      How do they compare to k712 in terms of sound quality... Btw did you use a dedicated amp and dac?

    • @TheTechTank
      @TheTechTank  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@daath1442 Can't really say for sure since I've never tried the K712s, but it's a studio headset by AKG so I'd assume it has superior sound quality. And nope, that would probably invalidate the testing entirely, and the Theta 7.1 has its own DAC and amplifiers built into the earcups.

    This has to be the best review I have seen on this headset. He goes into detail explaining the pros and the cons while talking about the sound quality and his experience rather than just saying they sound good, alright, or bad like other reviews I have watched.
    I am on my 2nd pair of Razer Tiamat 7.1 the first one got a short in the wires after about 3 years of use and now the replacement Razer Tiamat 7.1V2 has the same problem just after 2 years of use. I was very concern with how these headsets would sound using USB type C over 3.5mm jacks and a sound card, along with the fact it does not come with its own audio control unit like the Tiamat or Centurion. Another question I was seeking out was but what about the base tho. They removed the two sub drivers for what seems like to be able to increase the size of the other drivers, and this video gave some details on how that effects the level of base I was looking for.
    I would have rather seen them removed the side drivers and made the headset 5.1 than removing the subs. I have yet to play a game that uses the sides in 7.1, only movies, videos, and some music seem to.

    • @TheTechTank
      @TheTechTank  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, man! I'm glad you liked the slightly more in-depth style of review I went for in this video!
      Sucks to hear about your Tiamat v2 dying on you like that after just two years, I'm assuming it's just out of Razer's warranty period too. You might want to bring the wire shorting issue to their attention, they probably already know about it, but they might be inclined to give you a refund or replacement anyway given the circumstances.
      Happy to hear the video addressed some of the questions you had about the headset. I haven't personally experienced any noticeable audio quality degradation from using Type-C over 3.5mm with the one or two I've used. As for the audio control unit, I missed it, but I also didn't miss it. I missed having the ability to toggle switches and turn nobs via a physical unit on the fly, but not being able to do that (except through the software) actually kind of forced me to stay immersed in games rather than obsessing over the smallest tweaks, but maybe that's just me, lol.
      I think the Theta's a major step in the right direction for 7.1 headsets, even though I'm not too pumped about the lack of real subs either. In a perfect world, I'd have this exact setup, with maybe a big sub driver behind the smaller drivers, best of both worlds style. I mean, the ear cups would have to be even bigger than they already are, but I think I'd be more than okay with that 😂

      Indeed a very good review!
      I had a tiamat 7.1 which lasted me about 1,5 years, same issues as you describe. Then I got some asus rog or tuf true 7.1 thing and yep shorting in the wires.
      About 20 years ago I used to have a Speedlink MEDUSA 5.1 with an Aureal 3d EAX audio card and it's pretty unbelievable, but I used to be able to kill with eyes closed in Counter-Strike 1.6b after doing a 180 turn. I had to quit playing... they started listing me as cheater. Bummer but also a good thing cause I was addicted, played non-stop. But long story short; I have not found anything that comes remotely close to the Medusa 5.1/aureal setup and I have tried MANY of cards/headsets.
      I am looking around for a new one and this review doesn't make it clear cut yet :-)

    For anyone wondering how this compares to the ROG Centurion 7.1... It doesn't. I've had the Centurion for a few years and it's had problems but was a great upgrade from the Razer Tiamat 7.1 (not V2) so I was overall pretty happy with it...
    Today, after almost a week, I'm sending back the Theta 7.1 (firmware 0039) because it's an absolute disgrace. Uncomfortable, chunky cables, settings don't carry between devices (so you need Armoury II installed on every device and to set it up each time) and that would only be annoying if it wasn't for the awful tinny speakers that are either distorted or quiet, always lacking the bass of the Centurion.
    They never should have taken out the subs from the Centurion, this, "virtual bass" doesn't work at all. I'm really disappointed. The Centurion has the external DAC which keeps its settings between devices and you actually never need to install the Asus software anywhere because all the controls are on the device itself. Theta has a volume rocker, a mute button and a switch to change between, "phone" and, "PC"...
    At half the price and twice the quality get a Centurion 7.1 or look elsewhere, this was a real disappointment for me. Shame I couldn't find anyone else comparing the two but now I have so here's my feedback.

    I am using ancient Creative Fatal1ty headset for last 10 years - it seems to also only have 40mm driver only in each ear.... so shouldn't the 40mm main drivers in these be the same loudness and bass response? while also having three extra 30mm drivers in each ear? Unless they don't have as big an amp as a standard, single 40mm driver only headset does in each ear. Actually I just noticed they only use 30mm driver for "centre" channel - maybe that's the problem.... anyone into home cinema professionally knows the front three speakers (L, C, R) should be identical to match tone and timbre across front sound-stage. Probably not the bass performance my Sony MDR-HW700DS virtual 9.1 headset does (50mm drivers) for home cinema viewing - those things can physically shake from movie bass - but they did retail at £800 sterling at the time.

    I just picked up a pair of these. The crazy thing that I notice is that Front Centre sounds are actually playing quietly Rear Centre. Which makes whatever is happening in front of me super quiet. I thought it was in my head until I looked in the device settings in Armoury Crate. I clicked on the 7.1 Volume Control and sure enough; in the little diagram that shows the spacial placement of the speakers, Front Centre speaker shows directly behind me and pointing backward away from me, which is what front centre sounds sound like. I don't know if it's something wrong with my install somehow; ASUS support is not available at this hour, so I'll give them a try tomorrow. Meanwhile, back to my faithful old Lucid Sound LS41s. They're a pretty decent, if finicky 5.1 surround headset

    • @stephencameron8118
      @stephencameron8118 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This just in: Asus has pushed a fix for the problem I describe. Now the sound-space sounds right and in game it's actually quite good. In a Surround 5.1 game I can stand next to a waterfall and spin around (in game) and I now know exactly which direction I'm facing. What I particularly like is that with virtual 7.1 turned on, sounds originating above me can be placed. Also the mysterious quietness is gone and sound is consistent; teammates' volume is corrected. If you go into Armoury Crate and play with Reverb and Equalizer (i tweaked Classic and get a good pretty rich sound). I'm now really quite happy with the spacial sound!

    I just picked these up today for my new machine I'm building for Star Citizen. The last pair of actual gaming headsets I used were the Tritton AX360... Yeah. Since those ancient times, I've just been using a pair of Creative in-ear headphones - which are still great, Creative has always made a fantastic product. So hearing about the volume and bass issues made me a little nervous til I realized I've been going without bass at all for years.

    so tell me have you used the 7.1 true strix (same brand)? i know the strix hands down takes out the newer centurion especially with all the complaints for the mic. so how does this one compare to the strix in your opinion ? (i believe the strix also had 5 drivers in each cup )

    • @TheTechTank
      @TheTechTank  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haven't used it before unfortunately, so I can't say for sure. The Strix does indeed have 5 drivers in each ear cup, whereas the Theta 7.1 has 4 in each ear cup with kind of like a virtual sub. I suspect that the Theta 7.1 might be better, just because the Strix is like 5 years old at this point, and the Theta probably has improved hardware. But like I said, can't really say for sure.

    (1) Would this be an upgrade from my Razer headset I have right now?

    Thanks!

    • @TheTechTank
      @TheTechTank  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1: Yes and no. You'd be ditching wireless, Razer's Hypersense haptics, and most likely more balanced audio performance (especially on the bass end), and you'd be getting phenomenal surround sound performance, and exceptional build quality and comfort.
      2: Not as far as I can remember. I believe the profiles only save on PC via the software. But I could be wrong. And on top of that, the official specs page lists this in reference to the PS4: "Using USB-C to USB 2.0 adapter cable" and "note that surround sound is available only on compatible devices". So there's that.
      I personally think you should stick with the Nari Ultimate, unless you really want that boosted 7.1 and love the look and promised comfort of the Theta 7.1.

    Thanks for a great review on Theta 7.1, personally i own Fusion 700 do you think it wise to upgrade to this one for gaming? Majority i use headphone for gaming and looking for something upgrade from Fusion 700, Theta 7.1 / Astro A40 / GSP 600 or other recommendation? FPS actually PUBG is the main one so really don't wanna get jumpscares HAHA.

    • @TheTechTank
      @TheTechTank  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're very welcome! I would personally stick with the Fusion 700 if it's still working fine, at least for another six months or so. But if you're set on upgrading and don't mind the high price, then the Theta 7.1 is a great option for FPS gaming.
      You'll probably still get jumpscared in PUBG when you get sniped from the other side of the map, but if someone tries to sneak up on you, you'll probably hear them long before they get close, lol. I can't guarantee that, since it's been ages since I've played PUBG and I didn't test it, but if the sound design is decent enough now, the Theta might give you a slight edge like I think it did for me in Apex.
      Don't have any experience with Astro products, so can't really say much about that, but the GSP 600 is a great option too if you absolutely have to ditch the Fusion 700. Sennheiser is the god of audio quality.

      @@TheTechTank Just wanna updated my choice; Sennheiser GSP 600. First notice compare to my Fusion 700 is comfort, ear cushion is much comfort to my ears compare to both leather and fabric on Fusion 700. Not sure why but for my small Asian head size that usually play PUBG 4-5 hrs straight, i did not move headphone out to relax my ear that often. For sound i think by itself GSP 600 is really a well-round headphone but after i use it via ROG Throne Qi for DAC it's get better. So i decide to get Sound Blaster X G6 to compare it will Throne Qi, setting both to be exactly the same EQ and i think G6 perform better than Throne Qi. Hopefully i could be with GSP 600 for a while or do you have other suggestion? I've google around and wonder should i try Artics Pro or Beyerdynamic the next step.
      Also i do found Stereo mode on G6 to be efficient than 5.1 or 7.1 personally, not sure why.

    • @TheTechTank
      @TheTechTank  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice! I was considering an upgrade to the GSP 600 back in the day but it was slightly outside my budget. Most of the reviews I've watched about it are really positive, especially when it comes to comfort. The sound is apparently also extremely good. I think it's a really solid choice you made there.
      I would recommend sticking with the GSP 600 for at least a month or two before deciding whether or not to upgrade again. You need about two weeks to really get used to a new set of headphones, in my opinion. That being said, the Arctis Pro (and the included DAC) is to this day the best-sounding headset I've ever tried. Though, to be fair, Brett and the other UFD tech guys at the time didn't like it nearly as much as I did, so maybe my ears aren't to be trusted 😂

    Hey man, thanks for the review that spoke at length about surround sound - it's a shame when a stereophile totally disses the surround component of a headset. Got a few Q's: I have USB C ports on the mobo (ROG Maximus XI Hero), and the Gfx card (2080) - which one is better for these babies? Q2: Was it uncomfy with glasses and these puppies on after hours of gaming? Q3: How do these gentlemen show in the mmsys.cpl on Win10? As a 7.1 device I presume? Grateful for advice! Thanks again.

      Motherboard port is probably shielded better than the port on the 2080, so it should have the least signal interference. • @TheTechTank
      @TheTechTank  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooh... Interesting matchup. I'd say if BASS is a high priority for you, then you probably won't be blown away by the Theta 7.1. I haven't personally tried the Nari Ultimate before, but it should deliver more bass performance, and at $100 cheaper.
      That being said, you might want to look into other options along with those two if you haven't already. Sennheiser, Steelseries, Corsair, Logitech, other ASUS and Razer ones, HyperX, and probably a few others I can't think of right now all make some really great headsets, and a few of them like the Steelseries Arctis Pros offer great bass performance and have great RGB lighting.

      @TheTechTank  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@aliyusuf7877 Lol, I hear you. We all want the best of everything in one single thing, but in this case that's not realistic unfortunately.
      The Theta 7.1 is geared towards people who prioritize the surround sound gaming experience and looks over almost everything else. And in that respect the Nari seems like a more balanced choice.
      Out of all the headsets I've personally tried out (+/- 11 or so), the Steelseries Arctis Pro gave me the best audio quality (largely because of the included DAC), and subjectively looked the best. It also has a really good mic, though not as good as the ones on most of the Sennheiser headsets.
      The ideal headset in this price range would have a Sennheiser mic, Sennheiser drivers, an Arctis Pro DAC, and the looks and build quality of the Theta 7.1, lol.
      Sorry I can't really help you out more here, there's just so much about headsets that is completely subjective, so it's hard to recommend one over all of the others since none of them have the best of everything.

      For other media I disabled 7.1 and virtual surround, used the music preset to start, and the "rock" EQ preset with some minor adjustments, studio reverb (5% or so), bass boost on and turned way up, compressor about 50%, voice clarity about 20%. I think.
      Sorry I couldn't provide any real specifics, I unfortunately have to delete completed video projects about two weeks after they go live for drive space reasons.

      Unfortunately I haven't tried the Centurion before, so it's hard to say. It looks like it has a lot more hardware going for it, but it's also pretty old at this point so that hardware is probably pretty old too... I would really need to try the Centurion to be able to tell whether the newer drivers in the Theta 7.1 are actually better than those in the Centurion. The same almost definitely applies to the mic. I can't imagine mic quality got worse over time from the Centurion to the Theta 7.1. Basically, I think if the Centurion was really AMAZING, then ROG would've just built an updated one rather than the Theta.

Based on what you just said, I'm probably going for the Theta, unless you have another, better headset in mind?

    • @TheTechTank
      @TheTechTank  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Theta's a solid choice, especially if you like the look of it, the surround sound performance in gaming, the mic quality I showed in the vid, and having all the dials in software rather than on a dock or something. Personally, I don't prioritize game audio but rather all-around audio quality and the slightly disappointing bass performance would stop me from getting it. I don't understand your ... diplomatic ways of describing the mics qualtiy on the Theta, and yes, the AI-noise cancellation feature is a pretty neat thing. But there are other solutions available like NV "RTX" Voice (wich works on non RTX-cards, too) or KRISP, that comes with discord now, but also has a standlone client free to download. So while it is nice to have that with the Theta, it is no unique selling point in any way. Sadly, it does not make up for the terrible sound quality of the mic.
    Sorry ASUS, but who in your development department thought it was a good idea to combine a comfortable sourround sound headset with a crapy, cheap shitshow of a mic like that? There is literaly TONS of less expensive but orders of magnitude better headset-mics out there. Ok, if you're soley using it for gaming and want to "enjoy" the illusion of a good 7.1 sourround sound, it will do that. It's just that your clanmates or with whom ever you're communicating will not be thrilled by the sound of that mic.
    Oh, and just a general sidenote about "real" 7.1 headsets with multiple drivers vs. just good stereo headsets and a working sourround software like Dolby Atmos or DTS:
    th-cam.com/video/-_JpAyWMeiQ/w-d-xo.html
    (TL;DR: Actual multi-driver 7.1 sourround headsets SUCK compared to high quality stereo headphones with Atmos or DTS software when it comes to pinpointing audiosources in 3D).

    • @TheTechTank
      @TheTechTank  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for taking the time to actually craft a well-thought-out response to the video, rather than just "you suck, the headset sucks, everything sucks".
      My "diplomatic" views on the mic and the headset as a whole stem from personal experience. While I've experimented with more headsets and mics than most people due to my line of work, I probably haven't even scratched the surface of everything that's out there. This review was my subjective experience of the headset, just like any review fundamentally is. Entirely objective reviews are almost impossible and terribly boring.
      Yes, RTX Voice exists, but it didn't at the time of filming. Yes, other software solutions exist that offer similar functionality. However, not all gaming headsets offer a solution that's baked into the headset itself, and even fewer have an AI-driven one built-in. While I do think it's a cool innovation and worth mentioning in the video as a standout feature (because it technically is), I agree that it did not significantly improve the mic audio quality in my very limited testing. I think I mentioned in the video that it was my first time recording a headset mic through OBS and that I wasn't sure of the best configuration to use, and sure enough that configuration did make the mic sound worse than it normally would in a review (I didn't account for peaking and had the gain set far too high). That's on me. In follow up recordings of the mic I was able to iron out my methodologies, and the mic sounded much better than represented in the video. Again, as I mentioned in the video, not the best I've personally heard, but not even close to the bottom ten I've heard. That being said, I do agree with you that ASUS could have definitely focussed on improving the mic itself, rather than relying on software to make up for it.
      I remember watching that video when it first came out and I agreed wholeheartedly with Linus' conclusions due to my experience with headsets at the time. But, that was before I tried the Theta (or any multiple driver headset for that matter). And to me personally, it did make a real, noticeable difference in certain scenarios, the main one being sound awareness in Apex, and I'm sure with a third-party application it could have been even more noticeable. But, I did try my best to explain in the video that this might be a VERY subjective thing, and that I can't guarantee the same results for anyone other than myself.
      Basically, again, this was a very subjective review and as Linus states at the end of that video, audio is an objective experience, which is why I also encouraged viewers to try it out if possible before they consider picking it up.
      Anyway, I really do appreciate your honest feedback and calling things out that you perceive as possibly problematic. It keeps me on my toes and in so doing improves future videos on the channel.

      @@TheTechTank
      Oh, thanks for youre time to respond to my response in return, i realy didn't expect that. And if i came across a bit emotional in my post i apologise. There is a reason for that: the last few days i was on the suffering end of that microphone. One of my mates got the Theta and just wouldn't stop boasting how great it is, while everyone else in voice (including me) told him he sounded like talking through a tincan. His previous Headset was some older SteelSeries, and the mic on that sounded alot better. That was the reason i was looking up tests of the Theta, to get an idea of what he bought there. Sorry for this remark, but had i known what he paid for it earlier, i would probably have laughed even harder at him for how the mic sounds. (We're all used to beeing straight foreward with each other and teasing and taunting). I don't doubt that the sound of the Thetas headphones is great, even though multi-driver headphones tend to miss a bit of oomph. That said i myself prefer a neutral monitor or reference style audio characteristic over the usual bathtub-sound of many gaming products. But man that mic ... okok, i'll stop lamenting over it now :D My mate was a semi-decent shooter gamer up until now ... let's see if the 7.1 sound of the Theta improoves his situational awareness ... i have my doubts though.
      Another note on all of these AI (or rather shader algorythm) based noise filters: they all work by analysing the audio stream and not just filtering white noise or certain frequencies, but they cut out all sounds that don't match the algorythms identifiers for human voice. Of course this isn't 100% perfect, no matter which product you use. Thats why you sometimes still hear a tiny amount of the sourrounding noise OR it sometimes even clips little pieces of the voice or some syllables if a person doesn't speak clearly. None of them actually change, amplify or equalise the voice to make up for bad microphones though. This makes Asus decision on using such a low quality mic even more odd, as those de-noise algorythms are all more efficient the better the quality of the recorded voice is ....

      Always happy to respond to people who put some effort into their comments, lol. You actually came across fine, and made a great argument. I especially enjoyed your rant directed at ASUS 😂
      Your friend group sounds like riot - can only imagine all the shit talk and friendly ridicule that goes on.
      I actually share your preference for more neutral, balanced, "studio" audio. My system is used for gaming 20% of the time and 80% of the time for everything else including work, so getting a headset optimized for that 20% alone doesn't make any kind of sense to me. Would also love to see whether your friend improves at all due to the headset, I really want it to not have just been my imagination, lol.
      I'm actually experimenting with various noise filtering software right now, as I really want to start streaming on the side soon. Thanks to Canon's new software I can use my M50 as my main cam, and I actually figured out how to get my Rode Smartlav+ that I use for filming to work with OBS too after way too much experimentation. The mic sounds SO much better than the one on my Arctis 5, but I plan on having a loud fan running while I stream, so I'm seeing whether I can cut that noise out without sacrificing voice clarity.

    I have been using these for more than a year. They are the best for directional sound. Nothing else on the PC market even comes close. I have really good Sennheiser 650 open back stereo cans. While the sound quality is better on the Senns, the directional sound is not. In COD, I literally can find someone by their footsteps. I have been accused of hacking many times. I am going to get the wireless version. These are a little fragile. The plastic on the interior of the steel band cracked. I don't care about that with how well they work in matches. If you are a bass head, don't get these. They have some bass, but not enough to impress people used to Beats. The sound quality is a bit better than average. If you prefer sound quality, some amped audiophile headphones is the way to go with a separate mic.

      Everything you just said is what I said in the video, and I even praised it for being decent all around as well as primarily being exceptional for gaming. Also, what's with this self-righteous bullshit? "Oh holy smart one", and "don't deserve to review it"? LOL. I'd love to see your review. Drop me a link here when you finish it.

    with that price you can get Sennheiser HD 6xx and with that headphone you can hear even the foot steps of God, these so called "gaming headphones" are not worth of there price for experience, so stop wasting your money on rubbish things.

      Lol, definitely still a big argument to be made for sticking with wires, sound quality, no need to charge etc.

      @@TheTechTank you don't need to charge it but if its plugged into your controller it will make your controller die faster. if its plugged into your console/pc that's just more annoying wires. its 2021 we should have the same quality sound wireless as well as phone apps to customize the headset not just for pc either but all gaming headsets!!

      Wireless quality has gotten extremely good over the years, but unfortunately it'll always be a minor step down from wired (not big enough for normal people like us to really notice though).

    If it's Rog, it can only be overpriced garbage! The mic sounds like absolute sh!t on wireless money grab!
    Here is my personal experience: rog claymore costs an arm and a leg, died in less than 6months of use.
    rog centurion7.1, died after 1 year of use. Premium headset with a sh!t mic!
    rog spatha, hasn't died on me yet, but everytime it goes into sleeping mode, it never wakes up!
    rog maximus vii formula, hasn't died yet, but the display on the mobo will post random numbers from time to time.
    Stay away from rog. Asus used to make solid products, now it is nothing but a money grab.

      Ah, I see. Well, the best thing you can do in the future is vote with your wallet and go with a different brand then. If enough people do that, companies will be forced to improve their quality control.
