    Hi Molly
I am 71 years young and I am new to computers. I just purchased a new lap top with windows11 and I am completely lost trying to do anything with my photos and thats the reason that I purchased the unit. I have man pictures to leave my children and grandkids. I’ve watched so many of your videos but windows file explorer is so different than the one that you used in windows 10.
Thanks for all that you do.

Thank you for doing this video! What a blessing among the many options out there. I was very surprised you mentioned Forever so early. Though I love tech, I have to admit I still have Historian on my PC. A client of mine was a scrapbooker and got me using it wayyyyyy back. I used to have a good workflow using it, until my iPhone. Now I mainly use my iPhone and iPad and have been looking for a way to offload and archive to free up memory on my devices and Macs. I’ll take another look at Forever and watch your vids. I come back and use your link once I pick.

This is one of the best topics I have found on the entire internet. So many photos and videos will die with the owner or the device. Just lost and forgotten. The photo albums in the cloud will be forgotten or locked behind passwords no one remembers. Even figuring out where people have their personal photo archives stored is difficult. Many of my friend have no idea how their files are backed up or even how to retrieve or transfer them. I am just going through this myself.

I was looking forever for a good photo management software for my grandma. She is still young at heart, very active and takes a lot of actually very good and sweet photos. But going through all the hotkeys and gestures on windows to create/move/rename folders and images and transfer something from here to there - that isn't much fun for her. She has a list of hotkeys written down and she kinda knows how it works but when you do it so rarely its like translating a foreign language with keys and movements and that just isn't fun. I checked "Eagle" out - one of your recommendations - and it looks very clean, intuitive and not cluttered with 100 features that hide the acutally important ones. AND it's on german - my grandmas and my mother tongue - so that's another plus - AND you pay once and get free updates forever - AND it's a local software :D Thank you a lot for shining light on these gems. I think I found one I like. I'll try it out myself for the next couple of days and when I think its good for her, I'll get my grandma a license and install/explain it for her. It will be awesome. Thank you!!

Thanks Mollie - this was an amazing video! I was just about to start a huge project: collecting, storing, and organizing family photos with the hopes to share a photo album for each of my children as Christmas gifts. As most people, I have a combination of digital and "paper copy" photos. After watching a couple of your videos I realized my project plan was not the best (thanks so much!).
You shared the two photo products you thought were best - however, I am not sure which one would be best for me. They both sound awesome. I am not sure how to pick. Can you share why you like over over the other? If you had to choose, why would you pick one over the other?
    Thanks Mollie!

Hi Raquel - Thank you so much for your comments here. . . so glad it helped.
I loved using Mylio for years but found that I didn't have the time to maintain my collection within it. It is super rich in features and is great to look at photos, however you have to export photos from their in order to share and create projects.
I now just use folders on my computer and upload to Forever so that I can easily share and make photo books and more. I love using Forever for its simplicity and for my clients, is easiest to learn and maintain. (Believe me, I have been testing this for awhile!)

Thanky Mollie, I really enjoyed your "Clean Your Digial Photo Mess!" video. My wife and I are just starting to organize/re-organize 40 years+ of photos and digital photos and videos, vcr, 8mm, and mp4, etc. I have 20 years experience in website development and told myself, I was just going to develop a website online to do the same thing that youj talked about for 20 minutes. Your top 5 were high on my list of requirements which was reassuring. You didn't mention much about videos. It's such an integrated part of our world today, that I'd love to know more about your thoughts on them. I'll try your two recommendaitons. I'm hoping that "Sharing" and "Ease of Access" in a streaming world, i.e. my phone, my computer, my TV are also a part of your top two favorites. I'll reach out to you when I get stuck.

    • @Pixologie
      @Pixologie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Andy - Thanks so much for watching! What a job it is to organize all of that! I always forget to add in the video component. I actually work with videos right along with photos - so no separate workflow for the organization of digital videos. Unless. . . a person is so inclined to edit their videos into a compilation, etc.
Forever definitely integrates video well - streaming on devices and even with Amazon Fire TV. (My recommendation is 100GB of storage and the one time permanent video streaming plan but let me know if you have questions!)
Mylio - stores videos but when you double click it - it will launch a media player.
      Neither options allow for editing.
Do you use a PC or Mac?

I find this very interesting. I already had a similar system as your 5 step plan. Mine is: 1. Upload all photos to a master plan similar to yours, I also do it monthly. But this is in a hard drive. 2. Delete bad photos 3. Edit a few good photos 4. Share on social media. (Keep good photos on my phone or iPad)
The thing I’m struggling with is doing all this with two phones and two cameras (mine and my partners) he uses android, I use iPhone. And photos app tends to the change the date metadata. I need a new photo organizer for previewing the nice edited photos at the end of the steps. Adobe bridge sounds wonderful, but I need something for IPad!! I will keep looking.

Mollie: Thanks for the video!!! It was well thought out and covered a lot of ground. A lot of hours were involved in your efforts and hopefully it will save people a lot of time. However I didn't see the best ones for editing your photos, which ones will show photo locations on a map (like Zoner Photo Studio), nor was there much information on which are free and what the costs are. And thanks for giving a warning that the big tech companies may not be your friend.

  • @yukonchris

Interesting list but i have some concerns. 1) terms of service - where are some of these applications storing your data and what rights are you giving them by default to view and use your images; 2) long term compartability and support--Picassa is a good example. You invest a great deal of time organizing a library and suddenly the application is abandoned or replaced; 3) Interoperability and compatability with other formats or applications--this is really important when building a catalog. Lets say that you have invested a ton of time over many years adding keywords and descriptive metadata to your image database and then for one reason or another you want to migrate your library to another service. Can any other application seemlessly import all that data with your photos, or will all that work be lost?; 4) Is anyone else even going to want this material? While it may be important to us, unless it is well organized, easy to access, and requires no special maintenance or cost, it may wind up being as much of a burden and a blessing to others. Anyway, a few concerns worth considering.

    • @Pixologie
      @Pixologie  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

Hi Yukon Chris - All good concerns. It is why my first go to for saving photos is in folders on my computer. Many people have lost TONS of work due to these reasons. I am most comfortable with using Forever Permanent Storage for a variety of factors but this is knowing I have my full family photos in folders on my computer.
I also believe that people currently will never be as enthusiastic about what you have done to preserve family photos and history as we'd like. You have to do this because you enjoy and are interested in it all for yourself first. Then, sometime, someday, truly someone will be interested and curious about the old family photo and video collection.
I really appreciate your thoughts! Thank you so much for watching!
      Cheers!

Synology Photos (sadly is not in your list) solved all my problems. I have full control of my entire life photo collection, with no subscription whatsoever, freely shared across my whole family with the right permissions granted, accessible from anywhere in the world.
The hardware may seem a bit expensive at first but it is well worth it.
Wondering how come you didn't mention NAS (Network-Attached Storage) (be it Synology, Qnap, Terramaster, MyCloud, you name it), not a word - it can be perfect solution for many (well, it is for me). Strong file management, privacy at your fingertips.

Hi there - I so appreciate your comment - this could help other people for sure! I have never heard of Synology Photos before. . . I will check it out. Most of our clients are not able to install a NAS on their own and so we don't generally provide education on it. We use a NAS here at Pixologie . . . does your backup to a cloud site in case something happens to your home?

A NAS was my solution as well. Installing it today, I am not techy so we will see! Seems like the perfect answer to my hordes of photos. My plan is to sync google with the NAS, and to back it up to an external drive 2x a year. I chose synology because it seems the most user friendlly, but it looks like they are not being as cooperative with people using off-brand internal drives as they used to be.

      HI Charisse -
The two main solutions I speak about at the end are:
Mylio - $99 per year subscription
Forever - Pay for the storage once - $199 for 10GB - buying more storage brings the price per GB down and they generally have 25% off. (Click here for a trial account if you like: www.forever.com/ambassador/pixologieinc.)
And. . . Apple and Google are something like $9.99 per month for a large amount of storage (200GB when I last checked.)
      Hope this helps a bit!

"Clouds" though convenient, costs go up for additional storage & private photos a hard to retrieve & they pester (track) you with ads So I am shopping for a setup to have sole control ( I have some salvaged drives to collect & burn my photos to or USB drives Or DVD discs ~ Which I am told, do not corrupt of loose data as soon. Whereas I heard mentioned that some inferior Solid State or USB drives can .Though 72yrs old I am trying to stay tech-savvy with a newer I-phone, and a Win-11 laptop ( to my regret ) Thanks for your input . I enjoyed your video. I already have 12 gb of Forever storage and was thinking of purchasing Historian to help organize my thousands of old photos prior to importing select ones into Forever. Currently, everything is either on my external hard drive or in Google Photos. My question: What features does Mylio have that Historian 6 does not? I was wondering why it was your favorite. Thanks!

    • @Pixologie
      @Pixologie  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Sheri - Thanks so much for watching! I used Historian for many, many years. I believe it is older technology and the terminology used in it is somewhat dated. Also, you don't have the ability to make folders or albums in it and I prefer to have my computer organization mirror what is in my Forever account.
I just have folders of photos on my computer and actually don't use Mylio any longer. Maintaining another program is just complicating the situation and I'm pretty busy.
For people who want to use a program, Mylio is beautiful. . . but I do caution people to be careful when choosing it because if you don't use it routinely, it can be hard to jump back in, and I think it's the same even with Historian.
Ultimately, you need to like using whatever you choose and you need to be able maintain using it. I hope this helps!

Hi Mollie! My name is Kylee and I am about to be 23 years old and a college graduate. I'm working hard to organize my physical and digital spaces before pursing a career outside of school. I think all of your advice and information is wonderful! It's definitely very helpful, especially for photos of family or important events. However, I am running into a somewhat unique issue and I can't seem to find any advice about it on the internet.
During my entire academic career, starting around middle school, I have grown up in a world revolving around social media and split-second casual moments captured on camera... specifically Snapchats and Instagram stories. I've noticed that a huge portion of my most sentimental memories are captured in these low quality and more-or-less unimportant images. They often have random stickers and filters on them too.
For whatever reason, I haven't been able to make myself delete the majority of these because of their sentimental value to me. I've gotten to the point where my friends and I will accidentally find some of these random silly moments. It's very nostalgic essentially watching the everyday moments of your childhood again, especially near college graduation. Sometimes these feel more important than the high quality, posed photos from milestone events.
On the other hand... they take up so much space. They make all my albums cluttered, and their quality keeps getting progressively worse. Is it worth holding on to these types of pictures/videos, or is it time to delete them since they are comparatively insignificant in the long run? If I keep these digital files, is there even a way to preserve their quality?
I just thought I would ask for any advice or recommendations you may have. Thank you so much!

One recommendation I have, is for those who have ignored their photo collection for years, like myself: it's an app called slidebox.
It makes it super easy to sort pictures into folders or delete them, on your phone, all by swiping. This allows you to go throw a whole bunch of pictures really fast, and it's really enjoyable.
I went through 8k images in like 2-3 hours, and was able to delete those screenshots really quick. Loved it!

Imo, I currently use Faststone as one of my applications and it is surely an underrated application. This software is like explorer on steroids and serves up some really practical features. I am in no way affiliated with the company but I find it to be very useful. Sure, the user interface needs an upgrade but the app makes up for that, best of all its completely free with no ads. Unfortunately, it will only run on windows machines, sorry Mac users including myself lol.

Hello, What is the best photo organizer for a Mac? I am so used to File Explorer on a PC and it is so easy to use. I cannot stand Albums and Folders, etc on a Mac. It is so confusing. Plus I love the fact that when I moved a photo from the "Pictures" folder, they move permanently to the folder you move them to. With the Mac, they stay forever in photos so you never know if you moved them to a folder or not. It is maddening! Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you. Brad

Hi Molly, found your videos recently and found them most helpful!! Unfortunately, I found them after I had already backed up my photos from my Android to Google Photos. I already erased the pictures and videos on my cell phone, except for everything in WhatsApp. TOO BAD.. I have both an old MacBook Pro and a PC with Windows10. Here's my question. I haven't downloaded OneDrive on my cell phone or on my Mac and I haven't purchased any storage in OneDrive, but now, almost all my photos from my cell phone and from PHOTOS in my Mac are already in OneDrive. That means close to 40 Gb!! How could this have happened? I haven't purchased any additional storage nor have I download the OneDrive App in my cell phone? I'm quite puzzeled. Does OneDrive offer support through CHat or phone? I'd appreciate any help. Blessings

And in my 5GB file there are my own photos my parents my friends of the cars of the buildings etc etc.
Is it possible for lightroom to do the same thing as Google photo?

Hi Mollie, thank you so much for this. I am a 68 year old who started using digital camera in the early 90`s. The dates are all wrong on those pictures. So that is one mess. I don`t have tons of pictures because I have never had a smart phone(someday I will probably get one). I do have an ipad now and take pictures on that. Also I download some pics that people send me on email. I have a PC. I am fairly tech savy, but ....hey, I am old. I think the biggest problem will be figuring out the dates of pictures. Would you recommend Mylio or Forever for someone like me? Are there any programs out there that can estimate dates of your digital or scanned photos? Sorry for asking so many questions. Hi Mary Ann - Mylio can find many duplicates and I love that program!
However, it can only find dupliciates if these conditions are met:
      - Exact files that are the same size and resolution
      - Exact files that are the same name, but in a different folder
      - Exact files that match, but have different names
      - Exact files that match, but have different metadata
We have found that a Duplicate Finding program that compares pixels of images may find more. Here's another video in case you want to know more. . .

Hi Pamela - what kind of computer do you use? I'm sure Mylio has the capability, but it is an advanced program that requires a lot of use to become familiar with. Apple Photos has the ability to create a smart album for photos not in any album.
I consider Forever to be a permanent home for a family photo collection - so more than a program. By chance, do you have videos also? It is an investment for sure, but I have found it the easiest solution for consumers and my clients to use.

I am so confused!! I have so many photos and videos from previous devices (phones, digital cameras, laptops, iPad, etc) and Ive uploaded much of it to my desktop (iMac) which has 1TB storage. My problem is that since I’ve purchased this desktop, it has had several updates. It is now on Catalina which I think is 2 OS behind now. My issue is that with the last update, my photo “albums” and whatever organization I had got scrambled. There are some that look ok but there’s this one album that has 10,000 photos in it and it is one big jumbled mess. No idea how or why it happened. I think it may be that some of the previously stored items were not compatible or something? Well now I’m afraid to update and I have no idea how to unscramble the mess and make heads or tails of it. I would be eternally grateful for any suggestions!! Help!! 😮😮😮
