Bob Miller, no longer with us - he also shows his gigantic potatoes that he stored. Fascinating man too, a trapper and homesteader. Well worth buying that book if you can find it. Hoping you'll see this, I know it's an old post. TH-cam sends them to me out of order.
Great video! My only suggestion is 2 put some sort of screen over the vent hole to keep critters out that might be looking for shelter and perhaps a giant snack.

Yours was a year ago, journey through grief is rough and praying you’re doing ok now. -with that said I have to say that the grief sneaks in on you from time to time. My recent was going on3 years ago when I lost my small dog Rory 😭💔 it was him and me for 12 years, my son gave me a husky puppy ( Sorcha Claire 🥰) when rory survived surgery for a tumour removal. He lived to 18-1/2 and it ripped me apart , Sorcha everyday kept me glued together and we helped each other looking back as it dawned on me, for 6 years she had rory 24/7 too and missed him. Just this morning - a song, a smell or something Sorcha does- brings those missing him feelings and tears right to the surface- so know that you’re not alone. I lost 2 sisters and 2 brother in laws from December to March this year,, so handling that now. 🙏 for your heart to heal, and sending hugs. 🤗
A little trick I learned in drumline to keep your toes warm: put a little baggie over each sock, inside the shoe. Not the kind with the ziplock. Just plain sandwich bags. Sock, then bag, then shoe. Makes any shoe WAY warmer . Including winter boots. Make sure the bag isn't tight around your toes, but it has room to move a little
Putting the Blaze Orange on the dogs was a good idea. I hope you consider doing the same for yourself. Especially with those deer colored pants you are wearing.
LINNEA PLEASE READ THIS!!!!! I have a ram promaster too. I live in Yukon Canada. I discovered if a lot of snow gets into the vent on the hood where the air intake is, you can end up with a big chunk of ice inside the air intake. Now I put a tarp over my windshield and upper part of the hood overnight or when it snows. Plus I pop the hood once a week to make sure no snow has gotten in anyway. I hope this saves you some trouble this winter!!

You might want to get a larger orange "sweater" for the dogs. Recommended is at least 500 square inches of blaze orange to be worn during deer hunting season.
The accessibility might hamper your efforts to get the veggies out. I'm envisioning you head first in the garbage can with your feet sticking out the top. Better ask Chris to hold your feet. LOL. I'm thinking several round shelves with a handle through them might make access easier. But the packing of the straw wouldn't work unless the shelves had a lip around the outer edge. Is that necessary to keep them from freezing? Ditch the leaves. Parasites use fallen leaves to hide and disseminate. Straw is more hardy against mold. It's the better choice. But I'm pretty impressed you dug so deep to get that can in there. Often times I get maybe a foot deep and just can't get any further.
Everytime I watch your videos I have to immediately find my dog for snuggles. Akela has the best morning energy. She has strong “five more minute” vibes. How lucky to have two sweet dog friends in your life ❤️❤️

Do you guys have booties for the dogs paws? They'll find the cold painful after a while. Could end up with dry cracked pads. Get "bag balm". It's like Vaseline it's made for cow teats. Works great for human hands too.
An old home I bought yrs. Ago had a rectangle wood frame w/a slope pitch n roof on it.?? We lifted it up and they had 3 55 gal drums buried in sand and wood lids on the drums but the old couple always had big gardens and stored the root veggies in these drums..

Bet ya found a lot of roots in the first spot you dug. You need a post hole digger. Need to put rocks in your hole to keep it from plugging up the holes drilled in bottom of can.
All those holes in the garbage cans will give a place for rust to start. Should have been painted with a spray can of Rustoleum paint. Maybe later but should be done before melt.
Great idea for the root cellar!! A friend of mine tailered two safety vests for her dogs since many think they're "wolves" out in the woods. Great idea! Don't forget to get a hat for yourself too!
I think your going to need a bigger root celler then the one garbage can. Looks like enough for a couple weeks. Another is to have some kind of transportation out of there if push come shove. Snow mobile maybe.
We have a short bus skoolie and put in a cubic mini! It's a great little heat source and so darn cute too with that fireplace front! We ran the pipe out the back where there was already a hole where the big signal lights used to be. I love that you can burn a few pine cones or whatever else you find on the ground and heat the bus in minutes! The bummer is that the stove is SO small it's hard to keep it going for long without feeding it; need some really good hardwood chunks for night time! Good luck, I'm sure you'll do just fine with the installation! :)
Great job. Looks amazing. You might want to put a wire screen heavy duty one over the vent hole. Those little animals can be tough 😂. I learned that the hard way. Great video
Good job....you work very hard and productive. Love both dogs! Glad you put the loud color around your dogs necks. About 1935, in Alaska, my grandfather, from Sweden, was working in the woods and a hunter heard him and shot him in his arm . He was brought to a Dr. That was drunk and he cut his arm off. But Grandpa was a strong short man and still worked very hard with a hook and never complained. Just to back up your reasoning about your 🐕's. See ya from Central Oklahoma

What an incredible location to spend your winter. I’ve lived in the snow and through very cold temps and there were some rough times but I have learned, so much, from every experience. It may be a tough winter but you will come out a stronger woman, at the end. Thanks for sharing
