- In late 1957, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bangalore, recruited the German engineer Kurt Tank of Focke-Wulf, a central figure in Nazi Aviation industry. By 1961, Tank and eighteen German engineers and technicians had designed and tested HF 24- Marut, a “twin-engine fighter-bomber” designed to reach supersonic speeds. HAL built several copies of the Marut for the Indian Air Force until the aircraft was decommissioned in 1985. The Marut became “emblematic of an emphasis on industrial and economic self-reliance, deemed especially important in the realms of defence industries” and was put to use in wars (1965, 1971).
Kurt Tank’s activities in India can be explored as an interesting episode in technology transfer but it is equally important to historicise his move to India in light of contemporary skilled German immigrants to India, as well as Indian aspirations to establish aeronautical research and manufacturing.
Join Jahnavi Phalkey to explore the German Émigré-aeronautical engineers, scientists and technicians-who immigrated to India immediately before and after the Second World War.
This lecture was held on September 22, 2023 as part of our exhibition-season, Sci560, funded by Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies. Learn more about the exhibition here: sci560.scigall...

Mysore Maharaja is the main backbone of this project including IISc
In the 60s, when the Soviets were selling us MiG-21s, it was very ingenuous of us to expect that they would sell us jet engines. Engines that we would fit onto the HF24 that would then become a competitor for the MiG. We must have had too much of Rum & Vodka.
An interesting lecture somewhat spoiled by giving the speaker a handheld mic; every time she turns her head, her speech fades.
To the organizers: You need to switch to good quality lapel mics.
H T 2 was exported to Ghana. HF 24 was never exported. Very interesting lecture with lots of rare details.
What's with the backlighting? Interesting lecture, wanders a bit though. The very poor lighting is a distraction.
It is not easy to start aeronautical industry or to run it to achieve building a full fledged Jet fighters. Prof. Jahnavi Phalkey outlines the efforts of bringing over to India the human resources essential to found the Jet fighter aircraft industry.
In Wings of Fire Dr. Kalam mention about Kurt Tank & Then all my ears got up because Tank designed aircraft got manufactured in huge numbers in Germany and India. So I always wanted to meet Kalam & ask about Tank but I never met Kalam & questions remained in my head . Thanks for joining the dots
Kalam was taught gas dynamics by K Tank in Banglore.
He designed the fearsome FW-190
The lady rambles and umms and aaahs a lot without getting to the point. Spoils the effect
She needs to go on a presentation course. The talk is spoiled by mispronunciations of German names, with a strong Indian accent.
@@warship000she is an Indian why tf are you expecting her to pronounce German name perfectly ???
@@athr_blu Plesae don' show your stupidity. She claims to be a researcher you ought to effing well realise that, if you have any grey matter.
@athr_blu That is a cop-out. Admission of inferiority. She claims to be a researcher and spent time in Germany. At the very least people learn to pronounce names, however foreign. Please don't show your ignorance and stupidity by using foul language.
At 26.15 she makes an absolutely stupid statement that K Tank was a designer not an engineer. Why? He was both and a test pilot. She should have done her homework.
