat to 20deg and at 9am it would turn off as I set it at a low 9deg. Where am I going wrong. Thanks
It sounds like you have set it correctly. Check that the auto schedule hasn't added another set point in. Other than that I'm not sure what has happened there?
@@charlieshooterThanks for the fast reply. I think when I say turn on at 8am and try get to 20deg. The nest thinks I'm saying do what you have to do, but have the temperature of the room at 20deg for 8am. This is why it's turning on way too early.
@@charlieshooter is there no option to turn off the pre-warming at all ?, e.g. I just want it on for an hour or so at 3.45 am, again at 6.45 am then later in the afternoon/evening, generally though we like a coolish house especially at night, so basically with nest it would be on half the night to get ready for 3.45 am, I can’t see this being smart, in fact in our case it would use a lot more energy
I don't want to come across as stupid...... to late haha. How can i not just ask for 1 hour in morning 7.30 on 19/20 deg then go off and then 4pm on and off at 9? My nest is in dining room which leads to conservatory. Scan get coldish but want the heating off until set times... If If i set it to 18 then an hour later to 9deg will that make the heating go off until it drops below 9 then kick in ?
Effectively that is what you are doing if you follow the video. By setting it at 17deg the boiler will turn off (as long as the house doesn't fall to that temperature). If the house is a colder house, then you can set the thermostat right down to really make sure it doesn't come on. There is no way of turning it off as such via the schedule, but set it at a low enough temperature setting and it won't come on. Hope that helps!
@@charlieshooter Brill thanks for your help, i have changed it to 9 deg so will go off unless really cold. Would it be more cost effective to have a higher temp than 9 deg like you have 17 ?
@@anthonyjohnson7537 That is a question that is open to a lot of debate, but personally I prefer the house not to drop below 17deg because it gets really cold around here if it does! If we're away for a long time at least the heating will kick in to take the chill off.

Your heating would only come on if the temperature of the room dropped below 17deg, so, no the heating isn't always on. The thermostat (Nest in this case) tells the heating when to come on and off.
@@charlieshooter set to come on at 19.5 the temperature is about 14 in the morning so it’s definitely not that unfortunately everything else works just the schedule doesn’t ever come on when it’s set

@@charlieshooter as others have said, you have the definitive videos for the nest thermostat. Great job. Some things maybe not as intuitive as hive. And like you said, if the temp is set to 10 degrees, and if never gets that low, the boiler is not on so I'm not actually using any gas.
Glad you like the videos and you're finding them useful. Eco can be turned off in the app. Go to 'Eco Temperatures' and slide it right down until it shows 'off'.
@@charlieshooter but the green leaf icon still shows. Does it stay regardless? Also, even though I've switch off eco, on schedules, the lowest temp I can go to is 9 degrees which was what eco was set to. Now it's off, on schedule, it won't let me drop it to below 9... Confusion and frustration. Tbh I'd be more confused if it weren't for your vids
Brilliant ty. I have just moved in to a house and Nest was installed. I was absolutely lost on how to set it and NEST helpline was hopeless.Very grateful for your tutorial
Brilliant, that's what i like to read....glad it was useful.
This has been a super video. I have been pulling my hair out all week as our nest has been automatically turning on for hours on end through the night. I am hoping now I have just watched your video that tonight it stays on its scheduled times, instead of waking us up at stupid O'clock! Thanks again
Thanks for leaving a comment and I'm glad it helped you get a good night sleep! 😂

You need to remember to turn the auto learning off if you want a simple on and off schedule other wise the thermostat may override your schedule based on what it thinks you need.
That's a good tip! 👍🏼
How do you turn auto ofc
Auto schedule is the first option in the settings menu.
thanks for posting this. we've set the whole week schedule on the phone app as you've demonstrated but its not activating at all on the times set. so we're still having to do it manually - grateful if you could tell us any steps we may have missed? thanks
As long as the app is 'talking' to the Nest, i.e. it is connected to it, then the schedule should activate if it's showing in the app. Does the Nest adjust when you adjust it manually on the app? Is the room cold enough for the Nest to react?
Thank you, moved into a place with one and its driving me crazy cause I didn’t know about all the functions.
Glad the video helped you out. Thanks for watching!
Thanks - thought mine was broken. I thought the command of temp at a time meant exactly that - not that it would stay that temp indefinitely! First bit of info I found that has explained this!
Thanks. Glad it helped you out!
Thanks, for a simple explanation, very useful.
....and thanks for leaving a comment! 👍🏼
Thanks. Its confirmed what I thought and the system is very complicated. I tend to stick to leaving it off and switching it on using my mobile phone when needed.
It's not too bad once you get used to it, but whatever works for you.
I have bleedin been looking how to do thus for nearly a year! Thanks
Glad it helped you out!
Thanks so much, you should be paid by nest to give these clear instructions via customer support.
I wish! I often wonder if they know this video exists! 😂
Thanks for leaving a comment. Glad you found the video useful.
Thanks for the schedule illustration.
No problem! Hope it helped!
Thanks million for that explanation. I'm definitely interested in getting a Nest for my upcoming central heating installation.

@@charlieshooter Thank You! 😊
This is a great video, calm and clear and very informative. Thank you !
I note that Nest maintains a minimum heat setting which the fitter has set at 4.5c. Does that imply that I should not switch the central heating off at all in the winter months?
Basically, yes. We don't!
@@charlieshooter Many thanks Charlie, very helpful
This was the best help thank you. My heating went off at 22.30 last night as the schedule. I set the radiance to 1hr, so not sure if the heating came on at 5.30am but I set it for 6.30am on the schedule? Heating went off at 8.30am but now it's turned back on. Is that because the temperature in the house has gone below 17 degrees?
More than likely that's the reason.....it's a cold one in the UK today!
Well done, saved me an hour!!
Glad the video was some help 👍🏼
V helpful- thanks! Much better than the American videos!
That's great to hear thank you! 👍🏼
Thank you so much for your effort and time. !❤️
No problem....thanks for leaving a comment! 👍🏼
@@charlieshooter OK, great just wanted to make sure there wasn't any other reason, Thanks for the answer mate :-)

How does the schedule behave while changin from summertime to wintertime and vice versa?
If you mean when the clocks go back and forward, then it's fine as all time and date info is set via the internet. Hope that helps.
Thanks so much! I couldn't understand how to get to the "copy" function, and it seemed daft to have to do it manually for each day and week.

Glad it helped you out! 👍🏼
Thanks for your help, you made it easy!
Glad to hear it, pleased to help you out!!
Thank you so much! This has been bugging me for yonks! Do u have a video on what the Eco function does please?
Yes that is how it works as long as you have True Radiant turned on.
Thanks Charlie, I've followed your instructions. its set for 0600hrs until 0730hrs.Will it come on before 0600 to achieve the set temp I've put in. I don't want it to be at that temp at 0600hrs. thanks, Ian Mac
Yes it will do that. It will come on before 6am to ensure the room is at your set temperature at 6am. Maybe change it to 6.30am if that's the case?
My nest starts to "preheat" many hours before the 6am start time i set using your guide.
@@kamranmajid786 I don't think it should come on many hours before. It would depend how long it has learned that it takes to warm the room to that temperature. Maybe set it for a bit later?
@@charlieshooter hi again. Solved it by turning off True Radiant in the settings. The nest now only turns on during the hours specified.
That should help a few people out! 👍🏼
This was so helpful, thank you bunches! I have one question - once youve set the schedule, can you keep the heating set to "off" or does it need to be set to "on" constantly to do its thing?
(so to be a bit clearer, in bottom left of the app - MODE - do I set thermostat to Heat or Off, for the schedule to kick in and work properly?)
It needs to be set to Heat for the schedule to run properly. Off, turns the heating off entirely (so for Summer months etc). 👍🏼
@@charlieshooter thank you so much for your reply. I was totally lost about this with no manual etc and the online support via Nest is not great 😅 I appreciate it very much.
Hi, if you are setting a schedule, do you set the stat to off or heat via the Mode setting?
For a schedule to run it has to be set to Heat. 👍🏼
Thank you Charlie. The boiler is still activating in the night with a medium setting (15 degrees) am I missing something obvious?
@@charlieshooter Thanks, looks like they haven't made it easy, too focused on the 'AI' aspect of the product perhaps...
I think that's the case....they have focussed on it being a 'learning thermostat', so it learns your preferences. There's always a way around it though! 😉
Hi there - I think I understand this now; there is no turn off the heating button? Can you use the ECO setting with scheduler?
You can turn it off completely for the Summer for example.....but as for on/off automatically, no. It is more high/low temperature with 'low' being off!
I set a schedule on my recently installed nest for heating to come on 17.30 when I return from work. However, I looked at the phone app by chance at around 16.00 and could see that the heating had already come on and was heating an empty house. This seems to defeat the whole purpose of setting a schedule. Is there any way to prevent this?
The Nest is trying to heat the house READY for 17.30. Try turning True Radiant off.
@@charlieshooter Well, show us how to do that!!!!!
@@derekporter7651 Maybe it's a good idea for another video.
I have just moved into a house with a Nest and it is driving me bonkers. I have set a schedule but it is coming on almost 2 hours earlier and I presume this is to get the house to that temperature….. think I need to find out about the True radiant…
Yes, you are setting it to come on at that temperature at that time if you have True Radiant selected.
Thank you for the videos Charlie! I've set the schedule but can't get it right. Say I've set it to come on at 6.30am it seems to come on earlier, I guess to be at temp for 6.30am. Is there a way to get it to come on at the time you've set rather than heat up to that temp by that time? Thanks so much,
Good question. My heating keeps coming on during the night even if it is not timed to do so. How can this be avoided?
There is a setting called "true radiant". Set that to off. That should mean it comes on at the time set, instead of getting it to that temperature by that time.
I would say to set the thermostat down really low for the night time and then it shouldn't attempt to turn on.
Thanks
S
Unfortunately you can only set it to a weekly schedule, so you would have to allow for that every week I suppose? You can set it to 'learn' at the start and if it isn't quite right, you can always tweak it yourself.
CharlieShooters KnowHow thanks mate. Thought it might be a bit tricky.
Thank you so much, really useful video 👍
Thank you, glad it helped you out!

@@dalewoods2503 did you sort it out?
Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
if the nest thermostat and the app schedules are different, which one overrides the other?
They should sync straight away, so if you adjust it on one then it should change on the other.
Is it possible to set a maximum temperature so that family members are not able to set the temperature higher than say 22 degrees C?
If you go to settings and select "lock", you can set a temperature range it can only be adjusted within.
@@charlieshooter amazing! Thank you so much for your response. It’s easy when you know how haha…🤣🤣
@@charlieshooter thanks, I thought it's a bit unusual. I'll definitely have it checked out.
As long as you set it to "Heat" rather than "Off" then the schedule should just work.
@@charlieshooter Thanks. I'll give that a try
Hello, can you lock the nest itself so that no one can alter the heating when you are out? Thanks.
Yes, you can lock it and set a range that is allowed, and the temperature can only be adjusted between these set amounts.
Hi Charlie, just setting up my stat now. I cant seem to set a temp change less than one hour from the previous temp. Was hoping to give house a blast in the morning for 30mins or so but mine seems to allow a minimum one hours heating before a temperature change??
Unfortunately although you can choose 15min intervals, it does have to be at least an hour from the last/next one.
Yep it's pretty mild at the moment. 17deg outside in November is unheard of!! Think I'll leave mine off!
You can turn off True Radiant which should sort that out. 👍🏼
Brother, if you want the house warm at 17:30, you set it for 17:30 & it'll be at set temp by then.
You don't need to set it for 30 minutes earlier, the tech knows how long it'll take to reach temperature and will self manage this for you.
Correct! The time you set it at is the time the room will get to that temperature!
Well explained
Cheers, hope it helped!
If you set it for 21 at 6.30 does that mean it will come on before that to heat up to 21 for 6.30? Or will it start heating at 6.30
If you've got 'True Radiant' turned on, it will come on before hand to warm it up ready for 6.30, but if you've got 'True Radiant' off then it will come on at 6.30.
I just make sure the setting through the night is set low enough, that the heating doesn't trigger. Say about 15deg.
Is the process the same when your trying to set the schedule for Cooling?
I've not done it, but as I understand it, yes it should be the same.
this series of videos is great.
Thanks for this, I have a question! Do you have to leave it on the heat setting for the schedule to work?
Yes, it needs to be on 'heat' for the schedule to run.
Have just got nest 3 is it possible to set it like the old programmer so that it comes on for morning then turned off until evening setting, if co will app on phone turn it on if required. Many thanks it’s giving me a headache
Yes the video shows you how to do just that really. And yes the app can be used to turn it on manually.
How do you override your heating when you're on a schedule
Just turn the dial either way on the Nest or in the app.
Any idea how to set up 2nd user on another phone ie two users being able to connect with apps
Go into the Nest app, go to "settings", and then "family", click "add person" and follow the instructions from there. That should do it! 👍🏼
At the start of your video the stationary temperature is at 20, somehow mine is at 27 how do I change this back to 20? Tia
That's the actual temperature the room is so yours being 27deg is waaay too hot. Open a window maybe?
Brilliant! Thank you!
No probs! 👍🏼
Thank you so much!
Does it turn on at those times or preheat it for that time as it would take 2hrs in winter to reach that temp then it would turn off?
It actually preheats the room ready for those times, so it may be on for a little longer than the times shown.
@@charlieshooter thanks
But that means you hsve the heating on longer than expected surely costing more
Not necessarily, because once it is at the desired temperature, the boiler will stop heating.
all looks good apart from one thing. i can add but only allow me to put in at a time slot, but cant use "touch screen" when trying to alter the temps on a daily basis ?
Unfortunately you can't copy whole days on the Nest itself, you do need to use the Nest App for that function. I think that's what you mean.
One question; the nest will overrule all of this because it learns or can you shut that off?
The Nest won't overrule it unless you adjust it yourself in between scheduled times (that's how it learns) or are away from the property a lot.
If you find it's an issue, yes you can turn the auto-schedule off though.
@@charlieshooter thanks, that helped me a lot
Our heating comes on at seemingly random times - the schedule has been set so it should only be coming on in the evenings. Ive reduced the safety temp to 4.5C and the Eco Temp to 7C as thought maybe they were influencing it. Any ideas as to what the issue might be?
Mine is the same comes on a random times
Double check the eco temperature, and that it hasn't created an auto schedule that doesn't work for you. Failing that try a reset. I've not had the problem myself.
Nest Thermostat (3rd Gen): When scheduling, how do I have it be at 72 degrees from 8am to 9am, and off for the other 23 hours of each day?
The video shows this really. Set the Nest to come on at 72deg at 8am, then set another one for 9am at 62deg (or a temperature low enough that the room won't drop to that temperature on its own) Hope that makes sense.
hi - what is the second number on the dial related to? The one that doesn't seem to change? Is it related to the outside temp (if it is my outside temp is 19 but it shows 23 on the dial) . Currently set to 16c
The small number on the outside of the dial is what the actual room temperature is now.
As I thought - Bizarre as it still show 23 even now and the heating hasn’t been on for 2 days - do I assume it’s broken?
@@charlieshooter got it ! Thx a lot !
Sorry, for some reason I've only just seen these comments. Not sure how I missed it. I presume you got it sorted by now! 😉
@@mungomunro8579 No problem! Glad I could help where I could! You've got to keep an eye on that auto-schedule! 👍🏼
At last! Thank you
Hope it helped. Thanks for commenting!
Mine does not have a schedule button, any advice?
You should definitely have a schedule button in the app. Try restarting.
@@charlieshooter I found it, I have to turn the knob all the way to the left and it then shows a hidden selection. Yeeha. I was able to unprogram the previous tenants settings
how do you set the hot water ?
Sorry, I've not got mine set up for that. Anyone else?
The only time the heating stops is when the room temperature reaches the set temperature.
@@James99mcp Dare I suggest turning it off and back on?? 😉 Maybe a factory reset may work?
No problem, lets hope its fixed it!
How did I know set On or Off? I set 9:00 pm to 05 am next day but it’s not work the same I expect
Could you help me out
Thank you very much
Set the temperature you want it to come on at. That will turn it on. Then set another temperature at a much lower level (like 14deg C) which will then turn it off.
Obviously, make sure "Heat" is on.
Hi can you tell me how to set my phone up to use on nest
It's just a case of downloading the Nest app and logging in to your account. As i recall the initial setup was quite simple.
Hi bud I'm set a schedule but it's not coming on. Any suggestions or advice? Thanks
Is the heating coming on at all....if you set the temperature manually? Is the room already at that temperature so it doesn't need to come on? Maybe try resetting the Nest if you know it's all connected right.
Same issue as mine. Does it need to be on a specific mode setting e.g Eco mode?
@@ww-sd9pz Yes, that's how it works sorry. It will warm the room up to that temperature ready for 8am.
@@PlushBadger Try turning off 'True Radiant'. That should stop the pre-warming.
@@charlieshooter thank you reply and help.
@@charlieshooter Hi I have the same problem.. I set the turn off times to 9 (the lowest option) but it still often comes on during the night? Again It is near conservatory which obviously gets very cold. We run on oil so use more than necessary. Any suggestions? Thank you
I set my nest for 445 am to 615 but it actually came on at the start of the dot which was 330 and didn't turn off until the end of the second dot at 715 so my 1 hour 45 timer is now over three hours long how do I get it to turn on at 445 and turn off at 615 cos it will cost me more like that
If you turn off True Radiant, this will mean the system will only turn on at the scheduled time, rather than warm up ready for the scheduled time.
Thanks for the reply will try that
@@charlieshooter yes I want it to turn on the time I set not warm up for the time I set
Does anyone know how to set a hot water schedule please?
I don't sorry, I've not got that available with my boiler.
How can I just set it for hot water, with no heating schedule
I've not set it up for hot water but I get the impression it's relatively easy!
So your heating is always on? It is never off because its set at 17 degrees.
Your heating would only come on if the temperature of the room dropped below 17deg, so, no the heating isn't always on. The thermostat (Nest in this case) tells the heating when to come on and off.
When I set my schedule it doesn’t activate the heating .. everything else works but setting a schedule doesn’t bring it on
Is the room already hot enough maybe? Try setting it at a higher temperature maybe?
@@charlieshooter set to come on at 19.5 the temperature is about 14 in the morning so it’s definitely not that unfortunately everything else works just the schedule doesn’t ever come on when it’s set
That is strange, maybe try a full reset?
Fantastic video mate but for nest, that's a crap way to switch on and off schedules. Why not have a off function
Ha....looks like you’d already found the video after all! It’s not the way most people are used to thermostats working but I suppose it stops the house getting too cold!
@@charlieshooter how do I switch off the eco mode completely? I've marked to 0 on the settings on the app for eco but the green leaf still appears on the thermostat. There's already a frost free system built in at 4 degrees which I'm happy with. Checked Google, switch off eco on the app, meaning set it to 0 yet still get the leaf icon.
Why thay don’t just add a of option ?
