The majority of places however do have a reasonable articulable suspicion of a crime standard. Never assume that a cop is telling you the truth about anything. They're trained and encouraged to lie as a pretext to manipulate people and get information. There may or may not have been a call, and if there was we can't assume anybody said anything about a gun.
Ask questions,
Don't answer them.
"Is this a consensual encounter?"
"Am I being detained?"
Etc...
Better still. State you are invoking your 5th amendment right to remain silent and your 6th amendment right not to be questioned without an attorney present. Then don't talk.

He could have saved some time by asking 'do you have a reasonable and articulable suspicion that a crime has been or is being committed'? At that point they would have to answer no (EVEN IF HE DID, IN FACT, HAVE A GUN HE WAS OPEN CARRYING!), so then he can ask 'am I free to go' and they should answer yes, and if they dont say 'I invoke my 5th amendment right to remain silent' then go back to the previous step.

It’s so infuriating to hear police say - go and complain. It highlights the problem. Police get away with abusing rights so many times that they don’t care if you make a complaint because nothing is done to them. It’s like a criminal being judged by his fellow gang members. Nothing to worry about.
