His story is nearly identical to mine (I haven't left...yet), and our third new head of school in a year is incompetent and running the school as a dictatorship (not trying to melodramatic, but couldn't think of a better word.) We used to work as a team unit, solving problems and working together. Now we are told what to do, and we do it. It is demoralizing. Schools that want to implement a lot of draconian rules (ie, former students not allowed to come back and visit) are more than happy to see teachers like Reynolds leave. He’s a free thinker, he’ll push back, he’ll ask why, he’ll want discussion and buy in, and he’ll get other teachers stirred up. That’s the opposite of what they want.
THEIR ideal teacher is one who will stick to the curriculum without deviation, and adopt directives from admin without arguing. They aren’t thinking of the kids. They’re thinking of smooth implementation of administrative goals.
In short, teachers like Reynolds are a wrench in the works. Not an insult. Most of them are proud to be…I know I was! 😁

@@elizabethcongedo6134 I've subbed in the Central Valley of California for 4 years. I'm working on my teaching credential. There is no teacher shortgage, at least in California. Granted, there may be a teacher shortage in other states. Understand, though, that many people people can confuse a labor shortage with an intolerable workplace or employers who offer insufficient pay. For example, there are more than enough truckers, but there are not enough trucking companies offering good pay and livable working conditions to make it worth it. Hence, the so-called 'trucker shortage'. Here in CA, there are more than enough people who want to be teachers. At the last teachers job fair in my county, there were 500+ possible applicants. Schools actually had to turn away potential applicants. The only way you can get a job in many school districts is by knowing someone or by being related to someone in that school district. May Los Angeles County be short teachers? Sure. But why do you think that is? It's not a shortage of teachers. It's just that there are teachers who do not want to show up to work everyday only to be abused by students, parents, and administrators, for a low salary to boot.

@Levi Hoffman I am interested in hearing more about your perspective. In my area, we have an absurd amount of teacher positions that have been open since the start of the school year.
Also, I worked as a school counselor for two years. As part of my job, I worked with students on their goals for after high school. I worked with approximately 300 students in that time. I would say I can count on one hand the number of students who plan on becoming teachers. If we don't have a shortage now, it's coming. There simply aren't enough people willing to enter the teaching profession, and teachers are leaving in droves.

I wasn’t a previous subscriber-this just popped into my feed and I love that you are so passionate about being led by Christ and about teaching-it’s so important and the state of the public school system is really in flux right now. I just began homeschooling my sophomore daughters this school year and it’s great to be able to use Biblical curriculum and to not have them in an environment of such constant negativity and chaos (referring to other high school students-not teachers) But I’ve been very taken aback at the things that were lacking in their education that I wasn’t aware of. They have always been honor roll students so I had assumed they were learning everything they needed to, but I’m shocked at some of the fundamental things that have been missed. Not to knock the educators-I’ve loved all of their teachers, I just think there is so much going on now in schools and especially with the Pandemic and now the amazingly high turnover, that’s it’s not as stable as I thought it was. So we are working on filling in some of those gaps with homeschool, and I’m so blessed to be able to have this opportunity. But it’s awesome to see teachers so passionate about educating our children. The school system is going through a terribly tough time and you and all the other educators will be in my prayers! I’m going to subscribe because I’m sure a lot of what you talk about will relate to teaching at home. I just hope to encourage you in even some small way because transitions are hard and I sympathize, but it seems like you are going to be able to use this platform for a LOT of good!!! So congrats on the move and im excited to see more of your videos and how God works through this move from here on.

Your videos helped me over the past six years in my transition from community college adjunct faculty to high school English teacher in a small private school in the Midwest. Your mission- and student-focus helped me succeed in the hardest job I’ve ever had. I left there this past summer and am now loving teaching in a medium security prison, helping offenders get their GED’s.

What a video CJ, hit the bloody emotions for sure! Just wanted to say thank you for everything you've done. I remember coming across your video in 2019 (in my second year) and feeling quite lost in regards to my own style of pedagogy and being myself in the classroom. Your videos gave me so much guidance and confidences that what I was doing, was good, despite the naysayers. Going into my 5th year now, I can safely say you have made a huge impact on the teacher that I am and the teacher that I will continue to be. Best of luck with your new adventures. Best wishes from Australia.

As a Christian of 20+ years, who worked in private "church schools" for over half of my career and now am entering my 3rd in the public sphere--I feel you. I have I have reached FAR more kids by remaining to be who I've always been--Christ-like-as-possible. That has resonated with soooooooo many of these kids who don't know Jesus, but are desperate for someone to show them unconditional acceptance and support. It has easily been the best professional decision of my life.

I'm coming up to my 40th year teaching in the public schools and let me tell you... I have no idea how I survived all these years! It seems like I've been through hell and back and consider it miraculous that I am still teaching today. Thankfully, I landed on my feet and am now in a wonderful place... but in order to get here, I've experienced one nightmare after another! I feel sorry for anyone entering the teaching profession today. They are surely in for some difficult times ahead and circumstances they clearly do not deserve!

I have been around in teaching for over 20 years easily and this is it for me. I had a long hard look and cry and just thought,, "How the hell did I survive? What have I DONE to myself?" I plan on going to the district in the next couple of weeks and officially resigning. Already talked with a few financially advisors and though I will be nowhere near where you are, I'm still in my 50s and in better health that most 25 year old men. I'm not an athlete but someone who took care of himself.

CJ. I met you through videos as a 45 year old in college. You helped me become a teacher. I’m a 5th grade first grade teacher at 48 years old. I appreciate the kids and just focus on that. Teaching can be so political and that is something I heard about but was not ready for. I started a school in August and was gone in September. I’m at my second school and enjoy it - for the most part. I still watch your videos and have your book. Like so many, I try to bring the gun into teaching. I’m glad you will still be a voice for us. Congratulations to you and to the teachers and students whose lives you will touch. About a month ago, I informed my administrators that this year - my 39th year - would be my last to teach. In my twenties, I saw a retirement ceremony and thought it would be nice to teach for 40 years as some of the teachers who were being honored had done. It was not a conscious thought, but when I passed the mid-30 year mark, I would think about it occasionally. In the last few years, I was trying to achieve that goal, but I realized this was the right time for me to dedicate myself to creative pursuits. I retire several years ago and came out of retirement, so this time I am just calling it a resignation. I will try to make sure my students and colleagues are prepared for the next chapter. I, too, am a high school English Teacher.

I commend you for encouraging teachers; I don't have it in me to encourage teachers to go into teaching as a college major anymore, unfortunately...especially in NC. I do mentor those that are already in the profession but so many are leaving, I fully understand their decisions.
