  • Hi all, In toady’s video I’m spotlighting the Phalaenopsis Violacea orchid. The specific one I have is the Indigo variation. This is a nice easy to grow species. The bloom is lovely, long lasting and is quite fragrant. I find that this orchid does well in my indoor conditions in New York City with sphagnum moss. It’s grown in moderate light, and keep the medium moist. It does not like to dry out.
    If you can get your hands on this one, I highly recommend it! These can be on the pricier side, so I highly recommend getting a seedling as they tend to bloom quite young. In addition to the fragrance, another plus is that this orchid is a sequential bloomer, it constantly blooms all year. This is a joy to grow.

    Growing Conditions & Climate:
    Almost all orchids grown indoors
    Eastern Exposures (4-5 hours direct early morning sun) & LED Grow Lights
    - Most orchids grow under the lights
    - Only cool growers & orchids in bloom grow under my Eastern facing windows
    - Grow space doesn’t get any additional sunlight other than the LED’s
    Zone 7a - Humid Subtropical

    Hi Nicole I too have the Var Indigo. I tell EVERYONE get this orchid! It smells like the frootloops of Bellina with a cinnamon tone too! It's great! Mine has started its 3rd spike. Only 1 spike has blooms now. Mine is an 4 year old plant. It's big.

    I don’t have that orchid, but it sure is pretty. I had Phalaenopsis Bellina but unfortunately I lost it. So I replaced her with Phalaenopsis Cornu cervi Spotted Leopard. It’s native to Thailand. So far it’s doing beautiful. Thanks for sharing a great video.🤗🌸🥰

    Hi Nicole, I have a phalaenopsis princess kaiulani which is an offspring of violacea I believe. Currently it has 3 opened flowers with more coming. I have bought a set of shelving like yours and use shallow wet trays to keep the humidity at 50%. It’s a big improvement over my previous setup of fan and mister. Thanks for this interesting and informative video Nicole.

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen the princess kauliani and it's gorgeous!! I believe it might have amboinensis in it as well, but I could be mistaken. Your setup sounds great!! Especially as you head into winter you'll be able to maintain better conditions. Thanks so much for dropping by 🤠

    I have an itty bitty seedling, I don't expect to see blooms on it for a couple of years. I'm a little bummed because my Phal schilleriana got stem rot and I had to pitch it. Not entirely sure how it happened and not entirely sure I want to replace it either.

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm on the opposite spectrum as you, I have an itty bitty schilleriana seedling. I can't wait for it to grow. Though I understand, once you have one, it's sort of like "been there" if it wasn't truly special or had an unforgettable fragrance.

    • @michaelmccarthy4077
      @michaelmccarthy4077 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NicoleDeanna It was a nice plant. The blooms were a bit undersized and the fragrance wasn't what I expected, but they were pretty and the leaves were nice. It was a bit of a space hog, I probably should have mounted it and stuck it outside. Although I think Todd's perished growing that way.

      @@NicoleDeannadid you say you would NOT use a heat map for this orchid? Is that because you have it in moss? Seems like it would benefit from a winter heat map for me here in the Seattle area.

      I stopped using heat mats because I found that the heat from the grow lights was plenty heat and my temps indoors are pretty warm, but if your temps are cooler, I say go for it, it will only help since these like it warm / hot @@rustystork7477
