A perfect example of the axiom "Altitude is my friend!" So many of these engine-out videos wind in either hard landings or putting down in dangerous areas due to lack of altitude at the time of failure. Well done!

ya man! i was attempting to reach the celing of 6k feet when it quit...it was also very cold..most flights im around 2k feet..

Firstly, great video, great job and thanks for posting...Would engine failure at 2k' have been a more challenging factor? And I see comments on blade count. With your experience, do you believe extra blades on your prop led to engine failure?
      Thanks!,

Thank You, Wow good questions..well after talking to ultra prop the 4 blade is fine but the pitch was off..i have a new prop with spinner kit on the way. Yes if i was lower it could have been tough to get back to the field. most traffic in my area stays around 2k feet and pattern alt is around 800..at the end of the vid i was still to high but i nosed down to get some speed just to make sure id make it. my spitfire is slow and will get pushed around in the wind. im hoping to be in the air soon.

I flew a Phantom X1 for several years.
One nice thing about these little planes is the fact that we can land them safely a lot more places than a GA plane could ever get away with.
I have set my plane down in some pretty odd places.
Was the engine out because of high temps due to the long climb?
Here in the SoCal high desert, we set our carbs so the Rotax never exceed 185 degrees on climb out to keep from having temp issues. A bit less power but longer engine life.

I hope you realize it is a motorless glider in the first place and they just added the motor so you wouldn't have to find a high cliff! The landing area and time would be the only issue but still not scary!

One is supposed to stay calm through all emergencies, no matter what. Staying calm in an emergency maximises the chances for a favourable outcome of the situation. You can train yourself to stay calm through any situation quite easily. There are self help aids on TH-cam to teach the technique of staying calm through all possible emergencies that are quite useful. I am certain I can stay calm through absolutely any emergency, whether I believe the outcome will be positive or not. Anybody can do it.

    • @indridcold8433
      @indridcold8433 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@reverse thrust I must stay very calm indeed, and will do so. Maintaining calmness is especially important when bitten by a venomous animal. The slower the heart rate, the slower the venom will spread throughout your circulatory system. Anybody in a panic, with have an elevated heart rate. The panicked person will die much sooner than a person that maintains calm. I have learned to stay calm through anything. It is not a difficult technique to learn. You should always be in full control of your emotions. Never allow your emotions to be in control of you. Your emotions are sourced from the
amygdala, a very primitive part of your brain. If a primitive portion of your brain is controlling you the chances for a favourable outcome of an emergency situation is extremely low. All this can be studied in further detail where you find how to learn the technique of remaining calm through any situation.

This was great fun to watch as it is always a treat to watch someone who knows what he is doing and knows his craft well enough not to get crazy. I liked the fact that when the engine quit he continued the flight as a glider instead of just circling down and landing.
Makes me wonder what the glide ratio is on these (that) plane.

Like chaspfrank said, "Altitude is my friend". I often practice deadsick landings from 1000 ft., or so. I kill the engine, flip switch back to ON, ready to restart, if I necessary. It's great practice. I was surprised by how much difference there is between 'power back', and 'power off'. An idling prop gives more push than you'd think, noticeable difference.

Firstly, after you hit the kill switch we can see you pulling back on the stick to slow down and make sure the prop stops. Secondly, too bad your good training didn’t include attempting to restart the engine. Im so glad you survived that harrowing experience (that you no doubt practiced before) of gliding down from 4000ft to land in a perfectly manicured field. Shock cooling your engine like that is gonna give you a real surprise in the future. Be careful.

Oh, c'mon. Most ultralights are.such efficient gliders, engine failure is more of an inconvenience than an actual emergency.

@@MrRiprip56 You don't have to be a pilot of anything more than a kite to watch an ultralight descending out of 4000 ft to a smooth landing on a grass strip over an interval of nearly seven minutes and know that an unpowered descent in such an aircraft as the one featured in this clip likely presented the pilot with little more difficulty than that experienced by you average glider enthusiast.

Congrats on the nice save! Did the starter fail as well? Presumably the first thing you tried was to re-start the engine?

The breather tube on the carb that broke on the front side..i was told that the positive air presure could have stoped the fuel from entering the bowl..after i landed i primed the carb and it re started first pull..

Ah, that makes sense. I have fuel tubes attached to my breather ports, and they run straight down. I will have to remember never to mount them so they face forward.

So what happened to the engine? Did you run out of gas? How did you get it out of that field? Do you need a pilots license to fly that ultralight? How many hours do you have? Where was your intended spot to land if your engine did not quit? How much did that ultralight set you back?

  • @jackfrost2146

If my ultralight engine stops at 40 ft. or 400 ft, I don't worry, I always keep a safe easy landing site in range. I like to stay alive so that I can fly some more.

With an ultralight, I'd imagine your glide ratio would be high. Why not enjoy the quiet and then fire up near landing. Unless you're trying to get somewhere, that is.

Excellent aviating. What instrumentation is in your aircraft?
What is the procedure if you have to land at a GA airport and you do not have a radio?
My Private Certificate expired many years ago. I would love to have an untralight to be back in the air again.

Pretty flight but don't ever use an active taxi way to take off with even with a quicksilver. One thing it's not safe but for another if there's an FAA guy anywhere close hes got your number. The walls have ears.

I'm not convinced that this was a staged engine out. That's OK, lots of these are staged. That field in which the landing took place look awfully like a "turf runway."Was still a good video. Thanks.

Didn't realize ultralights could fly in class E airspace. Or do you have to ask ATC? Anyway, nice off-field landing.
