The best core exercises resist spine movement (like this, keeping upright) As opposed to things that rely on spine movement (like crunches). That lesson from a PT changed my life after I had a bad spine injury!

There are all sorts of muscles in the core that don’t primarily work of spinal flexion, however the six pack (recuts abdominals) most people view as your abs has the primary function of spinal flexion so for that muscle primarily a crunch or that movement is the best exercise for that muscle. Don’t just do one core exercise like you wouldn’t just do one exercise for any other part of the body.

    • @motionless_horizon

The best ab exercise for me is water crunches! You use two noodles, one behind you, under your arms, and the other under your knees like you’re sitting. You let the water hold you and use your core, not your hips, to pull your legs towards your chest. This has helped me so much because I have spinal instability so regular crunches can cause damage to my spine, but this way I don’t have to put pressure on my back!

Cuz when we r raising hands there's a little stretch along our body too+ the chest is lifting too . Also the legs r active too. Plus we have to balance using our core muscles. So we have to ENGAGE them too. Also when there's a lil stretch along our body our belly won't be pocking out that much. This is just my thoughts. I'm gonna try this one. Crunches are primarily working and isolating the rectus abdominis and the musculus pyramidalis. Supporting muscles working are groups of "side" ab muscles. They are mainly working the global (superficial) muscles. Meanwhile in this exercise you are not isolating your abs at all and not really bringing them into any form of contraction, the only function they fulfill here is to stabilise which brings only very little tension to the abs and is mainly working the local (deeper) muscles and make you get a better balance! This is also a good effect but not slightly comparable to crunches. The main muscles working here are many local muscles in the hull, in the hips, legs and feet. Also a few global muscles in the hips (e.g. musculus piriformis) for the Rotation and flexion of the leg in the hipjoint. This won't bring you abs... study your anatomy!
(Also when you do this 3×15 i dont think you will be able to feel an "ab burn" at all. I think if it even is hard it is hard keeping balance and body tension. And when you have maintained your balance you should just do crunches for your abs. Crunching is their strongest form of contraction = most effective.)

Everybody seems to want abs and better core strength, but crunches simply don’t do what people are wanting them to do. It’s time to stop wasting time on them. Here’s why, as well as some good core strengthening alternatives:
There is no such thing as localized fat burning, so doing core exercises will not burn fat on your stomach. “But if I have a more muscular core, won’t it look better anyway?” Yes, but:
There’s not enough resistance in a crunch to build any muscle. Anything you can do more than 20 or 30 reps of is going to build you little to no muscle. You’re just developing endurance in the currently existing muscle at that point. The point of added muscle is to give your skeleton greater structural integrity under load. If there’s no load, there’s no need for more muscle. “But if I do crunches I’ll burn calories, which will help me burn fat, right?” Yes, but
Crunches burn very few calories. Crunches have a short range of motion and recruit relatively little muscle tissue, meaning the calories you burn are going to be nominal. For the purpose of burning calories, you would be much better off doing squats, deadlifts, push ups, pull-ups, running… or pretty much anything else. “But I heard that core endurance is good for athletic performance?” Yes, but
You’re training your core wrong. Your core is primarily meant to stabilize your spine and provide a strong foundation from which the rest of your body can generate force. It is not supposed to generate much force itself. This is why the strongest lifts ever done and the greatest force production achieved by humans has been accomplished with the hips and with a stiff, stable core. For example, suppose you try to press a heavy weight overhead but your back buckles and and hyper-extends. You will not be able to press as much weight and will be at risk of injury. If a huge construction crane, capable of lifting thousands of pounds, is mounted on a giant pile of spaghetti, it’s not going to be able generate any force. It’s just going to fall over. Proximal stability enhances distal force.
So what should you do instead? Your core exercises should primarily consist of exercises like planks, side planks, properly executed anti-rotational exercises like the oblique twist, bird dogs or variations of these exercises. Exercises like pushups, single arm farmers carries and dumbbell rows (stiff torso) also require a fair amount of core stabilization. Core exercises should be set up to resist force, not create it.
      Now go forth and plank.
Bonus note: Priming your core with exercises like the plank has been shown to increase core stability immediately for up to two hours after doing them. Sprinters who primed their core prior to sprinting were able to sprint faster than they could without core priming. Add sub-maximal core activation into your warm-up prior to compound movements and see if you feel a

This will not work the same muscles as crunches lmao… this will slightly work your obliques. The most effective way to get abs is to weight train them, and lower your body fat percentage. This doesn’t count as weight training because the weight is doing nothing for this work out. This is so stupid. Crunches and that work completely different muscles. The function of the rectus abdominis (6 pack muscles which crunches target) is to flex the trunk and bend the body in half. The excersize shown in the video do not flex the trunk, hence not working the 6 pack muscles at all, so you cannot compare both those excersizes. It's like comparing pushups to bicep curls.
