  • General Motors station was originally opened as a 'special platform' on 1 October 1956 to service the General Motors Holden car factory to the north. An alternate date for the opening is 18 November 1956. Work on the adjacent General Motors Holden factory commenced with the purchase of 152 acres (0.62 km2) of land in 1951, construction commencing in 1955, and completed in 1956. Construction of the station was paid for by General Motors.
    The station opened at the site of a number of private railway sidings, two years after electrification of the line through it was commissioned, and at a time when suburban services to Pakenham did not exist. As a result, only a single platform was provided on the north side on the Down (Pakenham bound) track, and services operated as extensions of Dandenong trains at factory opening and close times. This was altered on 20 January 1975, when suburban services were extended from Dandenong to Pakenham. The Up (Melbourne bound) platform and footbridge to the north was provided in late 1974, and Pakenham trains were timetabled to stop at the station at factory opening and close times.
    The station was provided with a crossover between the double track lines, and a signal box to control it. A number of railway sidings also branched from the station in a westerly direction along the main line. In 1979, they served the International Harvester, Heinz, and General Motors Holden factories. The station could not be accessed from public roads, with the only way in and out via a gate into the General Motors Holden factory.
    In 1991, the General Motors factory closed down, leaving the station essentially isolated.
    A notice was issued by the Public Transport Corporation stating that the station was to close from 5 November 1991, however it remained open for a further eleven years, despite the closure and demolition of the factory, and the fact that the footbridge now led to a fenced-off, empty paddock where the factory had once stood. It was estimated to be the least patronised station in the entire city network, with only an average of 11 passengers using it a day. By the time it closed, only eight trains stopped at the station each day, four each way … Wikipedia
    In 1964 the GM Holden Dandenong Plant had an employee number of 3600.

      wow ! it's a small world on the internet - I surmise even today government departments and their staff have limited people skills or empathy and seek a bonus or promotion for getting a job done without delay at low cost - I often wonder do we vote in politicians for the needs of all or politicians only cater to the needs of the corporate world !

    I remember in the 80's falling asleep on the train after a night tutorial at uni and by passing Dandenong Station. I got off at the next being GMH. It must have been around 10PM on a pitch black night. It was like being in the twilight zone waiting for the train from Pakenham to come thinking to myself this place would be prefect for a murder! All I could hear were crickets. Thankfully in the dim distance a light appeared and I caught the train back to Dandenong.

    Awesome vid. Thank you. Great drone flying. Careful as "they," the non believers like to engage the PoPo or worse "CASA" when one is trespassing and you must not operate your drone in a way that creates a hazard to another aircraft, person or property. This means a train full of people. Stay safe and thanks again for taking us down memory lane. Cheers ;)

    • @urbanaerialexplorer1885
      @urbanaerialexplorer1885  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The drone is under 250 grams - no signs about no trespass or keep out other then using the pedestrian overpass; there is also a service lane along side the rail line with no signs saying not to enter there either at the road rail intersection further up. The line was also closed for maintenance - I'm Certified and Accredited with CASA ... doing some homework before you fly is important as is the understanding for drones and their weight category restrictions - ignorance is no excuse, as is some that make assumptions - What many people don't understand is that I use a CASA nominated software (as do many others) to fly the drone and know my weight of the drone in use, location and flight path it's all recorded.

There is a DJI Mavic Mini 3 (just came out and also under 250 grams) but are a little pricey for me now and will wait until some that get it as an unwanted gift or lose interest and resell !

    If you want an adventure, take the drone down to Omar Street Maidstone. You'll see the entrance to the Medway Golf Club opposite a big shed that the century before was M.G. PENTREATH sand and soil. All the tip trucks were in there . Behind it is a creek you can access down the small hill . You can see 3 tunnels running underground. The creek runs thru the golf course and empties into the Mairybrynong River. It was an adventure playground for all us kids growing up in the area. The golfers were the enemy we had to avoid be they the Japs or the Gerries.
    Also if you get around the corner to the end of Ashley Street there's a wire fence, (had a hole in it in the 70's) which leads to the river and a pipe bridge you can cross and take the short cut to Avendale Heights. Well you could in the olden days.
    You might find it interesting but maybe only if you knew the history. Between Omar St and Hamstead was was all paddock and a metal foundry named Extruded Metals PTY LTD. I can't imagine the extent of the toxic chemicals they dumped into the creek which flowed into the river but it's all housing now and I imagine the creek is now a pipe under the houses.
