Ubel's ability to steal other people's abilities by empathising with them is like a twisted version of Frieren's journey and the central theme of the show. While Frieren is learning how to empathise with others and carry on the memory of people in order to cherish them, Ubel emphasises and carries on the memory of other people in order to weaponize them.
The more I think about it the more I like this interpretation.

Richter is a striver. Stuck in a small shop servicing old people's trinkets but desires a life of greater wealth and power. The irony is that he wouldn't be any happier or fulfilled by anything the first-class privilege would give him.

By “martial arts,” it’s not referring to Eastern martial arts as we know it. They are talking about the ways of a warrior. Another commenter pointed out that the old man was just a senile stranger. ^_^
Richter has grown on me too. It seems to me like he’s just a big softie under a tough exterior. In the first exam, he said he was going to kill Kanne or Lawine, but he listened to Denken and went easy on them and just beat them down at first. In this episode, he said he didn’t want to hang around with Denken and Laufen, but softened up as soon as he heard Denken mention his dead wife.
And Denken and Laufen does seem to treat each other like grandfather and granddaughter. Though the subtitles don’t say it that way (they often have her calling Denken “old man”), Laufen refers to him as “gramps” in Japanese (jii-chan 爺ちゃん). She seems very fond of him, like the way she went to rescue him from Frieren because she didn’t want to see him get hurt. It makes me a little sad, because if his wife hadn’t died early, he could have been a good father and grandfather.

So many new characters were introduced and yet in the last few episodes there is a beautiful woven set of connections and back stories of most of them so far 😊 the food in this world also looks soooo good 😮 frieren’s steaks have got to be the most expensive to wipe out their savings!
