Mr. Peterson. I had looked up "Tubalcain" a couple of years ago when I first ran across your channel because I knew it was Biblical and I thought it might have to do with blacksmithing or metalworking of some kind. He was skilled in all manner of bronze and iron work. Thanks for confirming that. I pray you have many more years of teaching, not just 5. I know that Psalms talks about a person promised 70 years or 80 by reason of strength, but Genesis 6:3 God said He would limit mankind's years to 120. So again I say long life to you and may you rest in eternity only after you are satisfied as the Bible says (Psalm 91:16).
Thanks for all your work on these videos. They are interesting and informative and I think helpful to those who aren't professional machinists. Having been a machinist for the last 36 years, starting out cutting stock on a horizontal bandsaw and working my way up to CNC machinery, I can appreciate all the aspects of how you teach. I've also learned that any 2 machinists will approach a task differently and neither may necessarily be right unless it comes to safety, so I will view another's method with the idea of learning something which might be possibly be better than I had come up with or at least be able to appreciate a different way of doing something. Keep up the good work, and all the best!

Rick Bagnall you are spot on. The bible says 3 score and 10, but a man can lengthen, OR shorten his days on this earth. I wanted to be a machinist, and took HS Machine Shop. I loved the work, but my life took a different path. Watching these videos has reinvigorated my love of machining and I recently purchased a lathe to get started. I too hope MrPete/Tubalcain/Lyle has many more years of strength, life, happiness, and a willingness to share his knowledge. I watch other machinist videos, and am tickled when I see them using the ways of Tubalcain, especially when I see a copy of his Tuna/Chicken can oil can sitting on there machinery. I have watched so many of his videos, Lyle seems like an old friend, and if he passes before me, I will miss him dearly. But he has ensured his legacy will go on through all his videos. To Lyle, and men like Lyle, there are damn few left.
PS: I love his sense of humor, and he brings us great joy. "FORESKIN" - I about busted a gut.

I like your modification! As far as folks who get upset with your modifications, thumb your nose at them and keep moving! I once thought modifying machines was a no no. You see all my machines are line shaft era. Sadly many of the features of newer machines had not yet been thought of or my machines were not shipped with those attachments. I have started improving my machines to better suit my needs. When I first got my 1903 20" x 36" lathe it had an ugly home made gear arrangement at the outboard side of the spindle. I removed it thinking it was not original and did not belong. Fortunately I did not scrap those gears. It turns out those gears were to further slow the feed. I was forever plagued by coarse finishes on my machine because it had such a high feed rate without those additional gears. I have since reinstalled them and I now get a much better finish. It turns out that they will not interfere with any operation other than left hand thread chasing, and I can easily remove one gear allowing me to reverse the lead screw to accomplish this task.
    All the best!
    Mike

Whelp, you can bet your bippy when I take my dirt nap (only a few years behind you) I'll be asking St. Pete, if I get through the gates, where the Tubalcain shop videos are...if I don't make it through the gates...Whelp I guess I'll be watching "Dancing Cat" videos shot on a cell phone. (@¿@) Besides Betty White is older than Sliced Bread and she is Timeless...so is education and wisdom. Somehow this feels like trying to get a pin out of blind hole. I'll stop now but think I'll write the Smithsonian... ;-P

Nice video, for "cosmetic purposes " you could counter-bore or dish out the front of the new hand wheel in the lathe to make it flush to the end of the shaft. BTW love your dry humor. I can't say how many more years anyone has but as America's metal shop teacher you still have a platform and a "mission" your are sharp as a tack so god willing you have many more than 5 years left.

Mr. Pete, thanks for another "sometimes you have to do it this way" video, referring to the blind pin removal of course. I probably would have attempted to hand drill a slightly larger hole 180 degrees from the pin and drive it out with a long punch. Either way the hand wheel ends up marred so one method is as good as the other.

A "dirt nap," that made me laugh out loud and my wife and her sister looked at me like I was nuts. I had you on headset and they were watching some lame House Hunter show on HGTV. That work like is the exact same type that is on my Rockwell Delta Jig saw that was manufactured in the late 1940's to early 1950's. Love that old style.

Could attach a cross bar over the face of the handwheel to move the knob out to a larger diameter and to cover the fact the shaft isn't flush. Using the original knob hole just add one across from it and you can attach the bar.

I was just thinking that you might want to add 3 small protrusions to the new knob(at 120 deg interval), facing outward (perpendicular to the shaft) to allow more leverage. Secure each with a blind pin, as they might come loose with use. BTW, thanks for all the great videos!!!

I am probably like many of your watchers in that I have a small lathe ( Myford ML 7) and can not find the room or warrant the cost of a milling machine. I hope it’s many, many, many years before you take your “dirt nap”. If you want the face of the wheel flush with the end of the shaft, you could face a little off the boss on the rear of the wheel, unless that is going to interfere with the set screw. Great video, keep up the great work. Also, as far as making mods to machines go, I make many mods to my machines to suit myself. Not concerned about what anybody thinks, let the next owner change it back to original if he or she wants to.

Just rambling again; sometimes things do get butchered you have no choice. Myself I do

sorry Mr. Peterson but I am curious about how to remove the pin in other ways too that why I like you channel people had done the thing like that and I like to read them too sometime it helps other out. you and your channel has shown and told use thing we never have seen or have done the open comment you should be happy with the info they may be given us
just saying, other people, the knowledge you are shutting out
for being a teacher you think you know that. I am very sorry if you do not understand. when I read the comments on your channel I am amazed at how meaning people had the different way of doing a job or a repair you and your subscriber put out just have to say well done to the subscriber do it

Maybe they put the ships wheel on so you can only turn the knob slowly, giving the belt time to catch up to the new setting?
It is amazing sometimes what silly inconveniences they put on otherwise fine machines.

For future reference, if you need to get such a pin out of such a blind hole, whilst cursing the such and such who installed a part that way, there is an easy way.... take a trip to your local tile store and look for diamond-tipped core bits - the smallest ones are simply for drilling holes through a hard tile (porcelain and the like) where a normal masonry bit won't work. Bigger ones tend to be for cutting out holes for pipes and cables. They go through aluminium like butter and non-hardened steel almost as well, if you take your time. Anyways, select the size that has a centre hole a tad larger than the diameter of the offending pin, clamp the part vertically in your drill press vice and simply mill out the metal around the pin, down to about half the wall thickness of the part it's in. Then grab the pin with whatever tool seems appropriate and pull the bugger out!
It's a procedure we perform semi-regularly with a piece of railway equipment we have dealings with at work. The old pin is replaced with a turned item that is the diameter of the original pin at the bottom of the hole and the diameter of the ew milled-out section at the top. The pin we have dealings with is relatively large, so the replacement is drilled and tapped about 5mm deep for an M3 thread. So next time we can just whack an Allen head bolt in the hole and pull it right out.
    Hope that helps someone.

LOL! Ya gotta do what ya gotta do! ROTFLOL!
For future reference. If you ever run into this again you can simply finish off the hole on the other side slightly larger than the roll pin size and drift the pin out in the opposite direction.
BTW I agree. "Never put a pin in a blind hole" 👍

    • @mrpete222
      @mrpete222  7 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, but locating it on the other side, and actually meeting the pin is quite another story

    • @TractorWrangler01
      @TractorWrangler01 7 ปีที่แล้ว

mrpete222 What you do is measure from the pin clockwise to an approximate half way point. Then measure counterclockwise the exact same distance. The pins other end will be exactly between those two marks (assuming of course the hole was drilled straight 😉) Then measure up from the inside edge to the pin and ad half the width of the pin. Measure up the opposite side and mark it. To account for errors in their measurements and perhaps errors in your measurements because of the difficult position you need to measure from you use the slightly oversized drill bit. You can always go back and make the hole a little bigger if you can't get a drift on it yet because of a larger error than you expected. But you should be really really close.

    Hi Lyle
I really don't understand people that are against functional improvements in equipment. The purpose of equipment is to do tasks after all. A modification to equipment which allows it to to do the task better (includes safer) is all to the good. I can see how a collector or historian might wish for things left completely as manufactured but I don't think this is reasonable. Certainly manufacturers specifically reserve the right to make changes to their equipment as they deem necessary.
Collectors and historians should be appreciative of those that take the time to keep original equipment.parts removed from their machines as you are doing :-)
    regards
    vic

You might mention to your viewers that in situations where a blind pin is unavoidable there are pull pins (fractional and metric) that have an internal thread giving something to get a hold of so they can be removed. Some pins, like the ones made by Holo-Chrome have external rings ground into them to make removal easier.

  • @MaturePatriot

A man has to do what a man has to do, to get a pin out of a blind hole! I told you once before that you put too much faith in an engineer not to put a pin in a blind hole. (MACHINE SHOP TIPS #136) LOL I don't understand, why the pin when you have a flat on the shaft, unless it saved them on production costs. No threading, and a pin costs less than a set screw, but IN A BLIND HOLE , OMG!

0:50, Understood, but you used the Tubalcain moniker before you started sharing videos, right? I hereby request you start calling yourself YouTubalcain from now on.
I bet the mfgr made the speed control shaft just so that, even if you took the ladder chain sprocket off the shaft, the ship's wheel and shaft wouldn't come off the machine for you to work on at your bench. I'm lucky I've only had a few experiences with pins in blind holes (that I needed to remove). Mostly on (crashed) Japanese robotic machinery. I gathered they were willing to compromise ease of repair for minimum mass and compactness, etc.
