If you’re wondering why Walter reverted back to a child, it’s because the vampirization surgery was rushed to make time for the war. Becoming a vampire reverses your aging just enough to put you back in your prime, but rushing that process will backfire to such a degree that you will de-age until you wither away.
As for why Walter betrayed Hellsing and took that surgery in the first place, he is a vampire hunter first, which is why he’s wanted to kill Alucard since they were paired together back in their WW2 mission; the king of vampires is the ultimate prize. However, Walter soon learned that Alucard was too much to handle, as each life he drains ultimately gives him an extra life to regenerate from, making him impossible to kill, leading Walt to give up and start working with him. However, that changed when the Major captured him and explained that Alucard will be vulnerable once he expelled those 2 million lives in his Level 0 thing you witnessed last episode, leaving him witha single life to burn. Both Walter and Anderson saw that weakness and went through unspeakable upgrades to finish the job before Alucard calls his army back into himself and regai s his # lifehack

I've always believed (With no actual proof) that since the original Hellsing anime butchered the ending so badly (There wasn't an ending to the manga at the time, so they made a bunch of stuff up. It wasn't bad, just way off of the rest of the story) they went out of their way to make sure the voice acting, animation, and pacing of the complete anime was high quality.
