Although I was absolutely terrified when I suspected this, I realized that showing respect was the best way to guarantee that nothing bad would happen. I used to live in Honolulu, and came across Yakuza vacationing. (Showering off the sand in Waikiki, actually.) Tattoos, cut pinkies, the whole nine yards. One must’ve seen my mixture of surprise and fear; he looked at me, flashed a very genuine smile, and gave me the Shaka sign. (Again, pinky half-gone.) I did the same and walked on.
The easiest way to handle crossing paths with a member of the Yakuza is if you leave them alone they will leave you alone and your pinky fingers will be intact.
Kiryu is the epitome of an old school yakuza, a guy with morals which the rest of the yakuza in Kiryu's world don't have... Shintaro Fuma and Majima are also old school, albeit, Majima is a psychotic madman who has loyalty to his brother, Saejima
There is nothing wrong about getting one. But make sure to not show them in public. You might get shot or labled as a gang member, so you WILL be followed. Just pointing this out

I'm glad your top point at least illustrated to a small degree the complex dynamics that exist between the Yakuza and the other citizens of Japan. While pretty much anything goes in terms of 'business' dealings, the Yakuza often 'police' the territories that belong to them and are, in a sense, responsible for the people living in their districts. In many situations citizens approach local Yakuza before the police, because they know they'll get swifter results. I'm not saying this is a good thing, but it certainly makes for an interesting dynamic. I wish you spoken more about their tattoos, though. There's a very traditional method that Yakuza use that's different from Western tattoo artists, and supposedly it's much more painful. It's pretty interesting.
