I’ve been a shadow wrap heel lover for a long time now. I usually knit socks toe-up, two at a time, and I do often want a deeper heel. So I’ll definitely try this method and hope that I can figure out the sequence for doing it toe-up. I would pay for a toe-up pattern using your new method.
I would absolutely love a written out pattern for a vanilla sock. I’m still new to sock knitting (and knitting in general) and would absolutely pay for this written up with vanilla sock instructions.
This is the clearest tutorial I have seen for shadow wrap heel. I would like to see a vanilla version for a heavier weight yarn, preferably dk, but I would also use a worsted. I see some comments about toe up, and I prefer to knit tie up socks, but I notice that there are more stitches on the sole when the heel is complete but the gusset is not. Maybe this is easy to change to toe up but I can’t conceptualize it right now. I would knit top down just to use this heel. Sometimes a change in technique changes my preferences. I really like that there are no holes along the decrease line, and my GSR heels and toes always have tiny holes. Thank you for this tutorial!❤
I'm so glad you found it so clear! I have some ideas for making this work toe-up but I haven't had a chance to try them out yet. As for GSR - this all started because I knit a GSR heel for this sock design and wasn't happy with it!
Yes for a vanilla sock! I don't really knit socks, but this style excites me enough to want to do them. Thank you so much, such a clear tutorial, and beautiful result!
Thank you, Ysolda, for coming up with this method. I love a short row heel but because of my high arches the fit is always tight. I would love to see this done top down. I will definitely purchase this as soon as it is available.
Almost excited to learn new heel variations 😅 Love your explanations and would love a vanilla sock pattern in this style 😇 great work, thank you for showing 😘
Thank you so much for figuring out a new method for knitting socks with a wide gusset! I have been knitting two pairs of socks (the first socks I ever made) with traditional heel flaps and gussets and I am ready to try a new technique. They look very nice!
I'm knitting this heel second time in your Shadow Print Sock pattern and must say that the result is stunning! I love that there are no gaps no holes between the instep and heel. I am truly impressed how smoothly it all flows. I am very happy with the fit of this sock! Thank you so much!
I tried this heel and I like it! 32 heel stitches, left 8 in the middle. Ended up VERY deep so next time leaving 10 stitches and doing an every other round decrease for the gusset.
Yes! I can never seem to do afterthought or wrap heels because they stretch across my foot and distort in an unsightly manner. I would also love a toe up version since I like to play sock yarn chicken on my husband’s socks!
I love this idea and can see it becoming as popular as your Mussleburgh for socks! As many others have said, please give us the option of the gusset/ heel for Toe Up Socks. Thank you for your creative thinking Ysolda!
Traditional shadow wrap heels don’t work for me as I have an exceptionally large heel diagonal measurement, so I’m definitely going to try this method out on my next pair of socks! Thanks so much for the excellent work on this, Ysolda! I prefer working toe-up on my socks, and I don’t really like the thickness of slip stitch heels, so I’ve really been struggling with making socks to fit me properly! Thanks again!
This is such a brilliant idea for a heel. I knit socks almost exclusively and it’s so valuable to have lots of different heel, toe, and cuff variations to be able to always pick the perfect one for a given pattern. I love short row heels for preserving a flat knit texture. Stockinette heel flaps fit terribly, but other heel flaps don’t always suit an otherwise vanilla sock. I’m a little surprised I haven’t seen a heel similar to what you’ve done here because the concept seems so intuitive now that you’ve presented it. Thank you for this brilliant innovation! I can’t wait to try it.
This method looks great! I’m a relatively new knitter, and new sock knitter. I’ve done the traditional slip stitch heel and gusset, and I am interested in learning new techniques. Your tutorial explains and demonstrates everything so clearly. I also have a high instep, so I’ll be trying this method soon!
Fantastic! I’ve knit so many socks and landed on the heel flap and gusset as the best fit for me, but I’m excited to try something new. A vanilla sock with this heel written for many sizes and gauges would be wonderful.
Would love to see this as a vanilla pattern or even as just a heel practice pattern (just a bit of sock above and below the heel). This is so interesting and the shadow wrap heel is my favorite but sometimes doesn’t fit quite as well as I would like so this is a great innovation you have developed!
I am so happy that you did this tutorial! Following this excellent tutorial, I just completed the second heel for a pair of Tittygaga Socks by Nancy Wheeler. The fit is perfect! Thank you!
😮FANTASTIC- I’ve been trying to make mods to the short row heel this week for socks for my son. This is so timely! 🙏🏽 I woke up and saw a notification on my phone of a new video- read the title and immediately started watching. 😂 still in bed, but will be jumping up, doing some frogging, then trying your new way. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
INTERESTING: I might even try those, although I so far have never wanted different socks, as I am VERY happy w/ my current socks. After developing those of mine AND they are rather similar to these of yours on first part of .. "bumerang..", EXCEPT: I, on WS, for shadow wrap I do pick up stitch from the OTHER SIDE of that purl stitch. I believe it is it’s “scarf” of THAT purl stitch, but from the other side you pick up yours. Your second part of yours is unique, but yet I am so happy w/ mine.. But because of that similarity described above, I am intrigue, that I might even buy it :). Sorry, I am not English, but you made me so intrigued, that I SO wanna try and share it with you. Thank you for your job.
Thank you for your hard work on this pattern. Yes please I would like to try the Vanilla Sock pattern. I have only knit toe up socks apart from half of the top down sock which was ripped out. Thank you for the tutorial too. Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year, in case we don't see you before.
Toe up video please please please 🙏🙏🙏. This looks great just can't work out how to do this in reverse. Always tend to do a contrast heel too so showing it like this is ideal. Thanks
I usually knit german short rows and a heel flap and gusset fits my foot better. But it’s not feasible when you do colorwork so I will definitely try this heel.
thank you soo much for this video, I love a short row heel, I have been doing a modified version but it does not work well with a contrasting colour and is still not deep enough, you new deep short row heel will solve these issues I have been having. I can't wait to try it
I just watched this tutorial. I am intrigued. I will add this to my next cuff down sock. I would purchase a cuff down vanilla sock pattern with this heel. I am curious as to the depth of the heel you knitted in the tutorial. I need 2 3/4” to accommodate my high arch.
Looks lovely! Would love to have this as a vanilla heel pattern, as I have been fiddling with this type of heel for a while, and not totally thrilled with my results so far. ❤
Thanks for this. I have a high instep and have tried many heels, but none seems to work for me as well as the heel flap and gusset. This heel seems to combine the best of both the shadow wrap and gusset heel in one. I would love to see a venilla sock pattern with this heel. Thanks again.
Genius! I’ve played around with various short row/shadow wrap heels…(60% of heel sts, extra rows before SR heel…) and still not “quite” a good fit for my high instep. Yes, please (!!!) pattern for this heel. Perhaps DK weight? My thot here: try out w less sts than my normal 72-80 st using fingering wt yarn. I would never have had the patience to make 40 samples! I kinda gave up after 5-6! Which is also why I love your patterns! I can see what doesn’t fit right, but my brain doesn’t “see” what I need to do to adjust. I appreciate all you do for sweaters (shaping), mitts and now socks! Thank you!!!
Oh goodness most of my samples were only of half the heel and baby sized! But a big percentage of what I knit as a designer is trying to work things out, not finished projects
But still... it's a LOT of work all the same! And I certainly appreciate that, it shows in your fantastic patterns!! I love the internet for sharing/finding info, previously only available thru books/magazines…trying to find the exact technique wasn’t easy at times. I plan to play around with this heel to make it work for my foot! Thank you!
Yes I would appreciate a written vanilla pattern for this heel. I love the look of short row heels but they do not fit me at all. Could this be adapted to fit an even higher instep, perhaps by beginning with more than 50% of the total stitches?
Maybe! I can knit left handed but I’ve only ever really used the skill to teach beginners and that was about 15 years ago! Let me practise and get back to you 😂
@ysoldateague It would be an amazing help since RLI and LLI are made the opposite way and for me the fabric just never looks right when I do it the left handed way.
I would love to see this as a vanilla sock pattern. Especially if you gave the option for toe-up!
This👆🏻 please
Yes please! I like a toe up
Ja graag! Ik brei altijd toe up. Alvast bedankt
For toe-up, would it work to just reverse when you do the increases?
Yes please! I only knit toe up, it's the easiest way to try on for fit as I knit
Yes!! Please release this as a pattern. Sock knitters all over the world will thank you.
Yes interested in a vanilla sock with the deep heel and also toe up version.
Yes I like toe up as well!
Same!
Yes please! A vanilla sock pattern with this heel would be wonderful. Thank you 😊
please yes, for we beginners that have struggled with other heels, a vanilla worsted weight would be awesome, and I'd prepay to have it writteh!
One more vote for the vanilla deep heel pattern. Thank you!
This was perfect timing! I had just gotten to the heel on my latest pair of socks when this popped up in my suggestions. I tried it out and LOVE it!
I would absolutely love a written out pattern for a vanilla sock. I’m still new to sock knitting (and knitting in general) and would absolutely pay for this written up with vanilla sock instructions.
I would very much like to see this on a vanilla sock pattern too. I also knit a lot of toe up socks. Very nice heel pattern. Thank you for sharing! ❤
Yes, please! A vanilla toe-up sock pattern with this heel.
This is the clearest tutorial I have seen for shadow wrap heel. I would like to see a vanilla version for a heavier weight yarn, preferably dk, but I would also use a worsted.

Great video! I love the scientific approach you take with knit design. Keep innovating!
I would definitely love this as a vanilla sock pattern thank you 😊😊
Yes for a vanilla sock! I don't really knit socks, but this style excites me enough to want to do them. Thank you so much, such a clear tutorial, and beautiful result!
Awesome! Perfect for my husband and kids who have high arches ❤❤❤ I will use this from now on.😊
Thank you, Ysolda, for coming up with this method. I love a short row heel but because of my high arches the fit is always tight. I would love to see this done top down. I will definitely purchase this as soon as it is available.
Yes please! I have heard of this being done but have never quite understood how. As a Musselburgh addict, I’ll knit anything you design.
Almost excited to learn new heel variations 😅 Love your explanations and would love a vanilla sock pattern in this style 😇 great work, thank you for showing 😘
Yes, I am interested in a vanilla version of this pattern. Thank you!
Thank you for figuring out this new design! I've struggled to knit socks for my daughter who has a high instep, so I'm excited to try these.
I can already tell this will be a game changer! Gonna try this on my next pair
Thank you so much for figuring out a new method for knitting socks with a wide gusset! I have been knitting two pairs of socks (the first socks I ever made) with traditional heel flaps and gussets and I am ready to try a new technique. They look very nice!
Brilliant! I always use the heel flap and gusset for better fit, but this looks easy and a good fit too - I’ll give it a go on my next pair!
I agree. I'd love to see a tutorial on the total sock😊
I'm knitting this heel second time in your Shadow Print Sock pattern and must say that the result is stunning! I love that there are no gaps no holes between the instep and heel. I am truly impressed how smoothly it all flows. I am very happy with the fit of this sock! Thank you so much!
Vanilla pattern would be great Ysolda. Really like the look of this heel. Thank you. 🙋🏼🏴
I would like to see how to do this toe up!😊
+
YES!
Yes please. I would love to see how this heel feels and wears
I tried this heel and I like it! 32 heel stitches, left 8 in the middle. Ended up VERY deep so next time leaving 10 stitches and doing an every other round decrease for the gusset.
Yes, I would love a pattern with the deep shadow heel to purchase. Thanks for the tutorial!
A vanilla sock with your new heel would be great!

Wonderful idea! Will be trying this and I would love this as a vanilla sock pattern.
Yes, thank you…would love to try this heel and would appreciate a written pattern! Can’t wait to try it.
Finally a heel that would work with my feet 🎉 thank you thank you ☺️

I’d love to have this as a vanilla sock pattern, too!!
I would also love to see this as a vanilla sock pattern and I’m happy with cuff down
Yes!!! Vanilla Deep Shadow Heel sock toe up please !
Please release as a pattern. It looks like it solves all my short row heel problems!
This looks FANTASTIC!!!
Would love to see this as a vanilla pattern or even as just a heel practice pattern (just a bit of sock above and below the heel). This is so interesting and the shadow wrap heel is my favorite but sometimes doesn’t fit quite as well as I would like so this is a great innovation you have developed!
That would be great! Very interested in a vanilla sock pattern.
Yes please would love a deep shadow heal vanilla sock!
I am so happy that you did this tutorial! Following this excellent tutorial, I just completed the second heel for a pair of Tittygaga Socks by Nancy Wheeler. The fit is perfect! Thank you!
Casting on gift socks tomorrow, and will give this a try! Thanks (I've also subscribed and liked :)
Also happy to see your DK sock pattern. Bought that from your website. Thanks

Absolutely would purchase a vanilla sock pattern using this heel.
😮FANTASTIC- I’ve been trying to make mods to the short row heel this week for socks for my son. This is so timely! 🙏🏽

Thanks
Ysolda! this will so help me with socks for a friend who has rather wide feet and my regular shadow wrap is just a tad tight for him. Thanks!!!
You sure worked hard to make the shadow heel roomier.
Thank you so much! You are so very kind☺️
I usually knit german short rows and a heel flap and gusset fits my foot better. But it’s not feasible when you do colorwork so I will definitely try this heel.
Yes yes…would love to see the heel on vanilla sock please..

I just watched this tutorial. I am intrigued. I will add this to my next cuff down sock. I would purchase a cuff down vanilla sock pattern with this heel.
I am curious as to the depth of the heel you knitted in the tutorial. I need 2 3/4” to accommodate my high arch.
Yes please! For toe up and cuff Down too!
Looks lovely! Would love to have this as a vanilla heel pattern, as I have been fiddling with this type of heel for a while, and not totally thrilled with my results so far. ❤
Yes please for the vanilla option!
I would love the vanilla sock pattern option
Definitely interested in a vanilla version of the deep shadow heel pattern. ❤
Bedankt dat je het is gelukt om meer ruimte creëren bij de hiel dat zou ik graag willen leren
Ik heb die ruimte nodig in mijn sokken.
Thank you for this great tutorial!
Yes! For vanilla sock
Yes please for a vanilla pattern x

Amazing! You are an incredibly talented designer. Any chance of a tutorial for the left handed knitter?
