Watching this in 2020 out of pure nostalgia. I had the Zenbook UX301LA with maxed specs (the 27-watt i7-4558U, 8 GB DDR3L, 512 GB SSD, 2560 x 1440 IGZO touchscreen) as my main laptop from 2014 to 2019. I paid a hefty sum of €2000 for it, but it was well worth it in retrospect. It never let me down, and was always a joy to use. I am a computational scientist by profession, and I even ran a fair amount of simulations with this machine, some of which ended up directly as results in peer-reviewed research papers. The single-core performance was excellent, and I do not think the benchmark numbers in online databases for the processor do justice for the Zenbook (I suspect most of the sampling for the i7-4558U was from the 13-inch MBPs of the time, and perhaps the MBP had worse thermals than this laptop). I could run a simulation non-stop for days and the cpu sustained high clock frequencies. In fact, in single-core performance this ZenBook easily crushed the Intel Xeons in the cheese-grater 2012 Mac Pro that I had as my office desktop back when the Zenbook was still fairly new. I finally sold the Zenbook in 2019 to make room for newer laptops (it still looked brand new thanks to the glass surfaces), but I do still miss it.
This is such a thorough and professional review. Thank you Lisa its been very helpful to me. I just wish it was easier to find one of these to actually buy here in the UK!
This is definitely the best ultrabook, combination of highest end specs, great design/quality, awesome screen and sound as well. This one is a winner guiess
Thanks for this review. Like others are saying I'd love a comparison with this and the brand new X1 Carbon, the only current windows ultrabook that compares in spec's and price (also, a review of the X1 Carbon would be great, although it was just released so I'm sure one is on the way) I could never buy a laptop without your stamp of approval.
Hey Lisa, once again what an in depth review but you think you can do a smack down comparison between the Asus ux301 and the mac book pro 13 retina with Haswell. That would be awesome. Never knew the ux301 was this powerful, most ultra books I've seen are good but this one... Just damn.
Is Asus not making these anymore? I see a few on Amazon, but the Asus web store only has newer models, and NONE of them are this amazing blue that I am falling in love with. I hope I can get my hands on one.
Kenny Larson Just saw the spec sheet and the X1 Carbon won't match the UX301LA for 28 watt CPU and Iris 5100 graphics. It looks like a standard ULV Core i7 and HD 5000 graphics will be the top offering. Sure wish someone besides Apple and Asus would jump on this space!
Thanks for the info! No kidding. Rather disappointed that Lenovo isn't willing to match Asus on this one. That being said, Lenovo isn't targeting the same audience as Asus here. They'd probably rather have people buy into their W line if they need the power. I need power just not as much power as the W. Looks like it'll be the Asus for me. Top notch reviews btw. Been a big fan for a quite a while.
Kenny Larson I'd buy the carbon in a heartbeat if I could get the same specs. I love the look and weight of it, but I really want to future-proof a bit more.
Rare for me to see a lady to talk so nice about computers and having so much knowledge about them. You present this product amazing . U are so natural and expressive . The ultrabook is really high end product and incredible specs for 1.3kg,unfortunately i cannot afford to have one ,if i calculate for a minimum salary in Romania wich is arround 200 $ ,basic i work a whole year to have one ,because in Romania is 25% vat taxes . Your reviews makes me know exactly the product . Thanks and keep it up ,and make more reviews.
Nice review Lisa! Quick question, I'm noticing quite a bit of screen ghosting on my new UX301LA when I flick left and right in the metro UI. Is this normal / noticeable on your unit? Also, I find that even when using it on its very lowest brightness setting in dark room, the screen backlight is a touch too bright!
Great review as usual Lisa. I have a Sony Z i7 based series notebook, and it gets very hot with any application that needs some faster processing. The fan starts to spin loudly the moment I start such applications. This Asus notebook could be a better choice.
Thank u so much for the review, Lisa! I got a Vaio Flip 13 and after 20 days i am not that satisfied with it! It is too noisy and has problem with its display! I guess it is better to return it and buy the Asus! What do you think! Also this model has 802.11AC! Does it have the same problem that other ultrabooks with 802.11AC wireless have??
Thanks for the excellent review Lisa. I was considering this laptop or the MBP 13. Both appear to have excellent hardware, now I just need to decide which OS I actually want. Normally I would go with Windows, but right now I am a severe aversion to Windows 8.
Lisa please I cannot decide between the Asus Ux301La or the lenovo thinkpad yoga. I know they are different but still I want future proof also practical. What would you pick given the choice? Thanks. As always Amazing reviews! !
lisa, i think the best screen on any laptop right now is the Acer V7 582pg 6421. it is absolutely a stunning display and beats this laptop while costing much less.
I love your reviews. I watch them every day now. Could you please do a pro smackdown video? I keep having to buy new laptops for school and I'm starting to see I don't know how to pick good ones. I need one with iOS and one with Windows, just not sure which two to get. My current two are lightweight and thin enough to both fit in my bookbag with my books (perfect for traveling) but the screens are annoyingly small and they're slow (running Adobe apps and online lab apps). I think I need grown-up laptops, lol. Can you please do a video on the best pro laptops?
Hello Lisa. Thanks for the great review of this product! I have 3 specific questions that would really help me in my buying decision. 1. You said that you'd shy away from the $1,650 core i5-4200 version of this product, but if I don't do any video editing or gaming, etc., and only do MS Office work, web browsing, movie streaming, video watching and skyping, is there any point in paying the extra $250 to get the core i7-4558 (which you seemed to like much better), or would that be a waste of money? And, would the i7 be noticeably better for Photoshop, not that I do much of that? 2. From an environmental perspective, I like to hold on to my electronics as long as possible, and thus when I do buy a new computer I'm willing to invest toward the top of the price range to get a machine I can use longer. With that in mind, is the i7 going to expend my computer's "usable life" enough that you feel that investing the extra $200/250 to get the i7 would be worth it? 3. Comparing the Haswell i5 to the i7, all other specs the same, and using the computer as I described above, will the i5 get longer battery life, since it's simply not using as many watts as the i7, or will the i7 in fact have longer battery life because it'll be operating in the low range of its potential, and thus not consuming the full 28 watts, or will both machines get about the same battery life based on my usage? Just trying to understand if a more powerful chip automatically consumes more energy because it's more powerful, even if I don't use all that power.
Honestly, I think the Core i5 version of this is a bit overpriced, while the $200 for the Core i7-4558U nets you a uniquely powerful machine currently not offered in any other 13" Ultrabook. That's why I lean toward the version we reviewed here. But yes, the Core i5-4200U should have better battery life.

Please do a comparison between this and Late 2013 Macbook Pro 13"
You mean the outgoing UX31A touch with Ivy Bridge? The UX301 is faster, has a much higher resolution display with no light bleed, more RAM and faster WiFi.
MobileTechReview There is a model of UX31LA with i7 4500U/ i5 4200U processor. Is it difference only in design (compared to basic configuration of UX301) or there is something else?
JustRandomPerson Ah, I get it now. Haven't seen that model on US store shelves yet, but I do see it online for $1500 US. The UX301 reviewed here is about 20% faster (CPU and graphics are both faster) and has the Gorilla Glass lid and deck.
Lisa, How is this Asus Zenbook UX301 working out for you? I want to purchase this computer but see many, many negative comments of all kinds about this machine (reviews on Amazon). I'm now on the fence because of these reviews. Does anyone else have negative experiences with this machine?
Can you use a pen for handwriting on this computer? Currently, I use my Convertible and I always write when it looks like a laptop so I have access to the keyboard and pen for writing at the same time. I'm a math teacher who uses Onenote everyday.
If it shuts down when thermal protection kicks in, or if it throttles and gets suddenly slow. You can use something like CoreTemp to check CPU and GPU temps. If they're over 80C I'd start to worry.
It seems like a very nice laptop design and spec-wise, but I own a UX31A and had it randomly shut off numerous times. I received a replacement, and that too also randomly shuts off as well ( it seems to be an issue with the model, as others have had the same issue). Asus now refuses to do anything else to fix the problem. Hope there isn't a similar issue with this model.
The USB port next to the sd card slot has a lightning bolt sign. Is this used for fast charging a smartphone or any other device? Also on UX303 I didn't notice any of these "usb fast charging ports", does this mean that only this laptop can charge faster and not the ux303?
Wouldn't buy this at this price, $2000 is a lot of money for something that is equivalent to the MacBook Pro Retina which you can get for $1499 with a Core i5, Iris 5100, 256GB SSD, 8GB 1600Mhz RAM, Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wifi, 2560*1600 IPS display and up to 9 hours battery life. You save $500 in the process, yes you don't get the i7 but the i7 in the Asus is still just a dual core chip so the difference is negligible though you can add an i7 in to the Mac for $300 and get a copy of Windows 7 or 8 and STILL beat the price of the Zenbook
You're pretty much looking at models without a touch screen since touch usually equals gloss. The Samsung Series 9 and Asus Zenbook UX31A (non=touch) Ivy Bridge models come to mind.
Shaojackify Depends what gaming he means ! No AAA high-quality visuals game should be played on an integrated graphics card, but Iris Graphics are still way enough for most games.
This computer is not good for gaming. It can do some levels of it, however so can my graphing calculator. So if you are playing phone/tablet games on your pc you should be fine, if you are purchasing one to play PC games this is a very poor choice, it will run games but is not optimal and for the price point there are better laptops for gaming.
Shaojackify Clearly if you want a gaming laptop it is not the right choice. But you can totally play games on it, and not just phone/tablet games, it just can't be a recent AAA graphically intense game. That leaves lots of room.
Could you please let me know if the monitor is more glossy or more matte? I have Zenbook UX31A from 2012 which is matte, and I'm considering upgrading, but only if UX301LA also has a matte screen (unlike a Macbook Pro, for example, whose screen is very glossy\shiny).
This or MacBook Pro retina 8gb ram? Using it for Developements, heavy video/photo editing, some games like Nfs and minecraft, writing a lot, backups... Thanks
Don't like OSX and/or want touchscreen? This. Otherwise it's personal preference. Get the thing that works for you. Hint: Windows runs more software ;)
You can't really compare this to the MBP retina. This is considerably lighter and slimmer (much more like the Air). Sure battery life is better on the MBP, but if you really want to utilise the full power of the CPU you're going to keep it plugged in. I suggest trying both and seeing what suits you.
Domagoj Bet I'm going by the official specs on the websites (although there will always be some variation). According the Apple UK website, the MBP Retina is 1.8cm thick and weighs 1.57kg. The MBA is 1.7cm thin and weighs 1.35kg. The international ASUS website states the UX301LA is 1.55cm thick and weighs 1.4kg. www.apple.com/uk/mac/compare/notebooks.html www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/ASUS_ZENBOOK_UX301LA/#specifications
Domagoj Bet Ultimately Apple are unlikely to introduce a 'Retina' version of the MBA, as it knows it will detract from sales of the MBP Retina. Asus knows this just as well, and have obliged, by creating a form factor like the Air with the power and screen of the MBP Retina...
Hi! I am thinking of purchasing asus ux302LG - which should have nvidia graphics card but it seems UX302LA is the only one gonna be available in my country. So I might go for UX302LA with i5 processor to be my longtime laptop . The i5 one does it have SSD too? Can you post windows experience index for the i5 one? Can you upgrade graphics card or any stuff for the ux302LA i5? I am a casual gamer and work mostly using photoshop and lots of tabs in browsing. Do you think the i5 specs of Asus UX302LA can handle it? I worry about the intel 4400.
Could you help me? I'm looking at a very fast laptop that has i7 with dedicated graphics and very thin. I was looking at the razor blade pro, do you know of anything that is as thin as that and that I can still game on?
Sorry Lisa I have to add a few remarks, WARNING! We bought 3 units of this laptop 1 of them in the US! with the next hardware: - i7 -256 ssd ( *2 128 gigs RAID 0 configuration) - 8 gigs - win 8 ALL the units had a hard drive failure sooner or later. the new raid "0" config is very fast but extremely unstable. The support lab told us not to walk with the laptop too much... its not a reasonable ans ware. over 2000$ laptop should be able to be portable isn't it the hole idea...?! the screens brightness is different between each unit. IT IS A MATTER OF TIME TILL YOU WILL HAVE A SSD FAILURE.
#mobiletechreview Hi, great review. I'm a student and I need a laptop/ultrabook that is about 13-14 inches in screen size, full HD, at least 8GB RAM, Intel i5 4th gen, good battery life, and good performance of course. Price 1000 US Dollars or less, and it should be kind of sturdy, not fragile, like the Vaio Pro, and lightweight. What do you recommend? Please help me as I'm wondering between the Vaio Flip 14, ZenBook UX301, and other laptops. Thanks :)
bought this laptop and it has huge scaling problems. worked for a week with right clicking an program -> disable auto scale, but after an update it's just basically unusable. asus support has no idea what i'm talking about, have done a factory reset with no luck.
The UX302LA and LG have a single RAM slot, a standard SATA 2.5" drive bay and the usual socketed wireless card. The UX301 has an M.2 SSD slot (not easy to find aftermarket) and a socketed wireless card.

Every time I see a new mobiletechreview video, I always thumbs up before the video even loads:). I love these reviews!!!!!!!!
This is such a thorough and professional review. Thank you Lisa its been very helpful to me.
I just wish it was easier to find one of these to actually buy here in the UK!
Nice to see you back Lisa, good review, not many videos from CES2014 ??
We've put up around 6 CES videos so far, and there are still a few to come.
Nice to hear that will be waiting for them than ^_^
Returned zenbook within 2 hours of receiving. Wanted to love it. Couldn't.
Lisa you are the best tech reviewer and i listen to alot of tech reviews!
This is definitely the best ultrabook, combination of highest end specs, great design/quality, awesome screen and sound as well. This one is a winner guiess
Awesome review!!! Always trustworthy and in depth, thanks Lisa!
I really enjoy your reviews Lisa, thank you so much for your videos.

Awesome review by the way, Lisa.
Hoping for review of the new X1 carbon soon!
As always another great review

Great review !! What about the camera ???
Excellent review. Thanks!
Great review as always. Glad you pointed out the SD card sticking out still. Almost as bad as Lenovo leaving out the SD card reader on the New X1.
Great review like always!!! :D
Is Asus not making these anymore? I see a few on Amazon, but the Asus web store only has newer models, and NONE of them are this amazing blue that I am falling in love with. I hope I can get my hands on one.
I'd love to see a comparison between this and the new X1 Carbon for graphics editing.
Khaleel Malki Hopefully Lenovo will get us the high end configuration of the X1 Carbon so we can do a good smackdown!
MobileTechReview Sweet deal! ***** get on it!

Yeah I love it. Like a big giant sapphire bling!!
Just the mention of "IGZO" is enough to salivate me!
Are you going to review the UX302?
Wow. I love my 13 inch rMacBook Pro, but this sure is sexy looking! Thanks again Lisa for another amazing review!
Nice review Lisa! Quick question, I'm noticing quite a bit of screen ghosting on my new UX301LA when I flick left and right in the metro UI. Is this normal / noticeable on your unit? No ghosting on mine, but when the display is properly calibrated, I do seem some red flashing on black text scrolled across a white background.
Great review as usual Lisa. I have a Sony Z i7 based series notebook, and it gets very hot with any application that needs some faster processing. The fan starts to spin loudly the moment I start such applications. This Asus notebook could be a better choice.
So far, this is the closest to a Sony Z successor. A shame Sony stopped making them.
great review

Zenbooks are amazing.
Lisa y u no make review for dell XPS 15??
Almost 200,000 subs!!!!!!
Cool how much does it cost
Whats the price of this?
Is there a version of the Zenbook that does NOT have a touch screen?
That's a beauty!
Whatever happened to Windows PCs costing less than macs???
How is the trackpad?
I wish they would release the ux302lg in the US.
its slower

I have a kind of related question. When playing games on an ultrabook, how do you know when you're stressing it too much?
If it shuts down when thermal protection kicks in, or if it throttles and gets suddenly slow. You can use something like CoreTemp to check CPU and GPU temps. If they're over 80C I'd start to worry.

hi
have any of your friends ... bought this laptop, i couldn't find many user's reviews and i really need help for deciding whether to buy it or not!
Do you have benchmark results of this laptop? geekbench/cinebench
Those benchmarks are covered in this review.
MobileTechReview how big is the laptop again? For curiosity can you tell me? ;)
is there a compatible stylus for this?
hey lisa what is the best laptop for engineering student?
because i have to d som design using CAD and more
Lisa, may I know which of the ASUS's ultrabooks contain optical drive?
Search it up
u rather should just buy a usb external optical drive to keep the slim factor of the asus ultrabook. Shouldn't be that expensive.
I need a laptop for school in around 3-4 months. Should I just get this one or is there a new one coming out soon and I should wait?
Wouldn't buy this at this price, $2000 is a lot of money for something that is equivalent to the MacBook Pro Retina which you can get for $1499 with a Core i5, Iris 5100, 256GB SSD, 8GB 1600Mhz RAM, Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wifi, 2560*1600 IPS display and up to 9 hours battery life. What the difference between this(ux301la) and the ux301l
Apologies if you've already answered this but is it possible to upgrade the SSD storage on the Infinity (UX301LA)?
do you know what happen with the white version? i can´t find it
a good ultrabook with matte display?
You're pretty much looking at models without a touch screen since touch usually equals gloss. The Samsung Series 9 and Asus Zenbook UX31A (non=touch) Ivy Bridge models come to mind.
It hurts me sometimes when you hold a laptop from the screen.
What about RAM 8,16 or more ?
I don't see a ux302 for 999.99 on bestbuy.com.. Did they get rid of it already?
***** That has a standard hard drive combo, so not the same laptop, but thanks.
your personal preference Lisa, ativ book 9 + or ux301LA>
If I was going to spend that much money, the UX301 seems like the wiser buy.
More powerful than macbook pro. Lighter than macbook air. Only downside is lower battery life and so expensive. If it was $1200 I'd get it x.x
IGZO! I'm wondering who can spell that out
I want that notebook 😢
its 2014 and we have not see a dell xps or dell inspiron review ,i guess you guys not good with dell?.
Damn, I would really like to have one >.<
It looks slick and it's so slim *_*
is this good for gaming
No.
Shaojackify Depends what gaming he means !
No AAA high-quality visuals game should be played on an integrated graphics card, but Iris Graphics are still way enough for most games.
This computer is basically for everything. Video editing, gaming, work. They even advertise this pc for gaming in their website lol.
"RAAAAR" LOL. That killed me.
Could you please let me know if the monitor is more glossy or more matte?
I have Zenbook UX31A from 2012 which is matte, and I'm considering upgrading, but only if UX301LA also has a matte screen (unlike a Macbook Pro, for example, whose screen is very glossy\shiny).
wait for the ux305 its coming out in early 2015 and it has a matte screen sounds perfect for you
Mattster321 And the ux305 will have a 3200:1800 pixels
Mattster321 Thanks for your advise on this...

Bluetooth?
This or MacBook Pro retina 8gb ram? Using it for Developements, heavy video/photo editing, some games like Nfs and minecraft, writing a lot, backups...
Thanks
This.
The international ASUS website states the UX301LA is 1.55cm thick and weighs 1.4kg.
www.apple.com/uk/mac/compare/notebooks.html
www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/ASUS_ZENBOOK_UX301LA/#specifications
Domagoj Bet Ultimately Apple are unlikely to introduce a 'Retina' version of the MBA, as it knows it will detract from sales of the MBP Retina. Asus knows this just as well, and have obliged, by creating a form factor like the Air with the power and screen of the MBP Retina...
does anyone know where can i get the white version?
I worry about the intel 4400.
asus has always made great laptops
Gorilla Glass 3?
I'm waiting for Transparent Aluminum.
Beam me up Scotty!
Could you help me? I'm looking at a very fast laptop that has i7 with dedicated graphics and very thin. I was looking at the razor blade pro, do you know of anything that is as thin as that and that I can still game on?
How does this compare with the Acer Aspire S7-392?
Sorry Lisa I have to add a few remarks,
WARNING!
We bought 3 units of this laptop 1 of them in the US!
with the next hardware:
- i7
-256 ssd ( *2 128 gigs RAID 0 configuration)
- 8 gigs
- win 8
ALL the units had a hard drive failure sooner or later.
the new raid "0" config is very fast but extremely unstable.
The support lab told us not to walk with the laptop too much... its not a reasonable ans ware. over 2000$ laptop should be able to be portable isn't it the hole idea...?!
the screens brightness is different between each unit.
IT IS A MATTER OF TIME TILL YOU WILL HAVE A SSD FAILURE.
does it catch FINGERPRINTS like the black asus ux31a prime touch?????
#mobiletechreview Hi, great review. I'm a student and I need a laptop/ultrabook that is about 13-14 inches in screen size, full HD, at least 8GB RAM, Intel i5 4th gen, good battery life, and good performance of course. Price 1000 US Dollars or less, and it should be kind of sturdy, not fragile, like the Vaio Pro, and lightweight. What do you recommend? Please help me as I'm wondering between the Vaio Flip 14, ZenBook UX301, and other laptops. Thanks :)
The Zenbook UX301 far exceeds you budget. The Dell XPS 12 or 13 are rugged and priced closer to your price target.
Thanks :D
But isn't the XPS 13 old ? it was released about 2 years ago.
awesome
bought this laptop and it has huge scaling problems. worked for a week with right clicking an program -> disable auto scale, but after an update it's just basically unusable. asus support has no idea what i'm talking about, have done a factory reset with no luck.
What can you upgrade on the ux302 lg?
The UX302LA and LG have a single RAM slot, a standard SATA 2.5" drive bay and the usual socketed wireless card. The UX301 has an M.2 SSD slot (not easy to find aftermarket) and a socketed wireless card.
I was thinking about this but decided to get samsung series 9 notebook.
