Yeah this is an old show they clipped up, the full show is out there. They did a couple episodes, the main host is a famous former Japanese mma fighter from early ufc days
These guys are not serious, Vice is just sensationalising them to make them look like criminal gangs but it's made up of majority citizens.

….this short video is alright but let me fill you guys in on something as a Japanese and inform on why this is happening. One of the reasoning behind “gangs” rising up is because yakuza for quite a while now have been what Japanese say “tainted”. Meaning, that the reason there has been a decline in the Yakuza is not just because of the police but members decided to move on because a lot of the ideology has been “tainted” by the influence of Korean-Japanese members. So because of that members left and moved on in life and many have decided to start their own factions “gangs”. Yakuza doesn’t hold its value or name anymore as it once did. With police or with society. Before there was a level of respect but now they’re just disregarded by the public…….lot more to it but that’s the word in the street :)

Historically, Koreans, mainly the old heads, (and rightfully so) have a hatred for Japanese because of colonial times and some f’d up stuff the Japanese did to Koreans during that time. So even until now, they pass that hatred on to new gen and continuing the cycle….but it’s not necessarily because they’re Korean it’s because yakuza has always been a culture heavy based organization, and since Koreans started coming in the culture and structure was not there as much. So you started to hear about them fighting internally

Yakuza was interesting because of their extreme dedication, loyalty, and professionalism. Similar to a Japanese version of the Italian mafia decades ago. Anyone on the outside was intriguee by the close familial ties, rules, and organization. New modern gangs are nothing special, everyone is out for themselves.
yeh thats what makes them interesting and cool. the mafia and yakuza and such, they have their own world and culture, really intriguing how they organise their stuff

The principal of my Junior Highschool was Enson Inoue’s mother. Still remember when his brother Egan Inoue was offering jiu jitsu classes at school. Wish I would’ve took it then but at the time nobody really knew about jiu jitsu so I jus passed on it. If I’m not mistaken I believe it was free also. Time flies tho this was back in 1998
Man as a salvadorian im baffled at how different this gangs are. I grew up in El Salvador when gangs where at their peak in over there your own men would kill you over nothing and in the most brutal of way. Here you can see real trust in each other over there you cant trust no one because the same people you eat and do works with will be the same people who visit you with a chainsaw.
That's the reality of it everywhere I wouldn't say everyone thinks like them in japan

Japanese culture has strong roots in honor and respect, and it caries over into the gangs...for the most part.
Japan is still a relative safe country compared to what El savador used to be. Before your president cleaned up the country. Your nation was considered more dangerous than Iraq and Afghanistan during their wars with the US.
People are just looking to be accepted in this world that people feel is less and less caring of them. And some people will find this comfort in a gang. Simple as that

If these guys say there is no strict hierarchy in their organization and they are all "equal"....then this is the Japanese version of the Italian 'Ndrangheta. Japanese authorities should really pay attention to it since this type of mafia is way more dangerous and reckless than the usual Yakuza or Sicilian mafia.
there is no strict hierarchy because thats all the gangs with rigid hierarchy in their organizations have been completely infiltrated by the police. The new loose knit gang structure is the modern answer to an overbearing modern police force + harsh anti-gang laws

The Camorra is an older organization as nasty as it can be, it already has it's long history in Italy's crime world. Have you seen the movie "Gamorrah"? It's really disturbing 🤯.

The Yakuzas have been around way longer, are much more experienced, well structured, and are probably much higher in numbers. They would wipe out this so-called nonhierarchical gang.

I dont know. There arent that many yakuzas anymore compared to the 70s, 80s. And most yakuzas do "outsource" a lot of things to small gangs like these.
@@naj4261 I am saying if these gangs went up against the Yakuzas they wouldn't have a chance. The Yakuzas have diminished in numbers after the police cracked them down, but they're still more powerful than any small gangs.

Even the hardened gangsters have a real Japanese humility to them. Very interesting. You don't see much smiling in western gangster pieces, if they do it's to show their iced out grills.

Sounds good that "we are all equal" but in reality every gang all over the world always have leadership (some share equally others mostly take a much bigger share). I can't believe that is so hard to get or use firearms in Japan. Being an arms dealer must be a very good business......

It took me a second to realize this was Enson inoue. I'm not surprised seeing him narrating/doing this video. Enson is a real warrior. He should of told the story of when he saved Nobuhiko Takdada from getting beat down by the yakuza in that club back in the 90s.

Yakuza is dying because of restrictions against them and ii believe from a vice report one of the them said " Once they get rid of us only worse people will replace us" The yakuza started out almost like a charitable community association helping out the poor but now that they are almost extinct japan will have much worse criminals taking over the underground like the Triads .
The Yakuza are old news and old men. There's are reason why these Hangure street gangs are becoming more popular, there is a power shift happening.

Yakuza are losing power in many directions in Japan. Society doesn't even consider them anymore.
The gangs will find a gap in that vacuum and I'm not convinced the Japanese police will have a method of countering it.
A gang with high potential for violence in a polite society where the police negotiate with a calm organised crime is a recipe for disaster once that gang understands the power it holds. Hopefully they keep innocents out of it.

Japan is going to have more problems since these gang clusters are not organized and their crimes are more sporadic. In the Yakuza at least they had a strict structure keeping the underlings in check.

This is a very very concerning trend, as young men become alienated and isolated in modern society across the west and east they start getting into crime, organizing political movements or gathering around certain figures. We live in very interesting times.

I don't find them comparable with Yakuza and Yet to believe that there has been any confrontation between them. The views regarding tattoo is changing bit by bit but it is still greatly looked down and somewhat shunned upon by the vast majority ( within the scope of my experience). Since, this is still the case, yes, ppl with tattoos are not an everyday encounter for most ppl living here in Japan (the reason might be that ppl hide their tattoos or have them in an easy to cover areas). That being said, the op comment is not wrong in assuming that ppl with tattos are uncommon in the society.
Edit: i have a tattoo myself ( one on my left arm) i have to cover them up when visiting certain places and areas 😁😁

Don't know what it is, but criminals and street fighting types just look different from the rest of the population no matter where you are. And its not the tattoos, its their face, eyes and the way they look. You can immidiatly spot a fighter just by looking at them.
