Biggest thing for me in this clip is Gil saying he collected 550 jerseys of other players while playing. That's a crazy number and really shows how much you just love watching other people play too.
I just gained SOO much respect for Gil after hearing this. He could have taken a check with Doc rivers as a veteran "coach" instead of a player. This reminds me of when people take jobs after they have a full pension and millions in the bank taking a spot for a younger worker in America. It's nice to have that opportunity, but this thought process is nice of what Gil did.
I get what you are saying but corporate America has some ageism as it is anyway once a person is over 40. That person over 40 with 15+ years of experience might not get it unless it is executive.

It's a shame they couldn't put the feelings into words or tell stories about what it was like, but you could tell how intensely painful it was for them. Not sure what's worse, knowing you're done because your body just can't do it, or getting tossed out by a league that doesn't really care about the players once they're not useful anymore.
I remember when Gilbert couldn't move the same for my Grizzlies. When he was bringing the ball up. Instead of attacking the rim. He was bringing ball up as he was backing down the defender full court.. I am like WTF gil is doing. 😂
I've been watch Gil's pod cast for awhile. I do remember him on the Warriors, but I respect him more now then when he was a player. As good of a player he was. His pod casts are great.
A recent example is Vince Carter. He hung in there until he just started to slow down with age and wear/tear. Started being over-aggressive and foul a lot because he couldn’t keep up with the younger guys.
People gotta understand, Gil dropped 60 on Kobe and had the MCL injury IN THE SAME season. One can argue we never saw his “potential prime”. Edit: Kobes' Lakers since y'all wanna be so specific 🙄

You know it's real when they can't even complete a sentence to describe what it was like and how they felt. It's a shame but most players end the exact same way. It's not a sport like football where you get exposed for not being able to make the same plays or so obviously hurt there's nothing you can do but leave, but still most of them get taken apart piece by piece until they just can't be the player that got them to that point. The difference is some accept it and walk away, but others hang on and become a shadow of themselves. Glad he refuted the "he was blackballed" belief. It's hard to acknowledge, but for many of our favorites, they were simply no longer good or dedicated enough to warrant a spot on an NBA roster.
Prime example of a vet that just takes up a spot and really did nothing for the team. Udonis Haslim. There was no reason for his bum self to take up a spot where someone could do something.
the fact that he said Hollins "didnt fuck with the young guys" says so much about NBA culture and how you can have so much talent but if oyur coach didn't fuck with you there is NOTHING you could have done. Josh Selby is not a bust, he went to a team that the coach was never going to play him. How many other coaches out there "don't fuck with young guys", it's sad to think.
