  • Who is Rafael Leão? After a stunning 2021-22 campaign with AC Milan in which Rafael Leão was the Serie A MVP, things are finally picking up for the young man from Bairro da Jamaica, an impoverished neighbourhood near Lisbon, Portugal. After passing through the Sporting academy, flourishing in France and explosding for AC Milan, Rafael Leão looks to be the future for Portugal.

My friends, the quote from the title: "he WAS better than Ronaldo WAS back then." Past tense, as it was what his youth coach at the Sporting academy said as explained in the video. Nobody is trying to say he IS better than Ronaldo or will be better, that would be insane.

Leao can be an absolute monster when he is determinated to win, on the last derby between Milan and Inter where Inter scored first by a goal made by Brozovic and they mocked the Milan supporters by celebrating in front of them and Pioli as well, Leao took matters in his hands and scored 2 goals and 1 assist in the game.
So yeah, he can basically trigger his Super Portuguese mode if he is serious. The only thing he is lacking is that winner mentality that CR7 and Zlatan has, maybe he will develop it later on.

He is realy talented the only thing ive noticed when watching him (ac milan vs chelsea) both legs. After he has done a dribble or a run gets dispossesed he will walks back to his position or he'll stand offside for a min before walking back into position. Similar to a young hazard before it got drilled into him
Tldr: needs to be motivated to run back or up his workrate.

The problem with Leão is his work rate. If the ball comes to him he is going to be lethal but if it doesn't he will disappear from the game as he often does for long periods of time and that's unreliable. I remember specifically 2019's U-20 World Cup where Portugal massively underperformed (the generation of Diogo Costa, Dalot, Florentino, Jota, Trincão etc... that went out in the group stage) and I found him to be disinterested to be there. Unless he changes fundamentally, Leão will never be as good as Ronaldo. (At this point at least) He lacks the mentality, the drive and hunger for victory that Ronaldo has, which are at the core of Ronaldo's success.
If you analyze closely they are similar, they beat their opponents through sheer power, with their acceleration, speed and strength. Ronaldo was showy and probably less technically gifted than Leão, Leão seems a tad more pragmatic in his dribbling than Ronaldo but they mostly get by their opponents because of their physical prowess and so, what will truly differentiate the two, is their discipline, their focus and determination. And we can see almost every single game that Leão is miles and miles behind Ronaldo in that factor.

what i like the most about him is that he just loves playing football. he seems to play in san siro like he was playing in jamaica neighbourhood with his friends, there is no pressure for him. for him football is fun, is joy so he doesnt care about anything elses besides having fun in the pitch. thats not someting we can see on a lot of football players now a days. he has some street football magic with him.

Spain's goal comes from a Carvajal run forward and cross that Leao doesn't track.

Why should they continue to live in poverty when they also gave everything they had for the game?
I hope one day we all come together and say enough is enough.
European clubs shouldn't monopolize all the wealth of football, especially when they source their talent from poor places with little to no represention at the top of the game.

TBH overall Portugal does not look great this World Cup.

For 4 years at man u he was still finding his peak so try understand the context. Messi was better than Ronaldo at 19 age for age where he won his first Ballon d'Or
