This actually happened to my gym teacher last semester. The kids in class were always so rude and my gym teacher was the kind of person that believed that even if you aren't good at a sport, as long as you are a good sport, it can still be fun. I was one of the few kids who actually listened to him, followed the rules, and attempted to be nice and a team player to everyone. Then, at the end of the semester, my gym teacher said to me, "You were a pleasure to have in class and your gonna go far in life." Words cannot express how good it felt to hear that 😊

I teach 6-8. This is sooo accurate 😅 I don’t even address their questions while I’m giving a lesson or instructions unless it is directly related to the lesson and even then, they have to hold their question until I ask them if anyone has a question at this point in the lesson

I do agree in theory, but I'm afraid to make my students dislike me right from the start. I haven't started teaching yet. How can I manage to give a strong impression but not make them dislike me for it?

Let the kids know what you want from them (things like not talking when you're talking, respecting each other, not wasting class time) and the consequences if they break. I also tell them what they can expect from me to try to make it fair (e.g., will help them, will respect them, will let them out on time unless they’ve wasted lesson time)

Its all about your aura that you project. Even if you don’t feel in control, you have to act like you are. Always remain cool under pressure. Students want a leader they can trust and rely on, so its important to make them feel safe and supported. Likewise, you need to set the expectation of what you need from them in return. I tell them Its a mutual relationship that only works if it goes both ways. So its in the kids best interest if they participate

In chemistry class, a student walked in & called the teacher an N-word, started throwing a football inside class with his buddies, and my teacher rolled his eyes and continued with the lesson. Everybody was laughing and shouting. Believe it or not, this is common behavior at my school. It is very hard to discipline students when most punishments have no teeth. I’ve seen Kids in my schools get away with some nasty things.

Trust me students don't give a shit whether you talk or not they know Teachers would be blamed for not teaching or for bad grades and parents are ever ready to put blame on teachers anyway. Trust me it is my personal experience as a primary and middle school teacher. I have tried everything and teach students one topic in every way possible I can and still they don't pay attention or behave in acceptable behaviour, in the end parents blame us like it is our fault. They literally argue with us in front of kids while we are responding politely. Kids can see all this .

Set rules on day one but also give them lots to do with their hands because if you only talk on day one they will become bored. And most teachers on day one talk too much. As students walk-in you tell them, this is the time to use the restroom and sharpen their pencils and get their drinks. Once the bell rings they are your students and the learning begins, no one leaves for bathroom, or drinks. When they speak out with questions and interrupt, say" I will answer that when the bell rings, and others leave .". Then when the bell rings to dismiss, all his classmates leave. The interrupting student stays and you can answer his interruption questions. They learn quickly not to interrupt.
