    Boy how I miss these beasts along with the AC60’s you definitely knew if one of those bad boys had the full 6,000 hp in em amazing video!

    Great catch! Good thing these were caught on video given the short service life of these units

    Those locomotives were such Black sheep in the EMD line-up. Too bad they weren’t very successful

      EMD should have learned then to put isolated cabs on all locomotives back then.... but it didn't.

      Terrible harmonic balancing and not redesigning the crankshafts is what doomed these units from the start.The SD9043MAC's were already out and about because EMD didn't complete the 265H's yet and were eager to stay competitive after GE's AC6000CW's.Caterpillar made the mistake of returning the 265H as the 1010J for the SD70AH-T4's.
      Both units ironically were major failures for EMD.They really were the reason why General Motors outright sold EMD and why Class 1 railroads rarely hold onto modern EMD units anymore once they hit their age.

    These things were monsters. I was fortunate to catch UP 3545 in 2018 when I first got into railfanning. That was the only active 90MAC I ended up catching. I've been a train fan my entire life. Wish I could have started sooner...but oh well. I appreciate the footage of this one though! Awesome job! I just became a subscriber. Awesome content!

      That's because the actual SD90MAC's had 265H's which were the first and only four stroke motors EMD actually built.Later on,the 265H's came back as the 1010J's in the SD70AH-T4's and ironically were failures as well.
      The SD90MAC's just like the AC6000CW's weren't great.Both units were problematic on mainteance and not reliable.Both units still would've been rebuilt due to EPA regulations if they were actually reliable and retained their original motors.

      @@sepa2401The Buell B3s were put on them after they were sold to EMLX and leased to Mexican railroads, where their original horns were likely stolen and that’s why they ended up getting the Buell horns. The engines were built with standard K3LA / HAs like most other UP engines

      They scrapped the SD90MACs, they converted another version, the SD9043MACs into SD70ACU

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The SD90MAC H1's & H2's were plagued with issues from EMD.There also was a SD89MX but it never got interest or purchase after what happened with everything else.
      Union Pacific owned 60 SD90MAC H2's while Canadian Pacific owned 4 SD90MAC H2's.The units from Union Pacific were scrapped or became EMDX units while also getting rebuilt and exported.The units from Canadian Pacific were outright scrapped.The biggest problem about them was the motors.The fatal mistake was harmonic balancing and not redesigning the crankshafts.They suffered from alot of internal vibration which caused damage to crankshafts,motor mounts,and other components.The SD9043MAC's remained in usage until most ended up with cracks in the frames.The convertibles were out before the H motors because they weren't development at the time until later on.This why there was extra motor mounts.
      110 SD9043MAC's became SD70ACU's with Norfolk Southern.65 were sold to PRLX and are in storage.Canadian Pacific rebuilt 30/61 SD70ACU's but their SD9043MAC's remain in storage if not scrapped.The EMD 265H's later on were actually rebuilt but only got prolonged usage in Asia,India,and China along with the 210H's.The 265H's are what the CAT 1010J's are primarily based on in the SD70ACE-T4's.The two motors have the exact same blocks but the crankshafts and fuel injection are different.Due to EPA regulations the 1010J's only stay at 4,700 HP.The 265H's were all 6,300 HP motors.

      UP had quite a few of the 4300 HP 90 MAC units that lasted a lot longer than the H versions did. The H engines were very unreliable engines and vastly different than other engines offered by the manufacturers. One difference that was costly to the railroads was that EMD required them to have 50/50 anti-freeze in them to maintain warranty coverage. They weren’t too awful bad to work on other than all the special tools needed to change just power assemblies, it was a good thing for the machinists when those were pulled out of service. What finally took the last 4300 HP versions out was the frames were cracking. That was the last straw and they got sold off or turned into razor blades.
