Easy Peasy Poached Eggs in a Coffee Mug

  • Do you enjoy poached eggs for breakfast as much as I do? Here’s an easy way to make them in two minutes with almost no clean up!
When I was taking cooking classes, I was taught to make poached eggs in a sauce pan with vinegar, and swirling it to poach the egg. The problem is that this creates an ultra dirty and sticky pan. It is also very difficult to get the right shape for the poached egg. Inevitably, my poached egg would look like a blob!
Fast forward to my life as a busy working mom, I have figured out a way to cook poached eggs in a coffee mug that takes less time, with less cleanup, and my eggs turn out beautifully and perfectly shaped every single time!
    Here’s how:
Put boiling water in a coffee mug
Crack an egg into the mug
    Microwave for one minute
Adjust the time up or down depending if you prefer a poached egg runny or hard.
Voila! Easy peasy yummy poached egg 🥚!
You may need to adjust the Time depending on the wattage of your microwave. Mine is 1200 watts.
It’s a great way to start off your day!
Peace ☮️ and Love ❤️ to you and yours

I live in a single room with just a microwave, toaster and kettle so it's just simple videos like this that makes my diet become a bit more pleasant. If I lived in a single room like you do I would definitely purchase a small "pizza oven" or similar - this appliance is the same size as a microwave and very cheap to buy, yet it does everything a large oven does - you can make pizza or bake a chicken, cook vegetables, bake cakes and desserts, grill, reheat, whatever! It would change your life, in fact. 🙂🇭🇲

I love this method, but I don't bother boiling water first, just microwave about a minute. I do a couple at a time in the same mug, eggs first and then cover with tapwater (not to the top). You'll dial in the time according to your microwave and yolk preference.
I also like to use a cup of bone broth and seasonings (even nutritional yeast flakes for the B vitamins). Keep an eye on it if you see whites rising, stop and stir, nuke a little more. Makes a super quick and tasty protein-rich cup of soup.

Google it as there's lots of ideas.......
Classic, blender, stick blender or even microwave.
Tried microwave and it works well, just put your ingredients in the microwave and heat for 30 seconds, stir well, 30 seconds, stir well, 15 seconds, stir well, 15 seconds....... etc until you're happy with the consistency. Don't try wacking it in for a minute at a time as it will just solidify.
Blender works well using melted butter added slowly to egg mixture .
Stick blender similarly works well but I've never tried the classic method!

Interesting idea. I tried microwave cold water start and the yolk was hard, white less than ideal. Tried with a boiling water start much better but not great.

You only need to for about a half inch of water above the egg one egg is about 54 seconds depending on the power of your microwave. You don't have to put that much water.

You don't need to boil the water. The water is just there to buffer the microwaves. I turn on my tap to cold and let it run for 30 seconds so that it's the same temperature every time. Add 1/2 cup of water to small dish or mug. The smaller the better. Then microwave ( in my case ) for 45 seconds. Perfect poached egg.

Did this method produce good, runny yolks, or did it produce solid yolks? For the purpose of providing "gravy" for the toast, I like the yolks to be runny.

It worked!!!, but for more runny egg set microwave for 45 sec not 1 min ☀️

I used full power. You need to adjust according to the wattage of your microwave as well.

To get a poached egg, you want the white to be cooked and the yolk to be runny. To do this, you are basically injecting heat into the egg from the outside in. In water via boiling, heat travels inwards by conduction but take longer. The advantage is that there are less variables. Boiling water will always be thereabouts of 100'C. So basically you only need to bother with one variable which is time.
Using a microwave with water and egg in a mug, there is conduction via water as well as microwaves penetrating the water into the egg white then the yolk. This increases the variables, basically starting temperature of water, amount of water, microwave power and time. Using hot water, you reduce the variables as say your hot water starts at 80'C at point of microwave turn on as the room temperature egg and mug will reduce it's temperature from boiling(if you started with boiling water). So then you start with 80'C water going quickly to roughly 100'C and maintaining it there. From then on the variable is time and microwave power. Fix the power and essentially your only variable is time. So starting with hot water makes things easy as the variability is mostly only time to cook the egg.
If you start with cold water, there is additional complexity as it becomes a 2 step process; you need to heat up the water followed by cooking the egg. The 1st step is affected by the amount of water. In order to save time, you'll add less water but any error in timing will directly affect the end-result more. The more water there is, the longer it takes but any error in timing will be buffered by the larger volume of water as it absorbs more proportion of the microwaves compared to the volume of the egg, making it more forgiving in the end result for any error in timing.
In summary, the lesser the water used, the lesser the buffer and more unforging in the end result. The colder the water used, the harder it is to estimate the 1st step which is boiling the water and thus the easier to estimate time wrongly and also affecting the end result.
Lastly as others have mentioned, the mug's temperature is also a factor so the first use of a cold mug and the 2nd round using an already hot mug will need to have their timing adjusted as well.

Yes, this method is very good! You have to be a bit careful with the timing of it in the microwave, though! A bit of trial and error may be needed!

Less than half a mug of cold water. Crack in an egg. Microwave for about 1min on high power with a 1000w microwave. Adjust by 5 sec increments to get the yolk to your desire runniness preference.

Just wondering though what if you put the egg in the boiling water in your cup, but stopped there. I’ll bet it cooks without using the microwave, hmm 🤔 I think I’ll try that!
