As I've said to other reactions of George and other artists, George was NEVER about out singing anymore he just sang. They came looking for him at the time, and because of this legendary duet, Aretha had her one and only English number 1.
Aretha Franklin is THE greatest singer to have ever walked the face of this earth. i urge you to go down the Aretha rabbit hole, you'll not be disappointed. she could sing it all. And George also one of the best male singers ever. to have these two sing so well together and have it be such a big number one hit is very special. only Aretha's second number one hit and sealed her comeback.

The duo went on to win a Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1987. RIP to two absolute icons.

The way I understood the situation was George was holding back - one with respect to a legend (even in 85) but R&B Singers (mostly Male) didnt embrace George in the beginning. Aretha accepted the paring for unity purposes. Plus, it was a boon for her - for she had just revamped herself to younger audience with "Freeway of love". So the paring with a Guy that just had the number one song of 1984 "Carless Whispers" didn't hurt her new found visibility to the teens.

Aretha wouldn't let anybody outshine her. You should check out a special Divas Live concert where she and other powerhouses of the day performed together.... Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Shania Twain, Carole King. They would pair up and do some duets and some songs with all of them and Aretha wouldn't let anybody out-sing her.
Whitney was NOT part of that Divas Live episode though but the next one 😜😁

You need to react to "RETURN OF THE SPACE COWBOY" by Jamiroquai. I'm actually shocked that you haven't done any music by them yet. I see that you loved the Brand New Heavies, who were also another one of the great Brit Soul bands that did a major part in the ACID JAZZ movement of the 90s. I suspect that you're going to be blown away as I have been and still to this very day by this groundbreaking musical innovation of that particularly fertile period in popular music.

I think that was the whole point. You don't out sing Aretha, pretty much nobody can. This was on Aretha's album, so, George was a guest. You don't dare even try and out shine Aretha you just compliment her.
