As a Sporting supporter its strange to see a Benfica team with so much talent combined with decent veterans look so average. Portuguese teams lately have had too many issues in the board/backroom. Rivalry aside Portuguese teams need to step up and compete especially on a continental stage. Finances aren't helping anyone these days obviously but maybe its time for us to go back to the days of pushing the gritty academy players.

Gritty academy players won't make a difference if they're just being window-shopped and then sold after 12 months. The biggest issue in all of Portuguese futbol is talent retention. I think the league needs to come up with a way to curb the selling mentality of the Liga teams.

@@cdb5001 i agree if you look at Sportings sudden take over of first place after years of Benfica/Porto domination you can see that the squad is filled with young, hungry youth looking to prove their worth while Benfica and Porto field “superstars”. The issue in Portugal right now is money retention which is what is driving the sales of these promising players. Clubs have to realize that results bring financial success and a switch back to the youth format instead of viewing them as commodities can solve much of these issues at least domestically.

Amazingly accurate, fair and timely video.
Some very important things were left out, probably due to the duration of the video (eg. Mendes having 10% commission by default in academy players, LFV’s rigged associate number, LFV’s issues with justice, LFV’s aggression to a supporter in the club’s general assembly, lack of investment for the penta, 100M€ pre-election investment a month after statements of financial caution due to covid, lack of investment in other sports and a few more).
However, for me, the main missing piece is that the voting system used is developed and managed by the IT department of the club, which reports to DSO, LFV’s right arm (Sporting fan also with a rigged number). Furthermore, it was found out that, unlike what the club stated, the system has not been audited by the CNE since 2006!
I was there on election day, with 4-hour queues in the middle of a pandemic and a majority of supporters talking (and singing) about change. I have no doubt the election was forged.
I am sure time will put LFV in the right place. I just hope there is some Benfica left when that happens.
Great great work, congrats to everyone involved.

Although vilarinho began to send the club in the right direction it cant be forgotten that he refused to keep mourinho who was making the most of what he had, even had dani starting to perform, and let him go to bring in toni which lead us to our worse finish ever.

I'm a Porto supporter and the mismanagement of benfica can really destroy the club, I mean what purpose is there in having a great academy like Seixal if you sell every talented player that come from there before they get in the first team. But I think there are underlying problems in portuguese football, some caused by the polarization of football globally and others by mismanagement of the clubs. In 2011 Porto could literally stand up to any team in world football and now we are swimming in debt. Sporting has probably the best academy in Portugal and they are even worse. There are serious structural problems in portuguese football but every fan is too busy fighting each other to see that if we stand united we could make portuguese football one of the great leagues again, but maybe its just wishful thinking. Im just tired of seeing bad performances in Europe and unexciting title races at home.

His son has been running the club in the shadows, getting rid of Antero Henrique, who was then scooped up by PSG, and selling players and fudging numbers for their own profit. We need a new President and an overhaul of the finances.
As for Sporting, Varandas was crapped on by everyone, but he's done an excellent job with what he was given. Sporting are in debt, but they have been chipping away and with a first title in 20 years, and potential Champions League football, their debt could be wiped in 1-2 years.

I'm a FCP fan, but I really enjoyed the work put into this video. You remained unbiased, while still being a fan, which is damn near impossible for most people. However, I still laughed in 2 situations, first a minor one, when you put Danilo Pereira in the list of stars from Benfica's academy (sure, he might have started there, but he never did anything relevant, only in Marítimo and later in Porto. So if you include him there, you have to remove João Félix, because he also started in Porto's academy...); the second one was when you call LFV a brilliant businessman...he was brilliant in manipulating the corrupt world of rich people, having multiple businesses fail, file for bankruptcy, creating new ones in the name of his family members and, as the cherry on top of the cake, owing around 300 million euros to a bank that eventually also failed, was bankrupt and had to be saved by the government, making that debt "disappear" (aka paid by the common taxpayer...).
That being said, again, congratulations on the video.

One thing overlooked regarding the elections was the vote weight per member. Depending on how long you've been a member, your vote has more weight and the biggest value is after 25 years translating to 50 votes. Very normal in club elections, but the catch here is that after Luis Filipe Vieira rose to power, he altered slightly the rules and gave voting power to the Casas do Benfica, were each president of a Casa do Benfica would be able to vote for a total of 50 votes. There was no restriction to who could be a president of a Casa do Benfica and being a member you could vote as an individual and as a president. Luís Filipe Vieira inaugurated a lot of Casas do Benfica throughout Portugal and some foreign countries, ensuring that the presidents would vote for him.
So imagining that a president was also a +25 year member, he could give 100 votes to LFV... Those 62% win, in every age category is kinda fishy, but using this tactic of "controling" teh Casas do Benfica, he would always ensure he woul not be kicked of the presidency of Benfica

The problem is not just lack of investment (particularly this season!), is how we spend the money when we do decide to invest, and Vieira's antidemocratic practises.
Raul Jimenez was a successful transfer for the club, but we can't forget he was sold by Atletico for twice what they paid for him after he FLOPPED in Madrid. All the big €20M+ transfers are dodgy, from Pedrinho (I know many Brazilians, they all think he's not worth that kind of money), to Darwin (€25M for a guy from Almeria? He might be good but seriously?), to the Silvio and Pizzi Braga/Atletico/Benfica carrousel, to Raul de Tomas who stayed for less than 6 months. And what about the insane decision to renew Adel Taraabt's contract?!
Vieira claims there is no money for quality signings, but the chequebook is always open if the player is managed by Mendes or sold by a club in Mendes' orbit.
Given the insane amount of money spent and earned through Mendes, the ridiculous commissions generated, and the back-and-forth of players between clubs in his orbit, it is honestly hard to think that this is anything but an elaborate money laundering scheme. People like Mendes and Vieira are a cancer in modern football.
Vieira has taken downright autocratic measures to keep himself in power, including giving the Casas do Benfica overwhelming voting power, knowing most if not all of them are his loyal supporters; running BTV as a propaganda outlet; and setting the membership time requirements for candidates so high that he himself wouldn't have qualified when he first ran. That he refuses to even debate his rivals is to me absolutely cowardly and disgusting. How can anyone take someone who refuses to debate seriously?
Vieira could be the most successful chairman in football history, the way he grabs on to power alone is enough for me to want him out. If you're honest and you're doing a good job you don't need to grab on to power, people will willingly give it to you.

You mentioned they made around a billion euros from sales but you forget that the club doesn't see all that cash. You need to factor in high commissions for agents and transfer brokers, player passes being divided, debt payments to banks, and many other things. Unfortunately, people are greedy and they all want a slice of the pie, especially in Portugal. A lot of parties are involved when Portuguese teams are about to sell players so there is a huge amount of pressure on the leaders to make a deal as fast as possible. Especially from shareholders. The club is lucky if they see close to 50% of a transfer fee. Also, the money never comes in all at once. Some teams won't start paying for a player until a year or two after the player made the move. Money is constantly coming in and out of clubs like Benfica, almost like a river. The economic state of the big three in Portugal requires them to sell in order to keep the lights on. They don't generate enough money to stay alive without transfers. SL

Simply put, Benfica forms great players for the use of others. When a player is a finished product, as in, is ready to compete, maybe, maybe he makes 6 great months at Benfica A and then is sold.
I mean, I get that players like João Félix - after a great season - are bombarded by proposals of other big clubs, but with a little more ambition from the president and the so called 10 years ahead "structure", shouldn't we be doing much more to retain the great players for at least 1 more year? We have pictures of our president holding another club's jersey after selling a Benfica player, celebrating. His business isn't winning, is business. If we win trophies, great, if not all good - it's the same for him - that was never his priority. He uses Benfica as a shield, he doesn't serve Benfica.
Another thing worth mentioning, never in our history we invested so much as the 20/21 Season. Why is that? Why would we decide to invest 80M€ in a time like this? Every company is lowering budget, and Benfica decides to invest at a time like this? You might think it would be to form a super team, but no. It was simply to win elections, as Vieira is being very contested, and I'm not even sure if he won, because nobody counted the physical votes, among other reported "issues".
We are tired of lies and demagogy and shadiness in pretty much every area of the club.

Then they started to look at the academy and came big names like oblak ederson lindelof ruben dias João Félix. They all played at the main team. In fact, with Lage Benfica had 4 academy players in the XI eleven and had done the best second half of the league in his history. I think that it says a lot... then they fired Lage and went for JJ and good individual players but at an high cost... Is all about money, not about results. The policy should be like ajax which is 2 or 3 academy players in the XI eleven followed by 2 or 3 veterans that can help them and be the liders and the rest by good/decent players that have quality and experience. When Mourinho, brought in as a caretaker manager before Vilarinho took over, led Benfica to a 3-0 win over Sporting, he marched into Vilarinho's office and demanded he be made permanent over none other than Toni. the only thing i cant agree with is the business mentality that the club has, of the investment made thinking like man city, psg, chelsea, liverpool, man utd and so on, and the reason is that the portuguese league does not provide enough revenue to pay these type of players and to make this strategy sustainable, and that's also the same reason why the clubs cant keep the absolute superstars that we manage to find and produce (in every club) . so wen we are looking at the players that benfica had and if we come with the argument of "if we had kept them all we would be such and such" that' is such non realistic thought because of the numbers that are involved in football right now. just imagine that team, now imagine having to pay at least, 2million clean per player , that would amount to roughly 100million in salaries per year, and this is completly not sustainable in portuguese football.

I was wondering when you were making a video about Benfica since you're a Benfica fan and they're going through a crisis

M8 do a video about the sustainable grow of Braga. If you do some research you can see how much they grow up,by investing in one of the most promess football academy's and the continuous presence on european competition and also the sales of big future players like Francisco Trincão and Pedro Neto, and many more.
