I have a confession to make. Sometimes I watch your videos for the games I am not even planning to buy/play. Just cause it's such a pleasure: the quality and your positivity are amazing.
I'm amazed not more people have pointed out that this looks like what if the original Jurassic Park had been done during the height of the 80ies (because ~A-E-S-T-H-E-T-I-C-S~). I mean... Even the type font looks similar with the line in the middle of the numbers/letters. And there's gallimimus, velociraptos, etc. And the amber. Not to mention that the guy on the cover looks like John Hammond. Btw, no criticism intended - I love this. My heart crys out in joy.
The instruction manual for this game intimidated me significantly lol As soon as I saw you had made a video for it my first thought was: "**sigh of relief** Now I can play this game!" So thank you so much for making so many games accessible and easy to understand - especially for those of us who balk at instruction books longer than 3 pages :P

It just dawned on me that the dice are made of clear orange plastic to resemble the amber your scientists are collecting DNA samples from. That's pretty clever.
Watched this video when it was first released, even though I didn't have the game. Watched it again just now, because I'm teaching this game to my group tonight. Thanks Rodney! Deciding not to back Dino Island the first time was my biggest kickstarter regret. Very glad I got a chance to back it (and the expansion) the second time around.
Just bought this game today at a rummage sale. This video saved us great frustration in reading through the dense rule book; we were up and running while watching the video and managed to complete a short game afterwards with little to no questions about the rules. Great work, Rodney!
Finally played this game yesterday. Thanks to this video we were able to get going rather quickly since no one had read the rules Lol. Great game the only thing we ended up doing differently was the work phase which we did in turn order so we could supervise each other. Not because of cheating but just in case of mistakes since we were still learning
my 3yr old son is obsessed with Dinosaurs and I love playing games. I purchased this game recently for us; I play a solo game and he sits with me, loving the dinosaur theme. This video helped me greatly when playing my 1st few games and lessening his impatience, lol. Thank you, Rodney!! All your videos are fantastic!! (even if you do leave the solo variants for me to discover on my own 🤣)

This time since game night is today and I wasn't sure if I'm gonna get around to reading the whole manual so I watched the video first and it's great how much I already know how the game plays. I printed out some player references from BGG and it's on tonight! Actually now that I think about it I may have watched your video for first Martians before I got through the manual. That was a beast of a game to learn and your video greatly clarified so many things. That plus the almanac and player made revised rulebook finally got me going. I'll check out videos sometimes to get info on a game but this will be the first time I actually jump into a game without actually reading the whole manual!

Watch It Played thanks to your walk throughs, I’ve enjoyed many games and felt prepared to teach them. You are definitely a “go to” resource when I’m considering a game. Also picking up Bioshock the same weekend as Dinosaur Island and hoping my wife and I enjoy it as much as you and your son seemed to.
Not at all! Once you get over the initial rules dump, the phases all work really smoothly. I'd say you should have a pretty solid idea on what you need to do after one round.
Got the Xtreme Editions of this and the expansion for a really good price. My son and I are about to tear into it this afternoon. Can't wait, he's so stoked.

Thanks for the Video! We (4) played this game last night and now watching this video we got a few things wrong. Possibly explaining why all but 1 player was over 50 points lol
What would be a nice addition to this game is an enhanced mechanism for escaped dinosaurs to hunt visitors and give them a chance to survive.. like an inbuilt mini game where you determine the number of dinosaurs that escape and visitors move them to a separate hunt track.
Very cool. Seemed a little too complex for me.. but I think if I had a friend who really loved the game, I'd let them walk me through it and probably have fun.
Luke is pretty busy with school, so not on the channel as much :) As for which games we do play throughs of, I avoid pre-announcing, as my schedule can change and I don't like to disappoint. Our current play through is Fog of Love, we'll see what comes next.
Comment before watching: I hope this is not close enough to Jurassic Park to get sued, but close enough for Universal to buy it and paste the Jurassic Park branding and aesthetic on it. I would kill for an authentic Jurassic Park board game. Now, to watch. :)

I Googled it because I got nervous about having to eat my hat. Found an old Reddit AMA, and he said he lives in Canada. I knew it. You can't be that kind and warm and not be Canadian.
I do by best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but I avoid individual card/tile effects, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there - have fun playing!
21:50 You said that if you score it in the same phase more than one person can fulfill the same objective. But the rulebook says at the same time. If the objective is to have 3 Food Attractions and I buy my third one during my turn on phase two, and someone after me also fulfills that requirement the same phase those did not occur "at the same time." We've houseruled this so that any requirements fulfilled in the simultaneous phases (3 & 4, are considered at the same time) but would like a clarification.
Yeah, the rule book isn't quite accurate on that account. What we have here is verified by the publisher/designers. If you want, think of it this way - an objective is only cut off from the other players at the very end of the phase in which it was first claimed. "During" the phase, that the objective can still be claimed by others. The rule book doesn't clarify that, but you can be confident that this is correct.
This rule was changed by the design team after the rulebook was printed. The way it's explained in the rules was the ORIGINAL rule, but the new rule is as Rodney describes in his video.
Does anyone have any pointers on how to repack the game so it all fits back in the box? Apart from the fact that mine came with extra pieces, I don’t think I’ll ever get the box completely closed again. ☺️
I was having this trouble. I took out the insert because it seems generic and not very helpful for sorting things. I then put the pieces in lables zip lock bags and plastic containers. I was very confused about all the Kickstarter stuff (which I got too) and didn't realise it was just more premium versions of the standard tokens. Depending on how OCD you are about keeping bits, you can just completely remove the doubled up tokens and it saves you a lot of space.
Massage by Constance have you figured out a good way to get it all in the box!? We have the entire Kickstarter components and have everything just in a corner because we can’t get the box closed! Thanks!
Like with specialist cards and lab upgrade tiles, can you replace dinosaurs on your park board with a different dinosaur species? Also, not sure if this was stated or not, but can you build on the initial dinosaur and hat booth that are printed on the park board? Thanks for your help!
Thanks Rodney.... the rule book is not as user friendly/mess to read... wish game makers made more videos that read their instructions and illustration things in the game with play thrus(even a podcast which I need to check out more), with out people like you and Paul Grogan/Gameboy Geek/Gamenight etc and others regardless and more that you don't review games themselves. Looking at how big your Producer list is at the end is something I just noticed... wow!

How about the dot on the dinosaur exhibit? Is that the threat per dinosaur or just no matter how many dinosaur in that paddock just still the same for the threat level.
That's correct! But just to make sure the timing isn't mixed up, your threat level is raised each time you place a dinosaur into that paddock. So the first one placed will raise your threat level by one, the second dinosaur placed will increase it by another one, and so on.
19:46 Does a player lose one VP if a hooligan is eaten, or just for patrons? I assume they do, since you state you lose 1 VP for "each visitor" instead of "each patron". Also, I assume that hooligans in the park are eaten before any patrons outside the park, and that visitors outside the park that are eaten also lose 1 VP.... can you confirm?
Hey Alec, is there a particular part of the video you are referring to? Do you mean the "start player" rules? That's just a bit of silly fun they put in there - you can just pick the first player randomly.
Watch It Played, I am mainly curious as to the significance of the fossilized mosquito in the set. Is there a specific rule that revolves around it? Or is it there just to “look cool”

Does the groundskeeper shack allow you to upgrade the security once per turn for free or just when you purchase it? My copy is on it's way and I can't wait!
The tile Groundskeeper Shack has the green text "Increase your security level by 1 at no cost." - You do this once only, when you buy the tile. During the lab phase, you may activate its second ability "treat your security level as +1 for this round" by placing a worker on it. Why do some attractions have no visitor icons on them? I’ve tried researching it but no one explains why some have a certain amount of visitors that can visit an attraction and why a few have no visitor icons.
Some have no visitors on them, but you might still want to buy them, because they are worth a certain number of points at the end of the game (often more than attractions that can take visitors).
in the case of research dice that are two wild basic DNA, do you only get to choose on type of basic DNA and multiple there or can you do two DNA of one type and then anther two of another type?
@@WatchItPlayed Yesterday we played the game for the first time and one of our DNA dice had two "Basic multicolored icons" like the same icon shown on the market that you can buy any basic DNA of your choice. I probably shouldnt have used the word, "Wild". We were not sure how to interpret it so I asked the question and then during our game we decided that you could only pick one type of DNA until we could get an answer.
@@WatchItPlayed for example, I rolled and three basic wilds showed up on the face of a die. Do I have the choice of saying, I will choose one of each type of basic (or any variation of 2 of one and 1 of another), or do I have to get 3 of one type of DNA of my choice.
You can lose a few points from having your patrons eaten on any turn including the first. The 10 points makes it so you actually get penalized and lose something as opposed to nothing happening to you early on in the game.

Question that came up when I played last night: How do the merchandise location tiles work? THey usually don't have spaces for patrons.
I do by best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but I avoid individual card/tile effects, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there - have fun playing!

21:50 You said that if you score it in the same phase more than one person can fulfill the same objective. But the rulebook says at the same time. If the objective is to have 3 Food Attractions and I buy my third one during my turn on phase two, and someone after me also fulfills that requirement the same phase those did not occur "at the same time." We've houseruled this so that any requirements fulfilled in the simultaneous phases (3 & 4, are considered at the same time) but would like a clarification.
Yeah, the rule book isn't quite accurate on that account. What we have here is verified by the publisher/designers. If you want, think of it this way - an objective is only cut off from the other players at the very end of the phase in which it was first claimed. "During" the phase, that the objective can still be claimed by others. The rule book doesn't clarify that, but you can be confident that this is correct.
This rule was changed by the design team after the rulebook was printed. The way it's explained in the rules was the ORIGINAL rule, but the new rule is as Rodney describes in his video.

Does anyone have any pointers on how to repack the game so it all fits back in the box? Apart from the fact that mine came with extra pieces, I don’t think I’ll ever get the box completely closed again. ☺️
I was having this trouble. I took out the insert because it seems generic and not very helpful for sorting things. I then put the pieces in lables zip lock bags and plastic containers. I was very confused about all the Kickstarter stuff (which I got too) and didn't realise it was just more premium versions of the standard tokens. Depending on how OCD you are about keeping bits, you can just completely remove the doubled up tokens and it saves you a lot of space.
Massage by Constance have you figured out a good way to get it all in the box!? We have the entire Kickstarter components and have everything just in a corner because we can’t get the box closed! Thanks!

Not that I can think of. I state that you can do it in any order, because that's the rule.
Like with specialist cards and lab upgrade tiles, can you replace dinosaurs on your park board with a different dinosaur species? Also, not sure if this was stated or not, but can you build on the initial dinosaur and hat booth that are printed on the park board? Thanks for your help!

Thanks Rodney.... the rule book is not as user friendly/mess to read... wish game makers made more videos that read their instructions and illustration things in the game with play thrus(even a podcast which I need to check out more), with out people like you and Paul Grogan/Gameboy Geek/Gamenight etc and others regardless and more that you don't review games themselves. Looking at how big your Producer list is at the end is something I just noticed... wow!

How about the dot on the dinosaur exhibit? Is that the threat per dinosaur or just no matter how many dinosaur in that paddock just still the same for the threat level.
Each time you place a new dinosaur into that exhibit (including the first one), the dot shows how much threat you add in that moment.
Watch It Played it means that if I have 4 dinosaurs in a one dot exhibit so it equal to 4 dots ?
That's correct! But just to make sure the timing isn't mixed up, your threat level is raised each time you place a dinosaur into that paddock. So the first one placed will raise your threat level by one, the second dinosaur placed will increase it by another one, and so on.

Also, I assume that hooligans in the park are eaten before any patrons outside the park, and that visitors outside the park that are eaten also lose 1 VP.... can you confirm?
You've got it. Eaten hooligans cost a victory point too, and any hooligans in the park are eaten before visitors outside the park.
Is the threat level on the dinosaur paddocks per dinosaur eg. Everytime yiu make a new dinosaur you increase threat or is it just once?

Hey Alec, is there a particular part of the video you are referring to? Do you mean the "start player" rules? That's just a bit of silly fun they put in there - you can just pick the first player randomly.

Some do, some don't (it's all dependent on where we put our time). Sometimes we get the index out a bit later than the video.

I tend to avoid trying to evaluate that sort of thing. It's going to depend so much on the players.
Does the groundskeeper shack allow you to upgrade the security once per turn for free or just when you purchase it?

The tile Groundskeeper Shack has the green text "Increase your security level by 1 at no cost." - You do this once only, when you buy the tile. During the lab phase, you may activate its second ability "treat your security level as +1 for this round" by placing a worker on it.

Why do some attractions have no visitor icons on them? I’ve tried researching it but no one explains why some have a certain amount of visitors that can visit an attraction and why a few have no visitor icons.
Some have no visitors on them, but you might still want to buy them, because they are worth a certain number of points at the end of the game (often more than attractions that can take visitors).

in the case of research dice that are two wild basic DNA, do you only get to choose on type of basic DNA and multiple there or can you do two DNA of one type and then anther two of another type?
I'm not quite sure what you're asking, but basically, for each wild symbol, you can pick 1 DNA type.
@@WatchItPlayed Yesterday we played the game for the first time and one of our DNA dice had two "Basic multicolored icons" like the same icon shown on the market that you can buy any basic DNA of your choice. I probably shouldnt have used the word, "Wild".
We were not sure how to interpret it so I asked the question and then during our game we decided that you could only pick one type of DNA until we could get an answer.

I Have a question. Why do you put the score markers on the 10 spot? Does everyone start at 10 points?
Correct.
You can lose a few points from having your patrons eaten on any turn including the first. The 10 points makes it so you actually get penalized and lose something as opposed to nothing happening to you early on in the game.
Can you show me some board games without dices or cards?
