    A wonderful video and so informative. Thank you! I'm fascinated by the history of the Habsburg family. Would you be able to do a video where you trace their family tree - particularly during the 18th century - so that we can understand where the different individuals came from who married into the family? (For example, that Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elizabeth were first cousins through their mothers.)

    My French teacher in Elementary school was from Hungary. I don’t even know how to spell her last name. I just remember how it sounds. She told the class about her life history and how she had to flee her country under absolute duress and under gun fire with her family when she was a child. This Hungarian French Teacher, who taught in Calgary, Canada, is the reason why I still love French today and I continued to an IB French Immersion Diploma program for High School! I am supposed to be sleeping but I can’t help just obsess and hyper focus on your lovely videos ❤️ Thank you!

    I was pleasantly surprised to come across your video! I was even more pleased to see you talk a bit about the Donauschwaben as I feel like it is a group not often talked about during this period. You were correct that the Schwaben and Siebenbürger Sachsen came from all over.
    My ancestors were German speakers who originated from Elsaß-Lothringen (Alsace-Lorraine in France), and made their way in the late 18th and early 19th centuries to Banat. The Banat is a historical region centered where Yugoslavia, Hungary, and Romania converged. Most of my family lived in the space between present-day Zrenjanin, Serbia and Timisoara, Romania. The German dialect spoken is very intriguing. It retains a aspects of standard and Swabian German that are relatively archaic, and uses a lot of Slavic loanwords.

    • @MelangeASMR
      @MelangeASMR  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Nikolaus, thank you for sharing, that's really fascinating! How cool that you can trace your family history through those different regions. And yeah there's so much history there, I always wish I'd learned a little more about it in school.

    Also - i wonder if you could do a video where you take us through the layout/ground plan of the Hofburg. I understand that different sections were build during different periods. It would be so interesting to go through the ground plan for the entire building and learn when it was built and how it was used. Last idea: The creation of the Ring Strasse was a vast project for Franz Joseph. Possibly you could do a video where you take us around the Ring Strasse and discuss the different uses of the buildings and their unique architectural styles. When i was in Vienna i was fascinated that each major building seemed to be from a different historical period - and yet they are built around the same time.

    • @MelangeASMR
      @MelangeASMR  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Stuart, wow, thank you so much for the great suggestions! The Hofburg has been on my list for a while, I just need to find the right material, and Ringstraße shoudn't be a problem either. Love the idea with the Habsburgs too - I'm more familiar with their 16/17th century family tree which is wild in that regard.

    Another GREAT ASMR video! Very relaxing and informative… as always!
    The many languages within the empire were a problem for both the military and civilian population during the First World War. When Przemysl was under siege by the Russians in early 1915, orders of the day were given in 12 languages!

    I really enjoyed this piece on Austria-Hungary. Many people talk about how its hyperdiversity was a weakness (at least during WWI it was, to be sure, but I think the Ausgleich system hobbled it more). In many ways it is also extremely impressive that the Hapsburg Empire was able to be a major player in Europe for so many centuries. An exceptionally resilient and unique entity that in many ways succeeded in going against a number of the geopolitical laws of physics of Early Modern Europe.

    Ladinisch is Ladin, or Ladino, in Italian. It’s a language spoken in northern Italy, similar to Romansh. Not to be confused with Ladino, the Judeo-Spanish language.

    The Austrian Empire/ Austro-Hungarian Empire along with all the Central Powers from WW1 are so interesting because they are generally ancient medieval empires that were slowly becoming defunct. It's sad that people generally forget about Austria, the Ottomans etc in history (At least in Britain) as they generally took more of a backseat in the war.

    • @MelangeASMR
      @MelangeASMR  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, there are a couple of things about the Habsburg Empire I find fascinating. Like in Austria, we have somehow eliminated all public awareness of the Spanish line and its huge colonial possessions to the point where even in academic circles, you'll find publications about "postcolonial Habsburg" that only focus on 19th century Europe with not a word on the Philippines or Latin America. It's weird!
      But since Austria is kind of responsible for triggering both World Wars, I'm happy to hear that people seem to forget about us in that regard 😂😂

    12:30 there is a language called Ladin that still exists today, so it might be that. It's a romance language but not an Italian dialect.

    The Leitha is not the border between Austria and Hungary today because Burgenland, which was in the Hungarian crown lands, became part of Austria after the First World War, so the Leitha is now mainly an internal Austrian border between the Bundesländer of Lower Austria and Burgenland.

    • @MelangeASMR
      @MelangeASMR  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahh of course, I didn't think of the fact that the border had changed. Thanks for the note!

    I'd say this just as a constructive suggestion but maybe you could try whispering a bit more, sometimes (specially on louder lvls of volume) the more whispered words are softer to hear after a while. Still i absolutely loved this and every other video of yours ;) ;)

    Galicia and Galicia having the same name isn't so much a coincidence, it's because both were inhabited by Celtic peoples at some point. The Romans saw them and gave them a name "Gauls", which today normally refers to the French Celts of the Province of Gaul, but back then was a more loose word equivelant to "Celt".
    Also, there's a Galicia in Turkey. A small group of Celts migrated down there.

    • @MelangeASMR
      @MelangeASMR  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah interesting, I didn't know about the Galicia in Turkey. There are some unexpected connections when it comes to the roots of words, I also recently learned that an old German word for Slavic - "windisch" or "wendisch" - is related to "Venice".

    • @pattedechat2457
      @pattedechat2457 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Galicia was named after the city of Halych (modern day Ukraine), but it looks like the name Halych itself could indeed be of Celtic origin.
      The Gauls didn't just live in France though. (I'm not implying that all Celts were Gauls, I just mean that the historical territory of the Gauls was much larger than the Roman province of Gallia.)
