Dear Sarah, Hi, I'm a new subscriber. Your Croatian is amazing. The language is difficult even for many Croats. Never stop patting yourself on the back for that. And your family is adorable, I love how they all support what you do. I'd just edit the title of this a tiny bit because this applies more to TRADITIONAL homes. Older people, rural areas, etc. The population is 90% Catholic only on paper. In recent years, more and more people stray away from the Church and live in more modern homes, so you won't find crucifixes and stickers with saints in every home and the calendars/namedays aren't a huge thing either. I can't wait to see what you do next and thanks for loving our homeland as your own (I mean, it IS your homeland now too lol).
Također, iskreno čestitam. Svi ste super.Toliko ste simpatični, prilagodljivi, tolerantni. Toliko poštujete svoje ali i tuđe. Ma, Sarah pa Vi ste NAŠI!❤️👍
If I didn’t know better, I would have thought this video was taken in my home! 😉 We have each and every of those things too! So, very well observed, thank you! Živjeli!
Yup. Had every single one of those growing up. And when we moved to the US from Zagreb 50 years ago, we brought the blankets, except ours were red and black. They lasted for DECADES!
our household in Australia is Irish Croatian. I can't believe that we got all what you mentioned as a Croatian household. But you missed on sarma, blitva, rastan - frozen of course . Love your blogs and your devotion to Croatia. My husband adores country but is far from your Croatian language commands.
Alen Boksic was also my favourite and I have the same shirt! Great videos. It would be nice with a video with other typhical Croatian stuff, like don’t sit close to the window because of propuh, or that every kid brings pašteta to school 🤣. Grettings from Sweden.
Yeah, that's pretty accurate. Even as Croats living in Ireland we have most of these in our house, down to the 40 year old blanket my baka gave me and the lace decor she made herself. My mom even has a lace of a crucifix baka made framed and on the wall (2 in 1 😅) in her house.
Some of these items you can find in Azerbaijan houses too.. slippers, old school thermometers, blankets, (we also use ice cream boxes to put pins, tools, needls😄😄😄)..well done Croatian people that, still can keep their spiritual values..
Thank you for sharing this. I love Croatia and cannot wait to visit again (after Covid). I am living in Greece and most of these items are also found in a Greek household.Tip: if your coffee pots have a narrowd brim, the coffee will have a nice foam on it. We call the Turkish coffee Greek coffee... but neither is correct because it is actually of Arab origin. Pleased to see all your video's and so good to see your MIL is participating.
Yes, coffee is of Arabic origin (Yemen) yet called Turkish because the Turks propagated it throughout the entire Ottoman empire yet mostly drank tea themselves. Greece and Croatia are the heaven of the Mediterranean 🌎

I am Albanian and I can relate to a lot of things in the video: coffee pots (xhezve) thermometer, blankets, slippers, extra cookies for guests, rakija, calendar. I think Balkan countries have the same traditions.
yes, this applies to most Balkan countries. We have very similar and even intermixed cultures. This is why I say Hungarians, Albanians and Romanians are honorary Slavs.
That most Croats have these things in their house. My personal favorite is the cross that my father hand-carved, a wicker basket and bedding from my great-grandmother 70 years old. I keep these things special and one day my children will inherit them
In Istra we have domestic Orahovac. It is made of unripe walnuts dissolved in rakija (rakiya) for 40 day, out of the house on the sun. People use it as drink for guests, and medicine for tummy (if it hurts).

As an architect and designer, Dida's "not so well aligned" last sticker is poking my eyes. I almost tried to fix it on my computer screen 😂 PS: I replace everything salt with vegeta - even use it in my salads
One addition...sandwich presses. People may not have a toaster like almost everyone in North America, but I have found these presses the press is pretty ubiquitous in Croatian homes.
Thank you for making this video. It feels like walking through my parent’s house. The thing with those blankets, they really are the warmest. I remember buying some nicer looking ones at Indigo in Canada and they function was almost cosmetic, so I went back to the old-school ones. They don’t match anything in my house, but when I’m cold, I know what does the job.
Thanks so much! Yes I know - that's the only problem with the blankets - the colour/style. lol I'm sure they were super stylish back in the day, but unfortunately they don't really go with a more modern home design. It doesn't even matter though...they're worth keeping around anyway! They can't be beat!

The slippers are because most houses have tiles and they get pretty cold in the winter. Even today some houses have no heating, especially at the sea. So socks in slippers make sense😂
The Lace Decor cracked me up, so true 😂😂😂!. That, along with most items in here, especially the foods, will be found across most households in the former Yugoslavia. I use Vegeta in lieu of salt in pretty much anything that is boiled or fried lol.
You could be talking about Italy LOL! slippers (because ceramic tiles are cold!), "grappa", a super strong liquor very similar to Croatian rakija, the priest who blesses the house once a year, speck (typical of the Italian region of Sud Tyrol), the love for coffee (every Italian house has different sizes of "moka" to make Italian coffee), calendars with the saint of the day marked on them, lace (my mom made doilies for all my wedding guests and we used them as favors, and I also have a full tablecloth made by my great-aunt)... And of course the love for soccer :D After all Istria was Italian until not that long ago, our cultures are so interlocked!
I absolutely love this video, almost as much as the other ones too 😄 as a Croatian living abroad, being able to see this traditional foods, items and culture of my people is special, and brings back the memories.
Bravo za kanadsku nevjestu koja voli svoju novu domovinu i Bravo za čitavu njenu obitelj!
Love it!!! And yes, they were made to last!! They'll last 100 years, easily!! lol
Najbolji YT kanal ikada! Hvala ti ❤
Hvala!! :)
Croatian from Melbourne, Australia here! Hello there!
Hello from Zagreb!!
our household in Australia is Irish Croatian. I can't believe that we got all what you mentioned as a Croatian household. But you missed on sarma, blitva, rastan - frozen of course . Love your blogs and your devotion to Croatia. My husband adores country but is far from your Croatian language commands.
My family doesn’t drink rakija but we always have it in the house and use it for muscle pain, period pain, toothaches etc
Alen Boksic was also my favourite and I have the same shirt! Great videos. It would be nice with a video with other typhical Croatian stuff, like don’t sit close to the window because of propuh, or that every kid brings pašteta to school 🤣. Grettings from Sweden.
Check out our video Don't do this in Croatia. You will like it :)
Everything is correct. U Slavoniji je možda dominantan džem od kajsija (apricot)
:)
Super ste obitelj..i stvarno odlicno pričaš hrvatski.😃🥂budite veseli i zdravi, lip pozdrav iz Trogira
Puno hvala!! Veliki pozdrav iz Zagreba : )
Hahaha :) I said it before Turkish cofee is the best, and "vegeta" goes in everything :) easy with the rakija though :)
I am german born Croatian and we still have like 80% of these things at home, I didnt even know they are so common 😂
:D
I am croatian living in London I found Šipak marmalade recently , o what 😂 joy!
:D
Rakija is universal. It's a medicine, it's a drink, it can be used for everything.
Absolutely!
Even a fuel to old Lada Niva😅😅😁
Some of these items you can find in Azerbaijan houses too.. slippers, old school thermometers, blankets, (we also use ice cream boxes to put pins, tools, needls😄😄😄)..well done Croatian people that, still can keep their spiritual values..
Thank you! Appreciation from Croatia 😊
True. My bf is Croatian and been to Croatia 2 times. I see almost all of the things in the vid in his house, his family and relatives. 😄
Glad you can relate! :)
Ohhh, that's interesting about the coffee pots!! That's why they all have the thinner top rim! Thanks for that tip!
Yes, coffee is of Arabic origin (Yemen) yet called Turkish because the Turks propagated it throughout the entire Ottoman empire yet mostly drank tea themselves.
Greece and Croatia are the heaven of the Mediterranean 🌎
I live in the US and I still have almost all those things here. :)
I can confirm it is all true!
We use rakija for cleaning windows and lowering temperature when you have flu or something like that
Oh yes, you're right!! It works great for windows and for other general cleaning purposes! :)
@@RoyalCroatianTours Since 2020 also for cleaning hands because of Covid19 😁
@@stipe3124 Haha, yes of course!! There were a few memes going around a while back, showing people disinfecting with Rakija :)
hahaha you totally got me with blessing stickers!!! Im a Croat and whenever I go to my grandmas place, there are at least 40 of them on the door
lol Love that!
I think most Slavs homes have same staff at home 🤗
Svako ko zivi na prostorima bivse nam ljepe Juge ima sve te stvari u kuci.Ja sam Makedonka I skoro sve to imam ovdje u Americi.😍

I have been binge watching your videos and absolutely loving them. I’m so happy I stumbled across them, as they are absolutely spot on.
Really love seeing and getting to know your entire family, including your in-laws. As a Canadian Croatian myself, we are raising my five year old son to be fluent in English, French and of course Croatian. It has been truly a remarkable journey so far. And I love seeing William, my son, speaking fluently in Croatian to his locker and really love seeing and getting to know your entire family, including your in-laws. As a Canadian Croatian myself, we are raising my five year old son to be fluent in English, French and of course Croatian. It has been truly a remarkable journey so far. And I love seeing William, my son, speaking fluently in Croatian to his Baka and Dida. He has gotten so good that occasionally I have to ask him to translate a word!
Now back to your video. One thing every Croatian home absolutely has in spades is lard! Preferably homemade.
Now I am heading back to continue binge watching your videos.
Bye for now!
First people came, and then the borders, thankfully our tradition is stronger than the borders that is why we, here, Balkan, are all the same.❤
That most Croats have these things in their house. My personal favorite is the cross that my father hand-carved, a wicker basket and bedding from my great-grandmother 70 years old. I keep these things special and one day my children will inherit them
Wow, those are definitely some special heirlooms you have!!
Croatia is beautiful. ❤️💙🖤🤍
All those things are so similiar to the ones you can find in Polish home! thank you for another interesting video, pozdrav :)
My pleasure 😊 Glad you enjoyed!
In Istra we have domestic Orahovac. It is made of unripe walnuts dissolved in rakija (rakiya) for 40 day, out of the house on the sun. People use it as drink for guests, and medicine for tummy (if it hurts).
No to je već neka druga priča, a neću naravno o uhljebima i politici ... uglavnom: keep on with a great job 💪 You're doing and, btw, all of those 15 items mentioned in this video, we have them all in our home 😂. Bravo!! 👏
Ili se kaže "carry on" a ne "keep on".... 🤔
Awww, hvala puno na prekrasnim rijecima!! :) Pozdrav iz Zagreba :)
You forgot to mention that Vegeta was invented in Croatia!
In the Podravka factory!
Otvorim frižider kad tamo kantica Eurocrema. Obradujem se. Otvorim kanticu kad unutra čvarci. Još više se obradujem. 😂😂😂
lol
Wahahah car
Ako na boci coca -cole vidiš čep od fante, onda je unutra rakija!
Google translate does not say Croatian bacon is called spek. Says that is Dutch. Im very confused. Can anyone help why she is calling this spek instead of Slanina??? My Croatian friend has never heard of spek?????

Hi Sarah and Ivan! Could you do a more in depth video about Cavtat? Including parking for the older and newer sides of the city. Nice areas to go into the sea and relax. Transportation, is it always needed? Our there tours to Medjegorje? Thank you for all your videos I enjoy them quite a bit!

istina....u životu nisam ni jaja ispekao na ulju.samo i isključivo mast za kuhanje a ulje na salatu
As an architect and designer, Dida's "not so well aligned" last sticker is poking my eyes. I almost tried to fix it on my computer screen 😂 PS: I replace everything salt with vegeta - even use it in my salads
Pozdrav iz Vukovara, moja je baka radila deke u Vuteksu😁
Stvarno su kvalitetne deke!! Pozdrav iz Zagreba! :)
One addition...sandwich presses. People may not have a toaster like almost everyone in North America, but I have found these presses the press is pretty ubiquitous in Croatian homes.
That's true! Many people do have them!
Everything you said is right! Greetings from Zagreb
Thanks!! Lp from Zagreb, too :)
I had every single one of those things in my household, and I didn’t even grow up in Croatia. 😁

Hvala!! Veliki pozdrav iz Zagreba! :)
As a Croat living in Germany, I confess I don't get along without following things:
- Crucifix on the wall (important and might come in handy with the garlic xD)
-- Hrvatski jersey (obavezno)
- Vegeta - impossible to eat anything without it
- Minas kava i đezbe
- Ručni mlin za kavu i električni mlin za kavu - nice to have
- Špek i bijeli luk češnjak
- domaći kolači sa orasima
- Šipkov čaj, marmelada od šipka
Zaboravili ste vrecicu u kojoj stoje druge vrecice 😁
... a u špajzi uredno složene papirnate vrećice i druga ambalaža u papirnatoj vrećici koje je iza WW2 slagala baka

Wow! Having lived in 4 different counrties, I ultimately settled for Portugal. And... guess what.... except for the rosehips.....one will find the same customs and items in Portuguese homes. Amazing!

The slippers are because most houses have tiles and they get pretty cold in the winter. Even today some houses have no heating, especially at the sea. So socks in slippers make sense😂
Subscribed.. 🙌
Great to have you! ☺️
The Lace Decor cracked me up, so true 😂😂😂!. That, along with most items in here, especially the foods, will be found across most households in the former Yugoslavia. I use Vegeta in lieu of salt in pretty much anything that is boiled or fried lol.
Haha, thanks Zoran!! I also use Vegeta in so many things... Now I don't even know how I ever cooked without it!! lol
Heap of sand somewhere around the house if you have urgent cementing to do.
I would have said plum jam. Lol. Great video.
Yes! Equally popular (maybe the plum is even more common, actually!)
Plum jam--especially if you are from Lika !
Yep....PLUM PEKMEZ
