      Same. Mac OS just sucks. I tried running windows in parallels and it's just not the same. I'd seriously rather use Windows 98 than Mac OS. I use vintage computers all the time so that's not an exaggeration. Windows 98 is so much better than Mac OS. I was really hoping that Windows on arm would run natively on the M series macs but unfortunately that's not the case. Then of course you've got the hardware which is not upgradable or repairable. A modern mac is about as repairable as a disposable paper bag. I didn't have a choice but to use a Mac because I need the longer battery life but now with these newer PCs the battery life is comparable to a Mac so I can switch back. Thank fricking God.

It isn't crazy for a x86 CPU to be competitive in some situations, that much should be expected given how long their manufacturers have been at it. For the M3 to still be eating Intel and AMDs lunch in performance per watt and idle efficiency is what's crazy.
      Edit: And now it's entirely unimpressive, the HX370 is barely competing with the M4 (let alone the M4 Pro or Max). x86 is a dying architecture in the mobile space despite AMD's best attempts to breathe life back into it. Single core on x86 will NEVER catch up (this is hyperbolic, but they're 33% behind here and without Apple just stopping they're screwed), multicore is only staying in the same ballpark because AMD has already drew the clocks down as far as they possibly can into the voltage/frequency curve.

    Lunar Lake is the x86 laptop chip I’ve been waiting for. The only reason I ever considered a MacBook was for the battery life, but I’m not particularly fond of macOS. Apple’s anti-repair practices with their silicon-based Macs have made me even more apprehensive.
    It’s absurd that a “pro” machine comes with just 8 GB of RAM, aggressively swapping to the SSD to maintain performance, which reduces the SSD’s lifespan. If my Windows laptop has a bad SSD, I can usually swap it out or upgrade to a bigger one if I need more storage.
    With Intel getting its act together, it should help keep AMD in check, ultimately leading to a better overall market for consumers.
    At the end of the day, I don’t care if it doesn’t win the efficiency war with Apple, especially if they’re just packing a bigger battery to compensate. What I need is an ultrabook with decent service options and more than 8 GB of RAM. I’m also curious to see how these 8 GB RAM Macs will perform in the long run as AI models continue to grow.

    • @TamasKiss-yk4st
      @TamasKiss-yk4st 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Well, the AI memory usage really mixed the things there, but don't forget Apple still supported their 2GB RAM iPhone 8/3GB RAM iPhone 8 Plus just about 2 years ago, when even the 6GB wasn't really acceptable on Android.. it's about the same, the OS+Chip design in one hand solve a lot of things. This is why Apple was able to run even the most demanding benchmarks with just 8GB RAM on Mac, when Windows wasn't even able to start the same benchmark under 16GB RAM.. they are not the same, don't threate them as the same.

      @@TamasKiss-yk4st Your point with Apple's old device support is definitely a good point, but most Android manufacturers (notably Samsung, which would incentivize other manufacturers to lengthen their support as well) are now adopting a longer support period, which is some good news.
      Your point about OS+Chip design is not very good, especially if you are referring to Apple's ARM architecture, M series chips. ARM actually necessitates more RAM relative to most x86 architecture PCs (most Windows computers) because of the lack of VRAM. Unlike x86, ARM uses the same ram for both the GPU and CPU, thus requiring more relative RAM, even if the OS was more optimized.
      And remember, the reason customers are dissatisfied with Apple is not an issue of whether or not Apple devices require more than 8GB of RAM. *Whether or not the average customer needs 8GB, and whether or not Apple devices use more than 8GB, is completely irrelevant to the issue at hand.* The real issue here is price-to-performance. Apple could very well include a minimum of 16GB on their rather expensive Mac series laptops (as has been industry standard since ~2015). *The one and only reason they don't, is because they are greedy, and know they can get away with it.*

      Watch Geekerwan's review, they explained how the power efficiency curve doesn't necessarily translate the platform's actual performance. Lunar Lake is really great except for the part where the maximum CPU core configuration is only 4P + 4E, an 8P + 4E would have been nice.

I found a nice app that displays the battery charge of all my rechargeable accessories in the task bar.

    I'm really excited with the new windows laptops. I just want to wait 1 or 2 more years so that they are more efficient, ARM will be better and they will be closer to M4 quality (Hopefully fan less!). If I want to go Linux I still have to maintain Windows in dual boot forever, if I want to use Unreal or Unity in Linux rather than Windows then I need to buy Ryder every year, Virtual Desktop isn't on Linux so rebooting would be necessary - which is fine because VR is better on Windows from what I experienced. Drivers are kind of up in the air. Search Everything just fundamentally doesn't work or have a replacement for Linux, and.. that's pretty much it iirc. Unreal Editor performance is worse, but not unusable as far as I've heard, last I used Unity on Linux it literally killed my project (GitHub ftw) over some dumb AF file murdering stuff - It was 3 years ago so idk if I pulled from GitHub or used the local windows install, but probably the latter. Regardless, it just didn't work anymore until I time traveled :/
      Too many Linux idiosyncrasies that I am unfamiliar with compared to the tons of windows ones that I am
      But I'm a gamedev.. so what I've just described is most of what I do. Idk if Photoshop is on Linux but if not that's a major L and sends me right back to Windows.
      I work all day with moments of entertainment while eating and I take a few gaming breaks with my spouse for an hour or two throughout. I don't have a desire to switch to Linux that's so high that I want to cause myself spite injury to force it. I like Linux - I've not had an issue with Mint, though I had a few with Manjaro and have NEVER been able to stand Ubuntu. But my software not working has always been the death of me. It's just always added up to too many reboots throughout the day. When it's just gaming and Virtual Desktop I can switch. My problem is that I won't know if Unreal and the drivers are ready for sure until after I've already bought Ryder and front loaded the work of getting my distro set up properly. Time is precious.
