- In the last video on the 1934 Ford 5 Window we briefly showed some of the original paint that we had started to uncover. Well after 40ish hours, Matt stripped 99% of tan paint that was brushed on back in the 1950s. Matt walks us through some tips and tricks to using Oven Cleaner to remove unwanted paint. While the paint is worn through in spots, we think it looks wayy nicer. Let us know down below what you think!!

Old Henry never meant his paint to last 'till 2021. Good job. My sign painter showed me this trick in the 70's.
Looks amazing Matt!! People need to relax and let a man enjoy HIS car, what a beautiful piece of history. Love the channel guys thank you very much
When you're done working an area dump some diluted white vinegar on the area .It will neutralize the caustic.
No beat up. Your car so your choice, but I’m glad you said you are going to get the dent out of the front guard. Love your work.
As much as I love originality, my OCD is screaming for a fresh paint job. Maybe I’ll relax after the touch up is done. I do agree that it looks a ton better with the house paint removed.
Much better glad you are bringing it back to the original paint great work
I love all the comments suggesting what you should do after you've already done it! The people at the store had to be wondering how dirty is this guys oven!
Beautiful and I can't wait until you get rid of those sealed beam headlights .
Hey Matt I would say a car being 87 years old it looks great you are bring out the character of the car. Great job👍
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Your car, your choice.
To me what is important is that it is a runner and will be driven, rather than sitting on tyres that are rotting out and the engine and other parts seized.
You have given the car a new life and I am sure it will be enjoyed.
Wheels and stance after the paint correction.. will look killer 😎
As a retired professional body/paint guy from the U.K., you’ll get no “beating up” comments from me Matt. Who’d have thought oven cleaner would have worked so well in taking that brush paint off. I’m so looking forward to seeing how well the localised blended in areas turn out (there’s certainly a lot of them) but I have every confidence you’ll get the job done. Wish I could be there to lend a helping hand but you’re a long way away. I’ll be cheering you on from across the pond.
I have used oven cleaner to striped old car parts it's amazing what you find under old paint and dirt oil and stuff
Cute little car.
Certainly deserves the attention.
I like how its coming out. I did the same thing on my truck and people didn’t like it along the way....now its a crowd pleaser and most of all i love it.
Your doing the right thing, house paint should never be used on a car!
34 Fords are sooo iconic! Came out pretty good guys! Nicely Done!!
I'm with you! I think it will look great when you are through! Lots and Lots of hard work!!!
Matt that's a first for me. Never would have thought using oven cleaner to remove paint. That's why I enjoy your channel cause I always learn something new. Thanks friend.
An old trick is you can use oven cleaner to strip model paint from car models if you don't want the paint job you put on a car model. It won't affect the plastic.
Great job you will enjoy the spot repairs with lacquer because it will burn in, blend and buff out much better than modern hardened finishes
I own a beautiful Singer Sm 1953, that is all complete and original but at one point, someone decided to paint it with a cheap paint, same thing...., I am going to try this.....I will let you know....Thank you, you are the man!!
Sure am enjoying all the videos on the old girl. You're doing a great job there!
I do believe we travel the same road, I'm just a LOT further down it. Keep up the great work.👍
I learned that tip from a backyard mechanic. Mr Muscle oven cleaner worked the best, especially for cleaning really greasy engine's. Super cheap and worked better than the overly expensive engine cleaning agent's. I also discovered that Castrol super clean and a bucket of really hot water work wonder's for bringing back rubber part's, like brake pedals and other hard part's.
We have a place where people drop off there recycle chemicals that are no longer needed. We get those strippers and cleaners and paints all the time for free. If you have a recycle place like that in town check it out. It will have something different every time. We drop stuff off and pick stuff up all the time. A lot of people do it, pretty cool nothing goes to wast.
SNOOP U 2, our local place won't let you take anything out ... 🙁
@@scottvadon2095 oh wow that's not good, here in Northen California bay area we have plenty of recycle places, there's even town's that have center's that will line out tool's like a library type thing. Say like you want to build a fence you can check out shovels and post hole digger. If you need to work on your car they have many tool's to chose from and check out. They do have late fees or a time limit to use tool's . They even have share car's, bike's you can rent for the day
@@snoopu2601 , the reasoning is they can't guarantee the chemical isn't contaminated and therefore being used improperly
OK, just for the info; I found a product I feel is the best for removing paint. It's ECO-strip, a water soluble non-corrosive paint remover from Stewart's Systems for Aircraft finishing. I found this when I was rebuilding a 1-26 sailplane and used it for years refurbishing bicycles. It will not burn your skin. In fact I have used it to take other paint off of skin.
It's a nice colour and it's actually coming back into style on a lot of euro cars.
Matt it is coming along nice! I am looking forward to the next video!
you guys lots of extra energy to go with your preferences time might be the same as sanding down for repaint of original color but have fun 👍 enjoyed it 😀
Wow what a difference. You did an awesome job bringing that original paint back. Can't wait to see it done.
I had a 34 three window for years that got away from me in a weak moment, same color cordoba gray. Always enjoy your videos.
I wouldn't beat you up at all for that process. I think it's great you are working to salvage the original paint. I did the same on my car and had to shoot areas that were just friggen ugly. After shooting and fogging it was bright and looked like new paint. After a few weeks the color calmed down and blended right in. Also I don't think there was
any panels replacement because the black showed through. Body was painted by a coachworks and the fenders and extra panels probably painted in plant. Don't know how Ford did it but GM did that and the panels painted at the factory always lost paint and color way faster than the body.
Love this video series restoring the car’s original paint, learning a lot from them.
Same here Keith!
Very well done. Your video "style" makes this fun to watch.
She’s living up to her name! Beautiful!
Really happy to see that "Old Man Tan" paint removed.
Looks great. Realizing the amount of time and effort you put in makes this car truly more “beautiful “. Finish it how you want and enjoy it.
Looks so much better, you are on the correct path Matt.
Looking good. OVEN CLEANER works extremely well, removing paint that is not factory paint; it works super well on removing graffiti from wooden fences.
Night and day difference. Looks a whole lot better! GREAT job!!!!!
Looks great. No verbal abuse but a big smile and Pat on back!
The seal beam conversion and chrome headlights are way more offensive to me. 👍👍
I think your plan for the car is great!
A lot of hard, tedious work but I think it looks great! Much better than it looked before.
Original paint has a great look. In a way it makes the car honest. No hidden bondo or fiberglass patches here!! Plexiglas scrapers would work in removing the house paint. Try Meguiars "Ultimate" series compounds and polishes. They cut without the normal abrasives. Some new chemical stuff is how it works. Won't scratch like normal compounds. GREAT VIDEO!!!
Morning Matt and crew! Wow, that's a lot of work removing that old paint!! It will be worth it, to be honest, before I started watching your channel, I was all in on restored vintage rides, but now I'm leaning towards the original "as found" look, it's like this only once!! ..be safe...God Bless!!
Check out The Beller Museum. Dedicated to restoring and running as their last useful life.
@@patrickmcginnis7028 Thanks for the tip, I will check it out
Man, you must've been some sick of this by the end, but you stuck with it and the results are great. Nice to see that original color.
The car is four years older than I am. It probably looks better than I do. I agree, patina sucks, your idea of matching the original paint is a good one. Look forward to future videos. Thank you.
Looks one million times better already Matt and Mike! Two thumbs up from me!
I like the look, It's only original once! ✌🏻🇺🇸
Thanks for sharing, Guys! I think "Beautiful" is just that! I can't wait to see her after you have worked your magic on her! Enjoy your week! Be safe!
Look really great, good job
Hey Matt, It's your car so you make it look how you like... I like both the "As Found" and the "Fresh Clean Paint" look.. As long as the car is being enjoyed and not rotting away it is perfect.
This is the mindset we have!
Every time I tune in to your show I am ready for whatever your energy level is and the knowledge you have and pass on. You are an impressive man. Great job on the car, the explanation and execution.
I'd have to say that for me, this has been one of the most anticipated videos you have done. It's amazing that it just wipes off with the microfiber, and doesn't require anything more aggressive like a Scotch-brite pad. That proves the chemical action of the cleaner.
I was recommended a product called Presta Ultra Cutting Creme by a friend (also in Penna) who is a professional detailer. It is in between regular wax and rubbing compound. I'm going to try it on my '36 Chevrolet soon.
This reminds me of working on my wife's 66 Charger back in 2000. She wanted to paint the car for local car shows but everything under the hood except the engine was covered with at least an eight of an inch of undercoating. Some covered every;thing except the engine and radiator. Even the brake cylinder, wiper motor and wires were covered. We found oven cleaner worked best on removing the mess that was there. A week of cleaning followed by pulling the engine finally got the compartment ready to be painted.
I love it and know that is a ton of work. Duplicolor Prep Spray will also remove paint
Good job looking good 👍
Great progress on the little old ladies car!!!!
The Car looks Great!! Makes me think the fenders were all black.. Had no idea Oven cleaner could used for paint removal.
I'd be very proud to own that car. I like the direction your headed Matt. Thank you for taking us along...
Glad to hear you are going to change the wheels. The factory paint with an altitude adjustment is what will make that car even greater than it is!
Good deal ,matt it looks old and vintage ,you're doing a fine job can't wait for more.
You're right Matt it looks much better for sure.
I love it, this car has come along way nice job. cant wait to see it on the road.
What a good thing that this car wasn't unearthed until now. I can only imagine if it had been pulled out in the garage in the 80s or 90s, it would have been mindlessly sanded down and given some lame street rod build with some lame modern color and gotten lost in some lame row at a car show
Matt the car is looking amazing!! Bringing it back to its original luster probably increased the value too fold😎👍
For real though nothing like seeing an Oringal 34. There is a shop in San Francisco that builds brand new 32-34 6 car's a year with modern amenities to drive in everyday traffic. There is a few celbraries that bought car's from the car company like Eric Clapton, B.B King, Clint Eastwood and many other's. I've been in the shop is pretty cool yo see the old timers working on them.
I think it looks better like this. I agree with you Matt. Keep up the great work!!
Still looks amazin, great lookin eather way,as long as ur pleased that all that matters ,ur giving it a breath of fresh air again after a long hibernation
Mikes music Matts shimmy shake, took me back to the Disco in the 70's. great job guys. Ron
Looks great Matt!!!
Enjoyed........................... 👍👍👍
Note to self, house paint is a preservative , lookin good🙂👍👍🇦🇺 well done Matt and crew
Agreed. Looks much better in natural color.
I think the original color looks so much better. Glad you are going to do touch ups. She's gonna be Beautiful again 🙂
Man it's your car, so who cares what anyone else says about it, besides you. But I do agree with you, I think it looks much better then it did with the house paint. Once you get those headlights changed out I think it will look amazing. I believe you are really doing the car the justice it deserves. Get it the way you want it and then drive it and enjoy it!!
You can also strip anodizing too. Ez Off yellow cap. Could pit certain aluminums tho.
I've used Ajax cleaner on aluminum just to get rid of the anodizing for applying clear coat.
Baby steps Matt. I know you'll make her look great! 👍
Now driving on of these would be an adventure.
Wow Matt what a difference with the original paint amazing great job 👍🏼
You answered all my questions in the last moments; she’s going to look great brother, keep on trucking. …
That oven cleaner is powerful stuff! Love the original paint!
I’m excited to see the finished product. Keep it moving forward!!
looks great with the old tan paint gone. Now some touch ups on the vulnerable spots to help protect and preserve it and it'll be awesome. I have a 49 pontiac that knowing what i know now, i wish i had just cleaned and buffed the original paint instead of completely repainting it.
It looks so much better!
We now know who cleans the oven at home lol. Never thought to use oven cleaner to strip paint
Great video Matt and Mike
A picture dictionary of a 1934 Ford coupe...Should be Featured, in large color coffee table book picture of vintage Fords... GREAT JOB! I love, all your cars...
Nope, no beating from me. I'm with you all the way on this one! Beautiful is looking beautiful and your plans for her are (IMHO) perfect! The only thing I question is changing the wheels. I hope you are going to stay with the spoked wheels, just a nicer and matching set of black ones. Be safe and stay healthy ITG crew. P.S. I think that Moon and Elvis need a good belly rub, could you give them one from me?
great looking
Another not so small victory. Looking good.
Looks better with every video. What a sweet car.
Looks great excited to see the progress on it .
The car looks great. Love the patina. Look forward to seeing the progress on this one. Be safe and stay well.
Looks much nicer! As a dyed in the wool classic car enthusiast and owner who also happens to work in pulmonology, I can't recommend wearing a respirator mask strongly enough when working with oven cleaner. The sodium hydroxide in oven cleaner is highly damaging to the respiratory system, and you feel it right away. Seriously, protect your lungs.
Car looks great! what a awesome project. Some stance with the wheels cleaned up going to be killer.
Looks great. Lots of work I bet! Enjoy watching the progress you make! 👍👍👍
"Beautiful" is coming around nicely! Love what you're doing with this car, can't wait to see what its future holds!
Looking great! Make sure your paint supplier mixes lacquer for you (nitrocellulose if possible) with the right prep work it will “burn in “ to the original and be almost undetectable. I restore musical instruments and I use this technique often - it’s only original once! I’m glad to see you’re making an effort to save as much as you can.
Who would have thought! However, I remember way back in “69” I spilt a drop or two of brake fluid on a fender of a new black Cadillac, I wiped it off and the prettiest silver spots showed up!🙄
I think it looks rad. Keep up the good work!
That’s some effort right there! Well done.
Looking awesome without that tan paint on it keep up the great work u do with all ur cars
