Thanks for introducing my country’s stuff to English speakers. It’s well researched. Right now Yamaguchi-gumi have split into three different groups due to their political issues, and ironically all 3 call themselves Yamaguchi-gumi.
The Japanese media is keeping an eye on them in case they start a “war” after the split, because rebellion is absolutely unacceptable in Yakuza’s rule. But no major conflict has occurred except minor incidents.
At last, Yakuza’s stress comes on the first syllable.

I had heard that there was a museum of some sort in Japan that had the skin of several yakuza, stretched out & in glass cases. I have a friend in Japan whom i had asked about it. He confirmed that it was true. The yakuza had been killed, carefully skinned, tanned, the skin carefully stretched out then framed. The police, many decades ago, had this done so they could study the patterns & more easily identify yakuza members from various gangs. It wasnt until later though that they were donated to a tattoo preservation museum, which also, now apparently, accepts the donated tattooed skin from non-yakuza, normal every day ppl, who have recently died & wanted to donate their tattooed skin.

The way he stated it is somewhat misleading. The liver damage is caused by the pigments used to color the tattoos, which are poisonous in larger doses. I'm not sure if this is the case anymore, as they may use more conventional pigments, but back when they needed to make their own some of them were essentially poison.

The sentence "take... a little silver knife - on a table - and you pull it towards you and bend over and your bodyweight will snap your finger off..." doesn't really make a whole lot of sense without a little more info... I assume one sandwiches the 'knife-on-top-of-finger-knuckle' setup between the table and one's own upper body, like leaning, bodily, on top of the knife in order to apply more weight while drawing it toward yourself and over the knuckle in a cutting motion. That's really the only sense I could make of the arrangement in the sentence.

The correct term for these tats is horimono

    • @mrkevinhaughey

Cool video. But... Tattoos blocking sweat glands has never been proven to be true. Some doctors say It's "theoretically" possible that large full body tattoos could block/prevent the sweat glands from working properly. But there is absolutely no empirical data to say that it does, as there has been zero studies into the matter.

Korean forced laborers were imported into the Osaka area in the pre-War years when Japan owned Korea. They are denied Japanese citizenship because of Japan's laws so many post-war have North Korean passports and have formed Korean Yakuza clans. They were sending duffel bags of cash by ferry to North Korean ports for years and very active in drugs (heroin, meth, and counterfeit pharmaceuticals), counterfeit money (US dollars and UK pounds), and bogus cigarettes and the like along with human trafficking. When I was working as an expat in Seoul in the late '80s I would often see Korean Yakuza members in the health club at the Hilton Hotel that was owned by Dae Woo which I inferred had connections to them. I once saw a guy so tattooed that my first glance thought he was wearing a skin-tight dark long-sleeved shirt. When I got closer I saw the ink. Lots going on over there and you could probably do a couple of more programs on Yakuza activities. Thanks for the video.

oh how funny... I keep metal fork on me in case someone attacks me on the street so I can fork their eye out. Having to try to cut a cow eyeball in class, I would assume it needs quite a bit of a force to actually fork it out but I still think getting stabbed in the eye is no fun thing.
