Keith Sykes accidently called my house once, I thanked him for putting on the songwriter's night on Beale Street back in the late 90s before we said goodbye. That's the closest I ever got to meeting him.
Keith Sykes' performance of "My Only True Love" on the 1983 Austin City Limits Songwriter's Showcase is one of the best musical performances I've ever seen. He performed that show with Rodney Crowell, John Prine, Billy Joe Shaver, Guy Clark and Bill Caswell, and the whole show is amazing. I'd love to see a video asking him about that show. And I'd also love to know where to get a copy of that song!
Yes! It's the '83 Austin City Limits Songwriters showcase where I first heard Keith, amidst some absolute monster songwriters. I had an audio transfer from VHS on a cheap cassette, wore it out. Every single performance hit a deep nerve with me as New Wave was my thing, a genre I still love. This is where I first felt what authenticity was but hadn't heard the word, much less understood it at the age of 13. I'm 53 and Keith's performances still evoke much joy within. The vibe happening in that circle, Homegrown Tomatoes, Shame on the Moon, Coast of Marseilles, that guy named Prine doing 'Grandpa...' Really? This whole thing should be in the Smithsonian - an American Treasure. But like @ezracrowley5615, 'One True Love' hit me too.

I remember watching Keith at some of the early 80’s Memphis in May. I was in 3rd grade, Diver Down has just came out and I heard pretty woman and a thirst for live music. So so many great shows in Memphis from Keith to Shawn Lane in the Bombay Bicycle Bar in Overton square…

I was fortunate to do the monitor mix for Kris & Rita one night in the late 70's, their relationship was already on the rocks due to the scene with Sarah Miles in The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea. Kris wasn't very personable that night, but I fell in love with Rita.
That man right there is Memphis music, I've been under his spell since 1976 when I would visit a little place on Madison Ave, where Keith would do the first hour solo acoustic guitar than come back with his band and blow it out! Do yourself a favor and checkout "I'm not strange" by Mr. Keith Sykes
"Why Me" is a great song! Always moves me, I first heard it back in the 70s on AM radio, and I wondered who is that? Wow! Bobby McGee was great, Kris wrote it, Janis owned it! Awesome!
