Speed ramping, custom LUT import, stabilisation are core for me and I could edit 99% of my work on iPad alone. Beyond those core needs, nice to haves would be compound clips, detach audio. It would also help them slowly move to feature parity with the desktop if they added new features to both. For example the new Smooth Slow-Mo on the desktop version. Why not add it to the iPad version at the same time? Now there is even more separation between the two apps functionality! Of course enabling the third party plugins that they teased about on the original launch would really open up the abilities of the app and put it properly into the pro space. Especially as things like stabilisation, custom LUTS and speed ramping could essentially be done by third parties. One day to be able to go between projects on iPad and desktop is the Holy Grail, but I understand they’d need to get pretty close to feature parity before then.

I agree with all your comments. What Final Cut Pro for iPad does, it does very well. The UI is excellent and processing is efficient. However, the feature set is incomplete. Missing is the ability to use third party LUT for log processing and effects that optimize for stabilization and video noise/sharpness. Color correction and grading is done with sliders which reduces to a lot of trial and error. The philosophy seems to be that these functions are best done in camera; nice sentiment but not completely pragmatic. For time being will pass on subscription until feature set is further along (if it ever gets there).
Can you set default scaling? (Like when working with 4:3 footage on a 16:9 timeline and you don’t want to manually set scaling for every single clip? And can you add a lut to all the clips at once? Or same issue again where you have to set for each clip individually?
hi! so you can't set default scaling. Default scaling is set to "scale to fit". You'd have to insert clip, move to Transform panel and tap on scale to fill.
Thanks for the great review. This is a good FCP update - but not a great one. Apple could really do itself a favor by stepping up to the plate and delivering a more fleshed out touch first experience.
I really wish I could simply dual-boot on an iPad into MacOS. And why not? It's got the full capabilities now. There's plenty of great examples where it really is configured for that mode of usage. Keyboard/Trackpad, plugging in an external screen, HDD. And other times, I just like the appliance simplicity of iPadOS, touch only, living in the moment. Dual boot!
I am really fine with the limitations, but Apple should really get the external drive support right and add round trip capability. If they don’t do these 2, I’m not reactivating my subscription
It doesn’t seem… tooooo much different from iMovie 🤔 Say what you will about iMovie- it’s stable as heck. I really want Final Cut Pro 2 to be better tho because working between my camera and iPad is just sooooo much faster than a Mac computer
I really like FCP iPad’s outstanding background removal tool, for my simple one camera videos that involve baackground replacement without green screen. I was hoping to use the iPad version of FCP 2 for all of my editing, but I see, thanks to your review, the iPad version’s limitations. So I’ll keep doing my background removals on FCP IPad - but export the files - and finish up with DaVinci Resolve for iPad which has adjustment layers, terrific folder management, compound clips etc etc - and makes much better use of my external ssd drive. The entire project, including all its folders, project videos and graphics and other assets, can live on the SSD and not touch iPad’s internal storage Hopefully a future iPad FCP version 3 will address these issues. We’ll see! …Rowby.
The iPad is such a cool device that I love to talk about but hate to actually use. Everything on there just takes 10x longer than it would on an actual computer
Until Apple sort out file management, both within final cut and within the files app in general, anybody saying this is a pro device is simply wrong. For the record, I’m writing this on a fully spec out iPad Pro M4 13 inch so I know what I’m talking about.
My M1 ipad pro kind of lags and glitches up when running final cut which is crazy because my friends og M1 macbook pro runs full Mac version with ease 😭
It’s so frustrating. Apple needs a ground-up redesign of iPadOS to make it work - but if they do they will eat into their more lucrative MacBook sales and so they refuse.
They should increase price of ipad for more profits. Then it will feel more premium and people will buy more. Maybe 3000$ for base model without accessories like vision pro.
I’m thinking of leaving Apple because I don’t agree with them holding all their products back to control their consumer. They’re no longer pushing innovation forward. They’re limiting for max profits

also, i had heard once that if you connect an SSD to an ipad it can brick it. is that true?
hmmm i haven’t had that issue ever?
Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 is a misleading statement and title. iPad 2 is long into history. Try Final Cut Pro 2 for iPad.
How hot does the new iPad get when working in Final Cut?
Not hot at all, battery life has also been stellar on the M4.
Great Video appreciate how you explained what you use it for too. Thanks for sharing.💯✌️
anytime! ty for watching 🙏
I am really fine with the limitations, but Apple should really get the external drive support right and add round trip capability. If they don’t do these 2, I’m not reactivating my subscription
Great Video!
Much appreciated! :)
Lumafusion is surprisingly more robust. Hope Apple catches up to it.
Yeah they had external drive editing implemented back in November, and it’s single purchases too (for the app and any add-ons) it’s just more mature.
They had external drive editing a couple YEARS ago I’m pretty sure
@@yellowhouse88 Possibly. It was only implemented for iPhone 15 Pro in November.
You cannot seperate audio files
It doesn’t seem… tooooo much different from iMovie 🤔
Say what you will about iMovie- it’s stable as heck.
We’ll see! …Rowby.
good video but i miss the old The Verge! the latest videos in the feed is just hour long podcasts and that's sad
Why not mention about M1 ? is out of date?
i’ve only had access to M2 and M4 😣😔
I think luma fusion approach to touch is way better then apple at least on the editing
The iPad is such a cool device that I love to talk about but hate to actually use. Everything on there just takes 10x longer than it would on an actual computer
it really does require 10x more patience for everything.
Greeat looking video.
Great job
Until Apple sort out file management, both within final cut and within the files app in general, anybody saying this is a pro device is simply wrong. For the record, I’m writing this on a fully spec out iPad Pro M4 13 inch so I know what I’m talking about.
My M1 ipad pro kind of lags and glitches up when running final cut which is crazy because my friends og M1 macbook pro runs full Mac version with ease 😭
You could set up your preview window to be lower resolution. I’m also rendering my time constantly.
CAN WE ADD LUTS
?!?!?
No, sir! LUTs are still just built into the app, no custom LUTs.
I swear if I have just listened to the Audio of this one, I would have imagined it’s Nilay Patel.
I'll take that as a compliment 😃
Sounds like Apple needs a cloud based FCP ecosystem with feature parity that allows collaboration and cross platform workflow
i wouldn’t be opposed, but i don’t think we’re quite there yet with infrastructure.
It’s so frustrating. Apple needs a ground-up redesign of iPadOS to make it work - but if they do they will eat into their more lucrative MacBook sales and so they refuse.
so basically no external drive support.. got it. Useless
They should increase price of ipad for more profits. Then it will feel more premium and people will buy more. Maybe 3000$ for base model without accessories like vision pro.
Did they improve the files app yet? Nope.
I’m thinking of leaving Apple because I don’t agree with them holding all their products back to control their consumer. They’re no longer pushing innovation forward. They’re limiting for max profits
Apple is charging a subscription for this app but feels like they're really not working on much
I think this update says a lot about what the ambitions are. I’m surprised so many things were left unchanged from last year…
If you buy a basic Shure handheld mic you’ll look less ridiculous. Or you could get someone to show you how to properly mount a lav.
Ohhhhh…….
DaVinci would be great if it didn’t crash every time
True. I'm having more performance issues with DaVinci
Oh no, it's that "we're gonna take all the features away so it's barely considered bare bones and you're gonna like it" effect
😭
