Hi Cap'n Cake, I really like that comment! You bring up a good point I had never really thought of before! Forrest Gump is such an inspirational movie, and I quote it all the time. I actually posted a video on my channel 6 days ago that is almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. I disagree. I think he does have PTSD. When he's talking about the ambush and Bubba, he ends the story by saying, "Bubba wanted to be a fishin' boat captain, but instead he died right there by that lake in Vietnam..." and the scene ends and the sound of helicopters echo out as the camera transitions from Vietnam to Forrest at the bus stop bench slowly looking up towards the heavens and then Forrest says in kind of a low, sad voice, "...and that's all I have to say about that..." If you talk to vets that have PTSD Forrest is there with imagining the sounds and re-living the moment and it takes him a bit to snap out of it and come back to reality (see below). Then the man listening to the story says, "I betcha it was a bullet!" and that snaps Forrest out of it and Forrest goes, "a bullet...?" and the man says, "that jumped up and bit ya!" and then Forrest is back with us and he says, "oh, yes, sir. @Goo Hammer Or that his name is Texas but everyone shortened it to Tex, but he is actually from a random place (California maybe) but Forrest doesn't remember because they shortened the name. Or he could just be from Texas
Let's be honest guys. The Vietnam war had the best soundtrack, best rifle, and best uniforms. Everything except the honor and dignity given to those by the veterans.
I agree with everything you said except the thing about the rifle. Unless you mean the AK... The m16 was a notoriously unreliable weapon. There's a reason the AK is still in rotation and the m16 was practically phased out by the end of this conflict.
"I got to see allot of the countryside, we'd take these really long walks" I did exactly the same on my tours of duty along the border of Northen Ireland.
I would bet that Roman "Miles" (Roman Soldiers) 2,000 Years ago did that too. Back in the mid-80's when I was a Paratrooper, my buddies and I did that for the same dang reason! "If It Ain't Rain'n, It Ain't Train'n!" It also seems to Rain a Lot in most wars too! In Iraq, The "Fertile Cresent" it rained more than most people in the USA realize. More than one it rained Mud! (storms coming out of the east or south, deserts, sometimes had enough sand and/or soil) It was raining Gritty MUD!
@Simon Lu. "The best thing about Vietnam, was there was always some place to go. And there was always something to do." "I got to see a lot of the countryside." Most soldiers would tell you about the horrors, discomfort, and tragedy of the Vietnam war, but Forrest recounts it with a childlike optimism. He's a kind soul, and he does possess some wisdom and general aptitude, which is laudable, but the things he's saying are silly and they're supposed to be.
People aren't born trash, but we can be made that way from growing up in an unloved environment. This is particularly true for fathers and daughters. If her dad is a jackass, she will tend to seek out men like him, even though it defies common sense
"what did she ever do for Gump?" ...besides be his friend when no one else would. It's not like she didn't have a whole host of family problems so I guess we can cut her some slack, eh?
I met up with some of these guys in the China Fleet Club (1968) in Hong Kong when I was on R & R (Rest and Recuperation) from duties on the Chinese border in the Northern Territories - Kowloon (I'm from UK - they were on R & R from the war in Vietnam). Some of the horror stories they would relate were horrendous. I did have a good rapport with one American in particular. I recall he was from the 101st Airborne (I was UK 2 Para - so we had something in common) - alas nothing ever came of our short-lived friendship. I often wonder if he survived that war.
The way he says we were always looking for this guy named Charlie always made me laugh, he's so nicely positive that even Vietnam couldn't change how good and simple he was the perfect example of ignorance is bliss.
I have seen this movie for the first time when I was 11 and only now came across it again and thought about it. I didn't understand it back then and I don't know if it is directly mentioned in the Movie, but now I realised, Forest was part of the Project 100,000. Knowing this historical fact makes the movie even sadder then before.
whoever did the wardrobe for the Vietnam scene was spot on. The uniform and gear is authentic looking for that era. Forrest is to big to be a tunnel rat, they usually picked the shortest, skinniest soldier to do that. Anyone the size of Forrest (Tom Hanks) would get stuck in the tunnel.
I swear, every time I watch this, I appreciate more and more of it. I never caught the humor of Forest saying Lt Dan got funny feelings about a rock, a tree or a trail or the road.. And then you see Dan crawling on the road, and in forest's mind, he's just staring at the road lol.
So I was thinking about this... I wonder if Forrest asked them where they were from after hearing their name and, because he’s gullible they made up places even though it was obvious, and he took it as the gospel.
Forrest talking about Vietnam was the same way my Grandfather talked about WW2. The way the man talked about his time was that it was either hot or cold, and I swear he slept through the damn thing.
1960: We are looking for a guy named charlie to eliminate 2000s: We are looking for a guy named Mohammed to apologise to because we arrested him for raping our women and children Nothing has changed apart from this politically correct bullshit that basically makes anyone is isn't white exempt from the rules
Nope. Those birth control glass makes everyone who wears them look the same, but that ain't the same actor. That actor is Aaron Izbiki. The guy who played Cowboy in FMJ was Arliss Howard.
"And we were always looking for this guy named Charlie" I died on the floor laughing...XD For those of you who don't know, during the Vietnam War, the Americans gave a code name for the Communists, Charlie (cuz theirs a 'C' at the front, so they just decided to give it an English name). The Viet Cong (VC for short) is code named "Victor Charlie" by platoon squads, searching around the fields and jungles. It is basically "Military Language".
My father's walks mostly involved squeezing through the woods, lying down when loud engine's noise was heard, eating half a fist of rice a day, sleep in the mud and munch on tree barks. If you think only the Marine's fear traps and ambushes, wait till you hear the friendly fire and green berets stories. Military conscription is tough, everywhere.
Fact: Before Vietnam War this guy also landed in Normandy and saved Pvt. RYAN.
Also another fact,
Forrest is bulletproof.
Then after he survived on a island
Before dday he was a convoy escort captain
After he returned to the US he tried to land on the moon but failed, and Lt. Dan had to save his ass.
Also he was a captain in a submarine

@Goo Hammer Or that his name is Texas but everyone shortened it to Tex, but he is actually from a random place (California maybe) but Forrest doesn't remember because they shortened the name.
Or he could just be from Texas
I think this is the quietest video I've ever come across on TH-cam
Let's be honest guys. The Vietnam war had the best soundtrack, best rifle, and best uniforms. Everything except the honor and dignity given to those by the veterans.
I agree with everything you said except the thing about the rifle. Unless you mean the AK... The m16 was a notoriously unreliable weapon. There's a reason the AK is still in rotation and the m16 was practically phased out by the end of this conflict.
"I got to see allot of the countryside, we'd take these really long walks"
I did exactly the same on my tours of duty along the border of Northen Ireland.
Bubbas idea to lean on each other's backs is legit useful, done it countless times after seeing the film as a kid.
@@paladinsix9285 fuck that mudrain, I would asphyxiate on the wind.
The soundtrack for this movie is incredible
My uncle upon seeing this: "Yeah, *takes a sip from his bourbon* I remember doing that shit"
Thank him for his services
My uncle Jesse served in Vietnam too, craziest tough sob I ever knew
Glad for the subtitles, since YOU HAD THE VOLUME SET AT 1.2!
So sorry for him sending those letters. So naive.
Gave him hope, got him through the Nam. At least he did not get one of those "Dear Forrest" type letters back.

@Simon Lu. Have you seen the movie?
Yeah, Charlie would never have heard the Lt telling them to shut-up.
I cried when I saw the unpaid love with Forest and Jenny. He was in war and she having fun with hippie. Just poignant, poor Forest.
As a Vietnamese I can approve that everything that man describe in this Video is true except for the first part when they get down and shut up

Jenny is trash, what did she ever do for Gump?
Nah, it's the friendship between Bubba and Gump that matters.
Bros before hoes
Oh well, at least she came around.
Gave him a child
I remember watching this as a kid and being so disappointed not being able to find out where Tex was from as he was introducing everyone 😂🤦
The amount of good music in this movie
I hope one day we get a movie covering the 90's and our present like this movie. Something spanning 4 decades a real historical treat
The rain stopped, and *nothing else happened after that.*
I love that. "We'd take these real long walks..." yeah it's called doing a patrol. lol
whoever did the wardrobe for the Vietnam scene was spot on.
Anyone else was wondering why the guy from Phoenix called Dallas, and the other from Detroit called Cleveland?
So I was thinking about this...
I wonder if Forrest asked them where they were from after hearing their name and, because he’s gullible they made up places even though it was obvious, and he took it as the gospel.
@@throwinemback Both are legitimate surnames. Cities are usually named after someone anyway...

Forrest talking about Vietnam was the same way my Grandfather talked about WW2. The way the man talked about his time was that it was either hot or cold, and I swear he slept through the damn thing.
0:13 it crazy how beautiful Vietnam actually is with the flat land and some mountains in the background. (Excluding the smoke)
The Vietnam scenes were filmed in South Carolina...

furrysega7 haha you're right
Nope. Those birth control glass makes everyone who wears them look the same, but that ain't the same actor. That actor is Aaron Izbiki. The guy who played Cowboy in FMJ was Arliss Howard.
Plus, Pvt Cowboy is in the Marines, while Gump's unit in an Army unit.
furrysega7 that whole name sequence was from fmj. This movie is a parody of many movies.
AlexSDU there were many mixed units in vietnam.
Beautifully narrated, as well as the acting.
I love how he started whispering when he is talking about everyone in his platoon. And how everyone was not from where their name said.
And then it was 120° and 100% humidity. And we all wished the rain would come back lol.
I just now noticed the LAW rocket launcher on Forrest's back
In the book he said he was the biggest guy there so he was carrying extra water ammo food etc
Why would they trust him with any explosives

🤣🤣🤣 I love this movie.
This movie has so many, well, beautiful scenes that it reaches to the core of one’s heart...
"And we were always looking for this guy named Charlie"
I died on the floor laughing...XD
For those of you who don't know, during the Vietnam War, the Americans gave a code name for the Communists, Charlie (cuz theirs a 'C' at the front, so they just decided to give it an English name). The Viet Cong (VC for short) is code named "Victor Charlie" by platoon squads, searching around the fields and jungles. It is basically "Military Language".
Legend says they are still looking for a guy named “charlie” till this day... 👀
2:55 just realized maybe Bubba saw two other soldiers doing this and didn't realize they did it to watch each other's backs
Fun fact: None of the Vietnam Scenes were actually shot in Vietnam. It's just South Carolina dressed up as Vietnam.
Most Vietnam films aren’t.
The only exception I can think of is Bien Den Phu which the Vietnamese allowed the French to film in Vietnam.
Make sure the trees don't speak Vietnamese
