  • AMERICAN TRIATHLETE COLLIN CHARTIER TESTS POSITIVE FOR EPO:
    Woke up to the unfortunate news this morning that Collin Chartier, winner of last years PTO US Open and Ironman Mont Tremblant, tested positive for EPO. Here are my thoughts.

    I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a domino effect from this. I think a lot of top tier triathletes are potentially cycling on and off things to get that extra edge. Time will tell.

    As someone who competed in cycling at an international level of sport...I can honestly say that I have never had a doubt that these guys are doping. My guess is many of the top guys are, and maybe many more. I believe I actually asked you in a comment some time ago about testing protocols and if triathlon did test at all. It is a shame, but in endurance sports it is what happens. And I don't believe for a moment that Colin won clean. If you are winning clean, why then go on EPO? Great video Ari, and thanks for your thoughts!!!

      @tak-el-uc ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think there are reasons for a successful clean athlete to start doping. But I agree with you here that Collin's explanation about starting doping doesn't make sense. If he had been winning clean, I don't think he would have had the sense of despair that he talks about as driving him to do everything possible including crossing the line into EPO. He switches coaches, has incredible success, and then despairs over his results? It doesn't add up. It makes so much more sense to plateau just beneath your goals, feel like a failure, and then turn to EPO/doping to push you to your goals.

      @@tak-el-uc Your theory about athletes plateauing below their goals makes a bunch of sense if you remember his story from the Kona Vlogs last year on Lionel's chanel. Colin was basically pushed out of the ITU by [redacted] because he wasn't A. winning races and B. wasn't as young as the new talent constantly flowing into the sport. Dude said it himself, "I had to start making money in the sport because I had taken out a loan." In his eyes, it was either "Start doping and win some races and continue to be a professional triathlete" or "Get a different job, quit triathlon, and pay back that loan."

      No one is forcing them to be professional athlete. It’s a privilege, not a right.

    I like what you say about being empathetic to a person who is likely in a bad place mentally and emotionally when resorting to PEDs. That said, taking these drugs is clearly extremely selfish and lacking of empathy, and that such a behavior should deserve empathetic response is only half true. You should be strive to be empathetic, yes, but also be cautious. A person resorting to doping and only admitting to it after getting caught should reasonably be considered narcissistic, psychopathic or anti social to some degree and be met with caution as they may very well still try to manipulate the situation and those around them to their own benefit. Doping is not the ultimate crime here, but the betrayal of social trust, and that trust must be tat least temporarily withdrawn by society, just still in an empathetic way.

    This is not the first case of EPO in triathlon. There were more cases in history. Surprisingly, I do not hear about these cases during Colin Charier's case. See this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nina_Kraft, for example. ... And Ari, this is probably the closest opinion to mine on this case I've heard this week from all pros.

    This is a shame, but totally expected Triathlon won't be a bastion of pure sport , yes there will be people at the top who are totally clean but others who are full of juice , especially those that train on something and then come of 3 weeks before an event so u still get some benefit above their natural ability but test clean ( out of competition test are always stressful for athletes who are on something)

    Maybe I'm just a naïve fool who wants to keep on believing in my heroes past the point of logic, and I'm *sure* I have a very different perspective on the issue since I'm just an age-grouper, but even if we have confirmation of one person doping in triathlon, I'm not ready to start jumping to conclusions about other athletes doing the same, no matter how much success they may have had recently. That's a lot of weight and disdain to put on someone for something they may not have done, and I feel like it gives too much of an "out" to discount someone's legitimate accomplishments by saying "Oh, they must've been doping." Innocent until proven guilty, as far as I'm concerned. I just hope I don't end up eating my words on this one.

    Ultimately, does it matter? Even if everyone dope, does that mean you would dope?
    If your moral compass is if everyone does EPO, so will I, you’re really not much better than those people.
    The only reason not taking it is because you don’t want to get caught. Not because you think it’s wrong or bad for your health.
    To me, it’s kinda irrelevant.
    If you have no morals to begin with, it doesn’t matter, you’re gonna eventually dope because it’s a means to an end. You just want to win because it’s all you care about.

    Shenanigans to ‘only from November’ explanations. That has as much credibility as ‘tainted burritos’ type excuses. EPO is not a drug you just start taking at the beginning of the off season, just because you are injured and tired. Even if Colin wanted to end the season by ‘one last race’ in Indian Wells or Daytona. Blah Blah. EPO is a drug you take when you are ramping up the intensity or actually in a racing phase.
