thinking about it now, it's actually genius to make the doctor's first interaction to be with a kid because when you have a character being so good to a kid it's the easiest thing to love
When the Doctor notices Rory taking a picture of the man with the dog, you can really see that Moffat worked on Doctor Who and Sherlock at the same time :D
Whenever there's a regeneration, I'm always waiting for the moment where I can say: Yup. That's him. That's The Doctor. In this it was. "Of course not. Box falls out of sky, Man falls out of box. Man eats fish custard. And look at you. Just sitting there. So you know what I think? That must be one heck of a scary crack in your wall." He remembered. All that nonsense with the food and the body change and everything else, and he still remembered that this little girl was afraid of a crack in her wall. He's still The Doctor.
And I luuuuv how during "basically... run" his look changes from childish smile to a steel cold. A micro change in expression but it gets me every time.
Matt gave a lot of infectious energy to the role, even more than Tennant who to this day will always be hard to top. I was sad when Tennant left but immediately loved this introduction to the 11 doctor. This is one of the best season premieres in the shows history in my opinion. Can’t wait to experience season 5 with you.
Interesting, many people had a hard time going from Tennant to Smith, I guess I was lucky and didn’t get to watch Eccleston or Tennant until I had gotten to love Smith’s Doctor so I was immune from getting upset about it. He’s an amazing Doctor.
I once worked with a woman who was a vegetarian, in a kitchen. We both absolutely loved doctor who and one day we had an order of fish fingers cancelled just after we'd cooked them. I looked at her and said "Do you want to try them with custard?" We both laughed and did indeed try them with custard. Surprisingly not that terrible!
This show is actually what made Matt Smith famous, which is definitely a great reputation. Really hope he returns for the 60th anniversary specials, but I guess we'll have to wait another two months to see. Like I said for End of Time, I did consider not watching the show anymore after David Tennant left, but when I watched this episode, specifically the scene of him trying food, he won me over. Also, fun fact, Matt Smith is actually to date the youngest (adult) actor to play the Doctor, having been in his later 20s when he got the role. You'll see throughout his era that that actually works well for him. I swear, sometimes he plays a 10 year old better than actual 10 year olds on this show. You're in for a treat, Jay.
We all change…and that’s good as long as you remember who you are. Matt Smith took the Doctor to a different level. Where chaos & regret lived side by side in a constant battle. He was the 9th doctor I’d watched & became the best, others had qualities but this guy was the complete package, the stars really did line up, stories, runner, composer, companions, everything 😢 so much to enjoy and cry at. Enjoy
The delivery by Matt is what really sells it too. You see him most of the episode being quite silly and fun, very typical Doctor. And then that line. Along with the buildup and music. As a fan since classic Who (Four and Five being my firsts in PBS reruns), I think still one of if not the strongest introductions to a new Doctor yet.
This was actually the first episode I was shown to get me into Doctor Who. I was immediately hooked and started right back at Eccleston. Hard to believe that was around 11 years ago (11 years since I first saw the 11th Hour, lol).
Matt Smith was The Doctor that I grew up watching. My first episode was a David Tennant episode on live tv. But when I started watching it weekly as it aired, the newest episode WAS this episode and had only come out 2 days prior. The 11th's theme song "Next Stop Anywhere" is so good. I've always really liked music, so this is always one always sticks out in my head any gets me hyped whenever I hear it.

Despite being the youngest actor, Matt was brilliant at portraying his Doctor as an old, slightly awkward professor. And it is a brilliant transition from Tennant's 'superhero Doctor'
New show runner! Youll probably notice the show is going to feel pretty different with Moffat at the wheel. Coming up are some of my favorite stories in the show. Moffat wrote some of the best episodes of the past several seasons too, i was pretty excited when he took over.
I'm not certain, but I'm pretty sure the scene when the Doctor tries and rejects all those foods is a reference to Tigger in Winnie the Pooh who, when he comes to the 100 acre wood declares that Tiggers like everything, except it turns he doesn't like anything (except Roo's strengthening medicine, he doesn't try fishfingers and custard). And this doctor, you will find, is very tiggerish.
I was incredibly skeptical about Matt Smith because I ADORED David Tennant in the role, but by the end of the episode, I was all in. It's a real close call now which is my favorite Doctor. Our family just got a photo with the whole Pond family (iykyk) this last weekend at Comic Con!
22:53 I just realized, shouldn't Rory recognize her? He took pictures of all of the coma patients walking in the park. Doc; What's that? Amy: A Duck pond. 23:39 Duck, Pond.
This is the episode I fall back to whenever I'm having a really bad day ... or a really good day .... or really just need a good pick me up. Amy and Rory are by far my favorite companions of all the series. It was really hard to see them go and I haven't seen characters that I connect with nearly as much snce. Matt Smith being such a child, meeting a child, doing everything possible to appease her AND get to know himself through her eyes while he finishes regenerating is a cross between PURE GENIUS and absolute beauty. Their entire story arc and character development are just breathtaking. They take such sharp turns with these characters, it will make your head spin and your heart ache.... and the cool part is, they weave the two doctors' stories (starting at the library) throughout time. Without spoilers, you're about to see: Doc wearing a cowboy hat Astronauts "Don't blink!" They didn't have a word for "pond" only "river" Richard Nixon Dinosaurs in space Doc's stuff in museums "This is a kindness" Roman soldiers "The biggest fashion crime since lederhosen"
Fun story - waaaaayyyyy back when this was new, I had a friend with a pair of tween-aged daughters who I successfully indoctrinated into the cult. I'd go round to their place to watch the big event episodes and we'd have all kinds of fun. They experienced the Doctor/Donna live and freakin' ADORED David Tennant - as one would. They'd seen Eccleston regenerate into Tennant but didn't really blink at that because Eccleston wasn't around for long and, as I said, they ADORED Tennant. Tennant's last episode was an epically emotional experience for us all - buckets of tears, much wailing! It was AWESOME, but I was able to go home and leave my friend to cope with his emotionally scarred daughters. LOL! Three days later I got a phone call from my friend, "So why did David Tennant leave?? You have to give me something to tell them, they've been crying for three days! It's like they had a favorite toy and someone smashed it and gave it back to them." At this point Matt Smith's debut was four months away so all I could do was tell him to chill out and hold the fort until then and either they'd sign onto the new guy or go off the show entirely and watch something else. I didn't get round to their place for "Eleventh Hour" but my friend called me the next day to report how Matt Smith was received. When they started watching, they were dubious about the idea of the show without Tennant, but ten minutes into the episode during a pause the girls were asked if they were down to continue and they both instantly said, "Yeah, we're good." 🤣 A few weeks later while watching Matt's latest episode one of the girls asked their dad, "So what's.... 🤔 ....what's Michael Tennant doing now?" My friend gave them SO much shit about how much they'd been prostrate with grief only a few months before and now they couldn't even remember David Tennant's name. Fame is fickle. 🤗
I have met young Amelia! She came to Ohio for a small DW convention in Hilliard (next to Columbus) and her mom was with her. She's all grown up now. She's actually Karen's (adult Amy) cousin, but they'd never met before they did this show.
Matt Smith and David Tennant are very smilier doctors I think, the same energy and likability is there. Great era to start the Pond era and Amy is one of the favourites of fans. Great reaction as always.
Even though they'd never met and nobody knew it. It turned out that Karen gillen ( Amy ) was actually related to the little girl who played little Emilia pond.🎉❤😢😊
An episode that remains exciting, even when you know it from repeat viewing and there are excellent actors even in the minor roles. At the end of the Episode Matt Smith is his own Doctor and Karen Gillan is a brilliant foil for him, showing that you can establish characters and make the audience care about them through excellent writing and acting in just one hour, something other shows often fail to manage, throughout an entire season.

My favorite modern Doctor. I think he did quite a good job of respecting it while making it his own.
Hands down the greatest run of Who kicked off by the best season. This season is a perfect blend of older Who(made for a British audience) and parts of new Who(Made for a global audience) The true shift into global Doctor Who is season 6.
I can’t sift through ALL the comments so apologies if you know this and have been told a million times!!! The actress who plays young Amy is Karen Gillian’s real cousin but they had never met before Doctor Who.. again, sorry if you already know this 😍🇬🇧
You loved 10 but you are going to love 11! For me, I liked 10 best as the Doctor, but 11's STORIES are better. All of that said, I still think 12 is my favorite once we get past his first season. MUCH to look forward too!
I love that one too. Moffat designed such a simple yet terrifying alien. My personal favorite from this season is episode 10. Vincent is such a great character. You can tell he's really passionate but at the same time is tormented. I was young when it first came out, so I didn't fully appreciate it. But when I re-watched it in college, I could and I loved it.
God I have a huge crush on Karen Gillain... And I love the whole bit with the doctor talking to the atraxi telling to run and showing all the previous Drs
Little trivia for u, prisoner zero was in the episode Dalek with the 9th doctor, u see a statue of it for a second or two, if u look at Stanton collection
There are two nice minisodes going with Series 5, called Meanwhile in the TARDIS 1 and 2. The first one is should be watched between this episode and the next and the second one immediately after episode 5.
I actually boycotted DOCTOR WHO for 3 months because I thought no one could replace David Tennant. Then I finally watched this episode, and they had me hooked in the first 10 minutes. MATT SMITH is brilliant and probably my favorite Doctor. Love seeing OLIVIA COLEMAN in this episode. She is so accomplished and of course now an Oacar winner and also currently stars as Nick Nelson's mom in Heartstopper. Fasten your seatbelt... you are in for quite a ride with some magnificent writing and acting.....
I never clicked with this doctor maybe because I was almost the same age as Matt smith when he took the role but I know he’s a lot of peoples favourites so..enjoy!
When i first watched doctor who i started with Christopher eccleston but then fell in love with david tennant as the doctor and almost didnt watch matt smith im glad i did coz by the end of this episode i really enjoyed matt being the doctor and appreciated that he made the doctor his own rather than trying to copy a previous doctor my favourite is still david tenant tho and beaides bow ties are cool 😎

28:20 That the moment I knew he was the Doctor, you're in for a hell of a ride, and I hope you'll love it.
The silence will fall when the question is asked
Hands down the greatest run of Who kicked off by the best season. This season is a perfect blend of older Who(made for a British audience) and parts of new Who(Made for a global audience)
The true shift into global Doctor Who is season 6.
I loved David Tennant so much I hated Matt Smith at first, but the bastard grew on me 😂 Welcome to my favorite era of Doctor Who 💙💙
I can’t sift through ALL the comments so apologies if you know this and have been told a million times!!! The actress who plays young Amy is Karen Gillian’s real cousin but they had never met before Doctor Who.. again, sorry if you already know this 😍🇬🇧
@11:01, Guardian’s Nebula in person, Karen Gillam.
You loved 10 but you are going to love 11!
For me, I liked 10 best as the Doctor, but 11's STORIES are better. All of that said, I still think 12 is my favorite once we get past his first season.
MUCH to look forward too!
nah
@@altinaykor364 elaborate?
Episode 5 of this season is my favorite, excited when you reach that episode.
11 and 12 are my favorite doctors in the new era.
God I have a huge crush on Karen Gillain...
And I love the whole bit with the doctor talking to the atraxi telling to run and showing all the previous Drs
Also his speech to the Atraxi was SUPER good... made me have ALL the feels
"I'm the Doctor. Basically... run". Iconic.
Little trivia for u, prisoner zero was in the episode Dalek with the 9th doctor, u see a statue of it for a second or two, if u look at Stanton collection
Silence will fall
31:28 Look at the Tardis screen. Prisoner Zero talks about the crack in the skin of the universe. Watch the episodes for the recurring crack.
There are two nice minisodes going with Series 5, called Meanwhile in the TARDIS 1 and 2. The first one is should be watched between this episode and the next and the second one immediately after episode 5.
Amelia Pond sounds kind of like a superhero name, ngl 😅
I actually boycotted DOCTOR WHO for 3 months because I thought no one could replace David Tennant. Then I finally watched this episode, and they had me hooked in the first 10 minutes. MATT SMITH is brilliant and probably my favorite Doctor. Love seeing OLIVIA COLEMAN in this episode. She is so accomplished and of course now an Oacar winner and also currently stars as Nick Nelson's mom in Heartstopper. Fasten your seatbelt... you are in for quite a ride with some magnificent writing and acting.....
AH! So it begins 🥰🥹👏🏻 So glad you loved it, what a great start to an era
Welcome back, let's get it! Matt Smith was my Doctor, i'll always love him dearly, let's get it!!!!
"Spread 'em jeff" im sure you're not the first to say that! 😂 seriously though fun reaction to a fun episode 😊
Welcome to eleven. You are going to love him. As always you have a good heart and try to see the best in people. Let's go
My doctor is here! 😊 5th and 6th seasons are my favourite..
The entire Pond arc is so amazing, and I can't wait to see your reaction to it. Sadly can't say much about it without spoiling it.
i enjoy the food bit at the beginning.... its very fun AND gets some callbacks later
Olivia Colman, who co-stars with Tennant on _Broadchurch._
Did anyone recognize this young woman as Nebula from MSU? Karen is a great actress
I just can't wait to see you react to the rest of S5...and S6! Hang on tight my dude!
I never clicked with this doctor maybe because I was almost the same age as Matt smith when he took the role but I know he’s a lot of peoples favourites so..enjoy!
Matt Smith was the youngest doctor at 26
My BOY 11, and with you too! Hey OH, Ah its going to be great, cant wait lovelies!
Fish Fingers and Custard
The man the myth the legend.
Silence will fall.
See 10 will always be my Doctor but 11 is fantastic, so much fun 😊 also can we just mention how amazing Amy Pond is!
Did you notice WHY Amy wanted to know if she would be back tomorrow morning?
