      Speed ramping, custom LUT import, stabilisation are core for me and I could edit 99% of my work on iPad alone.
      Beyond those core needs,nice to haves would be compound clips, detach audio.
      It would also help them slowly move to feature parity with the desktop if they added new features to both. For example the new Smooth Slow-Mo on the desktop version. Why not add it to the iPad version at the same time? Now there is even more separation between the two apps functionality!
      Of course enabling the third party plugins that they teased about on the original launch would really open up the abilities of the app and put it properly into the pro space. Especially as things like stabilisation, custom LUTS and speed ramping could essentially be done by third parties.
      One day to be able to go between projects on iPad and desktop is the Holy Grail, but I understand they’d need to get pretty close to feature parity before then.

      @@rocketman-766even if they make a surface like device, there’s still many things that differentiate the Macbook from the iPad. Better battery life, better performance, bigger screens, stable positioning on the lap, built in keyboard(Which also makes it cheaper than a Tablet which would need a keyboard bought separately), more ports and better cooling. They’d make more money selling iPads that need keyboards than they would selling a regular MacBook Air anyway

    Does this mean that Apple basically still hasn’t added external drive support? I mean, what’s the point of external drive support if we’re expected to finish editing an entire video before disconnecting the drive and breaking all the file links?

    • @TheVerge
      @TheVerge  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

      So, there is NO way to link it. Your FCP Library file, which contains all your media, needs to be in one place. Which, yes can be an external drive.

    Apple's idea of 'pro' users are people who own an external drive and want to pay $50/year, and no further thought given to them.
    By the way, can someone explain to me why Final Cut and Logic are subscription based? They don't host content from creators (like musical artists, film studios, news outlets). What is the subscription supporting? The newest ipads cost more than macbooks, why is it not included?

    I've made peace with Apple's philosophy on the iPad. There are certain workflows that I can only accomplish on my Mac, and there are certain workflows that I can only accomplish on my iPad, with the Apple Pencil. Continuity and iCloud often bridges the divide between these two devices beautifully.
    Once I changed my mindset, my frustration melted away. It's not meant to be a replacement for a Mac, and it will never be, so the sooner you accept this, the happier you'll be.

    To make file structure more usable without duplicating everything, iPad OS really needs to have some huge changes, while being at that, that could also mean the same change on ios, I don't think apple ever wants that... I have the M4 pro 11 inch and honestly, it reminds me of the same experience I had with windows RT. I’m working with da Vinci resolve for iPad. The problems you’re having with final cut managing files are the same the rest of us are having with da Vinci resolve. It’s a problem with the iPad operating system and methodology, not with the software which works fine on other operating systems. Apple believes if they annoy me enough on the iPad, but I’ll buy a MacBook but that’s not true. I’ll go back to my Lenovo yoga C9 40 before I buy a MacBook. I bought the M4 pro because of its processors and excellent energy efficiency. If Apple would make a MacBook with a touchscreen, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

It’s really the big missing this… files is just not as good, and doesn’t speak well and intuitively with every other program. @@TheVerge thanks. I picked up the M4 iPad on launch. I'm not an Apple guy but recently made the switch from Android. I love it. The fewer features, the better (I can install a Linux distro on just about anything to get that custom experience). For me, I just want something that works without all the bells and whistles, and I think Apple achieves that. I don't think you're meant to multitask on this thing. People complaining about not being able to listen to music while editing on the iPad, etc. ... like, bro, you have a stack of iPhones; use that for the music. I really get why Apple is dogmatically sticking to this strategy. I noticed a few bugs in Freeform and some other jank, which I hope they address, but so far, so good. I love Procreate and Korg Gadget. Koala Sampler is something else, too. The only thing is, I probably wouldn't have gotten the M4 Pro if the Air had a 120Hz display. For drawing, you really feel the difference, and if you are going to have this thing for a long time, you might as well get the good version.

    iPad M4 pro -> 1k nits, iPhone 15 Pro Max -> 3k nits... huge difference. Would not spend that kind of money on an iPad until they fix this right off the bat. Watch dark scenes from a movie in Apple TV on an iPad M4 pro and this becomes painfully obvious how the HDR falls far short in showing decent clarity in low light scenes.

      two separate apps. desktop version is one time fee ($300) and this one is a subscription ($5 a month or $50 a year)

    I agree with all your comments. What Final Cut Pro for iPad does, it does very well. The UI is excellent and processing is efficient. However, the feature set is incomplete. Missing is the ability to use third party LUT for log processing and effects that optimize for stabilization and video noise/sharpness. Color correction and grading is done with sliders which reduces to a lot of trial and error. The philosophy seems to be that these functions are best done in camera; nice sentiment but not completely pragmatic. For time being will pass on subscription until feature set is further along (if it ever gets there).

      @TheVerge  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! one of the very first clips i imported for this review was filmed with DJI's Mavic Air 3... but the LUT was missing 😭

  • @rowanstrang8072
    @rowanstrang8072 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Can you set default scaling? (Like when working with 4:3 footage on a 16:9 timeline and you don’t want to manually set scaling for every single clip?
    And can you add a lut to all the clips at once? Or same issue again where you have to set for each clip individually?

    • @TheVerge
      @TheVerge  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      hi! so you can't set default scaling. Default scaling is set to "scale to fit". You'd have to insert clip, move to Transform panel and tap on scale to fill.

    I really wish I could simply dual-boot on an iPad into MacOS. And why not? It's got the full capabilities now. There's plenty of great examples where it really is configured for that mode of usage. Keyboard/Trackpad, plugging in an external screen, HDD.
    And other times, I just like the appliance simplicity of iPadOS, touch only, living in the moment.
    Dual boot!

    I really like FCP iPad’s outstanding background removal tool, for my simple one camera videos that involve baackground replacement without green screen. I was hoping to use the iPad version of FCP 2 for all of my editing, but I see, thanks to your review, the iPad version’s limitations. So I’ll keep doing my background removals on FCP IPad - but export the files - and finish up with DaVinci Resolve for iPad which has adjustment layers, terrific folder management, compound clips etc etc - and makes much better use of my external ssd drive. The entire project, including all its folders, project videos and graphics and other assets, can live on the SSD and not touch iPad’s internal storage Hopefully a future iPad FCP version 3 will address these issues. We’ll see! …Rowby.

    Until Apple sort out file management, both within final cut and within the files app in general, anybody saying this is a pro device is simply wrong. For the record, I’m writing this on a fully spec out iPad Pro M4 13 inch so I know what I’m talking about.
