Thank you for the full review of the Omen . Was considering to get HP . Glad that you mention video editing and AutoCAD . That's the two main purpose I work on my laptop for school and work . Thumbs Up !

This is the most thorough and detailed review I've found and purchased one based off of it. It actually fills a niche having portability and battery life for work, but it can run games on mid settings. It's the only 15.6" screen that I've found at this weight class and specs that still has the ability to go over 4 hours.

I was waiting for MobileTech's review for the HP Omen, but really needed a new laptop that could handle my video editing and some light Crysis 3 gaming.. So I couldn't wait. I must say this is the fastest laptop I've ever owned and I'm just coming of a Dell XPS 15 for work and an Alienware M17r4 for play. Still glad you did the review! I always visit you guys before buying new tech.

Nice, thorough review. Best I've seen on the web. My order is in the pipeline. I'm not a gamer, but a Windows platform developer. My Dell XPS, circa 2010, got slower with each new release of Visual Studio to the point it was dogging. I use a high-end Alienware desktop for home development and the laptop in my office dev environment. I'm hoping this will get my productivity back on course. Great work, Lisa. Thank you.

I've had mine for about a month and love the shit out of it. It looks amazing for one, and runs like a champ. I've had the fans ramp up for no reason but I don't care about that. BF3 High is a nice 60fps depending on the map. Caspian Border rarely dips below 50fps on high (if ever depending on if the game is hectic).

Lisa, I know it's a somewhat old laptop, but would you PLEASE do a review of the 15.4" Samsung ATIV Book 9 2014 edition? Unfortunately, Best Buy doesn't carry it (apparently Samsung is discontinuing their ultrabook line, which I'm assuming is why they don't carry this? More on that later) so I haven't been able to see it in person. I have a Series 7 Ultra and absolutely love it, but the 15.4" kind of intrigues me. I'm not the type of person to upgrade a product that is still high end, but I'm almost tempted here.
Getting back to Samsung discontinuing their ultrabook line - such a bummer, IMO. Samsung's ultrabooks, IMO, are top notch, and have easily been the best on the market for the past couple years, although the competition is getting stiff.
I seriously hope they reconsider this.

The XPS 15 is a great laptop, and the Lenovo is the cheapest of the three. It may depend on how much you are willing to pay, and in this case, I think the Dell is a bit overpriced for it's specs. The HP is more expensive than the Lenovo Y50, but most of its specs are better than the Lenovo. Personally, I would go for the HP Omen 15.

Lisa....you owe me a couple of hours added to my life (lol). On one of your reviews, I think it was for the Surface Pro 2, you mentioned Steam games and Civ 5. Since I do not game I didn't have a clue what you where alluding to, well I found out and good grief, Civ 5 is addictive! Since I do not game on computers, I just want to thank you for mentioning Civ 5. I'm a Army vet and I do love the strategy of the game. 😀

    Two questions:
    1. The control panel, with these strips left and right, they are usally reserved for Win8 functions, aren't they? Will they have a function with Win10 or will they get useless after the update?
    2. Can you fully control the backlight colours (...and turn off the speaker lights)? For example, just a whole white coloured keyboard.

Disgruntled Walrus XPS 15's battery will be the longest with 91wh, but doesn't perform well in games because of 750M, Alienware 13 will be between the Omen and XPS 15 in term of performance/battery life. The HP Omen out performs these laptops, but falls sightly short in battery life. The Alienware 13, have excellent size and battery life, but falls short on CPU performance (Ultra-Low Voltage CPU). On the other hand, XPS 15 have excellent performing CPU...but falls behind on GPU which is severely outdated using a 750M while we have the 900M series on the market. I hope this helps.

    Hi Lisa,
Just wanted to know that did you encounter any issue in terms of power managent of omen laptop, while you were reviewing it?
I own the laptop and I do not get good frame rates on game while I run the laptop on battery (am using HP recommended plan). Also, if during the game, if I un plug the adaptor from power supply, frame rates take a hit. even after I re plug the adaptor again, frame rates are not good enough. Have to always restart the laptop.😕

Alright for those wondering how this piece of heaven works, iv had it for about 4 months by now.
    Specs:
    i7
    860m 4g
    8g Ram
256 Pcle ssd. I play mostly first person shooting games, so don't judge me.
Battlefield Bad Company 2: 69-85 FPS (with power adapter plugged in)/(w/o adapter, 30-55 FPS depending on how much you want on the nvidia controls)
Far Cry 3: same as bad company 2
Battlefield 4: -65-80 (with power adapter)/(w/o adapter, 50-55 at highest fps)
Saints Row IV: 70-87 ( with adapter)/(w/o adapter, 55 highest FPS.
The full HD WLED display just gives it an awesome to resolution.
Nothing fun about the color change on keyboard though.

    • @316101jon

So what you're gonna have to do is uninstall HP Omen control under the Control panel. Then search for Recovery Manager, click on "reinstall drivers and/or applications" then look for "HP OMEN Control" under Applications then install it. After installing it, restart the laptop and lights should work. Just let the laptop load for a bit after restarting when your at the desktop. Sadly, programmable keys won't work but lights should

Hi lisa, I want to replace my mid 2012 macbook pro retina 15 with something with windows that has relatively the same dimensions, can do some light gaming properly, is capable of handling most scientific and engineering software (matlab, autocad, mathematica, etc) and doesn't look like and feel like a brick, could this be it? I also like the dell xps 15. How does this compare to that and my current pc?
Also I have become quite terrified of windows trackpads given of how horrible most of them feel compared to apple trackpads, is this one on par with apple's?

Really the two thingw that I'm not crazy about is the position of the headphone jack and the 10 keyless keyboard. I've had a few HP laptops in the past and I've never had a problem with anyone them. I prefer Lenovo because the price to performance is just hard to beat.

I just sent one of these back to HP due to screen flickering and a strange image retention effect with an intermittent halo border around the entire display. I see the machine is flickering like crazy in this review and other users are reporting similar problems with screen flickering in various forums. I am going to cancel my exchange and look at something else.

  • @abdqu

Hello, how would this laptop compare to the Zenbook ux501? Both the laptops have similar, powerful specs and are slim and portable (I don't mind low battery life). I need a laptop that is powerful to run high end games with reasonable settings (I dont play on playing games in 4k with the ux501) but more importantly has a really good screen, with good contrast, beautiful, vibrant and accurate colors like on the Macbook pro, and with high resolution like with ux501 for photo editing and digital painting.
The zenbook is good in that it has a high resolution, powerful hardware and sleek looks, but has a yellowish tint to its whites, and is not possible to use before buying in order to examine the screen for myself as it isn't available locally in the UK. I see that the Omen is a nice competitor, with around the same price, good looks, powerful hardware, and HP laptops are more readily available in the UK, but my problem is the capped 1080p display, would much like to have a 4k as I never tried one before. My solution for the yellowish tint on the ux501 is to use an external monitor when preforming photo editing tasks. I would like to know how these two laptops compare in terms of screen type, build quality, and hardware. Thank you in advance.

    • @abdqu
      @abdqu 9 ปีที่แล้ว

I was looking at the two laptops because they had big processing power to play games. Anyways, I went with the asus with a 1080p display.

reminds me of the msi gs 60 ghost. I have the one with the gtx 870m and boy is it a damn good chip. It can play most games maxxed out 1080p while others struggle. compared to my gtx 780 in my desktop, while the 780 is better for games like fc4 or metro, the laptop runs them fine at 60fps with low to medium graphics. As long as the games run at 60fps im good with any quality to be honest. Although with these thin and light laptops i noticed that my laptop gets extremely hot on the outside, the internals are actually not that bad though. That's what odd, the case feels rediculously hot even when using a nice laptop cooler yet the internals stay at around 50-60 degrees celcius. Not bad, but you're definitly paying a premium, my friend bought a laptop with the same specs as mine for 1,200 while mine cost me 1,700. Laptop looks really nice though, all my coworkers complimented it and they love the multicolor keyboard. Great laptop for the price, this dell just doesn't look that good to me, personal preference i suppose.

The TJL DeathJester11 to be put simply, bad. I get about 2 hours of battery when browsing the internet and playing back hd video. strangely, if you have the screen brightness down a lot and put on battery saving mode though I've had the battery last me 4-5 hours surprisingly.

Hello MobileTechReview thanks for the video, would be great if you could give us information about the screen ability to accept a pen and work with palm rejection, or if it requires to buy other components to have this functionality.

If a laptop or tablet is compatible with an active pen, then I always cover that in detail. If it doesn't have that feature... well then I can't cover that feature :). Laptops don't generally come with pens anymore-- it's the tablets and convertibles that sometimes do.

I find the cooling system is fundamentally flawed. I shouldn't have to elevate the computer to play my games. They put too much rubber feet on the bottom. However it is still a great computer. I own it (I have the next years model) and I love it.

Hey, I gotta question for you, I have the same laptop (960m model) and what are your temps? Mine seems too idle at 60c and quickly jump to 90+ in light/med gaming.

    • @awesomeness0111
      @awesomeness0111 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

+EricSlammer it depends on what game
I'm playing and on what kind of surface. If I'm playing a more intense game like gta 5 on a flat surface the temps will go up to 86 or 87. If I raise the computer up a bit the temps drop to like 81. If I'm on a soft surface like a carpet the temp go to as high as 90

    • @Propainium
      @Propainium 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Curious Tinkering The Lenovo Y50 just got the 960m GPU updates, so I wouldn't be surprised if the HP is next.
Edit: I just hope they choose the 970m vs. the 960m, seeing as the 970m is the first chip in the 9xx series to see improvement over the 860m.

+Curious Tinkering You'll only see benefits from the high 900M series. 970M+. The 870M performs better than the 960M. So price wise, you don't need to.

Josh Latham unfortunately, the HP Omen is one of those expensive "gaming laptops" for sale in Singapore (where I live) that has the following specs for S$2300 (1600 US)
      i7-4710HQ
      860M
      8 gig ram
I can easily buy a more powerful machine for less than that price.
Anyway, I already bought a gaming laptop from Clevo that has a 3K screen, better cooling, 980M, 16gig ram, and only 1 in thick for S$2800 (2000 US)

@@josephtressmith honestly id go for it, ive had this laptop for a couple of days now and its the best computer ive ever had, its super light and very powerful. dont be deterred by it not having a gtx 1080ti or anything, for a long time i always figured if i was gonna get a gaming laptop i might as well get something with a ridiculous graphics card but the gtx 860m paired up with the i7 4th makes a monster combo tbh, ive been running most of my games on good settings and it runs super smooth, for example ive been playing a lot of Dying Light and that game runs perfect. its up to you but for $475 i would pick up this laptop in a heart beat, hope that helps :)

This thing has long been discontinued. I'm watching this video because I used to have one and I miss it. I absolutely loved the design, best looking laptop ever made in my opinion. I had the 15-5220NR which was the newest and highest spec model. i7-4720HQ, 16GB ram, 960GTX with 4GB VRam and 512GB SSD. If HP remade this with new specs I would pay full price on the 1st day released. Instead HP jumped on the gaming bangwagon and the Omens look like shit now. Here's a very satisfying unboxing video of it from HP.
